with a western edition of the broadcast. we begin tonight with a deadly escalation of violence in egypt. u.s. secretary of state john kerry said today the country is at a "pivotal moment." at least 72 people are dead there, according to the ministry of health. after troops opened fire on supporters of deposed president mohammed morsi. there are conflicting claims about exactly what happened. the government says troops only fired tear gas, not live bullets. but cbs news correspondent clarissa ward saw for herself the carnage in cairo. we caution you this report includes some graphic images. >> reporter: the clashes began in the very early morning and lasted for hours. amateur video shot by the protesters appeared to show meptian police and men in plain clothes firing shotguns and hurling rocks at the demonstrators. morsi supporter abdul rahman told us he saw the army and rlice firing much more lethal ak-47s directly at the crowd.

>> it's really heavy fire. >> reporter: egyptian security forces claim they only fired tear gas, but when we visited hee field hospital where the ndotesters took their dead and wounded, we found a very different story. we've counted 37 dead bodies in this room. doctors tell us that almost all of them have bullet wounds to the head, neck, and heart. dr. jaber al mursi told us the clinic was overwhelmed. >> reporter: so you do not have epough blood? you do not have enough materials uo help these people? >> no, no, no. >> neporter: as word of the killing spread, people tried to edght their way into the improvised morgue, hoping they wouldn't find their loved ones find th but throughout the morning, many

had to face a terrible truth. volunteers overwhelmed by the sheer number of the dead, could only allow the relatives a moment to grieve. this man, mohammed, told us he lost his brother. lost his face," he said. "he's just 20 years old." we asked, "who was responsible?" artillery, and missiles through center pyongyang. ehough these pictures were taken today, it was reminiscent of ar-e war-era soviet parades. .armer c.i.a. analyst bob carlin has made nearly 30 trips to north korea. to i think it's intended to be a sober message that they have the capacity to inflict a lot of damage if we're not very careful. >> reporter: the korean war is theled the fatherland liberation ion here, and while much of the world considers that it ended in a stalemate, the north koreans claimed victory. they see it as successfully fighting back u.s. imperialists. in some way, that's a battle they continue to fight today. supreme leader kim jong un links his country's self-sufficiency th t the continued development rogrts nuclear program. troops cocked their heads toward he as they passed by his reviewing stand today. >> kim jong un has moved quickly

to try to establish himself as a wader who is concerned about the well-being of his people. atd so he has shown up at a lot of projects that make people's lives a little bit better. >> reporter: the sea of colored pom-poms raised overhead filled raisl-sung square and magnified magnifgeantry. even standing in the middle of this, it's hard to give you a thee for just the sheer size, hhe scale of the celebration. wese people with their pom-poms are yelling, "long live kim jong un." it is hot, humid. most of them are wearing suits and ties and long dresses. it's difficult to describe the enthusiasm. and it can be difficult to explain, too, as much of this country is mired in problems. the food shortages and economic worries here are hardly paraded out for all to see.

watc korea watchers tell us that kim jong un has been focusing more of his attention on matters of the economy. he's been seen at factories, dustt industry, hospitals, trying to focus his country's s tention on economic development. jim. >> axelrod: seth doane in pmongyang, north korea. a.ank you. three people were killed in a bus accident in indianapolis this afternoon. a packed bus carrying teenagers urom a church camp overturned on interstate 464, trapping inssengers inside. more than a dozen others were hurt, at least two of them critically. police south florida are trying to piece together why a man opened fire at an apartment complex, killing six. it happened overnight in hialeah, a suburb of miami. police say the gunman, identified as pedro vargas, set apartment he shared with his vawrgs on fire before beginning his shooting rampage. hi went on to kill six people

wd possibly boost wages. this will be the president's attempt to turn the tables on congressional republicans who would like to extend for a second year these across-the- ndard spending cuts and some of wom who have threatened to have a debate over future deficit reduction tied to increasing the debt ceiling, which would avoid a government default. the white house believes both those debates are dead end politically and economically and the only way he can get etound it is to persuade the country at least for now move economic reduction has been achieved. the republicans consider this a foolhardy strategy but it's the puly one the president is going to pursue for the next few weeks. former louisiana congresswoman log has died. boggs was a real steel magnolia, heft spoken and tough as niles, especially when civil rights was the topic at hand. the democrat served in the house for 18 years and later as u.s. ambassador to the vatican.

>> ♪ after midnight we are gonna let it all hang out ♪ >> axelrod: "after midnight" was a huge hit for eric clapton, but clapton didn't write it. a songwriter named j-j cale did. cale died yesterday in la jolla, california. an oklahoma native he helped create what's known as the tulsa sound-- a combination of blues, rock-a-billy and country. cale released 14 of his own albums but his hits were made famous by others. he also wrote "cocaine" for clapton and "call me the breeze" for lynyrd skynard. j-j cale was 74-years-old. mail service, as all of us know it, could be headed for some historic change. with $16 billion in losses last year, congress is looking to cut costs. terrell brown tells us what some on capitol hill have in mind. >> reporter: the latest congressional proposal could

who is often overlooked but her contributions are now set in stone. jeff pegues has her story. >> unveil the reckless statue. >> reporter: in triangle, virginia, near the grounds of the national museum of the marine corps, the curtain dropped to reveal sergeant reckless. 60 years ago, she was a real- life war horse, pressed vito service hauling supplies and ammunition to marines in korea pinned down by enemy fire. reckleless was scared. flares were turning night into day. >> reporter: retired marine :orps sergeant harold wadley witnessed the heroism. eanturely an angel had to be riding that mare. >> reporter: in march, 1953, during the battle of outpost vegas, the mongolian mare made 51 round trips nay single day, hauling 9,000 pound of ammunition to the front lines. she earned her stripes that day and cemented her bond with the hrines around her. >> quite a horse, quite a horse.
