this is the "cbs morning news" for thursday, november 21st, 2013. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, congressman trey radel says he let down his country, his family, and his constituents. radel pleaded guilty to drug possession but is not resigning from congress. instead he's taking a year off effective immediately. susan mcginnis from washington. susan, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. radel said he wants to continue serving his country. on wednesday he said he struggles with drugs and alcohol abuse and says he sees this charge as an opportunity to get help. late last night congressman trey radel apologized for his cocaine arrest and announced he's taking a leave of absence to seek treatment for substance abuse. >> i do believe in faith, forgiveness, and redemption, and i hope to come out of this a stronger man, a better man for

all of you. >> radel was less talk aive earlier in the day as he was led into a washington, d.c., court to face a charge. he pleaded guilty to buying cocaine from an undercover officer. he' he'll con contribute $250 to a compensation fund and be on probation for a year. >> he's destroying his own family. if he's destroying his own family, what does he care about us? >> i'm trey radel and this is our baby and my wife jude. >> he says she's at home caring for their young child. >> she's stuck with me and will continue to stick with me. she is my rock. >> radel said he'll donate his salary to charity during his absence.

anne-marie? >> susan mcginnis in washington. a delegation of state insurance commission mers told president obama to tell people they could keep their insurance plans for a year could result in higher premiums. meanwhile a poll shows there's sinking support for the president. just 32% of those asked approve of how the president is handling health care. and mr. obama's approval rating is 37%. the lowest of his presidency. a suspected u.s. droeb drone strike killed six pakistanis. the strike was in northwest pakistan but outside the remote tribal region the drones usually strike. the afghans attacked were a members of a group, a feared militant group and a taliban ally. this morning in afghanistan, a 3,000-member council of elders

is considering a proposed security pac between the u.s. and afghanistan. it would frame the future u.s. involvement in afghanistan. charlie d'agata is in london with the details. charlie, good morning. >> good morning to you, anne-marie. afghan president hamid karzai addressed them early will this morning the way we expect the p out in afghanistan, especially in front of a council of tribal elders who know better. they said they should support the security pac. 9,000 troops with an additional number o nato troops making up maybe 15,000. the agreement gives jurisdiction

to the troops. they're scheduled to meet in five days. whatever decision they come to will come to the afghan par lament and, of course, signed off by the obama administration. >> thank you, charlie. back in this country now, starting june 1st, same-sex couples can apply for a marriage license in illinois. yesterday illinois became the 16th state to legalize the same-sex marriage. they signed the legislation into law on a desk once used by abraham lincoln. the debt paced the desk on valentine's day. illinois legalized same-sex marriages back on march 11th. alice sis christoforous is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, alexis. >> good morning, anne-marie. there are indications that the federal reserve may be closer to scaling back its economic stimulus program. minutes of the fed's meeting

last month were released yesterday and members agreed they would like to start reducing their bond purchases in the coming months if the job market improves. the bond purchases are intended to keep long-term borrowing rates low, but the fed still intends to keep short-term rates low. the fed's stimulus program had been a key driver of this year's stock market surge and after the fed minutes were released stocks fell. the dow jones industrial average ended the day 66 points lower. the nasdaq composite lost 10. slow manufacturing growth in china sent asian markets lower. hong kong's hang seng lost half a percent and norfolk owe's nikkei bucked the trend jumping 2%. two trade groups representing u.s. and europe. back in april the collapse of a factory complex killed workers and a factory fire killed over 100 workers. it supplies such retailers, the

gap, walmart, and h&m. the government is requiring that all new tour buses and buses that carry passengers on scheduled routes between cities have seat belts. the national highway traffic safety administration says an average of 21 people in those buss are killed each year in those accidents. it's believed the accident could reduce the number of deaths in half. and there was encouraging news on retail sales. the commerce department shows that retail sales rose 4%. this is make-or-break time for retailers. sales in november and december count up to 40% of revenue for store operators. and about a third of americans say they will do some holiday shopping over the thanksgiving weekend. black friday remains the most popular day to shop, but a cbs news poll finds 76% of americans should be closed on thanksgiving. just 2% of those asked say they

to make an evvacuatioevacuation. the evacuation slide burst open inside the plane pinning a flight attendant. a flight attendant was able to puncture the slide freeing the trapped man. chip reid reports. >> reporter: it began as a routine flight as jetblue 1256 tyke off from ft. myers, florida, heading for boston with 73 passengers and four crew members on board. but about ten minutes into the flight suddenly the emergency evacuation slide at the left front of the plane just behind the cockpit deployed, expanding across the aisle into the front alley. an emergency was declared and the plane was diverted and laddet at yornd international airport and passengers landed safely through the rear door. the widely used passenger jet was taken out of service for inspection. the national transportation safety board is investigating. the sudden deployment of an evacuation slide inside an airplane during flight is rare but not unprecedented.

in fact, in july 2008 it happened inside then senator barack obama's presidential campaign plane. no one was injured. chip reid, cbs news, washington. amtrak is apologizing after a train got lost outside philadelphia. the train with 130 passengers left philadelphia for new york last thursday. a mechanical problem forced the crew to move the engine from the back to the front. they lost their way trying to turn around. the passengers did eventually make it to new york. amtrak calls it a rare mistake. and japan is growing, literally. the eruption of an under sea volcano created a new island on wednesday. a plume of smoke and ash billowed into the sky on the tiny land mass. experts say it's possible the new island would sink back into the sea. japan is made up of an estimated 6,000 islands. straight ahead, a-rod's anger. the yankee star storms out of a

he said he will not return to the hearings. in other baseball news the texas rangers and detroit tigers have agreed to a blockbuster trade. the tigers are sending first baseman prince fielder to texas in change for ian kinsler. they signed him to a nine-year, $214 million contract two years ago. kinsler just completed the first season of a 5-year, $75 million deal. detroit is also sending $30 million to texas, but the move could end up saving the tigers $75 million in the long run. and the 2014 olympics are once again in doubt for lindsey vonn. the gold medalist partially tore a ligament in her knee when she crashed during training run this week. it's the same knee she had surgically repaired nine months ago. vonn's publicist says she'll rest and then go into physical therapy. in the nba, soent scores a win. tony parker scores 19 points as the spurs hand boston their fourth straight loss.
