in an online video makes a surprising plea in court. >> at this time, judge, we'd enter a plea of not guilty. captioning funded by cbs " for thursday, september 12th, thursday, september this is the "cbs morning news" for thursday, september 12th, 2013. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, this morning the president of russia has issued a very personal warning concerning the crisis in syria. vladimir putin writing "the new york times" warning that u.s. military intervention would unleash a new wave of terrorism. he said there's no doubt poison gas was used in syria but there was every reason to believe it was not used by the syrian army but by opposition forces to provoke intervention by their powerful foreign patrons who would be siding with fundamentalists. today high-level talks start between russia and the united states to talk about the chemical weapons. the white house says it's time for russia to step up.

>> russia's assad's and syria's closest ally. russia has played a role in blocking the efforts thus far to hold assad accountable and what they are doing presents a real opportunity if it were to be successful. >> susan mcginnis is in washington with more on this. good morning, susan. >> good morning, anne-marie. today secretary of state kerry and russian foreign minister sergei lavrov get into the weeds of this agreement, details on this herculean task of stripping seary of its chemical weapon, this as russia itself is keeping up roadblocks to this deal and now its president is telling americans why they do not want the u.s. to strike. russian president vladimir putin has a warning for the american people. in a "new york times" editorial putin said the potential strike by the united states against syria will result in more innocent victims and escalation, potentially spreading the conflict far beyond syria's borders. he added, we must stop the

language of force and return to the path of civilized diplomatic and political settlement. a political settlement could be in the works. secretary of state john kerry meets with his russian counterpart in switzerland today. they're discussing a russian plan for syria to turn over all of its chemical weapons to avoid a u.s. military strike. >> if assad's chemical weapons stockpiles can be secure and removed from his possession absent military force, that would be a very good thing. >> but that's a big "if." the u.s. will agree to the russian proposal only if it can be sure syria turns over all of its chemical weapons. >> syria is considered by most experts a chemical weapons super power. >> experts believe chemical weapons are spread throughout the country. >> i would say our knowledge of the exact location of these weapons is inexact at this point. >> there are chemical weapons that need to be rounded up and destroyed.

president obama says he's willing to wait and see if this diplomatic solution works but says he will not hesitate to strike if that plan fails. anne-marie? >> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. well, this morning a flash flood warning is posted for parts of central colorado, northwest of denver. there is already localized flooding in boulder county. the "denver post" reports at least one person has been killed and that several homes have collapsed. the city of erie is hardest hit with up to a foot of standing water. roads are closed, basements flooded, and several power lines have been knocked down. the main campus of the university of colorado in boulder will be closed today. and a california wildfire has turned deadly. the body of a 58-year-old man was found inside a burned out motor home near happy valley. the clover fire breek out monday. it's destroyed 37 homes and at one point forcedhe evacuation of 300 others. 50% of the fire is contained this morning, but fierce winds are spreading the fire across 500 acres an hour.

evangelical church. yesterday he was driving a pickup truck carrying a grill, kerose kerosene, and korans. jones and an assistant pastor were charged with the unlawful conveyance of fuel. back in 2010 jones threatened to burn a koran on the 9/11 anniversary but called it off. to many, yesterday's exercise at logan airport in boston on 9/11 is a case of very poor timing. airport officials are apologizing. adriana diaz reports. >> reporter: black smoke rose above boston's logan airport wednesday morning as cruise hosed down a burning plane. at least that's what it looked like from afar. it was actually a staged fire drill on dummy aircraft scheduled on one of the most sensitive days of the calendar, the anniversary of the september 11th attacks. >> if someone planned it for

this day without realizing what the day means to so many people, that's rather inexcusable. >> reporter: passengers at the airport were surprised and some saw the smoke and flames as their flights approached. >> as we were landing and kind of pointing to the gate, i saw there was a big huge plume of smoke. >> reporter: the two hijacked planes that struck the twin towers in 2001 took off from boston's logan airport. social media lit up with comments after the drill. like travelers aren't going to be on edge enough already. and people died 12 years ago on flights originating out of your airport. how dare you. officials had announced wednesday's drill on facebook and twitter, but later sent an embarrassed follow-up apology. governor's deval patrick didn't know about the event in advance. >> i didn't know it was going to happen. it's just -- i mean the timing could not be -- could not be worse. >> reporter: adriana diaz, cbs news.

on the "cbs moneywatch" now, foreclosure filings drop and a record bond deal for verizon. wendy gillette is here in new york with that and more. good morning, wendy. >> good morning, anne-marie. asian stocks were mixed on a stronger yen. tokyo's nikkei fell half a percent, hong kong's hang seng was flat. on wall street stocks were mostly higher as actions against syria can be averted. the dow is up 135 points. the nasdaq posted a small loss finishing 4 points lower. verizon has the biggest corporate bond deal ever. verizon raised $49 billion yesterday, money it will use to buy the rest of its wireless business from partner vodafone. verizon's bond sale is nearly triple the next largest corporate bond offering. last month foreclose proceedings were started against the fewest number of homes in years. realty track reports the number fell 8% in august from july and climbed 4% from a year ago.

in northern columbia floodwaters swept an elderly man into the river. 92-year-old roberto blanco was trapped under a bridge clinging to a cable. that's when a police officer heard his cries. the officer enlisted the help of passersby, and they used a rope to pull him to safety. he was wet but otherwise oklahoma. an ohio man who used the internet to confess to a fatal drunk driving death was in court on wednesday. matthew cordle said he will accept his punishment, but when it came time for him to go before a judge, something else happened. >> my name is matthew cordle. and on june 22nd, 2013, i hit and killed vincent canzani. this video will act as my confession. >> since matthew cordle's confession was posted on the internet last week, it's been

viewed more than 2 million times. during the 3 1/2-minute video cordle says he made the confessional to raise awareness about drunk driving and that he's ready to be punished. >> when i get charged, i'll plead guilty and take full responsibility for everything i've done to vincent and his family. >> but that's not what happened when cordle was arraigned in court on wednesday. >> at this point my client will plead not guilty. >> cordle's attorneys say the move was procedural and that their client will eventually plead guilty next week, however, the judge indicated this week cordle's defense team made the move because she wouldn't promise to hand down a specific sentence. >> it would have been nice to get everything done today and wrapped but the fact that we have date certain and look forward to and know what he's going to do on that date, i think that will bring matt some relief. >> in the meantime he'll remain in jail rather than posting his $250,000 bond. >> he wants to stay in jail to

leagues wrap up a three-game series. the pirates get out to an early lead on texas and hold off a late-inning rally by the rangers. pittsburgh wins 7-5 to complete a sweep of texas, and the rangers have lost nine of their last 12 games. as texas slides, oakland is starting to run away with the division. the iowa the a's scored ten runs in the fourth inning on their way to an 18-3 win over minnesota. oakland has opened up a three-game lead over texas in the a.l. west. and in new york a tribute to the victims and heroes of 9/11. >> tonight we pause to honor the memory of those we lost in these attacks. >> a representative of the city's first responders to the world trade center was honored at citi field before the mets/nationals game. during the pregame ceremonies, mets players clutched new york fire and police department hats.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. washington, d.c., showers, 91 degrees. sunny in atlanta but a chance of thunderstorms in st. louis and rain in denver as well. seattle, nothing but sunshine, a high of 88. police in florida say the investigation into a domestic incident between george zimmerman and his estranged wife shellie is on hold. neither side is pressing charges. and an ipad with potential video evidence is damaged. >> shellie said she walked around videotaping george in the household during that confrontation they had in that household. that is what she is saying is on that ipad. >> the dispute took place on monday days after shellie zimmerman filed for divorce. police say it could take weeks to recover the video from the

in haiti, electricity is rare, especially since that devastating earthquake more than three years ago. only 25% of haiti's people have access to the national power grid. that leaves more than 7 million in the dark. as jeff glor saw on a recent visit, one possible solution is getting a lot of attention. >> reporter: at wilmington juice house there's always a light on. a small solar lamp lets his daughter study late at night. he says he used candles until a fire burned his house. he told us the solar lamp makes the family safer and gives off more light. the lamps come through a money
