traffic at 4:00 a.m.. >> that's right. it will be a little flexible with workers schedules today. let's get a check of what it looks like on the roads. it's 4:01 this morning. some areas of overnight roadwork. this is a great night to head out. you can see mostly green and along the peninsula. i want to mention a couple of things. system wide no service. ac transit are not on strike. they will offer extra between downtown oakland and san francisco. we are live at bart headquarters. good morning, kate. >> reporter: good morning. we are looking at one of the biggest traffic nightmares here in the bay area after both

sides claim that each gave up just hours ago. [ chanting ] >> reporter: picketers were here all night. union and bart management say both sides couldn't find common ground on the major issues, salary, pension, health care and safety. it means the only thing they could agree on was not to let the commuters offer the consequences. >> we apologize for the lack of citizenship and board of directors and bart management staff to take into account the impact it will have on the bay area. will let's not make the commuters suffer. why make it about the bay area? >> reporter: unfortunately

that's what we are looking at, 400,000 riders without bart to get to work. every other mode of transit will face serious impacts. they say it could mean an extra 60,000 cars on the roads this morning. so transportation experts and others are urging to explore other options, car pool, buses, ferries, work from home if you can. reporting live, back to you in the studio. >> and is there any word on when the negotiations will resume? >> yes. it is the big question this morning. unfortunately we don't have an answer to that. we are expected to hear from bart management in the next hour. >> okay. and guys we'll be covering this throughout the morning commute. it will be a busy morning. back to you. >> all right. thank you. here is a look at the key sticking points this morning. the union wants a pay hike of

about 21% over three years. management is offering just 8% over four years. bart wants workers to pay higher health insurance premiums. they pay about $92 a month now. the agency also wants employees to contribute more towards their pensions. there is a break for east bay commuters. union contracts expired four hours ago at midnight however union leaders told us talks are continuing with ac transit leaders. >> there has been some progress. there have been items that have moved off of the table but nothing that i feel they would ratify. >> union leaders say they will give it at least 24 hours notice before they take any action. a live look at mobile 5. it's on its way to richmond bridge which i would assume

they are going up and heading down. it will take them to to bridge. all this morning we'll have mobile 5 going through to give you an idea of how the commute is going. that's a live view of the traffic right now. i can tell you from personal experience if you want to avoid any of the traffic chaos get up at about 2:30 in the morning. last time there was a strike against bart was in 1997. it lead to major traffic back ups and long commutes. the 1997 strike lasted six days. workers with the city of oakland will be on strike today. they rallied last week and today six city employee unions will stage a one-day walk out. services will operate as normal. here is what you can expect over in oakland as a result. there will be no parking enforcement in oakland today. there will be no street sweeping. pools, recreation and senior centers as well as facilities will be close today. all public libraries will also

has scene. the last time they went on strike it lasted about six days, as you both mentioned this morning. this morning commuters are hoping that's not the case. we know picketers were out all night in the the midnight deadline ran out. bart claims the two unions walked away from the table. the unions say it was bart management that threw in the towel. they couldn't find a major sticking point on health care and safety. 400,000 riders will have to find another way to get to work. transportation officials say it will have serious impact to other modes of transit and as a result we can expect to see an extra 60,000 cars on the road. we are not sure when negotiations will continue. we are expect today hear from bart management and both labor or union workers within the

if you want to car pool that would be a great option. you can use the bart parking lots for free. there will be drivers and riders ready to go. the car pool lanes may have extended hours as well. so that would be a great option especially later on. all right. let's get a check on our maps and talk about mass transit. a couple of things, golden gate ferry service is at capacity. they will not be able to add any extra ferry service this morning. alameda partner bay, everyone is trying to pull together for the monday morning commute. that's the latest. let's get an update on your forecast. is the heat wave over yet? >> no. we'll crank up the temperatures a little bit higher than yesterday. it will be hot again in spots especially away from the immediate coastline. we are starting out with a few

patches of fog along the coastline. some of it made its way along the bay. some of the temperatures already in the mid-60s. by the afternoon the heat is on again as high as 105 degrees in some spots inland. you'll see a lot of 80s in the bay. out along the coastline temperatures in the upper 60s and low 7 0s. still we have the strong ridgeover high pressure over the desert southwest. it will crank up a few high clouds otherwise it remains locked in place. heat advisory in effect for much of the area away from the immediate coastline. no relief in site until almost next weekend. with that in mind be prepared. 94 in san jose and 71 in pacifica. 104 in pit during pittsburgh.

82 in oakland. 75 degrees in san francisco. a very pleasant 69 in daily city. it looks like the next couple of days will heat temperatures up even further. today is 107 in some of the hottest spots on tuesday and wednesday. a big difference towards the coastline. we'll start to cool down on the 4th of july which is thursday. the temperatures dropping off in the 90s next weekend. >> do you know what it was doing a week ago today? >> almost raining? >> it was raining an inch and a third. a week ago we were talking rain and today -- >> it's amazing. no records expected today. >> really? >> yeah. last time was in 85. we had 110 in livermore. >> thank you. it is 4:16 on your monday morning. the heat is taking the toll on the power grid. it is called a flex alert for today and tomorrow.

the late afternoon. the pe this heat wave picks up steam. >> we are all encouraged to reduce our energy use especially in the late. the peak is expected to happen around 4:30 this afternoon. terrible news coming out of arizona this morning. 19 firefighters are dead in one of the worst disasters involving a wild fire. a fire exploded in size yesterday. >> reporter: a wild fire burning out of control in arizona caught up with the very men sent in to tame it. >> 19 firefighters were killed in probably the worst disaster that has taken place here in the state of arizona. >> reporter: the men were members of the granite mountain hot shots crew, a crew designed to fight wild fires. they worked in new mexico last summer.

>> they will go out there with 40, 50-pounds of equipment and sleep out there and develop fire lines and put protections between homes, natural resources and still try to remain safe. these are quality people. >> reporter: it started friday from a lightning strike. high winds whipped up the flames sunday. >> this fire was very radical in behavior. they were caught up in the situation. >> reporter: people were caught up in a bad situation as well. >> it looked like we were going to get spared then the wind came up and flew right back on us. >> reporter: initial estimates are as many as 200 homes in the town could be destroyed. >> that fire was just a storm. what do they call that? it went through sweeping through so fast and so high. >> reporter: they are

bringingin additional firefighters today to battle the blaze. another win for same sex marriage. anthony kennedy denied a request to stop gay weddings in california. the numbers are in. san francisco county clerk issued 563 same sex marriages since the 9th circuit court of appeals. san francisco was the only county open this weekend to perform the weddings. all other counties will be ready to do so today. gunfire erupted killing two men. it happened just before 7:00 near golden gate avenue as the streets were full of rebellers from the gay pride parade. the victims are expected to survive and were hit in the leg. chopper 5 was overhead as people packed into the civic center, many waving rainbow

flags. gay right supporters filled the parade route with a noisy dancing floating party. more than 200 groups took part in the parade including city departments and several bay area organizations. as major soft san francisco in 2004 he allowed the issue answer of same sex marriage licenses. >> you know what i'm saying? >> yes. i love all of the craziness. that's what it's all about. >> as the festivities went on city hall was open and marrying same sex couples. two berkeley women were plaintiffs in the lawsuit that lead to prop 8's reversal. prepare to pay more. new price for expired meters. they all start today. doesn't everything start today? it will go from 72 to $74

downtown and from 62 to $64 in other parts of the city. san francisco, by the way, has the most extensive parking meter fines in the country. gas prices are also going up. a 3.5 cents increase approved back in if february. it is actually an excise tax which means aloofly revenue will go to -- california will have the most gas tax at 72- cents a gallon. and time now is 24 minutes after 4:00. bart train service is us spended today. we have crews across the area to get you through the morning commute. and mobile 5 just past the university exit there. it is heading towards emeryville. major delays with bart on strike. some 400,000 riders looking for

there is a lock on the gate. and no one is getting in on out of that station. let's talk about the economic issues. bart workers' contract ran out last night. they are asking for roughly an 8% raise over the next 3 years. bart had offered a 1% raise. 2% over four years. the 24% raise that workers wanted they knocked it down but it's a large increase. bart says they haven't gotten raises in five years. so that's the reason for the strike on economic issues. there's talk about safety issues after bart agents have been beat up and robbed in some of their stations. the station agents want more protection. but at the
