thought he was a big deal, but this morning gandolfini is being remembered for his huge talent and good nature. he died suddenly in italy at the age of 51. no cause of death was given. it was his role as the tough and emotional crime boss tony soprano that turned gandolfini into a star. ♪ the groundbreaking "sopranos" aired for eight years with a finale which left viewers wondering. gandolfini avoided the spotlight saying he was much more comfortable doing smaller things. edward lawrence has more. >> yeah, i know, but i'm talking to you here on a human level. >> reporter: the actor best known for playing mob boss tony soprano on the hbo television series "sopranos" died while on vacation in italy.

the actor who played his uncle junior remembered gandolfini as a great actor and friend. >> everything showed on his face, every little nuance. but, you know, i miss him as a friend. he was a friend to everybody. >> reporter: fans were shocked to hear about his death. >> he was incredibly gifted, and he was very, very sharing of his art, and he's going to be missed. >> reporter: the actor rose to fame in his late 30s when the mob drama, the "sopranos" debuted in 1999. the mob series came to an end eight years later. gandolfini had little to say about the series ending as he walked the red carpet in 1997 in a private party to mark the end of the episode. he didn't think anything of it,

just a man doing what he called a silly job. >> to tell you the truth, i've wanted to get rid of it for a while now. >> reporter: gandolfini was also a stage actor doing broadway plays including "god of carnage." >> it's a strategy. >> reporter: hbo released a statement called the actor a great talent and a gentle and loving person. his managers said, quote, our hearts are shattered. gandolfini leaves behind a wife and daughter and son from a previous marriage. james gandolfini was 51 years old. edward lawrence for cbs news. >> well, reaction is pouring in from those who knew and worked with james gandolfini. "sopranos" creator david chase said he was a genius. he is one of the greatest actors of this or any time. great deal of that genius resided in those sad eyes. lorraine barackco who played his sigh psychiatrist said we lost a

giant today. i'm utterly heartbroken. and new jersey governor chris christie had this to say. it's an awful shock. he was a find actor, a rutgers alum, and a true jersey guy. this morning colorado firefighters are battling a new fire that's forcing the evacuation of dozens of homes. the lime gulch fire has burned some 500 acres in the pike national forest about 30 miles southwest of denver. the fire broke out yesterday possibly sparked by a lightning strike. it's being fueled by hot windy conditions, but no buildings are threatened, and no one has been injured. last night a fire near colorado springs destroyed more than 500 homes and killed two people. and this morning the taliban in afghanistan say they're willing to exchange an american soldure fehr five taliban soldiers being held at guantanamo bay prison. army sergeant bowe bergdahl disappearing in eastern afghanistan on june 3rd, 2009. a taliban spokesperson said as far as he knows bergdahl is in good condition. he said before bergdahl is

released the five taliban prisoners must be freed. on capitol hill lawmakers continue their investigation into nsa phone and internet surveillance programs. and now something else to consider. the director of the fbi says his agency uses drones for domestic surveillance. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. this is fining to add to that debate over privacy. fbi director robert mueller revealing for the first time the u.s. using drones inside the u.s. for surveillance. he also sent out a warning to those looking to dismantle the government program that collects data on americans. intelligence officials head back to capitol hill today for hearings on the nsa collection of phone and internet data. on wednesday fbi director robert mueller urged congress to think twice before making changes to the program. >> if we are to prevent terrorist attacks, we have to know and be in their communications. >> muller and others in the obama administration are trying

to make the case that these programs are needed. >> i'm most concerned about what's going on in the last couple of weeks because of the lack of clarity in the public debate. retired general michael hayden said some of the senators like rand paul are misguided. >> the last we thought nsa was doing, i'd be holding his coat for next filibuster. >> more privacy concerns were raced on wednesday when fbi director mueller revealed for the first time the fb be i uses drones for surveillance. >> does the fbi use drones for surveillance on u.s. soil? >> yes. >> i want to go onto a question and -- >> let me just put it in context, though, in a very, very minimal way. >> sure. >> muller says the fbi rarely uses drones. he admits there are no rules in place to protect citizens' privacy, but says they are currently being written.

now, the fbi used drones this year in standoff with a gunman where he was holding a 5-year-old boy in alabama as hostage. the fbi says any time they want to use drones for domestic surveillance, may must ask permission fefrt from the nsa. anne-marie? >> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. well, three naval academy midshipmen have been charged with sexually assaulting a student. they all played on the naval academy's football team. they're being charged with rape, sexual assault or other sexual misconduct. the alleged attack took place last year at an off campus house. the victim said she was drunk and the football players claimed to have had sex with her. on the "cbs moneywatch" the feds rattle the markets and the irs in new trouble. joya dawes is here in new york. good morning, joya. >> good morning, anne-marie.

good morning, everyone. fed chief ben bernanke finally clarified his comments about the fed bond buying program. after a two-day policy meeting wednesday the fed updated the outlook for the economy and bernanke said that's why the fed will most likely slow down its stimulus program. >> the committee currently anticipates it would be appropriate to moderate the monthly purchases later this year and if the subsequent data remain broadly aligned with current expectations for the economy, we would continue to dries the pace of purchases in measured steps through the first half of next year, ending purchases around mid-year. >> bernanke also expects the unemployment rate to fall to 6.8% by the end of 2014. on wall street bernanke's words spooked investors. the dow dropped 206 points and the nasdaq fell 31 points. tokyo's nikkei dropped

nearly 2%. hong kong's hang seng lost nearly 3%. well, the irs is caught in another controversy. the agency says it's has to pay $70 million in union bonuses. some republicans want the irs to follow a white house directive and cancel them. in april the obama administration ordered all agencies to stop handing out bonuses bought of automatic spending cuts. >> and one of tv's most popular pitch men has been fired. >> you're going to like the way you look, i guarantee it. >> george zimmer's also out as ceo of men's warehouse. he started the company in texas and made it into one of america's largest american clothing stores. the company gave no reason for the move but zimmer said he and the board disagreed on the company's director. >> joya dawes in new york. thank you, joya. well, coming up on the "morning news," winning the fight against the most commonly transmitted sexual disease. new pictures of mars offer some of the most detailed images yet of the planet's surface. you're watching the "cbs morning

since the vaccine was introduced in 2006 infection rates have dropped 56% among female teenagers. that's a large increase compared to what the government officials thought they would see. >> there could be an immunity, which means individuals are protected even though they haven't been protected themselves. >> reporter: according to the cdc, hpv causes about 19 thousand cancers in the u.s. and 8,000 cancers in men. throat cancers are the most common. the virus can also cause genital warts. the vaccine is controversial because it recommends girls and boys be vaccinated very young at ages 11 to 12 before their first sexual encounter. some parents are reluctant to vaccinate. some surveys show only 3% of the girls took the vaccine before age 13. it's even lower for boys.

been ruled out as a suspect. >> reporter: patriots' tight end aaron hernandez arrive at his sprawling house in north attleboro, massachusetts, with his mother at his side. he didn't speak to reporters. while hernandez was out, police detectives returned with a court document but got no answer at the door. officers spent hours searching the home tuesday evening. the body of semipro linebacker oden lloyd was found monday at an industrial park just a half mile from hernandez's home. a chevy suburban rented in hernandez's name was also left at the scene. a dozen state police officers searched surrounding woods and neighbors' property. a neighbor in lloyds chester community said he had seen hernandez 'there and he was seen dating the sister of hernandez's

wedny wa wednesday was juneteenth. the holiday that marks the end of slavery in the u.s. on capitol hill a statue was unveiled of frederick douglass, a leader in the abolitionist movement. jim axelrod introduces us to one man with personal ties to this man and his leader. >> reporter: no doubt the sight of the frederick douglass statue stirred feelings, but perhaps this man. >> my father was frederick douglass iii and my grandmother was booker t. washington's granddaughter. >> reporter: that's right. morris descends not from one historic african leader but two, not at that he always embraced his bloodlines. >> can you imagine growing up and see your ancestors, there are bridges named after him,

they're on schools and libraries? it can be pretty intimidating. that's quite a vast long shadow to grow up in. >> reporter: morris avoided the shadow while building a successful marketing career until one day his buddy passed along a magazine and the cover story pulled him. >> the cover story was 21st century slaves. i reacted the way most people do. the work didn't end with frederick douglass. i had two teenaged daughters who at the time were 9 and 12 years old, and got up and i walked into my girls'room and i couldn't look away. each and every one of us descends from somebody that made a difference. >> reporter: the frederick douglass family initiatives was born to teach about the 27 million people enslaved worldwide. morris has already spoken to 60,000 students. >> and frederick douglass said it's easier to build strong children than to repair broken
