martin. mark strassmann reports. >> reporter: news helicopter showed george zimmerman being questioned by police outside the home of his wife's parents, minutes after shellie zimmerman had called 911. >> he's in his car and he continually has his hand on his gun and he keeps saying step closer. he's just threatening all of us. >> step closer to what? >> with his firearm. and he's gonna shoot us. >> okay. >> he punched my dad in the nose, my dad has a mark on his face. i saw his glasses were on the floor. he accosted my father and then took my ipad out of my hand and smashed it and cut it with a pocket knife. i don't know what he's capable of. i'm really, really scared. >> reporter: shellie zimmerman filed for divorce last week. she and her parents declined to press charges. after monday's confrontation. george zimmerman was not arrested. >> we, the jury, find george zimmerman not guilty. >> reporter: last july, he was acquitted of second degree murder for shooting trayvon martin. zimmerman thought the unarmed teenager looked suspicious and

they got into a deadly fight. zimmerman is entitled to carry a fire am again. in july, he had a gun in his truck when texas police pulled him over for speeding. late yesterday afternoon, maricopa police told us shellie zimmerman changed the story and now claims she never saw a gun during the confrontation. zimmerman's lawyer said he was armed but kept his gun under his shirt the whole time. no one is pressing any charges. mark strassmann, cbs news. >> a little bit of an update late monday night, police said zimmerman did not have a gun on his person. on the "cbs moneywatch," apple gets ready to unveil the next iphone and credit card debt slides. marlie hall is here in new york with those stories and more, good morning, marlie. >> good morning. anne-marie, asian markets don't rally after positive retail sales data from china. tokyo's nikkei added more than 1%. hong kong's hang seng gained 1%.

americans may be cautious about the economy, for the second straight month, they've cut back on using credit cards. the federal reserve said the money oded on credit cards dropped in july to an annual rate of 2.6%. in june, it dropped to over 5% americans are using more to buy cars and go to school. a good day on wall street, the markets got a boost from rising home prices and a couple of big sales. the dow rose 140 points to finish above 15,000 for the first time in more than two weeks. the nasdaq jumped 46 points. one of those sales was neiman marcus. on monday, aris management and the canadian investment board said they'll buy the retailer for $6 billion. and the board said they'll use

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. new york, partly sunny today but thunderstorms in miami. sunshine in chicago and dallas. los angeles will start out cloudy but the sun comes out a little later in the day. in ohio, the man who made a dramatic video confession will be in court today. matthew cordle will be arraigned on charges he caused a deadly crash after a night of heavy drinking. but as allison harmon tells us, the family of the man who was alleged killed believes cordle confessed to get a lighter sentence. >> reporter: matthew cordle turned himself into police in columbus, ohio, after a dramatic online confession. >> my name is matthew cordle. and on june 22nd, 2013, i hit and killed vince canzani.

this video is my confession. >> reporter: cordle's 3 1/2-minute video has gone viral. the 22-year-old admits he got drunk and crashed head on into vincent canzani's car. his blood alcohol limit was twice the legal limit. police put him in handcuffs. he plans to plead guilty. but cordle's public confession is of no comfort to vincent canzani's daughter who calls the video self-serving. quote, my family has not been helped at all by this video. nothing has changed for the better and if anything it has only caused us heartache. cordle said he posted this on the internet to send a message. >> i'm begging you, please don't drink and drive. still to come, your tuesday morning weather. and why a pro soccer player is getting death threats from some pop music fans. my asthma's under control.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. washington, d.c., partly sunny today. thunderstorms, though, in atlanta. mostly sunny in st. louis. thunderstorms in denver and seattle will be sunny with a high of 83. ♪ and time now for a check of the national forecast. a dome of heat expands across the country. extreme heat will blanket nebraska and the lower great lakes. some areas could reach 105 degrees. in the northeast, temperatures will hit in the 80s. and showers and thunderstorms will develop in the southwest. in sports now, week one of the nfl season comes to a close with a monday night doubleheader. in the late game, san diego gets out to a big lead over houston, chargers quarterback philip rivers throws four touchdown passes to make it 28-7 but the

texans come back and tie the game up in the fourth quarter, when brian cushing intercepts rivers and brings it back for a touchdown and houston finishes off the big comeback with the randy bullet kicked a 41-yard field goal with no time to win it for the texans. 31-28. in the early game, eagles coach chip kelly makes his nfl debut. philadelphia uses its new no huddle offense to build a 33-7 lead against washington. redskins quarterback robert griffin iii gets his team back in the game in the second half but washington's comeback effort comes up short. the eagles hold on for a 33-27 win. and for the third time in four years, rafael nadal and novak djokovic met in the u.s. open men's finals, each man winning once. but it was nadal's time to shine in the hard court in new york yesterday. nadal came out on top on the 3 hour 20 minute match.

winning his second u.s. open title and 13th grand slam tournament. he trails only pete sampras and roger federer in grand slam victories. in baseball, dodgers third baseman juan uribe has a career ninth. the 13-year veteran homers in his first three at-bats against arizona. it's the first three-homer game of his career. as a team, the dodgers would hit six home runs in an 8-1 victory. and an english premier soccer player is receiving death threats for a play he made during a charity game. gabriel agbonlahor accidently ran over louis tomlinson. during a match in scotland on sunday, and for the uninefficieuninitiated, tomlinson is a member of the boy band undirection. some members of the british boy band saw the play and lashed out against agbonlahor on twitter. the pro player said he will apologize to tomlinson when he sees him again.

this painting went from worthless to worth millions. it's a van gogh and had been sitting in an attic for 60 years because the owners thought it was a fake. officials at the museum in amsterdam said the owner brought it to them in 2011 to be authenticated. the painting is the first full-size canvas painting by the dutch artist to be discovered since 1928. and a teenager in south carolina is using her skills in photography to reach out to the homeless community. as chip reid reports it's a personal project that gained support along the way. >> reporter: 16-year-old victoria turner has wanted to own a business since she was 7. she loves taking pictures so she

put together a plan for a photography business and entered her high school's entrepreneur competition. each contestant had to give back to the community. turner chose photographing homes families at no charge. >> everybody has some type of beauty and i just wanted to show that to the world and just make them feel great about themselves. >> reporter: turner's plan was big on doing good but short on making money. how would you describe the business? >> i would say it's not on the profit side it's more on the nonprofit side as of right now. >> reporter: turner told the judges she enjoyed photographing the homeless because as a young girl she and her mother briefly lived in a shelter. she wanted to give back. that caught the attention of some of the judges including one of the judges margie bizarro. >> i said there's no way we can let go.

someone's got to do something to help her. >> reporter: bizarro knew first hand what she was talking about. >> the way i grew up, you know, i was a single parent home, you know, my mom just didn't have a lot of resources, but she -- there were people that helped us along the way. >> reporter: turner did not win the competition, but the judges gave her an award for most heart which including a $250 prize. she used the money to buy clothes for homeless families to wear in their photo sessions. >> i'll never forget what she's doing at all. >> reporter: sandra dangerfield and her four children have spent five months in shelters over the past year. what do you think about the picture? >> it's from heart. >> reporter: leandra baker said the competition has transformed her once shy daughter. now turner wants to go to college and get a business degree but she said her business will be less about making money but helping people in need. chip reid, cbs news, summerville, south carolina.

my dad. so yeah, it was a great time. hey, we're starting to see more fog around the bay area this morning, moving further onshore some good news for those folks fighting the fire near mount diablo. well, looks like the temperatures outside in the 50s and the 60s now. we'll talk about it coming up. >> we have a dense fog advisory issued. and we have road closures around mount diablo state park because of the fire so we'll break those down for you as well coming up. >> had the wipers going this morning. >> yeah. >> a little misty. >> thank you. mount diablo state park is closed right now because of fire. hundreds of firefighters are on the job. flames have now reached the peak of the mountain chewing through more than 3700 acres. it's only 20% contained right now. and people in as many as 100 homes around the outskirts of clayton remain evacuated. the fire started sunday afternoon on morgan territory
