captioning funded by cbs the "cbs morning news" for monday, june 24th, this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, june 24th, 2013. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, as if the case of edward snowden didn't already look and sound like a spy novel, now the former security contractor who leaked details of a government secret surveillance program is racing around the globe in order to escape extradition to the united states. on sunday snowden left hong kong where the u.s. was seeking his extradition. he flew to moscow where he spent the night in the airport. and today he is believed to be headed to cuba and possibly to ecuador where he is seeking asylum, all to avoid charges of espionage here in the united states. tara mergener is in washington with more. good morning, tara. >> good morning, anne-marie. well, this morning ecuador's foreign minister says his government is analyzing edward snowden's asylum request and

that it has to do with freedom of exhibit. meantime here in washington, lawmakers are warning countries that help snowden are risking a relationship with the united states. edward snowden's end run around extradition to the u.s. got under way sunday. the former contractor and spiller of secrets arrived in moscow on a commercial flight. snowden fled from hong kong where he'd been hiding out since revealing details of the nsa's phone and internet surveillance programs earlier this month. snowden is now trying to seek asylum in ecuador. wikileaks founder julian assange was granted asylum in ecuador and was living in the london embassy since last year. >> he has for obvious reasons good knowledge of extradition and we have acted as go-tweens.

>> snowden seized on the chance to leave after hong kong officials rebuffed the united states' request to extradite him. state department officials tell cbs news snowden's passport has been revoked, and in a statement said persons wanted on felony charges such as mr. snowden should not be allowed to proceed in any further international travel other than is necessary to return him to the united states. >> i think the chase is on. >> on capitol hill lawmakers are accusing china and russia of siding with snowden. >> i had actually thought that china would see this as an opportunity to improve relations and extradite him to the united states. >> i hope we'll chase him to the ends of the earth, bring him to justice, and let russia know there'll be consequences if they harbor this guy. >> the u.s. government is charging him with three crimes, two of which fall under the espionage act.

if convicted he faces a maximum of 30 years in prison, but right now, anne-marie, authorities just can't seem to get their hands on him. >> tara mergener in washington. thank you, tara. well, the south african government says the former south african president nelson mandela is in critical condition at this time. he's been in the hospital for two weeks fighting a lung condition and his condition has deteriorated within the past 24 hours. mark phillips is in pretoria. mark, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. well, the government's assessment of nelson mandela's condition has changed pretty dramatically from what was seen as hopeful to now pretty grim. this came after south african president jacob zuma visited him at the hospital yesterday. he consulted with the medical team. they issuesed a statement saying the condition had gone from what they had previously said, stable to critical. this corresponds to what we understand has been a general

decline in nelson mandela's condition, in fact, over pretty much the two weeks he has been in hospital that the initial lung infection he was initially admitted for had become even more complicated, that he was not experiencing other vie tall organ malfunctions and is not encouraging at all. the statement here is the doctors are doing everything to get his, nelson's condition improved and are making sure he's comfortable and in good hands. that's a remarkable change in tone to what they had previously been saying. there had been hope in the previous descriptions of the condition. and now it seems the world is being prepared for the worst. >> mark phillips in pretoria. thank you, mark. this morning trial is scheduled for george zimmerman. zimmerman says he acted in self-defense when he shot and killed florida teenager trayvon martin last year. marley hall is in sanford, florida. good morning, marley.

>> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. while the city of sanford is bracing itself for the start of this murder trial and all the media attention it will bring, and jurors in this case will be sequestered and will zbichb a life of almost total seclusion. opening statements will begin this morning in the trial of george zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer accused of murdering trayvon martin. assistant state attorney bernie de la rionda has been called fiery and aggressive. >> you're going have the state basically put on a roadmap to set out what they intend to show the jury. >> reporter: defense attorney mark o'mara is described as laid back and thought frl. >> i don't think they're really going to show their hand. they're going to kind of hold back. >> reporter: zimmerman's defense team did score a victory when the judge in the case made a ruling on who could testify about the voice heard yelling for help in a 911 call. >> do you think he's yelling

help? >> yes. >> all right. what is your name and phone number? >> just -- there's gunshots. >> reporter: the state had lined up expert witnesses to testify that it was martin's voice yepping for help. the defense claims it's the other way around. >> he got on top of me somewhere around here. and that's when i started screaming for help. >> reporter: on saturday the judge ruled the experts will not be allowed to testify, saying the science they used to make their determination was unreliable. >> so they're going to leave it to the jury to basically make the determination as to who was crying for help. >> reporter: six jurors, all women, will have to make that decision on their own. and they'll have some time to formulate that decision. this trial could go on for as many as four weeks. anne-marie? >> marley hall in sanford, florida. thank you, marley. well, coming up on the "morning news," crisis in canada, widespread flooding in western canada forces tens of thousands from their homes as high waters head downstream.

walkdaredevil nik wallenda daredevil nik wallenda walked a two-inch steel cable some 1,500 feet above the river near the grand canyon. the distance was 1,400 feet across and he did it in 22 minutes without a harness. along the way wallenda was buffeted by 30-mile-an-hour winds. he also struggled with dust on and around his contact lens. wallenda prayed constantly along the way. he hopes his next death-defying walk between the empire state building and the chrysler building in new york. that's about a half mile -- about half a mile in height above the ground.

an air show in dayton, ohio, resumed one day after a stuntperson and pilot were killed in the crash. there was a performance but without anyone riding on the wing. saturday's horrific crash was captured on camera. federal safety investigators say it could take several days to determine the cause. the pilot was identified as charlie schwenker. the wing walker was identified as jane wicker. in a wildfire burning near some of the southwest colorado's most popular tourist areas doubled in size over the weekend. the south fork fire has burned an estimated 1,400 square miles of the rio grande national forest. the fire is within three miles of the resort town of south fork which has been evacuated. so far no buildings have been destroyed and no injuries reported. it's one of at least a dozen wildfires burning in colorado. >> and in western canada folks are reeling from major flooding. 27 communities in the province of alberta are under states of emergency.

kashlgs calgary, alberta's largest city, was swamped. evacuees are getting ready to return home. at least four were killed and a person is missing. drain ya andrea lucia reports. >> reporter: floodwaters are reseeding but life is not returning to normal for its more than 1 million residents. >> it's a deserted area. i've never seen it before. strange. >> reporter: 75,000 people have begun trickling back home, but parts of downtown are still inaccessible. highways remain empty, and the oil capital is closed for business. >> a big chunk of downtown still without power. don't know. may be without power for days. >> reporter: 15 feet of water filled the saddledome arena, home of the calgary flames. the ceo, ken keen.

two buy outcompanies bought hostess, maker of twinkies, for $210 million last year. the cakes will be sold more widely now than in the past and they're expected to be on store shelves starting july 15th. "monsters university" earned top honors at the weekend box office. the animated disney movie features the voices of billy crystal and john goodman. it earned $82 million in ticket sales. and "world war z," the brad pitt zombie movie, was second with $66 million. the super man movie, "man of steal" movie was third at $41 million. anne-marie? >> erica ferrari in new york. thank you, erica. in sports now, we begin with interleague baseball and a texas three-game sweep of st. louis. the game at busch stadium was delayed nearly three hours because of rain. the rangers' ian kinsler had two hits including this single that drove in the tie-breaking run. in the seventh inning. texas beat the cards, 2-1. and it was a wild one in

showers in seattle today with a high of 68. well, a new study suggests 30-somethings have mostly nothing when it comes to having money in the bank. the urban institute says the average net worth for people ages 29 to 37 is down 21% from three decades ago. the study attributes the disparity to high college debt and a decline in home ownership. home ownership is a significant source of individual wealth. and texas appears to be on the way to having some of the strictest abortion regulation in the country. hundreds of protesters objected surrender. the legislature would ban abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy. it also would limit procedures to surgical centers. supporters of the measure say it will improve women's health care. the body of james gandolfini reportedly arrived back in the u.s. late last night.
