in the bart labor negotiations. the union for the bart workers now say they will strike. kpix 5's don knapp is here with the very latest. >> reporter: after what they say was another fruitless day attempting to negotiate with bart, negotiators then walked out of the building after announcing that despite all this time they had spent, they will go on strike. >> let me just say that, uhm, on behalf of seiu, we want to let the riders know that we are giving them notice that this union will be on strike effective tomorrow evening. we will wait until the trains are put to bed. we will not strike before the system is safe and sound. and we do this with regret. >> reporter: been kept waiting for 36 hours for substantial proposal. and now no longer think they can resolve all the issues by tomorrow night's deadline. the two sides have been far apart on issues which include salary, pensions, healthcare and safety. but a bart spokesman gives a

different version of what's going on upstairs. >> we have been preparing a proposal. it was ready about 3:45. we called the mediator to come up and receive it. he came up, notified us that the unions had left, handed us several proposals from them including an economic proposal, and told us that we could email our proposal to the unions. >> reporter: so with about 30 hours still to go before the contract runs out, the union says emphatically it will be on strike come monday morning. but to be clear, there is still time to work out an agreement and both sides say they are willing to listen. frank? >> that's good news. okay, could be a manic monday though, don. next week's transit mess could get worse. the operators and mechanics of ac transit have been involved in labor negotiations for three months. they also have a june 30th contract deadline tomorrow night and ac transit officials say they haven't reached an agreement either. the company says bus riders should also look at alternate

transportation in case there is a strike with ac transit. if there is a bart strike, we'll have live team coverage starting monday morning on kpix 5 and kcbs radio and you can get all the information you need at kpix.com for your bart survival guide including the list of commute alternatives. our other big story is the heat. throughout much of the bay area, some places reached triple digits and this is just the beginning. shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, all around today. people just trying to stay cool. kpix 5's roberta gonzales is here with the heat warnings that are in place right now. >> reporter: out of 11 bay area counties, only three did not see temperatures above 100 degrees today, that was san francisco, san mateo and marin counties. all those areas in red, those are the places that had that excessive heat warning in effect until tuesday night with temperatures averaging up to 25 degrees above normal. we are going to heighten the

risk of heat exhaustion with a multi-day heat wave and very warm nights with little recovery anticipated. so today, highs so far up to 105 degrees in livermore, record heat in santa rosa at 102. record heat in oakland 85. we had a record high of 92 in mountain view. and it's only going to get hotter. expect more heat, especially inland. very low relative humidity with high fire danger. and each and every day especially if there is a bart strike and more automobiles on the roadways, we are going to see unhealthy air quality especially for children in the bay area. frank, the big question now, when is it going to end? details coming up. >> hopefully before july is over. the hot weather means alum rock park in san jose will be closed to the public tomorrow. park rangers are trying to reduce the potential for fire- related emergency. they say hot, dry breezy conditions this weekend prompted that move. people are feeling the heat all over the region.

in las vegas, emergency crews are now stationing extra ambulances throughout the vegas strip and warning tourists about the dangers there. 200 people got sick or passed out in the heat at an outdoor concert there yesterday. the scorching temperatures are a big problem at smaller airports. planes have been grounded at bermuda dunes airport in palm springs because it's just too hot to fly. that's because the hotter the air is the thinner it is meaning planes can't get enough lift to get off the ground. let's take a live look at civic center, where pride weekend festivities are under way. today is known as pink saturday saturday. >> a pink triangle went up on twin peaks today. 200 people created it which takes up about an acre. it started back in 1995 as a project done secretly overnight

so police wouldn't catch them. 18 years later the tradition has been embraced by san francisco officials. late today though opponents of same-sex marriage filed an emergency motion asking the u.s. supreme court to stop gay weddings here in california. the petition is from an arizona-based group called alliance defending freedom. it says the ninth u.s. circuit court of appeals acted prematurely and unfairly yesterday when it limited a -- lifted a freeze on same-sex marriages. the group says opponents still have 22 days to file a lawsuit challenging the high court's ruling. meanwhile the weddings continue though today at san francisco city hall. doors open up around 9:00 this morning. and by 1:00, more than 150 licenses had been issued. kpix 5 reporter patrick sedillo talked to them. reporter: the line for same- sex marriage started early this morning at san francisco city hall. by 8:30, there were over 100 people waiting to get married. >> these are the words i thought i'd never say in my life. i'm getting married. >> reporter: inside the line stretched down the hall from the county clerk's office for licenses.

two men have waited half a century for this day to come. sporting matching tiffany wedding bands. >> we figured we would have to wait until july or august. >> reporter: they didn't. the stay that was lifted by the supreme court on friday also coincided with gay pride weekend in the city adding to the event the joy of people in love making life-long commitments. >> ecstatic. >> recognizing the magnitude of the historicness of the moment. >> last night i think our office --we were out here until 9:00 making sure that we had every, single document that people needed to be recorded to be part of the public record. >> reporter: volunteers from all over the bay area enlisted to help. >> we found a ton of folks being trained by the city administrator being deputized to perform marriages and to help to usher people to the right places and answer questions. >> reporter: two women newlyweds have realized their dream. >> we're married. >> yeah. >> it's amazing. we're married, guys. >> yeah.

>> reporter: since friday afternoon at 3:00, dozens of same-sex couples have been married here at city hall in san francisco. they are open sunday, as well. reporting from san francisco, patrick sedillo, kpix 5. >> san francisco is the only county in california performing same-sex marriage today. all other counties will be performing them on monday. coming up, pay more to get from point a to point b. the price of your next fillup is going up. and the city celebration that drew people outside even in the heat today. you kids should count yourselves lucky.

a parade and festival markee 30th anniversary of east pa alto becoming a city. it had east palo alto celebrating a birthday today. a parade marked the 30th anniversary of the east palo alto becoming a city. it had been an unincorporated part of san mateo county before that. today's party included music, food, activities. a fireworks show tonight will cap off their big birthday celebration. throughout much of the bay area, people were looking for ways to beat the heat today. we found some people who actually strategized for staying cool but as kpix 5's anne makovec shows us, some of the plans didn't work out. >> we decided that we would try to beat the heat and didn't quite make it. >> reporter: even with temperatures scorching in san ramon, debbie banks went garage saling and found votive candles that had melted in the sun before noon.

>> i just laughed and thought, this is just crazy hot weather to have candles that are melted already. >> reporter: just the kind of crazy hot weather that inspires tom to stock up for an outdoor party. how could you even think about lighting up a barbecue on a day like this? >> you know, as a dad i got to do what i got do to take care of everybody. >> reporter: desperately avoiding heating up the oven in the house. >> someone has to sacrifice and stand by the heated barbecue so that will be me. >> reporter: and it's not just today people are dealing with triple-digit heat. this heat wave is going to last well into next week. some people strategize and tried to do their outside work early in the day. but not arlene meehan. >> i like my sleep so i slept in a little saturday. >> reporter: are you regretting that now that it's hotter? >> no. actually not. i'm used to this. i grew up in the philippines, and so this is nothing for me. we have a pool so i'll be jumping in afterwards. >> reporter: everybody has their strategy.

[ laughter ] >> reporter: in san ramon, anne makovec, kpix 5. >> some relief for a dog in a hot car in san rafael. the -- the car was parked on the side of 101 while the dog went for gas. the chp officer stopped and gave it water and waited for the driver to come back. the windows were down. what's going on? this is crazy. >> beat the heat and check your back seat. that's what we say. >> good point. >> you can forget so easily especially when you start getting beaten down by the heat. we have several more days to go. that's what makes this current heat wave so unusual. it's not just a little blip in the screen or in the forecast. it's a several-day heat wave is going to take its toll.

good evening, everybody. not only is it hot here but in other parts of the state. we talk you to death valley. these folks here are from australia and they say, hey, at least it's a dry heat. [ laughter ] >> it had 134 degrees there the hottest place tying a record from 1913. currently beautiful scene at golden gate bridge. how often do you ever see it crystal clear there? look at all the tourists out in force to take advantage of the beautiful scene. this evening currently in san francisco it's at 73 degrees. we're now under 100 in livermore. it's 97 in santa rosa and in the 70s throughout much of the peninsula at this hour after reaching highs today up to 99 in redwood city. a record mountain view a record oakland at 85 degrees. another record shattered in santa rosa at 102. pleasanton came close at 106 today. the old record 107 set in 1950.
