southern california are battling a fast moving wildfire that forced up to 6,000 memorial day campers to evacuate. the fire broke out yesterday afternoon in the los padres national forest. about 50 homes are threatened, many of them vacation rentals. so far just one building has actually been damaged. >> it was a u.s. forest service building. the fire was put out so only a certain portion of the building was destroyed. we had two vehicles that were burned. one was a u.s. forest service whiteface mountain.

the weather was so bad that part of the highway had to be closed. and president obama takes a post-memorial day tour of the jersey shore today. he'll get a firsthand look at recovery efforts from superstorm sandy. new jersey suffered an estimated $38 billion in storm damage. sandy hit seven months ago and

the road back has not been easy. erica ferrara look at one hard hit community off long island's south shore. >> reporter: the crowds at this year's memorial day parade weren't as big as usual. >> we all feel it losing neighbors and friends. those that are here are fighting. >> reporter: this community is still rebuilding after superstorm sandy flooded neighborhoods and ripped apart its boardwalk seven months ago. mary ann maloney has lived here more than 40 years. >> they'll be back. they promise. >> reporter: sandy caused about $100,000 worth of damage at this deli. it's been a slow winter but customers are returning as the summer season begins. >> we're hoping for a good summer. i'm thinking that we'll have one. a lot of people will come here because of the fact of sandy. this way they can do business for us. >> reporter: crews worked to get

the beach ready for sunbathers and despite a chilly weekend, people showed up. >> long beach is great all year long but it comes alive in the summer. >> reporter: there's still a lot of work ahead. a $44 million project is under way to rebuild the boardwalk. part of the iconic two-mile long walkway will open later this morning. >> the boardwalk is a huge attraction. people just come here to walk on the boardwalk, ride their bikes. >> reporter: people are celebrating the return of summer and their little paradise is slowly getting back to normal. overseas, the european union lifted the arms embargo on syrian rebels fighting the assad regime. meanwhile, senator john mccain decided to conduct some personal foreign policy. mccain slipped across the syrian border yesterday to meet with rebel leaders. tara mergener is in washington

with details. >> reporter: mccain has been a strong advocate for u.s. action in syria. in contrast to the obama administration's more restrained approach, his visit could put pressure now on washington to intervene. senator john mccain crossed the border from turkey into syria to meet with military commanders waging war against the bashar al assad regime. the woman who helped set up the visit said mccain made the trip because he believes the u.s. has abandoned the rebel fighters. she says they wanted to show them the american people support their war. it's a sentiment mccain himself hinted at this weekend. >> right now bashar al assad is winning. that's because the united states is not leading or assisting. >> reporter: but the obama administration is looking for a diplomatic end to the war. secretary of state john kerry met with his russian counterpart in paris to discuss next month's syrian peace conference in geneva. >> we are committed to this. we both want to make this conference happen if possible

together with many other countries that have joined up. >> reporter: the americans are attempting to bring the factured opposition groups to the table while the russias attempt to persuade the syrian government to negotiate. >> it's not an easy task. it's a very tall order. but i hope that when they take this kind of initiative, the chances of success are there. >> reporter: mccain wants the u.s. to implement a no-fly zone over syria to change the situation on the ground. >> unless bashar al assad is convinced that the battlefield situation will not be in his favor -- in other words, if he believes he can survive, i do not believe that he will seriously negotiate. >> reporter: the opposition fighters could soon have more support. late last night the european union voted to allow member nations to ship weapons to syria's outgunned rebels.

a man tried to open the emergency exit as the plane back descent into portland, oregon. >> 23-year-old alexander michael herrera of arizona is under arrest by the fbi accused of trying to open an emergency exit door on alaska flight 132 while the plane was in the sky near portland. >> there was a loud hissing noise and then lots of people screaming. >> reporter: a passenger had been sleeping like many onboard the overnight flight from anchorage to portland. >> someone was yelling top him! stop him! i turned around and saw a large man trying to open the emergency exit and was just yanking on it. a loud hissing noise and god bless the passengers around him both men and women that just tackled him and pulled him off and held him down.

>> reporter: the flight crew used zip ties and seat belt extenders to secure herrera in a seat until the plane landed 15 minutes later. police came onboard and handed him over to the fbi. herrera is facing federal charges of interfering with a flight crew. airline passengers we talked to say it doesn't surprise them. >> there's a lot of people that are trying that kind of stuff anymore. >> the suspect is expected to make his first court appearance later today. crews in washington state are now cleaning up after a major bridge collapsed into a river there. workers attached chains to the two vehicles that fell into the water and used a crane and other heavy machinery to lift them out. a truck struck the bridge on thursday causing it to collapse into the river. no one was injured. and search teams rescued the pilot of an f-15 that crashed this morning in the pacific after taking off from japan. the fighter jet went down 70 miles east of okinawa.

forecast in some cities around the country. new york, afternoon rain. miami, thunderstorms. chicago, thunderstorms as well but partly sunny in dallas. los angeles, morning clouds. and time now for a check of the national forecast. more severe weather is expected today from nebraska to the ohio valley with damaging wind, large hail and possibly tornadoes. strong thunderstorms are also predicted in the mid-atlantic states. the northwest sees scattered showers and potentially strong thunderstorms in wyoming and colorado. most of the south and southwest stays dry. firefighters in china rescued a newborn from a sewage pipe after people heard crying coming from a toilet. they cut the pipe inside the residential building over the weekend. they rushed the infant still inside the pipe to a nearby hospital. doctors carefully cut the rest away to free the baby. the infant is said to be in stable condition and police are searching for his parents.

on the "cbs moneywatch," ge gets into the fracking business and new yorkers get a new form of transportation. ashley morrison is here in new york with that and more. good morning, ashley. >> reporter: good morning. asia markets saw bargain hunting overnight. tokyo's nikkei gained more than 1% while hong kong hang seng's also added 1%. traders get back to work on wall street today after the markets were closed for memorial day it comes after the market's first losing week in more than a month. the dow shed 51 points last week while the nasdaq lost more than 40 points. general electric is betting billions on the fracking boom. fracking uses a pressurized liquid to break through rock layers to force out oil and gas. ge hopes its investment in research will lead to reduced environmental and health impact and make the process more profitable for energy companies. a canadian drug company plans to spend billions to buy one of the world's leading contact lens manufacturers.

valeant pharmaceuticals is spending 8.7 billion to purchase bausch & lomb. "fast and furious 6" ran laps around the competition over the long holiday weekend. the sixth film of the franchise opened at the top of the leaderboard with $120 million making it the biggest opening ever for universal pictures. american troops deployed overseas often miss the comforts of home. one group has made it its mission to provide them with a wish list of items. michelle miller reports. >> reporter: 38-year-old kristen holloway has boxes full of letters, cards and e-mails. >> that's my favorite kind of e-mail to get. someone saying thank you. >> reporter: the thank yous are from thousands of service members in iraq and afghanistan. >> my best friend in the world sergeant ryan montgomery campbell was killed over here. >> reporter: she's read this one from staff sergeant brendon mcavoy so many times she has it memorized. >> when i go to national arlington cemetery to give him one last salute, i will be able to remember why he's here. the people like you are the

reason why we do what we do. >> reporter: it all began in 2004 when holloway wanted to help a few pennsylvania guardsmen. the guardsmen wanted t-shirts so she asked friends and neighbors for small donations. >> the thing i didn't expect is money would come in so quickly and so generously that i was able to provide for all 117 men in that company. >> reporter: a few months later, holloway created operation troop appreciation. >> are these all going to them? >> reporter: the organization is unique because these care packages are made to order. troops request what they want and the volunteers send it to them. >> you can't get doritos in afghanistan. >> reporter: dozens of volunteers box care packages that reach 1,200 troops a month. so far they granted 120,000 wishes. >> i think the biggest thing i've gotten is the satisfaction of reaching out and helping people. >> reporter: and you have a husband out of the deal. >> i got a husband.
