5:00 am
good morning, and welcome to "mosiac"." >> i am vickie evans. i am the respect life coordinator of the ark die diocesan of public concerns. this is one of my coworkers in the vineyard. who is the arch diocesan interim director in the office of worship. lauraen an i have worked together on many, many projects. it is a great pleasure to have you here. >> it nice to be here as well, thank you, vicki. >> you have some duties at the cathedral. >> yes, i do great things over
5:01 am
will. i am a parishioner. that's my home. >> working in the archdiocese in the office of worship. you have a unique perspective on what goes on particularly during this year of faith which is the topic for today. so the year of faith started last october 11th and continue until november 24th. >> yes. >> so, laura, tell us. what is the year of faith and why are we having one? >> year of faith was declared by benedict xvi when he was still pope. he gave us a year advance notice in order to declare a sense of return to christ. what he wanted to do was declare a year. catholics particularly. and also christians in general would dedicate themselves in looking at the baptism and seeing what that meant to him and renewing their relationship with christ, we try to
5:02 am
evangelize to others who are not christians but we don't to ourselves. so we will have an entire year learning our own faith. studying the catechism and learning what the faith is all about. he timed it. october 11, 2012. that was the 50th anniversary of vatican ii which so many know and how many affects that had on the church. it coincided with the catholic catechism. we have had 50 years since vatican ii. let's study the faith and get the cats kim off the shelf and read it to each other. remember why we are catholic. read some scripture. it is a great time to just put aside and it is not the first time we have had a year of faith. there was one in 1967 which is the 1900 anniversary of the
5:03 am
deaths of saints peter appall. and he was copying that idea. it is not a bad idea to take a year apart and look at our faith. and we have had a year of priests and june lee year, why don't we focus on ourselves and what we learn. that could be done individually. in the home, in the parrish and the worldwide church. this is a worldwide celebration. >> absolutely. meant to be celebrated everywhere and in different levels. worldwide, there is lots and lots of discussions and speeches and both pope benedict and now pope francis have discussed it in homilies. and on the archdiocese events, parrishs are doing a wonderful job and special prayer groups, that sort of thing and we encourage it in the home. >> wow. >> sounds like it is going to be a really good year. and bear a lot of fruit for the
5:04 am
5:06 am
. welcome back to "mosaic," i am vickie evans, your host. and i am in the office of public policy is and special concerns. our guest is lore rah britoni. who is a fellow worker at the archdiocese. and she is the interim director in the office of worship. so we spent the first segment talking about the year of faith and what it is and why we are having it. now we will talk about what is going on in our own archdiocese
5:07 am
to celebrate the year of faith. laura, what are our parrishs and schools doing? >> they have taken it and run with it. which is fantastic. >> they are doing special lecture series. special prayer groups. to include the petitions in the daily and weekly masses. they are focus touchdown on the catechism and putting extra emphasis into it as the pope has called for. on the arch diocesan level, and on october 24th, the week before we installed the bishop. so we were all pretty exhausted and weren't ready to launch into a new project. >> they took it and ran with it. which is fantastic and the focus again is on the focus of year of faith. renewing your relationship with christ. and renewing the call that baptism opened up for all of
5:08 am
us. and studying what the faith is about. it is amazing how the catholics are ignorant about the faith. and it is focusing on your own faith. we are now recovered. and we are ready to start launching again, there is a lot it is called for. and it is called the bishop of the place can elect for his area. >> one of those are the pilgrimage sites. there will be four pill grammage sites. and one in san mateo. and two in san francisco. and where people can go and there are special flairs there. it is set aside area for them to read about this. it is not a big deal. something someone can do. and they could make a special out of it and go up to this place and oh, i am in san mateo, i will go to saint matthews. and stop and say a prayer. very simple. >> what other locations.
5:09 am
saint matthews, you said. saint rafael and the cathedral in san francisco and mission delores which is the first church of san francisco. it is just a place for people to pray. not a big deal. you can go and spend all day. these are four gorgeous churches where people haven't been. if you want to go to all four, that would be great. if one day you could do it and great little goal to have. >> and the chance for prayer and say what is unique about the parrish and my faith and learn about the parrish and the archdiocese. >> the other thing they have done. we have determined a date, one date a month in which people can go and say special mass for the year of faith. that means if they go to mass on that day in their parish church. it doesn't have to be one of those sites. they can engage in indulgence. that is just something in the
5:10 am
year of faith you can orgeat. we have encouragement. we have a website up. and get people to study the catechism. it is on line. and it is easy to get. >> you don't have to buy it. and it is an idea of making a focus and saying. what am i going to do special today or this week. >> i will give it a try. we don't want to make it burden some. but we want to make sure they have the chance. >> you mentioned the website. it has a wealth of material on it, as you said. besides just the year of faith and the catechism, there are all sorts of things and you will see it on the screen now. it is www.ffarchdiocese.org. on the website there is a special tab. it directs you to. i think it is a worldwide. >> conference of catholic ships. and excellent resources.
5:11 am
everything from the pope's speech is where he proclaimed the year of faith to resources, ideas. suggestions. >> it is great. all sorts of prayers. what ever you want. you will find it there. >> the pictures are really pretty, too. we are getting ready for another break. when i come back i want to go back and discuss indulgences. >> maybe you can tell us a little bit more about indulgences. >> that is something we never get tired of hearing about. >> because they get us. right. so we will talk about that when we come back. thanks.
5:14 am
. welcome back to mosaic. this is the interim director in the office of worship. i am vickie evans, the of office coordinator and head of public social concerns. we are talking about the year of faith. laura has walked us through and what it is. and the reasons. and the fact that there are some indulgences attached to the year of faith. >> laura, you are going to tell us about that now. indulgences are a very important and misunderstood topic. >> in many ways, they hear indulgences. and they think it as four letter word and do we still do that. first thing is they think of is martin luther nailing his thesis to the door and one of his top complaints is what we refer to is the selling of
5:15 am
indulgences. and technically it wasn't the selling of indulgences. and people could donate money to get an indulgences. what is a indulgence is, it is the ability, i don't want to use theological terms. but the ability to wipe away the punishment of sin. what we talk about is when we have sin, we have the guilt which is the breaking of the relationship between ourselves and the church and ourselves and god t and the punishment as a result of that sin. woo can go to confession at any time when we are properly disposed to remove the guilt and be reconciled to god. but we can't remove the punishment unless we he do ex trackivity. >> what the church has come up with is indulgences. it has been around for hundreds and hundreds of years as a way for people to make represent par ration. >> you can -- residents epara -- reparation and for
5:16 am
someone who is in purgatory, as a way to get into heaven. this is a way we ask people to a special act. you can get indulgences by many different acts by praying the rosary, reading scripture. going to mass on a certain day. >> it is like the year of faith. he gives special plenary indulgences. like all punishment is wiped out for all sin. you can't go forward. >> you can't do it, it is all in the past. >> yes. but you can wipe out everything. that is part of the punishment. the way you can do that. there is four different ways. >> they are very simple ways. >> go to some lectures. >> go to some lectures on vatican ii. and the pilgrim churches. and in it saint rafael.
5:17 am
and to go to it mass on the days designated by the archbishop. and the other is to visit the place. if it anyone was if bullpen advertised in the bay area. they can go where they are ban it advertised. >> sorry. back to cleveland. >> i was baptized at saint bartholomew. >> you don't just are do that. >> you also need to pry for the intentions of the pope. you need to go to holy communion within a reasonable amount of time. and you to need he to go to confession. and get rid of the guilt side of that sin. >> it is a wonderful way of why do i sin? what does it mean? what does it mean to be separated from the church? the most important part. >> like confession, that you are exposed and you want to repent. you honestly realized you caused some sort of problem and to be good in the future and not do it again.
5:18 am
>> it is not just kick the box. >> that's the problem in the past. >> i can make a big donation to the church and that will get me out. >> that's what people were doing t and having every intention of continuing to sip. and not going to mass. >> i am out of purgatory. it is not a get out of veil for free it card. >> people have to be disposed of it. >> think of sin. what does it mean in our church. >> the popes discussed it quite a bit. we are in a sinful world. >> it is the veeiation tough god and we are attached to material things. >> just like any relationship where we fight or with a mother, brother, sister, husband. >> i have issues and i hurt my relationship with god. and therefore, i need to reconcile that relationship. so the church gives you methods to do that. >> beautifully put. that puts it in perspective about what an indulgence is.
5:19 am
>> if someone would like to buy one. send me a check. >> no, no, please. >> we will get you kicked out of this. >> if they want to know more about them, it talks about the year of faith. and how wonderful and discussions of what they have they are. >> so, they are out there. and again wonderful description of the indulgences in the catechism and if you pulled it out and go on line. it talks about indulgences and talks again of the importance of penance. and match on reconciliation or confession as they call it. >> it is our tenants. and what it others. >> learning about the faith. studying vatican ii. and all those things. >> it is just awry fuel of the baptism. >> that is how the pope started the declaration. he said baptism opens the door to faith. we can't walk in and peek in. and say, okay.
5:20 am
i am a catholic or i am a christian. we need to step into the room and embrace it and study it. >> and it is easy for us to go to ccd. >> you went to a catholic school. and then you were confirmed. and you never took a religious class in your life. and haven't picked up the catechism in 20 years or so. >> it is a good opportunity to do so. >> it is on the website at www ffdiocese.org. >> thank you you for our faith in general. and i hope this is a point where everyone will want to take advantage of the last few months. >> absolutely.
5:23 am
plan. i am vickie evans your hope from the office of public policy and social concerns. and laura, there is another subject i wanted to touch on. our new archbishop. >> he will be elevated from bishop to arch bush shop on june -- archbishop on june 20th. for the feast of st. peter and paul. you want to tell the viewing audience and what that means. >> he was the archbishop last july. it was announced as soon as he
5:24 am
took over the archdiocese of san francisco. every archbishop who is declared, needs to make a kind of their own pilgrimage and they go to rome. you said on june 29th. it is always on june 29th. on the fees of peter and paul. >> it is only worn by the archbishop. >> they he get a new one. and it is a piece of white cloth that goes around their next and has a lapette and it has jewels on it. it is the sign of being the archbishop. >> the pope wears one. because he is technically the archbishop of rome. and it is a unique ceremony. special wool that is used and raised especially for this purpose. it is rook old home week. and any of the archbishops. they come to rome with pilgrims and they have over 100 going. and it is a great year of
5:25 am
celebration. and very large mass. and this is placed over his head and he gets to wear it whenever he is in the archdiocese. and wearing that. it is a special honor. and mark that shows up. this is something special. because he is what is called a metropolitan. and this is a time of feasting and joy and we believe they are successors of peter. the pope, being the prime bishop and all the other bishops. they have symbolism and all sorts of fun hats. and they think the stick, they have and all the things. one part of symbolism that the bishops have. >> that's right. >> it is tradition. >> that's right. >> reminds you catholic faith has been around for over 200 years. and the program he is greatly supporting right around foul is the call to prayer. >> absolutely. the call to prayer is uniquely
5:26 am
for the united states. this is not worldwide prayer. but it falls in there as a call to prayer among the united states and the people and the focus is on family, marriage and youth. and the idea is really we need to focus on those things in the united states. we have particular challenges in the u.s. on those things. and so, we need to prayer. it there is in the title. call to pray. >> so we he ask that people use special petitions in their services and educate themselves. we have a holy hour. most parishes and certainly at the cathedral where they can come and pray before the blessed sacrament. for the call to prayer. for a call for us to pray and oakland. consequently. that tie insist and works with this night of freedom. which the catholic church celebrates. that starts in late june. >> this is the second one. >> yes. >> it as annual event. last year being a presidential
5:27 am
it election, this was a big deal. >> we he focused again and what does it mean to be a catholic in the democratic society and how does it influence my voting. >> should i pray about what i hope for. and what petitions i vote tore. remember, you are catholic and it is not shy about saying. this is what the catholic church believes and what we teach and we hope all catholics would follow that. >> don't just follow it blindly. why do we he believe that. and why does the scripture base believe in these things and jet with your heart. >> encompass prayer about life, marriage. religious freedom. very important this year. >> things that really challenge us in the united states. both for good. the freedom of religion which show few people do. and we need to celebrate that. and honor it. but it has influences in other ways, too. >> it wraps up what we are
5:28 am
doing this year. >> good year. >> yes. between our archdioceses in rome and the year of faith. the call to prayer and the night of freedom. keep praying. can't go wrong. laura bertoni. thank you for being with us. we will see you next week on mow he sayic, -- mow he say i can -- "mosaic." i am vickie evans.
5:30 am
