strong winds and dry weather are fueling dozens of wildfires throughout the west. and today's conditions won't help firefighters battle the flames. a new twist in the crisis in egypt. jail former president hosni mubarak could walk free this week adding to the all heightened tensions in the country. >> come on, you got to get out. you got to get out. he goes, i'm okay, i'm okay. good samaritans come to the rescue of dick van dyke. the entertainment legend is pulled from his car moments before it bursts into flames. and family additions. the first family welcomes a new pet to the white house, while prince william opens up about being a first-time father. >> well, as a few fathers might know, i'm actually anxious to get back. >> this is the "cbs morning

news" for tuesday, august 20th, >> this is the "cbs morning news" for tuesday, august 20th, 2013. captioning funded y cbs good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, this wildfire season could shape up to be one of the most destructive on record. the national interagency fire center said 3.3 million acres have been destroyed so far, fuelled by hot weather and strong winds, there are currently 49 large fires burning in 11 western states. at least nine are burning in idaho. the worst is the nearly two-week-old beaver creek fire. it's destroyed more than 100,000 acres. the fire appears to be calming, hundreds of fires were evacuated in the resort communities of ketchum and sun valley, but some residents are being allowed to return. >> now, it's more worrying about the land and animals and the firefighters and how long is the

smoke going to be here. you know, so the worry level is down. >> more than 1,000 firefighters are fighting the beaver creek fire with the help of 14 helicopters. and a wildfire in northern oregon has burned at least 5,000 acres. dozens of buildings were evacuated. there were no reports of injuries, though. and in the south, the issue is too much water. flood warnings are posted from florida to the carolinas. mississippi is trying to dry out after getting drenched with six inches of rain on sunday. in hard-hit gulfport, members of one church were stranded for hours. some say the flooding was worse than hurricane katrina. meteorologist craig setzer tells us whether there's going to be a break in these dangerous conditions. >> much of the region has

seen one extreme of weather to the area. parts too wet. parts too dry. the reason, the jet stream taking a very unusually large dip through eastern parts of the country that's causing rain in the southeast and dry conditions in the west. this type of pattern usually doesn't move a whole lot. more hot and dry weather expected in the northern rockies and the pacific northwest. so know relief for the wildfires there. and moisture continues to come up out of the caribbean and gulf of mexico. flooding is once again possible for parts of florida, as well as georgia, alabama and on to the carolinas. now because the pattern is so large in amplitude, big ridges and big dips in the jet stream, it's probably not moving a whole lot so the weather that these folks are seeing is going to stick around at least for the next several days. craig setzer in miami for cbs news. the former president of pakistan perez musharraf was charged this morning in the death of former prime minister benazir bhutto. the charges include conspiracy

and conspiracy to commit murder. bhutto was assassinated in 2007, musharraf is currently under house arrest in connection with another case. his lawyer says he has pled not guilty. also overseas, the supreme leader of egypt's government has been arrested. president hosni mubarak could be getting out of prison. susan mcginnis has the details. susan, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. the possible arrest now of mohamed morsi has many predicts a return to the repressive government in egypt and it has many on capitol hill calling on washington to suspend aid. former president hosni mubarak has been acquitted on corruption charges and his lawyers tell us that he will be released from jail in the next 48 hours. a popular uprising of the egyptian people swept mubarak out of office in 2011, a move intended to usher in democratic reform but mubarak's replacement

mohamed morsi is now behind bars himself. and early this morning, many more arrests in a government crackdown in a muslim brotherhood, including mohammed's body the spiritual leader of the group. calls from the u.s. for reconciliation efforts have been ignored. >> politically motivated tensions inside egypt should end. >> reporter: the turmoil in egypt has lawmakers here calling for president obama to suspend aid to the country. but even cutting off nearly $1.5 billion in annual support may not bring the change washington is hoping for. >> good afternoon. >> reporter: on monday, secretary of defense chuck hagel was asked if cutting aid to egypt would help end the violence there. >> our ability to influence the outcome in egypt is limited. it's up to the egyptian people. >> reporter: egypt may not lose a dime. saudi arabia said it will reimburse egypt if western countries suspend their aid. now, so far, it's very unlikely that washington will suspend all

aid to egypt. so far, the government here is making only small moves, canceling the delivery of some f-16 fighter jets and canceling military exercises planned for next month. anne-marie. >> thank you, susan. san diego mayer bob filner appeared in public for the first time yesterday following weeks of intensive therapy. he is fighting to keep his job amid allegations of sexual harassment. bigad shaban reports from san diego. >> reporter: mayor filner didn't say much as he walked into a closed-door meeting at the city attorney's office. also in the building, filner's former communication director and one of his accusers, maureen jackson was with her attorney gloria allred. >> the mediator has asked us not to comment because the mediation is ongoing. >> reporter: rachel laing helped filner get elected last year, as a member of his campaign staff but now she's one of the organizers pushing to get him out.

>> several other victims who haven't come forward publicly have come forward to me. so i know this is true. i don't have any doubt in my mind that this is a predatory pattern. >> reporter: the mayor's attorney say filner will continue out-patient treatment to correct his behavior towards women but, they say, he never committed sexual harassment. on the steps of city hall, former supporters voice their frustration, including vicki manning. she says while she's experienced sexual harassment by her former employer, she believes a recall election would be a costly burden on taxpayers and an unfair assault on the mayor. he admitted to disrespecting women is that enough in your mind to ask him to resign? >> absolutely not. that doesn't disqualify him from doing his job. >> reporter: even if filner's critics collect enough signatures for a recall, it could be months before it's brought to a vote. bigad shaban, san diego. kidnapper james dimaggio left $112,000 in life insurance

its stimulus program. hong kong's hang seng fell more than 2%. stocks finished lower for the fourth trading session in a row. it's the first time that's happened this year. the dow fell nearly 71 points. the nasdaq lost over 13. troubled jcpenney releases its second quarter earnings today. it's unlikely there will be much good news for investors. analysts expect a ninth straight drop in sales. investor bill ackman quit the board last week after pushing for a new ceo. there were temporary technical problems at the website of the world's largest retailer amazon.com. the website went down yesterday for about 15 minutes, affecting many users in the u.s. and canada. it's unclear what caused the problem. amazon does about $163,000 of business per minute. there will be more cars on the road this labor day weekend. aaa expects 34.1 million americans will drive 50 miles or more. that's a 4.2% increase from last

severe flooding in eastern russia forced an unusual rescue. two captive bears were airlifted in their cage to higher ground. the cage had been at a campsite where the waters were approaching. the bears appeared to be doing quite well after their trip. the region has seen the worst flooding in 120 years. and a new study finds that lyme disease is more common than previously thought. the centers for disease control says the infection spread by deer ticks strikes 300,000 americans a year. and as dr. jon lapook reports, the ticks may be spreading a new kind of illness. >> reporter: in june 2011, 89-year-old harry woske

got sick from what seemed to be the flu. the avid hunter suspected lyme disease. >> feverish, chilly, achy and weaker. i almost collapsed, and then was admitted to the hospital. >> i think it's a risk of a mysterious disease. >> reporter: dr. joseph gugliotta diagnosed woske not with lyme but with miyamotoi. his was just the second documented case in the united states. it's caused by the type of bacteria found by the deer tick, the same tick that transmits lyme diseases and other illnesses. >> there are patients that came up negative on that. we were sure they had something, but we couldn't prove what they had. >> reporter: the bacteria may have caused infection in recent years without being recognized. researchers have found them in

2% of deer ticks. lyme is present in 20%. dr. gary worms of new york medical college was part of a team that found patients with or without it. >> what we still have to learn, how frequently it causes human infections, what are the simple simple storms and signs. >> reporter: when a patient comes in with a fever over the summer, do we have to think this is a new disease? >> i think you do. you have to think about tick-borne disease if there's tick exposure. >> reporter: you don't have to see a tick? >> absolutely not. >> reporter: you're in an area that has ticks? >> a majority of times, you don't recall tick bites. >> reporter: the estimates are so much higher than previous official numbers because most cases go unreported. but the cdc told me there's also been a real increase in lyme cases, likely tripling over the
