now it is about 70%. we begin with adriana diaz. >> reporter: not an inch of sand could be seen on rio de janeiro's copa cabana beach, those three million faces together for a sunday mass of pope that turned standing room only. when he arrived by helicopter, the crowd below said hello in sync. organizers of world youth today, a biannual gathering of young catholics from around the world choreographed a flash mob or mass dance, even bishops and

cardinals joined in. in his speech, he urged young catholics to go out and spread their faith. "the pope counts on you, go and make disciples of all people." nicholas swetland from california was overwhelmed when he saw the pope. >> i saw him coming out of the popemobile, and just going and meeting the masses, kissing babies, i started coming to tears because this is just amazing. >> reporter: while the pope created fanfare in rio and on television, many people in this area weren't watching. this is one of the many towns in brazil where a different approach to christianity is on the rise. though brazil is the world's largest catholic country it dropped from 90% to 65% in 2010. as the evangelical church gains strength. veronica flores diaz is a former catholic turned evangelical. she rejects what she calls the catholic church's middleman

between people and god. >> it is just a man. he doesn't have nothing about jesus new from me. >> reporter: the rock star response to pope francis is over blown, she says. when he departs he will just be another man leaving brazil, but the millions on the beach disagree. the president of brazil, argentina and bolivia were all here for the pope's mass, a testament to the importance of his visit to latin america. >> glor: adriana diaz, thank you. in egypt tonight, all sides remain on edge after clashes this weekend left more than 70 dead, supporters of ousted president mohamed morsi remain camped out in spots around cairo as the military appears to be gearing up for a crackdown, clarissa ward is in cairo tonight, clarissa, what is the latest? >> reporter: good evening, jeff. well, the interior ministry has said that these camps legally

must be dismantled, and so the question is now, now, how and when. today we attended the funeral of one of those morsi supporters who was killed in this weekend's clashes, at one of the protest camps and while there were far fewer demonstrators there, those who remain said that they had no intention of leaving, that they were willing to face down military tanks, or even to give their own lives in order to exercise their right to demonstrate freely, so of course the concern is with both sides digging in, any military operation could quickly devolve into yet another bloody confrontation. >> glor: clarissa, what is the interim government saying about all of this? >> reporter: well, jeff, the interim government, i am, surprisingly supports the military, an advisor to the president today told journalist the government is still in talks with muslim brotherhood supporters to try to get them to leave those camps peacefully. but he also used some very harsh language. he said that egypt is now

fighting a war against terrorism, and he describes these camps in his own words as, quote, terror originating spots so there is no question that the rhetoric here is definitely ratcheting up. >> glor: clarissa ward in cairo, thank you. flash flooding in north carolina has turned deadly. today searchers recovered the body of a second person who drowned after drenching rains swamped the state this weekend. with new thunderstorms forecast, kay johnson at wbtv says new problems are on the way. >> reporter: north carolina is bailing out today after a thunderstorms dumped almost a foot of rain across the western part of the state, rescue workers pulled 18 people from rushing waters, ten-year-old delilah lovett, kayakers recovered her body. in the city of newton, national guard members reported for duty only to find their armory in knee-high dirty water. carol chapman says the missing section of his road is the newest sightseeing attraction,

crews urged crowds to stay away. >> she came back up to my house and told me so i came down here with my truck and parked it there so no one would run off in it. >> reporter: roads, rivers bridges are closed and crews are getting to work on massive sinkholes. when you get an up close look, you see just how powerful the water was, a force strong enough to almost break that waterline in half and then wash those metal culverts into the woods. cataba county where ten inches of rain fell in only six hours declared a state of emergency, more than 60 streets are shut down in, and county officials say the repairs could take months. they are calling it some of the worst flash flooding in decade, kay johnson, cbs news, newton. >> glor: the first mideast peace talks in three years are set to begin tomorrow in washington following israel's decision today to release 104 palestinian prisoners, the prisoner issue had been a major stumbling block

between the two. our state department correspondence margaret brennan joins us now, margaret, why does secretary kerry think this can succeed now? >> reporter: well, secretary kerry called this conflict the granddaddy of them all, it is sort of the big one here and he thinks his personal relationships and his personal diplomacy can get talks going and possibly have progress here. but there is some criticism that maybe the type of focus is misplaced. it is not an issue at the top of the white house to do list and you have got egypt simmering and a civil war in syria, so there is a lot of pressure, but the bar is pretty low for success here, i mean getting to the table is not the same thing as figuring out the status of jerusalem or palestinian settlements. >> glor: what is happening in egypt, clarissa ward is there. why would secretary kerry focus, then, on this issue? >> reporter: right, this issue isn't necessarily at the nexus of u.s. national security issues right now, but from secretary kerry's perspective, it is part

of a puzzle, really, and he thinks that this pressure of what is happening in syria, what is happening in egypt makes it look for prime minister benjamin netanyahu he can settle what happens in his backyard a little easier, handle an issue central to israel's security and perhaps create an environment that prevents another palestinian type of uprising, an arab spring right there in his own backyard. so perhaps the pressure can build towards some diplomacy here. >> glor: margaret brennan, thank you. congress is getting ready for its monthlong summer vacation and like last year, lawmakers are leaving washington with another battle over the budget approaching. here is jeff pegues. >> reporter: the clock is ticking with only a month until the u.s. reaches its borrowing limit, congress is once again at odds over whether to raise the debt ceiling. jack lew urged lawmakers to act. >> they should take away the

cloud of uncertainty about the ability of the united states to pay its bills. >> reporter: two years ago when democrats and republicans fought over the same issue, the only lasting result was a bruised u.s. credit rating, downgraded for the first time in the nation's history by standard & poors, now, it is deja vu all over again. >> what is the point? >> reporter: the two sides are no closer to a resolution. after next week, congress goes home for the rest of the summer when they come back after labor day, they will have nine scheduled workdays in september to act. if both sides don't agree on how to close a $91 billion budget gap before october 1st, the government could shut down. that gap could be narrowed by defunding the affordable care act, according to republican senator mike lee of utah. >> we all know the government is going to get funded, the only question is whether the government gets funded with obamacare or without it. >> reporter: but some republicans believe such threats do more harm than good. new york congressman peter king. >> there is no reason to be at

their youth pastor, jeb phelps and his pregnant wife courtney. tonya, a mother of five was also killed. >> they are in heaven right now and we know that without a doubt but we grieve the fact they are not here with us. we miss them. >> reporter: indianapolis police are investigating. the driver told him his brakes failed as he was exiting the highway. >> he was going very fast, i have no idea how fast, but the light had turned green for the outbound traffic and then the bus just threw into, flew into my vision right away and flipped just in an instant. >> reporter: bystanders quickly moved to help the dozens of injured passengers. >> a lot of back injuries, a lot of confusion, head and neck injuries. >> i think the driver was the first one i came up on and he was bleeding pretty bad so i stole somebody's belt, the best i can remember, and got a tourniquet on his arm. >> reporter: no criminal charges have been filed, nine victims remain hospitalized. the phelps two-year-old son survived the crash. don dahler, cbs news, new york.
