austin, texas, weren't there to buy gifts. >> there's a policy number and then there's a member i.d. >> reporter: they were there to purchase health insurance through a federal exchange with the help of staffers through a local nonprofit. the group insure central texas signed up more people on monday than all of november. >> the past few days it's been very busy. we'll probably surpass the day. >> reporter: there was a mad dash in virginia and on online. more than 1 million people have visited healthcare.gov. by 5 p.m., about five times more than last monday. some users were told to wait here when they tried to logon or to read their e-mail so they could be notified when demand flowed. the administration announced the 24-hour enrollment extension at midday but warned you should not wait if you're aiming to get coverage january 1st. you should try to sign up today. complicating matters, some of

the 14 states that run their own exchanges announced their deadlines would not be slipping. insurance companies have already warned it will be difficult to process all those new applications by january 1st. and that's the next big test for obamacare, will people who sign up now be able to use their coverage smoothly come january 1st. those who don't need coverage right away will have several months to sign up. open enrollment runs through the end of march. nancy cordes, cbs news, washington. well, target faces new problems following the massive theft of customer debit and credit card information. the retailer is the subject of lawsuits and a justice department investigation. as bigad shaban reports target is working hard to gain back customer trust. >> if target can get hacked, i feel like any store can get hacked. >> reporter: tracy rhodes is changing the way she shops at target after the retail giant revealed a security breach could

leave as many as 40 million customers vulnerable to theft. >> i got to the register, and i pulled out my card to put it in the machine. then i thought about it, and i took it out. and i cancelled the whole transaction. i just used cash. >> reporter: other consumers appear to be avoiding the retailer. foot traffic at target stores fell an estimated 5% this past weekend, compared to the same time last year. >> thank you for your patience. >> reporter: target's president and ceo took to the website to apologize to customers. he said while hackers did get customer names and credit card numbers and expiration dates, he believes they were unable to collect pin numbers. that's no consolation for college junior erica aiken who had $1200 stolen from her account. >> there were six transactions from target harrisburg, pennsylvania which i'm not in harrisburg. >> reporter: class action lawsuits have been filed in several states, seeking millions

of dollars in damages. bigad shaban, cbs news, los angeles. on the "cbs moneywatch," holiday shoppers lose steam, plus hyundai to pay millions in a gas mileage settlement. alexis christoforous is there at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, alexis. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. it's certainly been a mediocre december at best. according to shopper track sales dropped 3% since last year. and the first week of the month, sales dropped about 3% again. but in november, sales rose, almost 3.5%. we should note the numbers don't include online sales. asian markets are higher ahead of the holidays. tokyo's nikkei finished a fraction ahead of six years. china's shanghai composite added a fraction and hong kong's hang seng is closed for a holiday. a half day here on wall street as traders get ready for christmas and others smiling on their day off.

a santa claus rally yesterday sent the markets into record territory again. the dow rose 73 points to a new high. the nasdaq jumped 44. a christmas gift for home owners. the new chief who oversees fannie mae and freddie mac said he'll postpone and may even cancel a fee that would add millions to the cost of mortgages. housing experts say those fees would have been passed on to borrowers with less than perfect credit history. hyundai and kia will spend almost $400 million to settle charges they overstated gas mileage. last year, the epa found the automaker's inflated fuel economy numbers on 13 models. so instead of collecting a monthly fee, hyundai owners now have the option of taking a lump sum of $350. kia owners, about 660 bucks. and one of the most popular gifts this holiday is audio equipment. sales of sound bars, you know, those long thin speakers, have grown 80%. wireless speakers have nearly

quadrupled. according to the research group npd, headphones and audio equipment make up 17% of all sales. and anne-marie, those headphones are actually hip again. >> they are. i know when it comes to the ear buds, i'm constantly replacing them. my dog thinks they're chew toys and if i leave them on the floor, they're done for. >> i'm going with the big cam. >> exactly. >> alexis christoforous, thank you so much. christmas eve travelers from the midwest into the northeast face headaches this morning. roads remain icy following an icy storm that swept across the country. utility crews are racing to return power to hundreds of thousands of families for christmas gatherings. one vermont resident said it's like camping in the living room. >> i went and bought a space heater and we've got some candles. i don't mind being in the dark so much. it was just the heat. there was no heat. >> at least 11 deaths are blamed

on the storm that started saturday and lingered into late monday. more than 300 flights were cancelled on monday. another 7,000 were delayed. nasa is preparing for a space walk this morning to fix a cooling system aboard the international space station. it is the second and hopefully final space walk to replace the system. astronauts will be keeping close tabs on their space suits, though. susan mcginnis is some washington. susan, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. this christmas eve space walk is scheduled for 7:10 eastern time this morning, these two astronauts were already out there for about 5 1/2 hours on saturday. nasa is hoping, at least, today they'll be able to finish up. nasa astronaut rick mastracchio and michael hopkins are preparing for their second space walk in four days to repair a restretch-ize ammonia pump on the international space station. >> during the first space walk

they got the pump out. during the second space walk, they're going to put a new one in and that should do the trick. >> reporter: the pump is a critical part of the cooling system. it broke down december 11th, triggering the space lock to repair the system as quickly as possible. >> they expect failure over the life of a program going on this long. the trick is to be prepared for when it happens and for the crew to be able to go and make the repairs themselves. >> reporter: today's walk was originally scheduled for yesterday, but it had to be delayed after a small amount of water got into mass trok mastracchio's sued during a mission. >> they put that new suit together, tested it. everybody's quite pleased with how that is. they don't think they'll have any problems for this space walk. >> reporter: last july, an italian astronaut nearly drowned when a water leak flooded his helmet. and mission control expects no problem with the contact of the international space station and santa claus, anne-marie. >> that's good news.

members of the punk band pussy riot reunited today. they shook hands at an airport in sentra russia. the two remain defiant and say they will now fight to change the way women are treated in jail. the women had spent nearly two years in jail for staging a protest at a moscow cathedral. still ahead, sports and a remarkable turn of events in the candlestick finale.

returned an interception 89 yards for a touchdown giving the 49ers a 34-24 victory. and it's reported that dallas quarterback tony romo will miss the rest of the season. romo was apparently hurt in sunday's game against the redskins. espn says romo has a herniated disk and needed surgery. the dallas coach jason garrett said romo will be evaluated on a daily basis. in the nba, phoenix took advantage of an injury-plagued lakers, green hit a three-pointer and miles plumlee grabbed points to go for 17 points as the sun easily handled l.a. 117-90. and denver's steven curry had 24 points and david lee with the nuggets 89-81. it was the nuggets fourth consecutive loss. and in hockey, thanks to unintended help, the buffalo sabres got a 2-1 win over the

have another day to sign up. the obama administration says the deadline was extended to accommodate a last-minute rush. and retailers are facing a disappointing holiday shopping season after a strong november start, instore sales were down. online remain a bright spot. the family of a california girl on life support is expected to go back to court today. they want another medical evaluation for 13-year-old jahi mcmath. she was declared brain-dead more than a week ago by children's hospital in oakland following a tonsillectomy. her parents don't accept that. ology on monday, dozens of supporters turned out for a rally backing the family. and arms designer mikhail kalashnikov died in russia at 94. the rifle he invented the ak-47 has killed more people than any rifle in the world.

but kalashnikov was in trouble with the success of his creation. >> reporter: the ak-47 has long been a weapon of choice for fighters worldwide. developed in 1947, an estimated 100 million have been manufactured. they are cheap, powerful and virtually indestructible. famously working in extreme conditions where a more sophisticated m-16 has been known to jam. mikhail kalashnikov first wanted to make farm equipment, said he started designing guns to protect his homeland. when asked about the ak-47's use in war and terror attacks he had no regrets. he said it's the politicians who are to blame for failing to come to an agreement. and resulting in violence. mikhail kalashnikov was another. jeff glor, cbs news. utah has gone back to court to stop same-sex marriages in the state. in salt lake city and around the state, at least 700 same-sex couples have obtained marriage licenses since friday. that's when a federal judge struck down the state's ban.

more than conconvicts wind up back in prison after three more than 4 in 10 convicts wind up back in prison after three years after their release. jeff pegues tells us about boston. >> reporter: this gym san oasis for these young men, a place to move beyond their violent past. you got to watch your back? >> yeah, every day. >> reporter: 26-year-old angel lacourt grew up in the tough neighborhoods of boston and watched friends die here as a member of a street gang. >> these are five of my friends that have passed away. >> reporter: what was your mind-set then? >> it's either kill or be killed. that's just the way of the streets out here. >> reporter: eight years ago, lacourt was a star running back with a scholarship offer at boston college, but he fumbled that away, after shooting and wounding a man, landing him in

prison. when he got out, his probation officer sent him to inner city weight lifting. a program started by 30-year-old jon feinman with $10,000 of his own money. why lifting weights? >> weight training is kind of a common dominator. it's not the traditional mentor/student relationship. we're lift something weights. and it's how can you help outside of the gym. >> reporter: the inspiration was elexson hercules, a former gang member who feinman met. while working for an after-school program. elexson got his ged and a full-time job, but last year, he was killed by a rival gang member while walking home from a store. >> just because he got his life turned around doesn't mean the people they may have crosseded before are going to forgive them for it. >> reporter: feinman helps to find a safe place to take classes and look for johns. they come from neighborhoods
