crisis in egypt. hundreds are dead after the government's bloody crackdown on supporters of outed president mohammed morsi. the violence leaving the country's future in doubt. as one of the pilots killed in a cargo plane crash is identified, investigators are under way to find out what made the plane go down. and wedding vow. a bride keeps a promise to herself that makes more than just her guests come to their feet. captioning funded by cbs uests come to their feast. this is the this is the "cbs morning news" for this thursday, august 15th, 2013. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, egypt is on edge this morning. yesterday was the bloodiest day there since president mohamed morsi was overthrown in july.

nearly 300 people died after the military-backed government cracked down on morsi supporters. the muslim brotherhood says its protests will continue and vows to take down the military government. the violence spread quickly across the country. egypt's interim prime minister called it a difficult day. morsi's supporters called it a massacre. jericka duncan has the coverage. >> reporter: fires burned in cairo last night as supporters of ousted president mohamed morsi clashed with security forces in sporadic battles, but the streets were mostly calm as the government called a state of emergency and called an army to force a mandatory curfew. there was a wave of violence that spread throughout the country. seven level are confirmed dead but the muslim brotherhood puts it as more than that. the prime minister defended the

the government's decision to clear out the protesters. >> when freedom of expression involves terrorizing the public, carrying on, violating people's property, it's not freedom of expression. it becomes a violation of the state and the people. >> reporter: but not everyone in the egyptian government agreed. >> today's events are deplorable. >> reporter: secretary of state john kerry says the violence is a blow for democracy in egypt. >> for the past week, perhaps even more than a week, we have urged the government to respect the right of free expression. >> reporter: in jordan, 3,000 people demonstrated in front of the egyptian em cee embassy. jericka duncan, cbs news, new york.

cbs news producer alex ortiz is in cairo. good morning, alex. it's been a little more than 24 hours since the bloodshed started. can you give us a sense of what's going on? >> reporter: good morn, anne-marie. they're still reeling after the violence that left so many dead. the streets are eerily quiet. people are staying home in fears of looming violence ahead. >> and you were right in the middle of all that chaos when it started. is there a moment or an image that has sort of stuck with you? >> i think the thing that stuck was yesterday's violence against the encamp meant. the sound of automatic gunfire was constant and ever present. the sounds of rounds pouring down was constant.

>> do you get a sense of what people on the street are feeling. there are a lot of people not affiliated with the muslim brotherhood. what are they saying about this? >> reporter: the egyptians are backed him are generally happy with this. they have believed the military and the government's line that these demonstrations were, quote, terrorism-originating spots and were anxious to see them dispersed. >> and what is expected over the next few days? >> reporter: well, that's the real question. i mean no one really knows what's going to happen next. cautious calm has returned to the area around the sit-ins, but the other things that happened last night following the crackdown was a massive wave of surprising secretarial attacks. thousands attacked christian homes and churches, so egypt is very much on edge as we wait to see how this plays out with many fearing the worst. >> alex ortiz in cairo. thank you, alex. well, among the 235 civilians killed yesterday in egypt were three journalists.

61-year-old mick dean was a cameraman for the british broadcaster "sky news." he was shot to dealt why covering the deaths in the capitol. a 26-year-old reporter for the gulf news was also killed as was an egyptian journalist who works for the state-run newspaper. and now for the weather. this is the peak of hurricane season. it's between august 15th and october 15th. the weather is swirling in the northwest caribbean. there's a high chance the storm will develop as it moves into the gulf of mexico and it could threaten the northern gust coast. in utah a wildfire pushed by strong winds and high temperatures has destroyed 14 homes. the fire started tuesday and has burned about three square miles near park city. hundreds of homes remain threatened. evacuation orders remain in effect until at least later today. the fire is about 25% contained,

but officials say with so many fires burning in the west, getting men and equipment to battle the blaze is sometimes an issue. >> we're getting adequate resources, but with all the fires nationally, it's a difficult time to get crews in as they get released or this priority on this fire becomes higher. >> another fire, the largest burning in utah, jumped the border and is burning in idaho. it's burned some 26 miles. and more testimony is expected today in the trial of major nidal hasan. hasan is representing himself. yesterday pathologists told jurors some of the victims were shot while they lie on the floor. he is accused of killing 13 people. he could face the death penalty. and the private who leaked classified information to wikileaks says he wants go to college and become a productive

citizen. he told the court he is sorry. productive citizen. alexis christoforous reports. >> reporter: bradley manning said nothing as he was lead into court for the penalty phase of his trial. he apologized to his country. i'm sorry that my actions hurt people, he said in an unsworn statement. i'm sorry that they hurt the united states. manning was convicted of handing over documents while working as an intelligence analyst in 2010. amongst the 700,000 items he provided, this video of a apache helicopter mace stakenly opening fire on civilians in baghdad. many of them were suffering from deteriorating health. evidence included photos of him

dressed as a woman. i was dealing with a lot of issues, manning said. these issues are not an excuse for my actions. manning says he knows he must pay a price for leaking the documents, something he thought would draw attention to the way u.s. was waging war in iraq and afghanistan. i believed i was going to help people, not hurt people. in retrospect i should have worked more aggressively inside the system. manning will back in court on friday. he faces up to 90 years in prison. alexis christoforous, cbs news. the man who is accused of kidnapping a california teenager apparently tortured her mother and brother before he killed them, according to just released search warrants. james dimaggio was killed during a shoot-out with fbi agents where he had fled with 16-year-old hannah anderson. investigators say dimaggio and anderson exchanged about 13 phone calls before he picked her up the day before he killed her family. coming up on the "morning news," the latest on the deadly crash of that ups cargo plane. and wait till you hear how much it costs to raise a child. it's staggering, and it does not include college. it's staggering. and it does not include college. federal investigators have yet to recover the so-called black boxes from the ups cargo plane that crashed in alabama. it crashed into a field just outside the birmingham airport. people who saw the jet plow into the ground say they heard the engines struggling, and there were two pilots on board. a family friend says one was shanda fanning. back in her hometown of tennessee she's known by her maiden name shanda carney and is remembered for her love of flying. >> she lived and breathed aviation. she was the consummate aviator. amelia earhart had nothing on shanda carney. >> friends say she has been flying since she was a teenager. manuel bojorquez has more.

>> reporter: flames lit up a predawn sky on grassy field half a mile from alabama international airport. flight 1354 was on a routine service flight from louisville, kentucky, to birmingham, alabama, when residents were suddenly awakened by the explosion. eddie smith lives nearby. >> it shook my house so bad i thought it was coming off the foundation. >> reporter: pine tree tops were shirred off as it mates its approach barely missing houses. debris spread for blocks. flight recording data shows at 3:43 central time it made a deep descent in about a minute. that's three times faster than it normally descends. robert sumwall from the ntsb said there was no distress call from the pilots.

>> it appears the aircraft went through some trees and impacted toward the bottom of the hill where there's evidence of fire. the tail section of the aircraft is still smoldering, still smoking, and for that reason, we have not been able to get in and get the black boxes if you will, the cockpit voice recorder, the flight data recorder. >> reporter: a law enforcement officials tell us at this point there is no evidence of terrorism or foul play. the a-300 aircraft is the workhorse of the shipping industry, but in the u.s. it is no longer used for passenger transport. manuel bojorquez, cbs news, birmingham, alabama. on the "cbs moneywatch" now, children are getting more expensive, and another good day for apple. marlie hall is here in new york with those stories and more. good morning, marlie. >> good morning, anne-marie. fears about when the federal reserve will start tapering its investment program sent investors scrambling. the unease spread to wall street. another drag on the market was the poor earnings report from macy's.

the dow suffered its biggest one-day loss in two months, plummeting 113 points on wednesday. the nasdaq was down 15 points. >> apple stocks have had a good couple of days. shares went above $500 for a time on wednesday. the highest level since january. it closed at just over $498. on tuesday shares jumped about 5% after carl icahn report lid bought over billion dollars of the tell giant's stock. jpmorgan is the nation's largest bank. the losses topped $6 billion. the bank was not charged. al third trader who engineered the deal avoided prosecution by helping investigators build a case against the other two traders. and a new report from the federal government says it will cost $241,000 to raise a child from birth to the age of 18.

he suffered a torn tendon in that same knee that cost him the season in 2008. he is listed as day to day, but it's unclear whether he'll play in new england's preseason game on friday night. and some extra-innings drama between the oakland a's and the houston astros. in the bottom of the tenth, oakland's chris young thinks he has a home run, but after robby grossman steals the home run away with a leaping catch of the ball, young just cannot believe it. houston goes on to win it, 2-1. and great finish to the national giant's game. san francisco's hunter pence comes in with two outs in the ninth and a go-ahead base. >> left center, denard span, he's got it. the game is over! >> denard span's catch secures a 6-5 win for the nats.

the couple at the center of an adoption battle that went all the way to the supreme court is turning up the pressure. matt and melanie cap powe bianco are in oklahoma where the little girl they adopted four years ago is living with her biological father. they say the fight has gone on too long. craig day reports. >> reporter: saying the whole custody fight is being dragged out unnecessarily, melanie and matt cap a bianco arrived in tulsa and requested immediately to seaver on ka. >> my heart broke when we were denied. >> reporter: they want the courts to recognize the custody should be returned from her biological father in oklahoma to them.

>> people have wondered why after 19 months that we chose to come to oklahoma, and it's simple. it's time for this to be over. >> reporter: the south carolina couple was adopting the little girl when in 2011 the court ruled they had to turn over custody to dusten brown under the indian child welfare act. the supreme court ruled the act did not apply and sent the case back to south carolina. then a court in south carolina ruled in their favor. >> we want to see resolution for veronica. >> brown hasn't turned over veronica yet, but the cap powe biancos say they're determined to bring veronica home. >> if it takes another week or decade or month, we're not going anywhere. >> reporter: the couple says they're open to some type of arrangement where he could have visitation. >> where we can restore our loving and wonderful family and
