good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, president obama wraps up his visit to the west african nation of senegal this morning. later he and his family are scheduled to travel to south africa. on sunday they'll go to tanza a tanzania. last night president obama attended a state dinner. later he visited goree island, a historic port where slaves from africa passed through on their way to the new world. mr. obama said he would like to visit nelson mandela to south africa, however, mandela remains in critical condition at a pretoria hospital where he's been treated for a lung infection since june 8th. mark phillips is outside that hospital. mark, good morning. what is the latest on that situation? >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. well, today marks the end of the third week of nelson mandela's hospitalization here for the lung infection that you've mentioned. we understand as well that that

condition has deteriorated to affect other interior vital organs as well. the condition here has remained visited here every day rushed with flowers hearing that he had taken a turn for the worse. doctors have managed to stabilize him. there has been no bulletin as of yet today burke the fact that he's in the hospital and the fact he's been here for so long has drawn crowds of well-wishers and curiosity-seekers. here those crowds have groan over the course of the stay. that continues today. young schoolchildren were brought here today to sing the praises of mandela and wish him well. as the whole situation

state of mr. mandela's condition. they will follow the mandela family lead on whatever they do. anne-marie? >> mark phillips in pretoria. thank you, mark. well, during his visit to senegal, president obama downplayed the international chase for national security administration's leaker edward snowden. he's seek asylum in ecuador. president obama said he'll not go to great lengths to capture snowden. >> aisle not have one case of a suspect who we're trying to extradite suddenly being elevated to the point where i've got to start doing wheeling and dealing and trading on a whole host of other issues simply to get a guy extradited. i'm not going to be scrambling jets to get a 29-year-old

hacker. >> now, mr. obama said he was not certain that all of the secret documents that snowden had in his possession have been released. a bill to significantly change the nation's immigration law has passed in the senate. it now moves to the house where big changes to the measure are expected. tara mergener is in washington with the latest, tara, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. it was a rare show of bipartisanship with 14 senate republicans voting in favor of the bill, but the celebration was quickly tempered by the house speaker who says it is dead on arrival. >> the bill as amended is passed. >> it was passed with sweeping reform in bipartisan support. >> to our friends in the house, we ask for your consideration and we stand ready to sit down and negotiate with you. >> speaker of the house john boehner said he will not bring up the senate bill for a vote.

he says house republicans will create their own immigration reform plan. >> we're going to go home for the recess next week and listen to our constituents, and when we get back we're going to have a conference on july 10th about a discussion for a way forward. >> one of the sticking points for the house republicans is what to do with the nation's 11 million undocumented immigrants. >> i like the fact that people want to become part of america because it's an idea that nobody owns. >> the senate bill provides temporary legal status for undocumented workers and eventually citizenship. if they pass a back ground check and pay fines and back taxes. senate leaders say they couldn't have passed the bill without that provision. democrats say the house bill will need to have to pass the citizenship as well. >> we know who's in the majority, but if you want our vote, it thoos be something that our members can vote for. >> but many republicans say citizenship rewards people who

broke the law. and any house bill is expected to focus on border security and finding immigrants who have overstayed their visas. anne-marie, the debate goes on. >> indeed, tara mergener in washington. thank you, tara. well, a federal jury indicted dzhokhar tsarnaev. the indictment covers 30 counts including charges that he conspired with his brother tamerlan in the use of weapons of mass destruction. he was involved in a shoot-out and could face the death penalty if convicted. bob orr reports. they say they built their pressure cooker bombs over a two-month period beginning in february. they used black powder for mortar shells purchased at this new hampshire store. they downloaded bomb making instructions from al qaeda's online magazine and they charge

they coordinated their attack, talking by cell phone just seconds before remotely detonating the bombs. in addition to the bomber, dzhokhar also faces murder charges in the death of a police officer. he was killed before the situation was disrupted by watertown police. tamerlan was killed in the 20-hour confrontation and hours later zor corps was captured in a nearby boat. it was on the wall of the boat they found an apparent motive. as cbs first reported, tsarnaev wrote a jihady creed. he said, you hurt one, you hurt

earth's power grids and communications. while, already charged with murder in an execution-style killing, former new england patriots player aaron hernandez is already charged with a douche from last year. meanwhile police are searching for ernest wallace in connection with the killing of a semi-pro football player. marlie hall has more. >> reporter: aaron hernandez appeared in court for a second day in a row. he asked for bail a day after being arrested for murder. >> there is no eyewitness testimony, no ex-kulpa torrey missions. >> reporter: the former all-american football player is accused in the execution-style shooting of odin lloyd last week. his body was found in an industrial park a mile from hernandez's home.

prosecutors say they built their case on video, text cells and cell phone tower records. >> he is a flight risk. he has the means and the motivation to flee. >> reporter: lloyd was dating the sister of hernandez's fiancee. police arrested hernandez wednesday, escorting him out of the house with his hands cuffed behind his back. investigators tell "the boston globe" the 23-year-old may also have been involved in a double murder last july. law enforcement officials say odin lloyd may have had information about hernandez's role in those killings. the judge denied bail. >> it's believed by the jury that this gentleman either by himself or with two other people that he requested come to the commonwealth basically in a cold-blooded fashion killed a person because that person disrespected him. >> reporter: the judge said if he doesn't follow society's rules, he shouldn't be free.

intense heat envelops the southwest with temperatures soaring the century mark and expected to break records in many cities. thunderstorms rolled through the mid-atlantic and northeast with some becoming severe and hail. in the south, a stretch from arkansas to the carolinas while the west stays mostly dry and hot. on the "cbs moneywatch" now, mortgage rates jump and school snacks get a healthy makeover. ashley morrison is here in new york with that and more. good morning, ashley. >> good morning to you, anne-marie. well, average mortgage rates soared to their highest level in years, evidence of the possibility that the fed will ease the stimulus will affect the market. the 30-year fixed has surged to 4ment 46%. it's the heist since 2011. it was at 3.93% last week, making this the biggest jump in three years.

>> asian markets got a boost after news that japan's industrial production rose for the fourth straight month. tokyo's nikkei jumped 3% while hong kong sank 1%. the dow jumped 114 points, while the nasdaq rose 25 points. student loan rates are set to double on monday thanks to stalemate in the senate. the senate won't vote until july 10th on extension of the current interest rates. that means subsidized stafford loans will double to 6.8% on july 1st. the house already passed a bill to keep the rates steady. and chocolate chip cookies, ice cream cups, and other goodies have been expelled from schools. for the first time ever, the agriculture department is telling schools what kind of snacks it can serve students. junk food is out, replaced by healthier items like granola bars and low fat tortilla chips

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. washington, d.c., thunderstorms. atlanta, thunderstorms as well. st. louis will be partly cloudy though. partly sunny in denver, and mostly sunny in seattle with a high of 84. in florida, star prosecution witness spent a second day on the stand in the murder trial of george zimmerman. she was talking to trayvon martin on the phone just moments before zimmerman shot him. susan mcginnis reports. >> reporter: rachel jeantel says she was on the phone with trayvon martin when zimmerman approached him in this sanford neighborhood.

she claims she heard a scuffle. >> i heard trayvon saying get off >> reporter: but during cross-examination defense attorney don west repeatedly pressed her on what she heard and if she really heard what was said. >> i did hear get off, sir. >> but you don't know what it meant because you didn't see any of this, correct? >> no, sir. >> west questioned jeantel's credibility, pointing out that she sent a letter to trayvon's parents about what she heard that night but didn't sign her real name. he also accused her of changing her story. >> are you sure those are the words trayvon martin said or could you have been sort of trying to figure out what was said and that's what you came up with? >> i'm sure. >> reporter: jeantel's testimony is key to the prosecution's case. the state is trying to prove the neighborhood watchman chased down the teenager before shooting and killing him. but defense claims it was martin that attacked their client. >> you thought it was just a

fight because you knew it was one you thought trayvon was planning to start. >> no, sir. >> reporter: jeantel was defiant at times during her two-day testimony. >> are you listening? >> reporter: luis calderon believes that could hurt her credibility with the jury. >> she's combative and it could take away. if you don't like the source, you're not going to like the message. family, friends, and fellow actors say good-bye to james gandolfini at his funeral service in new york. in attendance his co-stars from the hbo series t"the sopranos" s well as fans who wanted to salut his work. >> i just feel like the loss of the character was a personal loss somehow. you know, it's hard to describe. it's so sad, and i just can't find the words to express it.

nearly 70 years ago, a world war ii veteran put his life on hold to fight for his country. well, this month he was able to achieve a lifelong dream. carter evans has the story. >> my battle station was right up here on the main mass. >> reporter: 88-year-old paul lopez was just 17 when he joined the navy. it was 1943, right before the start of his senior year at santa barbara high. fighting for your country was more important. >> right. that was more important, and so we left. >> reporter: lopez manned anti-aircraft guns on the "uss maryland." the battleship was hit by a japanese suicide pilot right near the philippines. >> you just can't describe, you
