over by the toll plaza, they are ripping out concrete, they are shifting lanes over to the new approach. at the same time, they're putting the finishing touches on the transition on and off yerba buena island making it nice and smooth all the striping. as for the rest of the old bridge it's going to take about three years to tear it all down, they tell us. they will go from west to east tarting with the "s" curve. i got kind of attached to it after the last couple of years. that's coming out. it will be a painstaking process for sure. >> right now, this is a highly strong and stressed system. and when we start deconstructing it, we're going to start taking members down from this system and the first member we take out and all of a sudden the system isn't there anymore. >> reporter: yeah. crews will be working with the original bridge blueprints during the deconstruction process. they need to know exactly how it went up and that's the way they will take it down. they will just kind of reverse
6:31 pm
engineer that thing and then pull it all apart kind of like a huge erector set. it's going to look weird because there's a portion that's not going to be supported for a few months and that should be something for photographers to get a good look at. so over here on yerba buena island, as i say, you can see a lot of work going on. there are trucks going up and down. it's just an out sight to look eastbound -- an odd side to look eastbound on a thursday afternoon and see no traffic. but that's the good parted of this. once all the construction gets done we will have a brand-new bridge. overall been a pretty crazy couple of day for bay area transit companies. yesterday was bart's 10th busiest day ever on record. today could be another record setter. just this morning about 161,000 people took bart and that is about 30,000 more than this sometime last year. mark kelly is standing by at the embarcadero bart station with a look at exactly what's going on as people head home.
6:32 pm
a lot of people taking the train, huh, mark? >> reporter: they were. it's quiet here around the embarcaderos, it's later in the evening. things are quieting down heading into the holiday weekend. earlier today we were talking to some bart riders and they say those trains were absolutely packed. but they give a lot of credit to the bart officials for keeping everything running very smoothly. [ pause ] [ no narrative to video ] >> reporter: we're going to toss it back to you, ken. >> all right. sounds good, mark. you know, here's the deal. if you don't have a pass, a special pass, you can't get out to yerba buena island and also
6:33 pm
you can't get to treasure island unless you're a resident with a special pass. we have noticed a very high security presence a lot of chp out there, allen and even a san francisco police patrol boat underneath the bridge who we have seen pull over a couple of sailboats. i guess they have an area down there they don't want people going underneath because of all the construction work and they are chasing people out of there and i'm sure giving them a little bit of a tongue lashing if nothing else. that's the situation from bi and we'll have more up as the newscast continues. >> ken condition on yerba buena island. i was on -- ken bastida on yerba buena island. i was on treasure island. i think they will stay anchored for the long holiday weekend and watch the activity. >> i was on the san mateo bridge for a long time. liza battalones is going to fill us in on traffic now. quite the scenic route. >> reporter: yes. all you saw was red brake lights lots of cars. that's the scene right now with so many drivers trying to find their way home. chopper 5 has been up and out
6:34 pm
cruising the skies over the san mateo bridge. that has been one of the worst commutes we have seen in a very long time. still bumper to bumper traffic for south 101 leaving 380. stays slow to highway the 2. 280 continues to be a good option if you need to leave san francisco for the south bay. dumbarton bridge also looking good as an alternative to the bay bridge closure. now, the golden gate commute in marin county has been socked in with traffic. north 101 getting towards the golden gate still bumper to bumper from the marina district. you can see that slow traffic just a few minutes ago. 101 very slow heading to and through marin county and right here over at the bay bridge toll plaza, the only traffic you will see is the construction crews waiting to do what they need to do to reopen the bridge by tuesday morning. close by, westbound 80 has been jam-packed all day as folks try to get used to the lane closures there. right now, westbound slow from university avenue approaching the baze and no delays on bart. >> thank you, liza battalones. fast food workers in the

bay area and across the nation are demanding restaurants supersize their paychecks. kpix 5's da lin shows us cooks in the east bay were willing to drop their spatulas and walk off the job to make their point. reporter: a loud protest as union members and some fast food workers marched to an oakland kfc shutting it down briefly demanding the fast food industry allow them to unionize and increase their minimum wages to $15 an hour. evelyn walked out of the job even after her supervisor threatened to fire her. >> i'm doing this because i have hope and with that hope you can accomplish anything. >> reporter: her dream to transfer to uc-berkeley and it's a difficult task considering she is barely surviving at $8 an hour working at a mcdonald's. >> by minimum like a little bit of --buy minimum like a little bit of food and save it in small amounts. eat small amounts. >> reporter: others rely on government assistance. >> if i didn't get no food stamps from the government i wouldn't be able to buy food it's so expensive nowadays.
6:36 pm
>> reporter: this one-day strike is part of a national movement that started on the east coast locally hundreds of fast food workers walking out of their restaurants. this is just one of three demonstrations in oakland today. >> thank you. >> reporter: the fast food industry says it's impossible to pay a minimum of $15 an hour. >> the call for a $15 an hour minimum wage would significantly impact job creation in the restaurant industry. that's a doubling of the minimum wage right now. >> reporter: even some fast food workers say it's not realistic. >> i think they are pushing it. it's minimum wage. none of us have degrees in here. >> reporter: right now, san francisco has the nation's highest minimum wage. 10.55 an hour. san jose recently voted to raise its minimum wage to $10. >> it should be in effect for everybody else. you're going to get everybody else's hours cut and food costs to go. >> reporter: she disagrees saying a higher wage will benefit everyone. in oakland, i'm da lin, kpix 5. >> workers at mcdonald's, burger king and other fast-food restaurants in 60 cities including new york, chicago and

detroit, also went on strike today. it is a costly consequence for the san francisco giants. >> what the feds said the team didn't do right for years come back to haunt them. >> i'm i'm meteorologist paul deanno reporting live from a sunny quiet treasure island. behind me, the new eastern span of the bay bridge. will the weather continue to cooperate for final construction of that bridge? that and your labor day weekend forecast coming up. ,,,, unbelievable.

the san francisco giants dos in back wages and damages. that's after the feds founde the san francisco giants just paid out more than half million dollars in back wages and damages. that's after the feds found that the team wasn't following the rules when it came to paying their clubhouse workers. this involves 74 major and minor league employees over a three-year period. they were supposed to work a set number of hours for a flat rate but the investigation found they were putting in a lot of extra hours for no extra pay. chief meteorologist paul deanno bringing us our pinpoint forecast live from treasure island tonight. >> reporter: it is gorgeous out here tonight great weather for construction for the folks working on the bridge. just really beautiful weather to get outside. yes, treasure island is getting
6:41 pm
breezy but that's par for the course in the summertime in the afternoon. really the fog has not been an issue and it's much less windy compared to 24 hours ago when we were out here live yesterday. want to tell you something interesting about the bay bridge how it plays into weather and those very, very beautiful light poles that are on the bay bridge. they are not round. engineers love round light poles because the wind will just whip around it and not cause an issue. the designer of the bay bridge said, i don't want round light post. i felt pentagonal shaped light poles five sides. the reason why much of the design elements of the bridge, they ar pentagonal. the problem if you are an engineer making sure the bridge is safe is that because there are flat sides or flat surfaces on the sides of the light poles themselves, it actually makes them more susceptible to grab the energy of the wind and makes them more fragile. so a couple of years ago they put up two or three of the light poles in advance to test and make sure they were secure enough on the bridge.
6:42 pm
they had to do a lot of extra work simply because of the shape of the light poles and because it's such a windy environment nearly 24/7 out there for the bay bridge. let's talk about your forecast. got a holiday weekend coming up trying to wrap up construction here. weather will not be an impediment to either of those. fog is moving in. a foggy start for city near the water tomorrow. current temperatures outside now gorgeous. concord 83. livermore 83. santa rosa 82. pair of 77s for san jose and oakland and san francisco cooling down predictably into the mid- to upper 60s. kpix 5 schoolcast, let us take you to walnut creek and foothill middle school. a forecast just for you foothill. 63 degrees tomorrow morning. lunchtime bringing it outside 84. when school's wrapped up a height of 93 degrees. kpix.com/schoolcast is where you can go to nominate your school. if we could advance all the way to the seven-day forecast, because i want to spend time on that and that specifically, we

6:48 pm
at this squad right now and put your finger on what they are going to have to improve on, to be bet they are season. >> i think a couple of things. defensively they have to force more turnovers. look at peyton manning, look at tom brady with the new england patriots. the more you give the football back to offenses of that caliber obviously enhancing your chances of winning. so 25 turnovers last year in terms of takeaways forced by defense only two in the preseason. >> when i say better, i mean one game better, right? they just need into. >> one play better. >> one play better. >> use your time-outs wisely. >> we have some major breaking news regarding a member of the san francisco 49ers, kim. we'll lead that off with the broadcast coming up in a couple of minutes. go back now to san francisco. >> all right, thanks, guys. looking forward to. the nfl has modified rules and changed equipment to help reduce the risk of head injuries. today the league made strides to assist former players. the league reached a $765

6:54 pm
against the seahawks tonight in seattle while matt flynn rests his arm. pryor seems to be the backup when training camp began but flynn was booed off the field which didn't sit well with pryor. >> i didn't think they went about it the right way. i mean, i went in and they got what they wanted but i thought it could have been a little better way not booing him and stuff like that. so, you know, just whenever you can, guys, just try to keep that down. we have to be with each other through thick and thin. problems happen, you can't boo a guy. >> nice to see he has his back. this time last year colin kaepernick was a virtual unknown to the national audience but it wasn't just his trip to the super bowl that made him one of the nfl's biggest stars. dennis o'donnell has more on the summer of kaep. >> in the air, no fly, incomplete. >> replayed it a lot. it's something i think about a lot. >> reporter: the super bowl was
6:55 pm
the only thing that didn't go colin kaepernick's way last season. the 25-year-old from turlock has emerged as within of the most popular players in the league despite having only 10 starts under his belt. >> it's a little bit different for me. it's something that my dad talked to me a lot about as far as when people are coming up, taking pictures, asking for autographs, things like that, how to handle different situations and to kind of put yourself in their shoes and remember when you were that person asking for autographs. >> he's universally respected in the locker room and loved by his teammates. i guess i see that from the 25 to 35 demographic too that are buying jerseys. >> reporter: kaepernick certainly had plenty of exposure this off season, commercials, magazine covers, red carpets and photo shoots. >> didn't hurt anybody. didn't show any of his parts that he can't show.
6:56 pm
