zimmerman could still face federal charges or lawsuit in the killing of trayvon martin. susan mcginnis reports. >> reporter: people protesting george zimmerman's acquittal demonstrated into the night around the country. in new york people blocked traffic as they marched through times square. in los angeles demonstrators ran out onto i-10, stopping cars on the freeway until police moved in. but most of the rallies from the east coast to the west coast were peaceful sunday. >> we want something to come out of this because right now we feel empty handed. >> not guilty. >> reporter: a jury found the neighborhood watchman not guilty in the shooting death of trayvon martin. one day after the verdict, many who live here in sanford were trying to move on. >> justice is served. it's over. he went to court. they proved him not guilty. >> reporter: zimmerman is a free

man, but zimmerman ice lawyers say he's still on edge. >> they have said in tweets and everything else they want revenge. >> reporter: the justice department has an open investigation into the case. the ncaap wants the prosecutors to file civil rights charges against zimmerman. martin's family is still processing the jury's decision. >> very disappointed at this point, but we know in the end god will prevail, and he will -- justice will be served. >> reporter: church services honoring martin also took place across the country. at some, worshippers parade in hoodies, similar to the one the 17-year-old wore the night he died. susan mcginnis, cbs news, sanford, florida. >> earlier i asked criminal defense attorney paul batista if he expects zimmerman will face another trial in federal court. >> in theory the u.s. justice department can indict george zimmerman for criminal civil rights violations in theory and,

in fact, we have seen press releases where the justice department is reminding the public that it has an open investigation. i've been around for a long time unfortunately and i have seen, for example, the rodney king case where the police were acquitted by a local jury in los angeles. that was followed by a federal criminal indictment, and that case kind of ended in the ground. it didn't really get anywhere. my guess is we will not see a federal criminal indictment of george zimmerman. among other things, he is not a public official. he may be a wannabe cop, but he's not a cop. >> right. so even though a lot of -- a lot of controversy surrounding this case and a politically charged case, you're saying it's unlikely we'll see anything from the feds. >> i'm thinking like a lawyer. i know how a prosecutor

evaluates a case. it will not bring a case it thinks it will lose. >> but you imagine there'll be a civil case that follows. >> that's different species. that's by the family. we saw the family of ron goldman won that case. they got a $25 million verdict on which they have not collected one dime. george zimmerman has no money. >> that was criminal defense attorney paul batista. the senate goes back to work this morning facing a showdown over its own rules. dem kranlt democrats want to lower barriers for presidential appointees. republicans say the effort is a slap in the face to senate prediction. as jeff pegues records it's getting rough. >> just last thursday the gloves came off between senate majority leader harry reid and minority leader mitch mcconnell. >> if anyone thinks since the first of the year the norms have been followed by them, they're living in gaga land. >> if we don't pull back from the brink here, my friend the majority leader is going to be remembered as the worst leader

of the senate ever. >> reporter: senator reid downplayed the impact of his proposed changes. >> listen. i want everyone to hear this. the changes we're making are very, very minimal. >> reporter: but reid's plan would involve a historic shift, changing the number needed to approve a nomination. democrats want to approve names submitted by president obama including nominees to the labor department and consumer financial protection bureau. currently 67 votes are needed to change the rule. reid wants to change that number to a simple majority. 51. senator mcconnell calls the move the nuclear option. >> we have never changed the rules of the senate by breaking the rules of the senate in order to diminish the voices of individual senators. >> reporter: it could backfire on democrats if republicans regain control of the senate in next year's election. congressional expert norm ornstein.

>> they've got many more of their own members up in 2014 in republican and if the senate turns worse and people start to blame incumbents, are they going to blame the republicans for obstruction or are they going to say a pox on both of your houses. >> reporter: monday all 100 senators have been summoned to a rare closed door meeting in hopes of defusing the sense. jeff pegues, cbs news, capitol hill. the prosecution in the bradley manning trial is going back to work. the pfc is accused of stealing military secrets and giving them to wikileaks. they rested last week. prosecutors say rebuttal witnesses will testify this morning. one of edward snowden's contacts says the former national security agency analyst has documents that shows exactly how the nsa works, but the contact says snowden is not going to reveal that information. snowden said on friday he's asking russia for temporary asylum while he searches for a permanent home. deputy secretary of state

william byrnes is in egypt. to meet with the country's new leaders. he's the highest ranking u.s. official since the military ousted president mohamed morsi. there's still ongoing violence aimed at the new government. attackers this morning blew up a bus full of factory workers. three people were killed. nelson mandela could come out of the hospital soon. mandela was hospitalized more than a month ago. he's been on life support and is still reported in crill cal but stable condition. mandela's 95th birthday is this thursday. on the "cbs moneywatch" a former goldman sachs trader faces a jury, and warren buffett teaches a class. ashley morrison is here in new york with that and more. good morning, ashley. >> good morning to you, alexis. asian stocks were mixed after a slowdown in china.

hong kong's hang sang added a fraction while tokyo's nikkei is closed. retail sales and business inventories are also due out today. the dow is up 328 points last week while the nasdaq gained 120 points. a civil trial begins in new york here today for a former goldman sachs trader accused by the securities and exchange commission of cheating investors on mortgage backed securities. lawyers say their client did nothing wrong. three years ago goldman sachs paid more than half a billion charges to settle charges against it. well, this will be a crucial week for dell. shareholders on thursday will vote on a proposal to make the company private. dell revolutionized the personal computer business, but it has been struggling recently as consumers switch to smartphones and tablets. starting today you can learn how to give away money like warren buffett from warren buffett. buffett, one of the world's richest people is gradually

fireworks lit up the sky near fireworks lit up the sky near the eiffel tower in paris last night. the city was celebrating bastille day, the national holiday that marked the beginning of the french revolution and the end of the french monarchy. sectarian violence between catholics and protestants rocked belfast and other parts of northern ireland for a third consecutive night. hijackers set it on fire. gasoline bombs were thrown on cars. more than three dozen people were injured, most of them police officers, since the unrest began on friday. police in vancouver are trying to determine how canadian actor cory monteith died. monteith was one of the stars of the tv show "glee." he was found dead in his hotel room on saturday. wendy gillette reports. >> reporter: cory monteith became a breakout star known as

fin hudson, about a high school glee club in a small town of monmouth, ohio. on the show he had an off-and-on again romance with a character played by lea michele. the two mimicked their story line becoming a couple off screen. he was scheduled to leave the hotel saturday, but when he didn't check out, hotel staff entered the 21st floor room shortly after noon and found him dead. the 31-year-old canadian actor talked openly about his drugs. he went to rehab when he was 19 and then again in april. police say their investigation shows other people were in the room friday night but monteith returned alone early saturday. >> the coroner will be determined next steps with respect to establishing cause of death, but all indications are that there was no foul play. >> reporter: fox news television and the producers of the show

trophy, but he also gets the check for $828,000. the biggest name in american sprinting has tested positive for doping. tyson gay holds the u.s. record for the 100-meter sprint. gay says he put his faith in someone and was let down. he faces a two-year ban. in baseball the all-star home run derby is tonight, and taking a shot at the title will be baltimore's chris davis. on sunday against the blue days he launched one deep to left. davis is now tied with reggie jackson for 37 home runs before the all-star break. baltimore beats toronto, 7-4. the tigers' justin verlander almost had a no-hitter against the rangers. he struck out three. but mitch moreland broke up his bid in the seventh with a double to right. detroit beats texas, ties zip. and the cardinals head into the all-star break with the best record in baseball. yadier molina helped st. louis beat the cubs, 10-6. molina has the best average in the national league, batting .341.

a 6-year-old boy is in critical condition this morning after being buried alive for more than three hours in indiana. the scene was tragic as rescuers tried to dig him out. on friday nathan woessner was playing at indiana dunes national lakeshore, which is about 20 miles east of gary. he fell into a hole and when his family and friends tried to rescue him, the entire dune collapsed. >> my friend, he got stuck in a sand dune and he's understood the sand dune. they can't get him out. >> firefighters say nathan survived because he was caught in an air pocket and is expected to make a full recovery. a bloody end to the final running of the bulls in pamplona, spain. officials say a 23-year-old woman from australia is in grave condition after being gored in the back yesterday. four other runners were hospitalized with cuts and bruises. harry potter author j.k.
