burned and drivers report smoke in the area. we will bring you more unless as we get it -- information as we get it. a minivan that plummeted into the san francisco bay with its driver inside was pulled out of the water today. a commercial salvage company brought the minivan to the surface. daytona 500ers used sonar but -- divers used sonar. now police are frying to piece agent -- trying to piece together what happened. >> a lot of times you find out there may have been a medical issue behind it. we don't want to speck late until we talk to the family. >> the coast guard says there were other people in the car but they all got out safely. the van was found in about 25 feet of water. a group of sailors nearby saw what happened and immediately dove into the water to help. kpix 5's anne makovec talked to one of them about the desperate fight to save the driver. >> reporter: this home video shows the last few seconds before the van dropped below

the water line. >> it's haunting. >> reporter: the men you see pounding on the back window, members of a youth sailing team who happened to be nearby. >> it was just that we had to get it out like we had to save this person. >> reporter: andrew and his teammates were at a fundraiser at the golden gate yacht club. >> we heard some screaming and looked over and there's this van that had just gone in the water. and there's people screaming and people screaming and it was just like oh my god. >> reporter: six members of the team immediately jumped into this boat and traveled about 1,000 feet to where the van was sinking into the bay. >> well, i was driving and they were on the boat and already stripping down to get ready to jump into the water and grabbing the tools. >> reporter: three of the men armed with a screw driver and their bare fists tried to break the back window as the woman inside yelled for help. >> just pounding the windows as hard as they could. they got it to track. they couldn't get it to shatter as the van went down. >> reporter: even at that point they didn't give up hope, marking the spot for emergency workers rushing to the scene. but as the night went on it became clear there wouldn't be a happy ending. >> it's going to be hard to think about that every time we

sail in and out of there and it's one of the things we have to live with. >> reporter: they will be offered grief counseling to try to shake the nightmare they couldn't stop from coming true. in san francisco, anne makovec, kpix 5. >> the young men who attempted the rescue are all part of the american youth sailing force. the team competing in the america's cup races this fall. take a look at this charred mess left after a stolen car crash into a gas line sparking a destructive fire. a police officer spotted an unreported stolen car driving without headlights around midnight. when the officer tried to pull the car over, police say the driver took off. the teenager behind the wheel lost control. >> i had just turned off the tv and lay down and then heard the crash. and then when -- by the time i got outside, the car was already on fire and already blazing. >> one house is destroyed and another is badly damaged and

everyone inside the homes though got out okay. the driver was arrested and taken to juvenile hall. caltrans service is back to normal now after being disresulted earlier by a grass fire. the fire broke out above a tunnel on paul avenue near the train tracks. that's in san francisco's bay view district. the fire started around 2:00 this afternoon. firefighters quickly put it out but train service was suspended in both directions while crews worked at the scene. we're learning more about what may have led to the batch of bad bolds and steel rods on the new bay bridge. according to recently released caltrans' documents, several quality control problems are to blame. for example, hundreds of rods and bolts had been improperly treated with brake cleaner as well as an aerosol product. they were supposed to be blasted with grit to avoid contamination which makes rods brittle. and we will have more about the safety issues in a kpix 5 special tonight. it's called "the new bay bridge

-- is it safe?" . you can watch it here at 7:30. the latest survey is out and this year's survey counted more than 6400 homeless people. about half live on the streets. the rest stay in shelters or other housing. but a third of the homeless say that they're gay and about two- thirds are physically or mentally disabled or suffer from substance abuse. sunny skies over much of the bay area today and here's a live look outside in dublin. maybe. oh we don't have -- there it is. it's not going to look lake that for long -- like that for long though. kpix 5's elizabeth wenger is here to talk about changes on the way. elizabeth? >> i hope you enjoyed it today. it's hard to believe with all the sunshine and blue skies we could be talking about bringing the umbrellas back out of the closet but it's true. we have a rainmaker coming our way. high pressure is weakening as we speak over the bay area but right now temperatures are already in the mild side. santa rosa still at 88 degrees

fun... but a youth football camp goal. here summer sports are supposed to be fun, but a youth football camp in berkeley has a bigger goal. here's kpix 5's patrick sedillo on the program that's based on tough love. >> why you all taking so long? chop him. chop him. get out of here. ain't no sitting down. hurry up jordan get up. >> reporter: every saturday afternoon in berkeley, sam pablo park. coach todd walker conducts football training for kids that come for exercise, fun and camaraderie. but leave with much more. >> you know a lot of them don't have a father figure or if they do he might not be around or in they life. we get them out here. we be real strict and firm out here. >> reporter: walker who happens to work in a local mortuary sometimes goes to extreme lengths to teach his lessons. >> they kind of a little bit older, bring a body bag. you know a few items from the mortuary and show them you know it's either this or that.

up. this is incredible. a sacramento girl with cerebral palsy is determined to finish an upcoming triathlon with little help from her dad. he and his daughter are training for the sacramento international triathlon. and they're hitting the road to prove physical limitations are no obstacles. dad says the toughest part comes after he swims for a mile. pulling olivia in a kayak. >> so out of the kayak i will carry her from the i can yak up the -- kayak up the river embankment and over to the bike transition area. >> not just go along for the ride. she will pedal her way for a quarter mile and then walk across the finish line. the race is next sunday in sacramento. that's cool. >> all right. you don't need a telescope to see tomorrow morning's big lunar event. it's a supermoon that's getting ready the make its appearance. that is what the moon looked like over los angeles last

could see a little marine layer i especially along the coast but the really weigh chings are coming sunday. -- big changes are coming sunday. the biggest differences are a lot more clouds and a lot cooler with a good chance of rain mainly in the north bay by tomorrow afternoon and evening. more of what we saw today and possibly even hotter comes by the end of next week. so here's what it looks like out over the pay right now. you can see the -- bay right now. you can see the sailboats and blue skies and sunshine. it was a gorgeous summer day across the bay area and temperatures are still beautiful out there. 88 in anita rosa. oakland 73. nice and mild. san francisco, 65. 65 degrees in san francisco and low 70s right now in san jose. so it's because of this ridge of high pressure that's what's been keeping us in the nice warming trend for the past few days but the high pressure is leaving us and we were actually watching a couple low pressure systems. one in the northwest and another one in the pacific. that's bringing us the pretty big changes over the next 48

hours. sunday into tuesday. so this is your weather forecast for tomorrow. the biggest difference like i said with the clouds and the cooler weather today we reached into the 90s. our hottest spot will only be in the mid- to upper 70s. going to be in the low 60s around the coast. so we'll time things out with futurecast. and mainly in the north bay that's kind of what we're watching in terms of the sprinkles and light rain beginning tomorrow afternoon early evening and then in the overnight sunday into monday, that's when we could see some rain fall all across the bay area. going to slowly spread further south and we could see a couple of wet morning commutes definitely on monday and possibly tuesday as well. before we finally dry out and it starts to feel like summer again. so here's a look at your overnight lows. mainly in the 50s overnight tonight. and again we could see a little bit of a marine layer. partly to mostly cloudy skies for the rest of us. 68 tomorrow is your high in oakland. upper 70s in fairfield. you can cool off along the coast. only reaching a high of 59 in pacifica and low 70s in
