5:00 am
good morning. welcome to mosaic. i'm vicky evans your host today. i am the respect life coordinator of the archdiocese of office public policy and social concerns. and our guest today is one of my coworkers in the vineyard who is the archdiocese interim director in the office of worship. laura and i have worked together on many projects and it's a great pleasure to have you here today. >> it's nice to be here. thank you, vicky. >> also, you have some duties at the cathedral, right? >> yes, i've been on the board of regions and do i a great
5:01 am
activities there. that is my home. >> so working at the archdiocese had this the san francisco and the office of worship and the cathedral, you have a unique perspective of what goes on, particularly during this year of page that is our topic for today. so the year of faith started last october 11th. it will continue till november 24th. so tell us, what exactly is the year of faith and why are we having one? >> year of faith was created by pope benedict xvi. and it was to declare a sense of return to christ. and he wanted to declare a year in which people would dedicate themselves, catholics particularly and christians would dedicate themselves to looking at their baptism and seeing what it meant to them and renewing their relationship with crime. there's a sense that we try to talk to others that are not
5:02 am
christians but we don't do to ourselves. this is the 50th anniversary of the begin of vatican 2. this is the 20th anniversary of the -- and so a perfect time to say we have 50 years since trait can 2 and 20 years since the cattism. let's get that off the shelf and read to each other and remember why we're catholic and do some studying and scripture. it's a great time to put aside and say we're going to focus on this it's not the first time that we had a year of faith.
5:03 am
there was one in 1967. it's not a bad time to think about our year of faith. we had the year of paul and jube leer year. this can be done in the home, the parish and the worldwide church. >> and this is a worldwide celebration, right? >> absolutely. it's meant to be celebrated everywhere in different levels. worldwide, there have been lots of discussions and speeches, both pope benedict and now pope francis have discuss it had. discussed it. and there have been special prayer group and we encourage in the home. >> it sounds like it will be a good year and it sounds like a lot of hoot for the church.
5:04 am
i think when we get back from our first break, we'll look into more about what is going on at the archdiocese, like what is happening there in the archdiocese in san francisco where the different parishes and the missions are going to celebrate the year of faith. stay tuned. ,,
5:05 am
5:06 am
welcome back to mosaic. our guest this morning is laura bettertony who is a fellow worker at the archdiocese and the interim director in the office of worship. so we spent the first segment talking about the year of faith and what it is and why we're having it and now we'll talk a little about what is going on
5:07 am
in our own archdiocese to celebrate the year of faith. so what are the parishes and schools doing? >> the parishes have taken the year of faith and running with it. they're doing special series and prayer groups and making sure to include the year of faith in the weekly masses and the schools are focused on the education and putting extra emphasis into it like the pope has called for. and october 4th, just the week before we installed archbishop -- we were exhausted and not ready to launch into a new project. so the parishes and the schools ran with it and that was
5:08 am
fantastic. and they renew the relationship with christ and renewing your call that baptism for all of us. it's amazing how many catholics are ignorant about learning their own father. on we're now recovered and we're ready to start launching again so there are a lot of things that the year of faith calls for the beneficiaries so much a place can elect for his area. so one of those are pill brim imagine sites. so they have determined there will be four pilgrimage sites in the diocese. people can go and there will be special prayers there are for the year of faith. and there will be little areas for them to read about the year of faith. it's not a big deal. they can make a special trip of it. let's go as a family or maybe i'm here and i think i'll go to saint matthew's and stop and take a prayer. simple. >> with a are the locations?
5:09 am
>> saint matthew's, saint ray fields and then the cathedral in san francisco and so it's a place for people to pray. it's not a big deal. you can go and spend all day. these are gorgeous churches of our archdiocese. if you wanted to go to all four, i think that would be -- in one day could you do it or do it over a series of weeks. it will be a good goal to have and a chance for prayer and a chance to say what is unique about this parish and my faith. and the other thing that they have done is they have -- we have determined a date, one day a month in which people can go and say a special mass for the year of faith. and that means from they go to mass on that day in their parish church, they can gain and indulgence.
5:10 am
and we're just trying to do some encouragement. we have a website up. and we're trying to get people to studying the cattism. make a focus to us and saying what am i going to do special today thorough week? i think i'll give it a try. we don't want to make it burdensome. >> you mentioned our website. the website has a wealth of material on it besides just the year of faith. and you see it on the screen now. it is sfarchdiocese.org. and i think this is a world way year of faith?
5:11 am
>> it's the the worldwide and the year of faith proclaimed by the pope. it has prayers. whatever you want. you're probably going to find it there. >> and the pictures are really too. when we come back, i want to go back to what you said about indulgences because i think there are some indulgences to be gained during this year of faith and maybe you can tell us a little more about indulgences. i think that is something that we never get tired of hearing about because it gets to us heaven. so we'll talk about that when we come back.
5:12 am
5:13 am
5:14 am
welcome back to mosaic. we are talking about the year of faith today. so laura has walked us through what it is, what the reasons for it are and the fact that there are some indulgences attach to the year of faith. and you're going to tell us about that now because indulgences are, i think and important and misunderstood topic. >> absolutely. i think in many ways, people hear indulgences and they thinks it a four letter word and do we still do that? one of his top complaints what we refer to the selling of
5:15 am
indulgences. it technically was not the selling. but people could donate money to get an indulgence. it gives you the ability to -- it's the ability to wipe away the punishment of sin. we talk about is when we have sin, we both have the guilt, that is the breaking of the relationship between our relationship and our god and the punishment that is a result of that sin. and we can go to confession at any time when we are properly disposed. but we cannot remove the punishment unless we do extra activity. and the church come up with is indulgences and they've been around for hundreds and hundreds of years as a way for we'll to make way. you can give your credit to
5:16 am
someone in precatory -- and we ask people to do a special act. you can get indulgences by many different actions like praying the rosery and praying. the pope gives permission for certain special plenty try indulgences. all sin is wiped away from that point forward. but no insurance. but you can wipe out everything so a plenty try indulgence versus part indulgence. you can go to three lectures on vatican 2 or missions or visit one of the pilgrim churches, to go to mass on the special days
5:17 am
designated by the archbishop. and the other is visit your baptismal place. they can go back to the church where they were baptized. >> so i have to go back to cleveland? >> yes. while you're there, you also need to pray for the intentions of the pope. you need to go to holy communion within a reasonable amount of time like between three days and go to the confession to get rid of the guilt side of the sin. and it's a way to think about why do i sin and what does it mean to be seperated from the church. and the most important part of an indulgence is that you are properly disposed, that you honestly realed that you've caused some sort of problem and that you want to be good in the future and not do it again. so it's not the tick the box. and thing that is the problem
5:18 am
in the past and the scandals, i'll make a big donation and the church will get me out. people were making big donations and have no intention of changes or going to mass. it's not a free card. it's a way to think about sin and what does it mean in the church. and the popes have discuss it had quite a bit that we're in a sinful world. it's the creation of god and it's a good place and that we're attached to material things and that we are like any relationship where we may fight like a sister, brother or husband, i have issues and i hurt my relationship with god. and i need to reconcile that relationship so the church gives you the method to put that. >> thing that puts in perspective of what an adult indulgence is. if you would like to buy one,
5:19 am
feel free to send me a check. >> no, no, no, no. if they would like to know more about them, that website that talks about the year of faith, there are wonderful discussions of the what they are. they're out there. and there is a wonderful description of the indulge indulgences are there. and why we have them and it talks of the importance of pentanes. >> and these things are part of our year of faith as you said. prayer pentanes. >> yes and learning vatican ii. it's a renewal of faith. baptism opens the door to faith. and we just cannot walk in and peek our head in and say, okay,
5:20 am
i'm a catholic and christian. we need to step into the room and em grace and study it. and you were confirmed and then you never probably took another religious class in your life. it's a great tonight to do so. >> so good. as we said before all of this information is available on our website at sfarchdiocese.org. thank you for coming in and giving us the information about the year of faith and our stage in general. i hope this is a point where everybody will want to take advantage of our last few months. >> absolutely.
5:21 am
5:22 am
5:23 am
welcome back. our guest today is the interim direct in the office of worship. and i'm vicky evans. so we've been talking about the year of faith. but there's another subject that i wanted to touch on our new archbishop. he will be elevated from bishop to archbishop june 29th in rome on the feast of st. peter and paul. >> he was made and archbishop last july. but it is true that every
5:24 am
archbishop that is declared in a year from july to the following july needs to make their own little pilgrimage and they go to rome. and june 29th, it's all on june 29th, on the feast of saint peter and paul. they get a you this one if they're made a new archbishop of a new place and it's a white cloth that goes around their neck. and there are little jewels that go on it it's the sign of being an archbishop. his is a little fancier than the others. it's a special ceremony. it's a special wool that is used for this purpose. it's like a home week. everyone comes to rome from all over the world. they all come to rome with pilgrims and we have a hundred from the archdiocese going.
5:25 am
and he gets to wear it wherever he's in san francisco saying mass. and it's a special honor and special day. this is special because he's called a metropolitan. it's a great time of feasting and joy. and it is saying that we believe that the bishops are successors of peter and. and all of our other bishops, they have symbolism and they have funny hats and people think -- it's one more symbolism. >> it's tradition. >> absolutely. >> it reminds thought catholic faith has been around for 2,000 year. and a program that he strongly sports around now is the call to prayer? >> absolutely. the call to prayer is uniquely for the united states. this is not a worldwide thing like the year of prayer. it falls in there as a wall of
5:26 am
prayer among the united states and the people and the focus is on family, marriage, and youth. and the idea is that we need to focus on those things in the united states. we have particular challenges in the u.s. on those things. and so we need to pray and that is all it is. they're in the title, call to prayer. so the idea is that people will pray more. so we ask that people use special petitions in their services and we ask that they educate themselves. we have a holy hour. most parishes and certainly at the cathedral we have a monthly holy hour where the people can come and pray and it's all with the intention for this call to prayer and a call for us to pray and act. that ties in and is working the fort night for freedom and that starts in late june.
5:27 am
it will be focusing on what does it mean to be damage flick a democratic sew -- catholic in a democratic society? it's that focus of remember you're catholic. it's not say about saying this is what the catholic church believes and teach. and educate yourself. don't just -- why do we believe that and why is it scripturally believe answered. >> and will encompass life, prayer and religious freedom. >> and the things that challenge us in the united states for good. west freedom of religion in the united states and we need to celebrate that and honor t but also it has influences in other ways too. >> okay so that wraps up what
