you just saw a film clip from the opening night film at the 33rd annual jewish festival. welcome to mosaic. we're joined by lex can i and jay and jay, why don't you tell us a little bit about the zigzag kit. >> well, it's based on a david novel who is a great author, and it so stars isabel in a great roll. it's directed by vincent and we will have him here and it's playing at the castro july 25th. >> and for those that may not know isabel is his daughter?

[ laughter ]. i am getting them confused. thank you. >> it's a really wonderful film. >> lexi, what are the themes this year for the festival? >> well we have it called life through a jewish lens. you can be jewish and not be jewish. 30 percent of the audience is not jewish but may enjoy eating some things. our jewish audiences are diverse. many are bilingual and it creates bridges within the bay area. this year we have 74 films from

17 different countries from around the world. you can imagine the diversity represented there. >> you're expanding your venues and festivals at large. >> yeah, we have a 30 percent increase and we're also in nine bay area venues including some venues in the east bay and we will be there in downtown burkely and there's really close and it's a bigger venue and theater as well. we will be in the grand lakes theater for people in oakland and we will have the organist on saturday night and come on down to the grand lake. we will be showing it at the new parkway theater and that's a pizza pub and brewery so you can eat and drink at the same

time. we will be showing a film there and it's during oakland art maremme and that's the big gallery walk in oakland. >> fantastic. this year what are the sub themes that you have? >> well one of the things that we're doing is focusing on the icons. very familiar people all of us so the trials of mohammed ali is a good example. it's about during the period of time that he became an an sister to the water and then we have a spotlight on new york. we have many films that are about new york and films about art and then a film about the

cartoonist of the new yorker. we're focuses on television more of this year. we're doing a tv spotlight and we're focusing on poplar television shows in the u.s. and beyond. >> fantastic. we're going to see another clip of afternoon delight. why don't you set that up for us. >> okay. this is one of our big films and it's on august 3rd and this is an incredible come di for those people that want to laugh. this is jill's first director cereal preview. it premiered at sun dance and won for best director. jill that you may know from the hit series on hbo six feet underrer. she was a writer on that film. this was about a type woman in silver lake who is questioning

the special nights are this year. >> sure. we have the centerpiece film and it's a really amazing film and it's called an attack. it's about a doctor whose wife is suspected of being a suicide bomber. you can imagine how that would be. we're having the director here and he will be here in person and that is on tuesday night of the castro run and our closing night film is called rue mandar. this is about a jewish family in paris dealing with an apartment that's left to them after their mother dies. it's a tragedy come di combination. it's our closing night film on

thursday august 1s, and then year the freedom of expression is the film maker allen. he has made many films and several of them that's at the festival as well and nobody's business and stranger and we're premiering the brand new film called first cuss sin once removed and allen will be here to expect it on stage. >> we have a clip of first cousin. >> allen is a good film maker and you will see that in the clip. it's about his first cousin that's a poet and a professor at brown university and also a mentor to allen, and allen visits him in the last years of

film festival, how do you make your choices? >> well this year we were interested to highlight some new film makers and so we're having a spotlight this year on alex. have you ever watched the hbo series girl's? >> yes. >> he plays ray and he is an independent film maker and so we're showing red flag and that's a new film and there's an on stage conversation with him on saturday night. we really wanted to highlight new emerging film makers. we're also interested in doing programming that includes music and other kinds of performances, we're showing an amazing documentary amy and the day that she came to tingle and it features a performance with

amy wine house before we became a big star. it's about 60 people there and an interview with her about the influences from the african american jazz and blues world. we will be featuring it with with a live concert of the front woman of the mickey heart band. she will be doing her on music with amy wine house covers. >> fantastic. we're going to go to a quick break but before we do, we're going to go out to a joy pat film. do you want to set that up? >> yeah, joe was jewish and grew up in new york. he was in the communist party and making theater free to all new yorkers free. this is a great clip featuring many of the great people who he influenced. there are other people in the film and many of the people

welcome back to mosaic and we're in the middle of a wonderful conversation and looking at clips for the jewish festival. we're with jay and lexi and the film festival is always inviting. what is new this year? >> well some of the best work currently is being done on television. we're having a spotlight on tv and one of the highlight programs that where where he will focus on tv. we will have giddy and ralph who is the director of prisoners of war talking about

the serie which was the stuff for homeland. he is also an executive producer of homeland. we will be showing clips of homeland and prisoners of war and they will talk about how it was adapted and then the pilot of the prisoners of water series. >> should we go to that clip and take a look? >> sure. >> a few airplanes carrying the prisoners of water has landed. the prime minister is on the way to meet them and then they will be with their families. i ask that you respect their privacy within the following days and weeks. >> thank you very much.

the range and diversity of the film festival is such a mixture of different perspectives on life. i am just wondering how over the years that you understand it as a gatterring place. a place of celebration, a place of education and a place that really causing people to think through important issues and then identity building and how do you understand the power of film in that way? >> well, there's nothing like being in that space with all of those people on opening night and then 1500 people in the theater and many of whom look at the festival as their high holidays of the year.

many people bring a cushion and their lunches and just sit through the duration. they buy passes and see programs over 19 days, and i think that a lot of audiences see this as the place that really feeds their education and entertainment and also pride building around the jewish identity. also people that are film lovers and film goers in san francisco who enjoy what they have to offer and then the strong quality of programming that we provide at the jewish film festival. >> so layered and complex. what a gift to the community. we will be back in just one memo moment here on mosaic. ♪ [ music ]♪

number is (415)621-0523. >> wonderful. what are some of the year round programs that you have going on? >> yeah, so actually the jewish film festival is a media arts festival and you put on many programs and we're going to be continuing the spot lot at the san francisco community center in the fall and will be showing other series there in the fall. we have a new film maker residency that people can apply for on line and that gives office space and services in a film maker dealing with scenes. >> we have one more clip that we wanted to set up today. >> we're trying to do more children and family programs. we're doing a sing along annie. we're showing the american tale and that's an animated film about the youish mice and then
