good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, this morning, it is not clear why the landing gear of a southwest airlines jet collapsed as it landed at new york's laguardia airport. the front landing gear collapsed in southwest flight 345 from nashville touched down early yesterday evening. ten passengers were injured, none of them seriously, but most agreed there were some tense moments. >> the worst part was when the doors weren't being opened and the smoke was coming in. you just didn't know how long that was going to take. clearly, they wanted to wait for their rescue teams to come to see if there was fire. that was the anxious moment when people were about to lose it. >> one passenger said the flight was delayed following an announcement about a tire problem. jerika duncan has more. >> reporter: southwest flight was nose down on new york's laguardia airport. the faa said the landing gear of

the boeing 737 collapsed shortly after the plane touched down. >> the nose wheel collapsed and immediately port authority, police department, aircraft rescue and firefighting crews and our mutual aid partners responded immediately. >> reporter: witnesses described what they saw when the plane went down. >> when he got over grand central parkway, that's when he started -- he went nose down. >> it landed on its nose and started skidding. the flames came out and it got on fire but it was only the front. >> reporter: emergency crews surrounded the plane and used the side chute to evacuate the 150 people on board. airport officials say ten people were treated on the scene and six were taken to the hospital. the flight crew has also been hospitalized for observation. the airport closed to incoming and outgoing flights after the rough landing. but one of two runways was open after 7:00 p.m. airport officials are now working to move the craft off the runway and hope to have everything open sometime tuesday. >> we're still assessing the

damage on the runway and the aircraft still has to be cleared from the run away safety area. >> reporter: the faa is investigating. jerika duncan, for cbs news, queens, new york. well, the newest member of the royal family could make his first appearance today. the birth of a son to will and kate set off nationwide celebrations. all three spent the night at the hospital. alphonso van marsh is outside st. mary's hospital. alphonso, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, it is a good morning, anne-marie, especially if you're in the newspaper business because virtually every paper is featuring the duke and duchess of cambridge, otherwise known as the new parents to the third in line to the throne. and there's a message here from a lot of these papers saying to the prince "welcome to the world." the vigil continues outside this london hospital as millions eagerly awaits the first glimpse of the newest member of the royal family. >> it's like a party.

>> reporter: the party outside buckingham palace lasted into the early morning hours as britain celebrated the first son for william and kate, the duke and duchess of cambridge. >> two people in love. two people in love having a baby. >> reporter: his royal highness whose name is to be announced later is the prince of cambridge. he was born at 4:24 local time and weighed in at 8 pounds and 6 ounces. >> god save the queen! >> reporter: the town crier was the first to announce the birth. he wasn't surprised to find out it was a boy. now that we know the sex of the baby, the only remaining mystery is his name. and it seems everyone in the world has a guess, but some names are more popular than others. >> i've got a feeling it's going to be george. i have a feeling -- it may not be, but that's my feeling. we haven't had a george for while, the queen's father was george and he was very popular.

>> reporter: george is popular. with gamblers in london as well. 3 to 1 odds james is right behind that followed by alexander, louis and henry. but no matter what name his parents give him, we do know one day it's likely he'll be called king. the king is third in line to the throne. of course, that is after his grandfather, prince charles and his father prince william. anne-marie. >> alphonso, before we go, you gave us a list of the top names,ed in idea what we will find out what the names that the parents pick? >> reporter: it's a little bit of mystery, according to tradition, the name isn't immediately announced. let's take, for example, when william was born, it was a week before we knew the name. and prince charles' name, well, it was a mystery for a month before it was known to the world. we'll just wait and see, anne-marie. >> a month, i don't think royal watchers can wait that long. alphonso van marsh, thank you. this is the second day of

pope francis' weak-long visit to brazil. it's the second trip since becoming pope. francis served as archbishop of buenos aires before his election. but the trip got off to a bumpy start. francis' driver made a wrong turn creating a nightmare for the security detail. adriana diaz reports. >> reporter: crowds cheered as the pope arrived in rio de janeiro. the argentinean pope is back in latin america to celebrate world youth day. >> this moment say very is special moment. just to open my heart with you, i broke out in tears. >> reporter: during his seven-day stay, the 76-year-old pontiff will meet with hundreds of thousands of catholics. on the flight from rome, pope francis told reporters that young people face more challenges after the financial crisis. that we are facing the risk of having a generation without jobs and personal dignity comes from work.

the brazilian president granted the pope at the airport. on the way from the airport, the pope rode in a small fiat, the driver reportedly took a wrong turn and got stuck in traffic. security guards tried to hold back the crowd, but the pontiff left his window open, touching those who reached in, even holding a baby. in a move that might rattle his security detail, pope francis decided to ride in an open vehicle leaving behind his bulletproof vehicle. but security is tight here, brazilian police found a small homemade explosive at the sanctuary which pope francis will visit later this week. it's unclear if the device is related to the pontiff's visit. the faithful have come from around the world. these pilgrims are from miami, they say this experience is special, not only because of their faith, but also their heritage. >> it's a feeling of knowing that he's latin. it's a feeling of knowing that there's so many latins here. >> reporter: pope francis plans a day of rest tuesday before visiting a tiny capital in the rio slums, once so dangerous, it

was known as the gaza strip. adriana diaz, cbs news. rio de janeiro, brazil. a key witness in the trial of whitey bulger testified that the alleged mob boss strangled a woman and then took a nap. one of bulger's associates stephen flemmi is expected to return for more cross-examination today. jim armstrong of our boston station wbz has details. >> i blacked out when they read my name. >> reporter: not two minutes into testimony of stephen "the rifleman" flemmi, and steve davis was on his feet screaming obscenities at him. in front of the gallery. >> i didn't mean to. i didn't want to disrespect judge. i wrote an apology. >> reporter: flemmi's ex-girlfriend, flemmi suggested steve davis was a drug dealer and informant. he then continued documenting murder after murder, including that of his own stepdaughter deborah huffy.

discovery in northern mexico, a well-preserved dinosaur tail. the 50-piece section of tail is about 15 feet long and they say it came from a duckbill dinosaur that was 36 feet long. the creature lived 72 million years ago. and they hope to find the rest of the dinosaur's body buried nearby. days after the acquittal of the death of trayvon martin, george zimmerman surfaced publicly for the spirit. florida police say zimmerman and another man pulled a couple and two kids out of an overturned vehicle last week. no one was hurt. mark o'mara, zimmerman's attorney, didn't know about the rescue until police contacted him. >> the timing was sort of unique, the idea that he was helping somebody out in trouble is the george zimmerman that i known about his whole life. >> the crash site is less than a mile away from where zimmerman fatally shot 17-year-old trayvon martin. on the "cbs moneywatch,"

apple earnings today, and taco bell scraps kids' meals. ashley morrison is here. asian markets got a boost as investors looked ahead to corporate earnings. tokyo's nikkei added nearly 1% while hong kong's hang seng gained more than 2%. apple posted its quarterly earnings after the market closes today. analysts expect the tech giant to make less money because people are buying lower-priced iphones and ipads. in the past ten months, apple's shares have dropped 40%. disappointing quarterly earnings from mcdonald's almost dragged down wall street monday. the dow inched up almost 2 points to close at a record high of 15,545. the nasdaq climbed 12 points. but netflix beat the streak and posted its earnings monday and revenue is up 20%. the online video service added 630,000 u.s. subscribers last quarter but analysts were

expecting closer to 800,000. shares dropped almost 4% in after hours trading. a big chain at taco bell the fast food chain said on monday. they are going to stop serving their kids meals and toys because they weren't boosting sales. they are the first national chain to do that. some franchises will take them off the menu this month but by january, no u.s. restaurants will serve them. and film director spike lee wants to bypass hollywood, so he's raising money on kick starter. he's launched an online campaign similar to veronica mars which brought in $6 million. the director of "do the right thing" won't say what his next feature film will be, only that it's about the addiction to blood. a cool perk, if you invest 10 grand, you get to sit courtside with lee at a knicks game. kind of cool.

miami. chicago will be partly sunny and sunny in dallas. los angeles, partly sunny with a high of 79. time now for a check of the national forecast. a cold front moves through parts of the midwest, bringing showers and thunderstorms. the threat of thunderstorms remains in the northeast. some areas could get torrential downpours and scattered showers and thunderstorms are also expected in the south and west. in sports, milwaukee brewers' star ryan braun said he accepts a suspension that will keep him off the field for the rest of the baseball season. the former mvp violated major league baseball's drug program. braun is reportedly linked to biogenes biogenesis, a miami anti-aging company accused of illegal drugs. that will cost him about $3 million. in 2012, braun successfully appealed a suspension after failing a drug test. >> as general manager, i'm somewhat happy that this is over

she's the first accuser to come forward publicly. filner denies the claim. and skipping breakfast could be a recipe for a heart attack. a new harvard study finds a 27% greater risk for heart attack for older men who won't east their breakfast. researchers aren't sure why. it may have to do with spikes in blood sugar later on in the day when the breakfast skippers ate a big meal. one of hollywood's tough guy actors has died. dennis farina is best known for his work in "law & order" but made a name for himself playing over-the-top mobsters. >> harry, i'm going to ask you one more time, then i got to shoot you you don't tell me what i want to know. where's my money? >> before he became an actor, farina spent 18 years as a chicago police officer. dennis farina died monday after suffering a blood clot in his lung. he was 69. coming up after your local news on "cbs this morning," comedian louis c.k.

a rare corpse flower drew a huge crowd at the u.s. botanic garden in washington. the flower is famous for its stench which smells like rotting flesh. the odor had dissipated after blooming sunday. the eight-foot flower weighs 250 pounds. well, life is filled with joyous moments so one writer set out to collect as many as he could. wyatt andrews tells us what he found. >> reporter: two weeks ago, richard deitsch, a writer for "sports illustrated" was on the social media site of twitter found this photo of brothers celebrating a championship in hockey. deitsch thought about it for a second and sent a tweet, asking his followers how many of you

have a photograph of the single best moment of your life. within minutes came a rush of best moments. parents' first moments with a newborn. the moment he asks and she says yes. the moment of homecoming from the dangers of war. dozens and then hundreds of photos streamed in what deitsch describes as a fountain of humanity. >> never in my wildest dreams could i have expected hundreds of people sending me these just incredible intimate moments. >> reporter: because you didn't think that people would share? >> i was surprised. i mean, one, it certainly felt like a gift. but, two, it felt like i was in possession of something pretty sacred. >> reporter: deitsch's favorite photographs capture what he calls success against the odds. athletes crossing the finish line, patients who have just beaten cancer. babies battling for life. in intensive care. john skinta of brooklyn sent this. his daughter leila had been born with an elevate the heart rate and this is the moment he learned she'd be fine. good moment? >> great moment.
