period for nelson mandela is over. this morning in the capital of pretoria, a 30-foot steel statue of the former president was unveiled in front of the union buildings where his presidential offices were and today also happens to be south africa's day of reconciliation, a national holiday that came into effect in 1994 at the end of apartheid. yesterday more than 4,000 people gathered in mandela's native village to pay their final respects. allen pizzey has that report from qunu. >> reporter: transported on a gun carriage over the land he loved most, nelson mandela was eulogized, remembered, mourned, and finally laid to rest. he had to be buried at midday so many of the 4 and a half thousand invited guests had started traveling before dawn. 95 candles, were for each year

of mandela's remarkable life formed a coffin behind his coffin which sat on two skins of cattle that represents wealth here. tradition played a role in these proceedings. speaking on behalf of the family, chief ngangonhlaba matanzima said mandela was going home to rest with his forefathers, adding, we thank them for lending us sch an icon. it was empty of the battalion of zulu warriors. they weren't on the official program, so they took over a nearby hillside. the most personal memorial was that of ahmed kathrada, a prisoner who was next to nelson mandela. >> we can salute you for fighting freedom to the end. farewe farewell, my dear brother, my mentor, my leader. >> reporter: the lowering of the casket was kept quiet at the request of the family and the leaders were speaking to

2007. >> we know he's not incarcerated in iran. >> how do you know that? >> if he is, he's not incarcerated by the government, and i believe the government runs a pretty much good control of the country. >> reporter: the white house has always maintained levinson was a private citizen on a business trip at the time of his disappearance, but an "associated press" report reveals he was actually working for the cia. secretary of state john kerry says the u.s. brings up levinson's state in every discussion it has. kerry denies the family's suggestion that the u.s. government isn't doing enough to find levinson. >> to suggest that we've abandoned him or anybody has abandoned him is incorrect. we're working on several processes that i'm not at liberty to talk about. >> reporter: senator john mccain says the obama administration needs to be more forthcoming. >> the cia did not tell the truth to america about levinson. >> reporter: he's convinced iran

>> she is an innocent victim, and i believe she was probably in the wrong place at the wrong time. >> reporter: davis was sitting with a friend when investigators say 18-year-old karl pierson walked into the school with a shotgun and ammo belt strapped to his chest. he also had a machete and three molotov cocktails. >> it's my opinion this individual would not have walked into the school with those items if he had not intended to injure rounds of people. >> reporter: he never got that chance. the entire incident lasted 1 minute and 20 seconds. pierson lit one of the molotov cocktail and fired three rounds of shots into the library. investigators say a sheriff's deputy assigned to the school rushed to the library where pierson fired one final shot to kill himself. >> the shooter was very, very well aware that the deputy
