for monday, november 18th, 2013. captioning funded by cbs good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning searches are under way across the midwest as a deadly storm system spawn dozens of tornadoes and severe weather. severe weather warnings are in place along the mid-atlantic coastline. at least six people were killed in the midwest. the storm prediction center says 81 tornados were reported. most in illinois. and hundreds of thousands are without power. the storm eventually slammed into chicago where fans watching the bears/ravens game at soldier field were told to evacuate. >> go to the nearest covered concourse everyone. everyone must leave their seats. >> the game resumed after a two-hour delay. now, the town of washington, illinois, just east of peoria may have been hardest hit.

hundreds of homes were destriend bigad shaban is in washington. bigad, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, group to be with you. until this twister touched down this was an ought mottive repair shop. the destruction, in fact, in parts of washington is so extreme it's hard to distinguish one mountain of debris from the next. firefighters in washington, illinois, searched through rubble, lacking for survivors of a massive tornado that leveled the town. spray painted xs signify a home or car has been searched and is clear. this is just one of an estimated 80 twisters reported on sunday. most were in illinois. michael pedune saw a twister headed for his home. >> i grabbed my daughter and ran. everybody is safe. the rest is replaceable. >> reporter: hundreds of homes

in washington were destroyed and officials instituted a dust-to-dawn curfew because of gas leaks and downed power lines. it also struck the town of pekin 18 miles away. jeff said he barely escaped. >> my son said there it is. in a matter of seconds it was right on top of us. we hutled in the house and before we knew it, it was gone, it's that fast. >> reporter: the national weather service indicates a tornado. an elderly man and his sister died when the twister hit their farmhouse. heavy rain, hail, and high winds contributed to damage in at least seven states. and it was illinois that certainly got the brunt of those storms. and now it's still unclear, though, anne-marie, because of spotty cell service and communication, just really difficult how many people were actually hurt and whether that dealt toll will continue to

rise. >> bigad shaban in washington, illinois. thank you very much. the storm exploded when the winter jet stream skbloeded. take a look. today those temperatures are cooling off by as much as 20 degrees in some areas to a more seasonable level. two minors were killed in a mining accident in southwestern colorado. the mine is located about 300 miles southwest of denver. the miners were trapped underground sunday morning following what's described as a powder smoke incident. the "denver post" reports they died of carbon monoxide poisoning. 20 others were injured. mine officials don't know what caused the accident. the mine produces gold, silver, and sulfides. and 50 people were killed when a russian airliner crashed as it was trying to land in central russia. the boeing 737 was on route from moscow to the city of kazan last night. now, the crew was making a

second landing attempt when the twin engine jet hit the run way, crashed and burned. everyone on board was killed. the crash is under investigation. a global effort is slowly picking up steam in the philippines where a massive typhoon killed nearly 4,000 peep and displayed 4 million others basics, how long can

the unidentified officer tells her she can pay the ticket or appear in court. he told cbs news she declined both options. the officer goes back to his cruiser to make arrangements to take her before a judge. farrell has other ideas. she drives away. the officer chases her down and pulls her over again. >> get out of the vehicle. get out of the vehicle right now! >> reporter: but farrell refuses. her five children inside the minivan are screaming. her 14-year-old son gets out but changes his mind when the officer draws his taser. >> you're already facing evasion charges. you ran away from me. >> i didn't run away. did you see my children? >> reporter: finally farrell agrees to get out and talk, but not for long. >> turn around and face your vehicle. ma'am, listen to me. >> her 14-year-old son gets out again and rushes the officer. he pulls out his taser again and the boy retreated.

the officer tries to get the boy out. other officers arrive on the scene. farrell drives off again, weaving around police officers. despite the fact the minivan is full of children, the other officer fires at it. no one is hit. a four-minute high-speed chase ensues. at one point the minivan heads the wrong way into traffic. finally farrell pulls over in front of a hotel and surrenders. she and her son are arrested. both are now back in tennessee and are facing serious charges. don dahler, cbs news, new york. well, the pilot of a small plane is protesting a big bill from the pennsylvania turnpike commission. in august brian nicholson was forced to land his vintage plane on a highway when a piece of the propeller broke off. now he owes nearly $3,000. they say the bill is for man hours and it's no different than one that goes to car and truck drivers. coming up after your local news on "cbs this morning," the latest from washington, illinois, on the deadly tornado outbreak. i'm anne-marie green. this is the "cbs morning news."
