o', my god, this thing is getting really wide, jon. achaotic outbreak in the midwest. at least six are killed and thousands without power as the late-season storm caught a lot of people off guard. >> we ran as fast as we could. the tonight was right behind us. we stood in the hallway and held each ore, it was that quick. devastation in russia. there are no survivors after a jetliner crashes during a landing attempt. get out of the vehicle. >> and caught on camera. police have their hands full when they stop a mother with a handful of kids. for monday, november 18th, 2013. captioning funded by cbs good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning searches are under way across the midwest as a deadly storm system spawn dozens of tornadoes and severe weather. severe weather warnings are in place along the mid-atlantic coastline. at least six people were killed in the midwest. the storm prediction center says 81 tornados were reported. most in illinois. and hundreds of thousands are without power. the storm eventually slammed into chicago where fans watching the bears/ravens game at soldier field were told to evacuate. >> go to the nearest covered concourse everyone. everyone must leave their seats. >> the game resumed after a two-hour delay. now, the town of washington, illinois, just east of peoria may have been hardest hit.

hundreds of homes were destriend bigad shaban is in washington. bigad, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, group to be with you. until this twister touched down this was an ought mottive repair shop. the destruction, in fact, in parts of washington is so extreme it's hard to distinguish one mountain of debris from the next. firefighters in washington, illinois, searched through rubble, lacking for survivors of a massive tornado that leveled the town. spray painted xs signify a home or car has been searched and is clear. this is just one of an estimated 80 twisters reported on sunday. most were in illinois. michael pedune saw a twister headed for his home. >> i grabbed my daughter and ran. everybody is safe. the rest is replaceable. >> reporter: hundreds of homes

in washington were destroyed and officials instituted a dust-to-dawn curfew because of gas leaks and downed power lines. it also struck the town of pekin 18 miles away. jeff said he barely escaped. >> my son said there it is. in a matter of seconds it was right on top of us. we hutled in the house and before we knew it, it was gone, it's that fast. >> reporter: the national weather service indicates a tornado. an elderly man and his sister died when the twister hit their farmhouse. heavy rain, hail, and high winds contributed to damage in at least seven states. and it was illinois that certainly got the brunt of those storms. and now it's still unclear, though, anne-marie, because of spotty cell service and communication, just really difficult how many people were actually hurt and whether that dealt toll will continue to

rise. >> bigad shaban in washington, illinois. thank you very much. the storm exploded when the winter jet stream skbloeded. take a look. today those temperatures are cooling off by as much as 20 degrees in some areas to a more seasonable level. two minors were killed in a mining accident in southwestern colorado. the mine is located about 300 miles southwest of denver. the miners were trapped underground sunday morning following what's described as a powder smoke incident. the "denver post" reports they died of carbon monoxide poisoning. 20 others were injured. mine officials don't know what caused the accident. the mine produces gold, silver, and sulfides. and 50 people were killed when a russian airliner crashed as it was trying to land in central russia. the boeing 737 was on route from moscow to the city of kazan last night. now, the crew was making a

according to "washington post," as many as one in five applicants may not be able to sign up on line. government officials told the white house they'll be satisfied if 80% of the applicants get enrolled through the website. republican senator john barra o barrasso. >> it's time to start ore. it's broken. it's failed the american people because they're losing their insurance. >> reporter: over the last ral weeks people across the country have received notice their health insurance policies would be canceled as a direct result of the affordable care act. house republicans proposed a fix. 39 democrats voted with republicans to pass the bill. according to cbs news' estimates, 31% of those democrats are expected to be in competitive races or potentially competitive races in the next year's term elections but nancy pelosi said the vote wasn't a sign of a party rift. >> no, that isn't a question of the democrats defecting from the president. it's not even about the

"forbes" magazine is for sale. forbes media, the family owned

company that publishes the magazine, says it's exploring its options after several potential buyers have expressed interests. behind the front winds will remain strong with gusts up to 60 miles an hour possible. there will be lingering showers in the south from the carolinas to florida, and expect more rain and mountain snow in the northwest. in sports now, the nfl's last undefeated team goes down on "sunday night football." the kansas city chiefs can't keep up with the denver broncos' high-powered phones. peyton manning throws for a touchdown while montee ball rushes for two scores. denver hands the chiefs their first loss of the season, 27-17. both teams have matching 9-1 records. meanwhile, the seattle seahawks hold the best record in the nfc. marshawn lynch run for three touchdowns as the seahawks dismantle the vikings. seattle is now 9-1. and the new york giants are back in the hunt. after starting the season 0-6, the giants win their fourth straight game. new york knocks off a struggling green bay squad, 27-13. and the packers have now lost three in a row.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. washington, d.c., will be sunny today with a high of 67. atlanta and st. louis as well. denver, sunny and 61. but seattle can expect rain with a high of 51. two buffalo bills fans were injured on sunday when one fell from a stadium deck onto the other. the unidentified man slides down the railing. he loses his blarngs tips backward, and plummets to the seat below. the man who fell suffered a shoulder injury. the man he landed on sustained a head injury. what started as a routine traffic stop in new mexico turned into a high-speed chase involving a minivan filled with children. at one point an officer fired aet the van. as don dahler reports, it was all caught on tape. >> reporter: oriana farrell from tennessee was pulled over in new mexico for speeding.

the unidentified officer tells her she can pay the ticket or appear in court. he told cbs news she declined both options. the officer goes back to his cruiser to make arrangements to take her before a judge. farrell has other ideas. she drives away. the officer chases her down and pulls her over again. >> get out of the vehicle. get out of the vehicle right now! >> reporter: but farrell refuses. her five children inside the minivan are screaming. her 14-year-old son gets out but changes his mind when the officer draws his taser. >> you're already facing evasion charges. you ran away from me. >> i didn't run away. did you see my children? >> reporter: finally farrell agrees to get out and talk, but not for long. >> turn around and face your vehicle. ma'am, listen to me. >> her 14-year-old son gets out again and rushes the officer. he pulls out his taser again and the boy retreated.

the officer tries to get the boy out. other officers arrive on the scene. farrell drives off again, weaving around police officers. despite the fact the minivan is full of children, the other officer fires at it. no one is hit. a four-minute high-speed chase ensues. at one point the minivan heads the wrong way into traffic. finally farrell pulls over in front of a hotel and surrenders. she and her son are arrested. both are now back in tennessee and are facing serious charges. don dahler, cbs news, new york. well, the pilot of a small plane is protesting a big bill from the pennsylvania turnpike commission. in august brian nicholson was forced to land his vintage plane on a highway when a piece of the propeller broke off. now he owes nearly $3,000. they say the bill is for man hours and it's no different than one that goes to car and truck drivers. coming up after your local news on "cbs this morning," the latest from washington, illinois, on the deadly tornado outbreak. i'm anne-marie green. this is the "cbs morning news."

italy's mt. etna puts on a dramatic show over the weekend. an eruption lit up the night sky saturday into sunday. it sent lava fountains hundreds of feet into the air. no evacuations were ordered, but the ash crowd disrupted air travel. aetna is europe's most active volcano with 16 eruptions this year. and britain's prince harry left london last night to get ready for a trek to antarctica. he'll be joined by wounded servicemen and women on charity race to the bottom of the earth. charlie d'agata met with some of the team members. >> reporter: the team set off from london's hecht rowe airport with the warmth of one hug that might just last all the way to the south pole. prince harry slipped in through

on southbound 880 at oak street. chp says a bmw was driving at speeds up to 100 miles per hour in the northbound direction around 1:30 this morning. that car lost control, hit the center divide, flipped several times and then landed on a crv in the southbound lanes. all drivers were killed. elizabeth wenger with the impact the accident is having on the morning commute. >> it's slow but it's still early but only one lane is getting by now the number 4 lane. lanes 1 through 3 are blocked. slowing from 980. southbound 880 traffic alert in effect between broadway and 16th. we spoke to chp a few minutes ago and they are hoping to have this picked up by 5:00 this morning. that's the estimated eto. so we'll continue to watch it. in the meantime, we have a news crew heading to the scene and that southbound 880 drive from the macarthur maze to 238 is
