tropical storm andrea comes to shore in florida and threatens to move up the atlantic coast, promising a rain-soaked weekend for millions. i'm a verizon customer. it doesn't bother me one bit for the national security administration to have my phone number. >> as details of the government's snooping widens, president obama defending two secretive programs aim at collecting phone and internet records. >> days before his 92nd birthday, prince philip is hospitalized. queen elizabeth said to be in good spirits as he begins to undergo exploratory surgery. and the game between miami and the san antonio spurs goes down to the wire.

captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, june 7th, 2013. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, this morning tropical storm andrea is losing steam as it heads up the atlantic coast. andrea is moving over southwest georgia packing sustained winds of 45 miles per hour, and, of course, heavy rain. the storm triggered eight tornados as it moved across florida. cbs weather consultant david bernard says it continues to move north and as it does, it looks like wet weather. it's all going to be about the rain fall. look at this potential rainfall map. this will take us into saturday afternoon. we're talking a wide swath of at much as 2 to 5 inches of rain

all the way to new england. some areas could see higher amounts. because of that, we have a number of flood watches currently in effect, specifically across the i-95 corridor. these will be in effect all day and through the nighttime hours 678 that's where we're expecting the heaviest rain. looking at the national forecast, spotty showers throughout the day, heaviest in south florida. the worst will be what's left of andrea. heavy rain at times across all of the i-95 corridor, d.c., philadelph philadelphia, and boston is going to be fairly heavy rain. and, again, there could be some of localized flooding. i'm david bernard, cbs news, miami. folks hit hard by superstorm sandy are keeping an eye on andrea. susan mcginnis is on the island of long beach just near south shore. susan, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. now we know that this tropical storm will start to weaken as it

moves up the i-95 corridor, and that is good news for folks in areas like this one, still recovering from sandy. the cleanup has already begun in florida after tropical storm andrea came ashore thursday. the storm spawned several tornadoes. the gonzalez family was holed up in their palm beach county home as a twister moved through their yard. >> you could hear stuff hitting the house. >> reporter: the sunshine state has damage stretching from the gulf coast to the atlantic. and now as andrea moves up into georgia, the carolinas, and virginia, the real threat is flooding. flood watches are are in effect from central virginia up the i-95 corridor into connecticut. andrea is still a day away from impacting long island, but this is the first big storm to hit the area since superstorm andy, and many residents are taking precautions. >> i'm going to batten down the hatches, get stuff off the floor in the basement just in case. >> reporter: evonne lives on arizona street here in new york.

here construction is an every day reminder of the storm that took so much last year. evonne says hearing about more bad weather. her neighbor lisa augustine laughs off the threat of andrea. >> rain. it's just rain, no storm. >> reporter: augustine moved into her home about a week ago and she wouldn't have live anywhere else. the new york area has actually implemented a flash flood plan and a hazardous travel advisory. >> i see the rain coming down. susan mcginnis in long beach. thank you, susan. this morning we're learning more about the federal government's secret surveillance records. it's not only involving phone records but internet records to respond

to the many threats facing the nation. major garrett has more. >> reporter: the national security agency operating under secret court aorders to thwart terror calls was authorized to track calls of millions of americans, even those not tied to investigation and track the duration of the calls but the obama administration insists id did not listen to the conversations or record the

names of the callers. >> they look at the terrorists' phone numbers overseas and they run those against this big data and what they learn is how many numbers in the united states are talking to terrorists over seas. counterterrorism experts told us this surveillance is ongoing and involves most major telephone companies, not just verizon. some law firms such as wisconsin lawmaker james senn senn brener who wrote many of the moves criticizes it. >> it's an abuse overreach. >> reporter: but a majority of the republicans and democrats did not object. right now, harry reid. >> right now everyone should calm down and understand this isn't something brand nuchlt it's been going on for some seven years.

>> reporter: attorney general eric holder won praise from lindsey graham. >> i'm a verizon customer. it doesn't bother me one bit for the national security administration to have my phone number because what they're trying to do is find out what terrorist groups we know about and individuals and who the hell they're calling. >> reporter: california democrat dianne feinstein head of the intelligence committee says this data collection has stopped several terrorist attacks hire in the united states. feinstein did not elaborate but her comments echoed those of house committee chairman republican mike rogers of michigan. major garrett, cbs news, the white house. internet espionage is likely to be one of the key topics when president obama meets with the chinese president today. the two leaders are holding a two-day summit at an estate outside palm citi, california.

and on "cbs moneywatch," all eyes on this morning's jobs report and general motors makes an enticing offer. >> good morning to you, anne-marie. commits expect to hear more of the same when the department releases the may report. the job gains will be roughly the same as april. about 165,000, though some fear it could fall short of those expectations. the uncertainty led to uneasiness on wall street but the dow ended on gains. the down ended up 80 points while the nasdaq grew by 20 points. asian market finished ahead of the job market. president obama wants to bring high-speed internet to 99% of the nation's students within five years. the president ordered the s.e.c. to expand the existing program

stop. he was greeted by thousands of supporters when he returned from an overseas trip early this morning but there were more anti-government demonstrations overnight. the protests were sparked by police violence last friday, and at least three people have been killed. now, it was nearly four weeks ago that sergeant bo bergdahl was taken prisoner in afghanistan. his family says they received a letter they believe he wrote. the letter was delivered by the red cross. he has been seen on videos and there has been sporadic information about his whereabouts. it appears bergdahl is being held in pakistan stan. prince philip has been observed overnight in london. lucy mcdonald in london. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. prince philip is a very stoic man. he undertook seven public

enggements. he's 91 years old. he turns 92 on monday. the duke of edinburgh attended garden party at the buckingham palace before he was hospitalized. they'll operate on the 91-year-old today. the exploratory was planned and comes after stomach investigations last week. they stressed he was in very good health and walked into the hospital himself. >> he likes to be master and in control of everything and this is one occasion he can't be in control. this is one occasion he has do what the doctors tell him to do. >> reporter: he seems happy, even cracking jokes but was hospitalized just hours later. prince philip is expected to stay here at the london clinic for up to two weeks. the private hospital is a favorite for celebrities and royals. prince philip pulled out afternoon earlier event after becoming sick but did attend the

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. washington, d.c., showers today. atlanta, thunderstorms. and st. louis, a high of 77, partly sunny. afternoon thunderstorms in denver though, and partly sunny in seattle. a federal judge has ordered a second child to be put on the adult waiting list for donated lungs. he's the same judge who ordered a 10-year-old pennsylvania girl to be placed the list wednesday. as marlie hall reports, the rulings challenge the current organ transplant system. >> reporter: 11-year-old javier costa is dying of cystic fibrosis. his only hope is a lung transplant.

now thanks to a judge's order he and 10-year-old sarah murnaghan may get them. both children are now in line to receive donated lungs from adults, but that's not how the rules were written. trance pla transplant patients over the age of 12 children under the age of 12 can have it offered only to suitable candidates. both children are awaiting lungs here at the children's hospital in philadelphia. earlier this week health and human services secretary kathleen sebelius told pennsylvania congressman lou barletta that there were others who would also be eligible for donated lung. >> reporter: but lung surgeon johnson net says the rule should be for those most in need.

a wild chase in new mexico after this curious young bear rattled the nerves of people in one albuquerque neighborhood. cops chased the bear for miles trying to box the bear. he eluded the officers presumably returning home to the nearby mountains. in russia president vladimir putin and his wife are calling it quits. they announced on state television yesterday that their another 30 year wedding is over. they have two daughters, both in their 20s. two storm chasers from colorado were remembered for their dedication to the science of storms.

tim s tim samaras and his son paul were remembered. friends and family and other storm chasers gathered today to say gord. his wife kathy said she held like a cinderella marriage. >> he was being able to storm chase, go out and fulfill his passion as did paul. >> tim was a well known personality featured on discovery channel's "storm chaser" show. another storm chaser carl young also died alongside the father and son. well, this morning we're remembering a technicolor star from the golden age of hold. ester williams turned her swimming talents into a glamorous silver screen career. alison harmelin looks back on her life. >> reporter: ester williams aqua musical turned her into a big

star in the '40s and 50s. she set multiple records. williams par laid that success into a career in hollywood after the 1940 olympic games were canceled because of world war ii. she became known as hollywood's mermaid and a queen of the surf for the frothy films designed especially for her. the films featured lots of lavish swimming numbers. she was married four times. she was married to third husband fernando lamas for 22 years until his dealt in 1982. after retiring from acting in the early 60s, williams went on to lend her name to a line of swim wear and swimming pools. she initially dismissed her film says she couldn't act or sing or dance but years later she grew to appreciate her work saying she could see why her wholesome image became popular with
