period for nelson mandela is over. this morning in the capital of pretoria, a 30-foot steel statue of the former president was unveiled in front of the union buildings where his presidential offices were and today also happens to be south africa's day of reconciliation, a national holiday that came into effect in 1994 at the end of apartheid. yesterday more than 4,000 people gathered in mandela's native village to pay their final respects. allen pizzey has that report from qunu. >> reporter: transported on a gun carriage over the land he loved most, nelson mandela was eulogized, remembered, mourned, and finally laid to rest. he had to be buried at midday so many of the 4 and a half thousand invited guests had started traveling before dawn. 95 candles, were for each year

of mandela's remarkable life formed a coffin behind his coffin which sat on two skins of cattle that represents wealth here. tradition played a role in these proceedings. speaking on behalf of the family, chief ngangonhlaba matanzima said mandela was going home to rest with his forefathers, adding, we thank them for lending us sch an icon. it was empty of the battalion of zulu warriors. they weren't on the official program, so they took over a nearby hillside. the most personal memorial was that of ahmed kathrada, a prisoner who was next to nelson mandela. >> we can salute you for fighting freedom to the end. farewe farewell, my dear brother, my mentor, my leader. >> reporter: the lowering of the casket was kept quiet at the request of the family and the leaders were speaking to

mandela's body. a sixth generation, leila hartford held her own reflection of mandela. >> think my entire life is because of this man, everything i've experienced would have been different. >> reporter: it would be hard to find a south african of any race or age who doesn't harbor a version of that. in a 1994 documentary about his life, nelson mandela said, when a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country, he can rest in piece. it's fair to say that by his very life, nelson mandela wrote his own obituary. allen pizzey cbs news, qunu, south africa. iran's foreign minister says his country will continue nuclear negotiations despite pulling its national representatives from talks in switzerland. the iranians were protesting actions by the u.s. government for sanctions it says violated iran. iran's foreign minister told

2007. >> we know he's not incarcerated in iran. >> how do you know that? >> if he is, he's not incarcerated by the government, and i believe the government runs a pretty much good control of the country. >> reporter: the white house has always maintained levinson was a private citizen on a business trip at the time of his disappearance, but an "associated press" report reveals he was actually working for the cia. secretary of state john kerry says the u.s. brings up levinson's state in every discussion it has. kerry denies the family's suggestion that the u.s. government isn't doing enough to find levinson. >> to suggest that we've abandoned him or anybody has abandoned him is incorrect. we're working on several processes that i'm not at liberty to talk about. >> reporter: senator john mccain says the obama administration needs to be more forthcoming. >> the cia did not tell the truth to america about levinson. >> reporter: he's convinced iran

"60 minutes" was granted unprecedented evidence and they asked general alexander about the perception that the agency is listening in on america's phone calls and looking at their e-mails. >> so you understand then there might be a little confusion among americans who read in the newspaper that the nsa has vacuumed up the telephone records of every man, woman, and child in the united states for a

number of years, that sounds like spying on americans. >> right. and that's wrong. that's absolutely wrong. >> you don't hear the calls. >> you don't hear the call. >> you don't see the name. >> you don't see the names. >> you just see this number called that number. >> that this number, the two/from number, the duration of the call, and the date-time group. that's all we get. and all you can do is tell the fbi that number is talking to somebody who is very bad, you ought to go look at it. >> you can see miller's full report on cbsnews.com. and on sunday colorado's governor john hickenlooper visited claire davis at the hospital and asked the nation to pray for her. the high school in centennial where she was shot on friday will remain closed at least through this week. carter evans report. >> reporter: friends prayed for the recovery of 17-year-old claire davis saturday night. she's in critical condition after being shot point blank at her colorado high school on friday. arapahoe county sheriff grayson robinson.

>> she is an innocent victim, and i believe she was probably in the wrong place at the wrong time. >> reporter: davis was sitting with a friend when investigators say 18-year-old karl pierson walked into the school with a shotgun and ammo belt strapped to his chest. he also had a machete and three molotov cocktails. >> it's my opinion this individual would not have walked into the school with those items if he had not intended to injure rounds of people. >> reporter: he never got that chance. the entire incident lasted 1 minute and 20 seconds. pierson lit one of the molotov cocktail and fired three rounds of shots into the library. investigators say a sheriff's deputy assigned to the school rushed to the library where pierson fired one final shot to kill himself. >> the shooter was very, very well aware that the deputy

sheriff was in his immediate area. >> reporter: students began evacuating immediately after the first shots were fired. a demonstration of lessons learned following the 1999 shooting at columbine just eight miles away. colorado governor john hickenlooper told "face the nation" those lessons saved lives. >> having had those episodes in the past, we do have, you know, strategies and protocols in place. we had a deputy sheriff in the building who immediately ran toward the trouble. >> reporter: the school also initiated an immediate lockdown of the facility. >> the quick response by our resource officer caused the children and the staff of this facility to be safe. >> reporter: the chaos on friday has given way to quiet tribute. students will be allowed back on monday just to retrieve their belongings. carter evans, cbs news, los angeles. coming up on the "morning news," the christmas crush. the post office will be packed today as we try to mail our cards and packages before the holiday. this is the "cbs morning news."

china's first ever moon rover is making tracks on the lunar surface this morning. last night "jade rabbit" rolled about ten yards from the vehicle carrying it there. they took photos of each other. the weekend touchdown was the first soft landing on the moon in 37 years. china plans another lunar mission in 2017. and on the "cbs moneywatch," expect long lines at the post office today and big plans for a trio of ave tatar sequels. wendy gillette is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, wendy. >> good morning, anne-marie. the united states postal office expect today to be the busiest day of the year. more than 600 million pieces are expected to be processed today,

and 6 million customers are expected to visit nationwide. if you can't do it today you have until december 20th first class cards and letters if you expect them to arrive by christmas. december 21st is the deadline for priority and 22nd for priority. asian markets finished lowered despite upbeat confidences in tokyo's manufacturers. tokyo's nikkei dropped 1.5%. hong kong's hang seng lost half a percent. in this country, the markets will be keeping a close eye on the federal reserve. it meets tomorrow and wednesday to discuss scaling back its stimulus package. the fed could move as early as this week or wait several months. last week the dow jones industrial lost nearly 265 points. the nasdaq composite was down 61 points. director james cameron said he'll make three sequels to the sci-fi blockbuster "avatar." it's won three academy awards and it's the highest grossing film industry taking in $2.8 billion.

he hopes to shoot all three sequels at one time. he hopes to release the first sequel in time for christmas 2016. at the box office this weekend hobbits ruled. and win 37-36. romo answering questions after the game about the late interception. >> it's the wrong call that we have. you know, we'll have it up three to five, six times a game. you throw the ball because you get a bad look into the run. at that specific time obviously when i look back now, you should run the ball because you throw an interception. >> after the cowboys fell behind, romo tossed another interception, sealing the win for green bay. pittsburgh's antonio brown returns a punt 67 yards for a touchdown. and adding insult to injury, kevin huber takes a devastating block for terence garvin. huber is knocked out of the game with a broken jaw, and pittsburgh k.o.s the game.

alison harmelin takes a look back at his distinguished career. >> reporter: peter o'toole earned his first oscar nomination and became an international star for portraying a british soldier in the epic film "lawrence of arabia." o'toole's prolific career began on the brit in stalk. from there he embraced hollywood in all of its glamor and gluttony and was known as a hard drinking hell-raiser in the 1960s. he starred with richard burton in "becket." the actor teamed with katharine hepburn in "lion of winter." >> reporter: and he played a british school teacher in "good-bye, mr. chips." in 2006 the self-effacing actor signed his name in comment at gram's chinese thoughter. and eight academy award nominations later he never took home an oscar when in 2003 the

academy gave him an honorary award for his body of work. >> yes. very good films, i think. >> reporter: the celebrated son of great britain was celebrated by millions around the globe. quote, my thoughts are with peter o'toole's family and friends. his performance in my favorite film "lawrence of arabia" was stunning. the legendary actor was 81. alison harmelin, cbs news, new york. actress joan fontaine rose to hollywood star dom in the 1940s. in "suspicion" alfred hitchcock cast her in a role of a timid wife opposite cary grant. she earned an oscar and topped her sister who was also nominated. she appeared in more than 30 movies and dozens of stage productions. fontaine died at her home in mchlt carmel, california, on sunday. she was 96 years old. coming up on "cbs this morning," gayle king in south

morning's top stories.k at this south africa unveiled a giant statue of nelson mandela this morning outside the union buildings in pretoria. the country's black president was laid to rest on sunday following a state funeral. the burial mark the end of a ten-day mourning period. mandela died on december 5th at the age of 95. >> and it is crunch time when it comes to christmas shipping. today the postal service says it expects to handle more than 600 million pieces of mail. that makes today the busiest day of the year. this week an unusual raffle drawing will held in paris and the prize will delay any art lover, and as charlie d'agata reports, it doesn't cost much to take part. >> reporter: it's a rare opportunity for mere mortals to snap up a masterpiece, pick up a picasso for about $130 and a bit of luck.
