the irs braces for more damaging allegations today after the head of the agency tells congress americans no longer trust the tax service. >> we failed in that most basic core principle here. tragedy in oklahoma. one family affected by friday's tornadoes waits for word on the fate of three missing children. >> if i say they're dead, that means i'm giving up. i will never give up on my kids coming home. drug warning. a new study finds a link between prescription medication used in adults and accidental drug poisoning in children. the miami heat feeling final fever but the nba can't seem to top the pacers in a tense game seven for a chance to defend their title. this is the "cbs morning news"

for tuesday, june 4th, 2013. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the investigation into the irs. three separate congressional committees and the justice department are looking into whether the agency illegally targeted conservative groups. today members of those groups testify on capitol hill and an inspector general's report will be released outlining spending controversies. all that after the acting director of the irs told lawmakers on monday that americans have lost trust in the agency. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. today a house committee will hear from small government groups who claim the irs put them under extra scrutiny but now the agency is under some scrutiny in another scandal. allegations of excessive spending by the irs on itself. videos like this one produced for the irs were shown at agency

conferences from 2010 to 2012 with taxpayers picking up the tab. an inspector general's report out today will show that's just part of some 50 million taxpayer dollars the irs spent to most more than 200 employee conferences. at one $4 million event in anaheim, california, some irs managers stayed in rooms at high end hotels like this hilton presidential suite listed at $1,500 a night. yesterday the new head of the irs, danny werfel, came to capitol hill to explain what he plans to do to fix a number of problems facing the agency. >> it has to start with a recognition that the trust has been violated and it has to trust with a recognition that we have to get all of the facts out. >> reporter: the irs is also under fire for targeting conservative groups. members of some of those groups will testify before a congressional panel later today. >> targeting groups based on their names and political

beliefs is both chilling and outrageous. >> reporter: werfel promises transparency in the future. >> these failures have undermine the public's trust in the irs' ability to administer the tax laws in a fair and impartial manner. >> reporter: werfel named top assistants to help him fix the agency. a whistle-blower inside the irs alerted the agency on the excessive spending. there is another hearing on that coming up on thursday. all this happens as the irs is now asking for a $1 billion budget increase. >> pretty bad timing. susan mcginnis in washington. thank you. oklahoma officials now say at least 18 people were killed in last week's tornadoes and flooding. seven of the victims have not been identified. when the severe weather hit, one family sought shelter in a storm drain and this morning they are desperately searching for loved ones. our oklahoma city station kwtv has their story. >> it's hard.

>> reporter: lost her son. he was swept away by floodwaters but he wasn't alone. >> they are all still missing. >> reporter: here's a look at who the family is still looking for. alexis, 6-month-old. destiny, a 4 year old. cara rachel who is now 3 along with her 21-year-old son. they were part of a group of 11 who came here to seek shelter from the tornado. when the group got to this storm drain under southwest 15th, the water level was about what it is now. just a few puddles in here. it quickly got higher. when it got to two feet or here, the water was rushing with so much power the group could not physically walk out of here and all of them, including many children were swept away. >> the current underneath there was so fast and hard, there's no way to get back out. >> reporter: the 8 year old was

found by the dam in the river friday night. >> i held her shirt trying to get out and i accidentally let go and i then i went under the water whenever i let go by accident and didn't make it out. >> reporter: the family says they'll search the river all night until everyone is accounted for. >> please keep your eyes open. >> until they can prove to me and show me a body, the babies are coming home. that's the only way i can look at it. if i say they're dead, that means i'm giving up and i'll never give up on my kids coming home. >> the national weather service says five tornadoes touched down in oklahoma last friday. the trouble this morning in the nation's heartland is flooding. iowa, illinois and missouri are especially hard hit as the mississippi and missouri rivers spillover their banks after heavy rain. residents of west alton,

missouri, north of st. louis, were told to evacuate last night. volunteers were stacking sandbags. levees in the area have already been breached and roads are already flooded. the mississippi is expected to crest there sometime today. just north of los angeles, thousands of residents forced by a raging wildfire to flee their homes have been allowed to return. the powerhouse fire is now 60% contained thanks to diminished winds and some cool, moist air. but the fire destroyed at least six homes and still threatens some 250 others. edward lawrence reports. >> reporter: tom has lived in lake hughes, california, for 20 years. since saturday he's been living in his rv in this parking lot. >> i saw the flames coming over the hill. >> reporter: he says the fires that forced him here are the worst he's seen. you're living out of that? >> three of us living in there and four dogs and a bird. >> reporter: he could soon be going home.

favorable weather conditions have helped firefighters gain ground on the flames. fire crews are also looking for favorable conditions in colorado where a smoky fire threatened homes and sent residents and animals scrambling for safer ground. other big fires are burning in nevada and new mexico. here in california, fire season is normally at its worst in the fall but warm, dry, windy conditions have firefighters saying they're experiencing those fall conditions now in june. julie says the flames got as close as the tree in her front yard. >> we both were going at it with the hose and were able to get it out or else our house would have been on fire. >> reporter: her home was saved. a close call, she says, but a price she's willing to pay to live here. edward lawrence for cbs news, lake hughes, california. funeral services will be held tomorrow for new jersey's long-term senator frank lautenberg. lautenberg died yesterday from

kingdom in florida, prices are up $6 for an adult ticket now reaching $95 for guests 10 and older. on the "cbs moneywatch," car sales pick up speed and the next big breakfast craze. ashley morrison is here in new york with that and more. >> most asian markets rebounded despite a report showing u.s. manufacturing fell to its lowest level in four years. tokyo's nikkei added 2%. its biggest one-day rise in three weeks. hong kong hang seng's was unchanged. after finishing in the red last week, wall street rallied on monday. the dow surged in the final hour of trading gaining 138 points. the nasdaq ended up nine points higher. full sized pickups are fueling auto sales as growing confidence in the economy is leading small businesses to replace their ageing fleets. low interest rates and memorial day sales drew in crowds who drove off in cars. in may, dealers sold 1.4 million vehicles. that's up 8% from last may. demand for air travel is

and warehouse clubs. here's a look at today's forecast at some cities around the country. new york mostly sunny and a high of 75. thunderstorms in miami. partly sunny in chicago and dallas. morning clouds in los angeles. 74 degrees the high there. time now for a check of the national forecast. another chance this afternoon for severe weather and possible tornadoes in the plains and into the lower missouri valley. look for heavy rain and some flooding in south florida with scattered thunderstorms likely across the panhandle through georgia to south carolina. the northeast and much of the west stays dry. a judge in south africa this morning postponed the murder trial of oscar pistorius to august to give the defense more time to prepare. the double amputee olympic track star arrived for his first formal appearance since he was released on bail in february. he's accused of killing his

girlfriend on valentine's day. pistorius admitted shooting her through a locked door but thought she was an intruder. thousands of protesters back on the streets of turkey this morning. they are demanding the prime minister resign gathering outside of his office at dawn. u.s. secretary of state john kerry calls for an investigation. >> we urge all people involved, those demonstrating and expressing their freedom of eggs pregnan expression expression of freedom, to avoid any provocations of violence. >> the violence began friday when police raided a protest in which demonstrators were trying to save a park. to a warning about prescription medication. adults are taking them more than ever. there's a link to an increase in kids being accidentally poisoned by the drugs. >> reporter: susan keeps her painkillers out of the reach of

her 10 and 11-year-old daughters. >> it's always scary to have painkillers in the house. >> reporter: susan is a breast cancer survivor who was prescribed painkillers after a double mastectomy and hysterectomy and tells her daughters that these drugs are dangerous. >> you should never touch this. >> this is prescription percocet. >> reporter: there's a link between a surge in adults taking prescription drugs and an increase in children getting drug poisoning. children under 6 face the greatest risk followed by teenagers. despite safeguards like packaging, more than 7 million children are evaluated in the hospital for accidental drug poisoning. poisonings from cholesterol medications and high blood pressure drugs led to the most e.r. visits. poisoning from prescription painkillers and diabetes medications caused the most serious injuries and hospitalizations.

in baseball now, philadelphia outfielder dominick brown continues his streak at the plate. he connects on his 17th homer of the year leading the national lead and also his 8th home run in the last eight games. phillies top miami 7-2. the boston bruins grab a big lead over pittsburgh in the nhl eastern conference finals. a goal 28 seconds into the game. the bruins win 6-1 and head back to boston with a 2-0 series lead. and deacon jones, one of the most formidable players in nfl history has passed away. throughout the 1960s, jones led the los angeles rams defensive line known as the fearsome foursome and excelled at chasing down opposing quarterbacks but the league didn't keep track of sacks until after his playing days were over. jones was inducted into the hall of fame in 1980.

three people were killed and 264 others were injured in the boston marathon bombings. nearly two months after the attack, the last of the injured, erika brannock, was released from the hospital yesterday. lee woodruff spoke with brannock and her sister who was also injured in the bombing. >> reporter: this photo of nicole gross, taken just moments after the first bomb went off has become an iconic image of the attack. she and erika had come to the marathon to cheer on their 57-year-old mother, carol downing. >> i remember being flown back and there was instant silence and then i was scared for dear life that another bomb was going to go off and that that's how i

was going to die. >> i just looked straight up and had a conversation with god and i said i'm not going, i'm not done yet. >> nicole, a runner herself, trained her mother for the race. >> i was almost at the finish line. then we heard that there was a bombing and i tried to text my kids and i didn't get an answer. it was sheer panic for me then. >> reporter: with the help of strangers, downing located nicole at brigham and women's hospital. she had broken both legs and sustained hearing loss. it wasn't until 9:00 p.m. that she found her younger daughter, erika, at beth israel hospital. her left leg had been partially amputated. >> i went into the room and i just didn't even recognize her. >> erika faces months of rehabilitation back home in towson, maryland, before she'll be able to walk with the aid of

a prosthetic leg. after weeks of rehab, nicole is back home in charlotte and walking again. do any of you feel anger at all? >> i think one of the hardest things for me was when they actually brought the second bomber into the hospital that i had been at. i thought he was going to blow the hospital up. i remember being angry that somebody could do this and make such a happy occasion so horrific. >> reporter: how has the bombing affected your sister relationship? >> we were right on top of each other when it happened when the bomb went off and we'll be side by side no matter where we are forever. >> reporter: proving there are some things even a bomb can't destroy. lee woodruff, cbs news, boston. coming up after your local news on "cbs this morning," president obama announces his pick for the federal appeals court in washington. this morning we'll have a preview from the white house.
