the asiana flight crashed as it tried to land on saturday. cnn aired this video of the plane hitting the runway. a spokeswoman for the airlines says the pilot at the control had only 43 hours' experience flying a 777 boeing and the ntsb says it was flying too low and 20 knots lower than its landing speed. 357 were on board but only two were killed. melanie woodrow is there this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. ntsb made a critical discovery during the final seconds of this flight. it's helping them determine what may have caused the crash. investigators from the national transportation safety board combed through the wreck raj of the asiana flight. they say the tail was coming in too low when it hit the rocky seawall of the runway.

an analysis of the flight data recorder shows the pilot tried to speed up, but it was too late. >> they called to initiate a go-around occurred 1.5 seconds before impact. >> reporter: investigators hope to interview the crew and victims over the next couple of days. airline officials say the pilot in control of the aircraft was a veteran with nearly 10,000 hours of flying experience, but he was new to the boeing 777 and was landing the aircraft at san francisco's international airport for the first time. 16-year-olds ye mengyuan and wang linjia were flying in from a small town and were classmates heading to summer camp. they're looking into the possibility that an emergency vehicle rushing to the scene may have hit one of the girls and killed her. 182 passengers were taken to the hospital. doctors expected to see burn

victims, but that's not what they got. >> what we are seeing are a huge amount of spine fractures, some of which include paralysis. >> reporter: most of the back of the plane. the injured passengers were taken to five different medical centers. remarkably a third of the passengers did not require hospitalization. anne-marie? >> melanie woodrow in burlingame. thank you, melanie. well, earlier i spoke with former chairman and cbs analyst mark rosenker. he says officials have been discovering things every day. >> they found particularly interesting conversations between the two crew members and when the callout was to try to actually add more throttle, recognizing that they were coming in too low, too slow. they ultimately made the decision to try to go around, but it was too late at that point. the flight data recorder is

beginning to corroborate that type of activity in the cockpit and the operations of the aircraft. so they're learning every day. they have actually made remarkable progress, when you think they've only really been there for less than day and a half how much they've understood, how much they've learned. >> he said the final results could take up to a year and a half. and a plane crashed at a small airport in alaska killing all ten people on board. it happened on sunday in soldotna, which is about 75 miles southwest of anchorage. officials say the aircraft was taking off when it crashed and burst into flames. firefighters were initially kept back by the flames. the weather was cloudy with a light wind. the ntsb will investigate. a runaway oil tanker derailed in canada devastating a small town in quebec near the border of maine. 70 cars headed downhill and

exploded one by one. at least five people are dead and another 40 are dead. about 2,000 people were forced to evacuate. 30 buildings were completely destroyed. officials believe the death toll could be higher. >> investigators are still at the part of the scene that we can go on. of course, it's a small part because there are still firefighters going on the scene trying to exten give everything that is going on over there. >> the coroner says it may not be possible to recover some of the bodies because of the intensity of the blast. and the defense department furloughs begin this week. they're part of the federal budget cuts that will affect about 680,000 civilian workers around the world. they're being forced to take an unpaid day each week for the next 11 weeks until the end of september. the department estimates the furlough will save about $2 billion, but as wyatt andrew reports, the workers will receive a 20% pay cut.

>> reporter: the furloughs will impact operations at every american military base around the world except for some bases supporting combat. >> it's been really tough on a lot of people. >> reporter: maureen campbell who works on the staff of a navy admiral says the furlough amounts to a 20% pay cut for thousands of workers who can't afford it. >> for them a 20% cut is a lot more money and means a lot more to them in terms of, you know, making those day-to-day payments. >> reporter: defense secretary chuck hagel says that to meet the budget goals of sequestration, he had to reduce the furlough payroll or reduce the military. >> we've already cut into readiness. you know we're standing down 16 air force squadrons. we're not sailing a lot of ships. no new training in the army. >> reporter: there are notable exceptions. for example, military commissaries will close an extra

day a week but not military dare carries. so are the civilian workers at tinker air force base in oakland, oklahoma, whose homes were destroyed by the f-5 tornado in may. all of those lost wages will harm the local economy. communities' larges military bases will lose tens of millions of dollars. wyatt andrews, cbs news, washington. the wife of secretary of state john kerry is in the hospital this morning. 74-year-old teresa heinz kerry was rushed to the emergency room on nantucket island on sunday. hospital officials say she was in critical condition but has been stabilized. she's been transferred to massachusetts general in boston and there are no details about her illness. a memorial service will be held tomorrow for the 19 hotshot firefighters killed last week battling a massive wildfire. in arizona. on sunday thousands watched as

america's weak relationship with egypt. >> it was a coup and it was the second time in 2 1/2 years that we have seen the military step in. we urged the military not to do that. >> reporter: anti-morsi demonstrators maintain they are part of a revolution. this woman said we are coming out to say this is not a military coup. this is a public will. the people brought down the regime. earlier sunday morsi opponents in tahrir square waved flags and cheered as military warplanes flew overhead. they blame the military president who was in office for more than a year on the economy and the brother's increased power. they have also turned their attention to the u.s. government who they blame for supporting morsi's rule. adriana diaz, cbs news. in see ya the president of the coalition is offering a partial truce in the civil war in that country. it would apply only to the besieged city of homs where

well, the finally south pacific island of american samoa has the world's worst obesity rate. the president has started a program aimed at getting young people to slim down. >> reporter: this is the front line in american samoa's battle against obesity, an early morning exercise class at the island's only stadium. olivia comes here twice a week. >> i needed to get healthier. i had high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol. >> reporter: 75% of samoans with obese which is why the woman teaches this class. a nurse, she says almost all of her patients suffer from the effects of being so overweight. >> diabetes, hypertension,
