powerful storms. in some places the storms caused significant damage and had deadly results. a slow moving storm system left parts of north carolina under several inches of water. last night emergency workers rescued two men whose boat tipped over in a flooded creek. more than a dozen other people were pulled from rushing waters in the western part of the state over the weekend. two people did not survive. officials say a 48-year-old man and 10-year-old girl were swept away by the currents after entering a creek. >> this kind of water right now with the current the way it is is what they were trying to swim in yesterday. >> just like that. >> just like that. >> philadelphia saw record rainfall of sunday. more than 8 inches fell in the city. sections of philadelphia international airport lost power, causing some flights to be delayed. a strong thunderstorm saturday night is believed to have plaeled a role in the deadly

crash of a helicopter. five people including a child were killed. any time weather becomes a factor, you're messing with disaster. >> heavy rain also pounded the southwest. in arizona a tour bus was knocked over and washed away. no one was hurt but passengers were forced to climb out of the bus's window. and parts of las vegas were under flash flood warnings as nearly two inches of rain fell in about a half an hour. meanwhile folks in hawaii are keeping an eye of tropical storm flossy. though it appears to be weakening, people on the island are preparing for heavy rain, high winds, and possible flossing. for more on weather here's meteorologist jeff berardelli from our miami station wfor. tropical storm, flossy, which is threatening hawaii during the day today. let's first talk about the flooding along the eastern

seaboard. big upper-level low across the great lakes. today, philadelphia set an all-time maximum daily rainfall with around 8 inches of rain that fell during the day today causing flash flooding. now, there is some good news. the whole storm system is going to be lifting and most of the rain is going to be pushing offshore with the exception of the carolinas. the eastern part of south carolina, the eastern part of north carolina, still heavy downpour are likely during the day today, but the good news is the western part of the state is starting to dry out and there has been significant flooding in north carolina. now, let's switch gears and talk about floosy. flossy is approaching the hawaiian islands as we track. takes it near the big island of hawaii monday morning. and monday night right near oahu we're expecting winds around 60, 65 miles an hour. tropical storms are 100-foot fall split the bus in

tour. the cause of the crash isn't clear. and the driver of a spanish train last week is free without bail this morning. he has been charged with negligent homside. 79 people were killed when the train derailed last wednesday. two americans are among the dead. 22 people are hospitalized in critical condition. the train was traveling far above the speed limit when it approached a curve and tumbled off the tracks. >> an indiana church is mourning the loss of a youth pastor, his pregnant wife and another member

this morning after a bus crash. all tree died when the church bus flipped in indianapolis on saturday. the crash happened in the last minutes of the 365-mile trip home from a michigan summer camp. dozens of others were injured. >> our church grieves now. they don't grieve necessarily because of the loss because god tells us in his word to be absent from the lord is to be present in hent. they're in heaven right now, we know that. but they're not here now and we miss them. the driver says the brakes failed. in egypt thousands of supporters of deposed president morsi continue their sit-in protest in cairo. it left more than 80 morsi supporters dead. the military-led government is vowing to crack down on the sit-in, accusing the protesters of terrorism.

and israeli and palestinian officials will meet face to face for the first time this year in washington. the two sides accepted invitations from john kerry to accept peace talks. tara mergener is in washington with more. good morning, tara. >> good morning, anne-marie. well, these preliminary discussions come after an intense effort by john kerry to get both parties back to the table. the hope is to develop a plan for full-blown peace talks within the next few months. demonstrators in palestine and israel protested the news that peace talks will resume today between the two governments, further evidence of the deep mistrust on both sideses. the breakthrough to get two sides talking again came after israel's cabinet approved the release of more than 100 palestinian leaders.

israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu called it a tough decision. many call it unpopular in the country. secretary of state john kerry invited the parties to america for talks after the cabinet approved the prisoners' release. >> both leaders in the region have made a courageous decision to try to return to final status talks. >> these initial talks are meant to lay the groundwork for future negotiations. sippy lidny and him will take the lead. peace talks have been off again and on again for the past 20 years. >> getting them to the table is not the same them as figuring out jerusalem. >> the last round of peace talks broke down nearly three years

poor is getting wider, and it's crossing racial lines. a new survey by the "associated press" finds four out of five u.s. adults struggle with joblessness, near poverty, or have been on welfare for at least part of their working lives. poverty rates among all raises has narrowed since the 1970s. more than 76% of white adults say they've experienced economic insecurity by the time they turn 60. the risk of economic insecurity affects almost 80% of americans across all races. asian markets saw profit-taking ahead of manufacturing data from china. tokyo's nikkei plummeted more than 3%. hong kong's hang seng lost half a percent. on wall street this week, a triple threat. investors will be keeping a close eye on the federal reserve, jobs, and earnings. last week the dow finished in the black, ending up 15 points. the nasdaq also had a good week rising 25 points. >> drivers can't seem to catch a break. gas prices keep going up.

amanda berry came out on stage for her first public appearance. she's one of three women rescued in may after being held captive for more than a decade. ariel castro, the man charged well kidnapping her , pled guily on friday and was sentenced to life without parole plus 1,000 years. according to one expert, the chances of recovering $53 million worth of jewels stolen on sunday are slim. the jewels were part of an exhibit in caanes, france, and as charlie d'agata reports, it's not the first team that thieves have hit the area. >> reporter: the holdup happened at the luxury carlton hotel in broad daylight. at least one armed robbery reportedly ran off with a briefcase full of jewels and then vanished into a crowd strolling along the promenade. it's the third time in two months jewel thieves have hit cannes. it's the work of sophisticated gangs says this french journalist.
