her husband george. h w. bush. the wife of bush 41 has been in and out of the hospital for years. in 20710 she had a mystery illness and was brought to the same hospital. she's also had open heart surgery here. in 1989 she was diagnosed with a thyroid condition known as grave's disease. this time it's signs of pneumonia. no news on when she'll get out. president barack obama 's health care law takes effect this morning. one part is on old. an order last night to block original affiliated organizations to include birth control in their health insurance. the organization of catholic nuns in denver argues it violates religious rights. the government has until friday morning to respond. the family of a brain dead

california girl faces a new obstacle. they want to move her to oakland hospital before tuesday when the court says the breathing machine will be shut out. she can't be fitted with feeding tubes needed for the transfer. monday's fire involved 18 rail cars. the mayor is urging federal officials to improve safety regulations for shipping by train. much of the northern u.s. in a deep freeze. chicago got a blast of new year's eve snow. the storm reaches the east tomorrow. single digits in philadelphia new york and baltimore by friday. pope francis welcomed his first new year. he spoke from the the balcony saying we belong to the same human family. few hours earlier, he celebrated

mass. he says the world is feeling in his words, hunger and thirst for justice, peace, god. a scientist a board a stranded ship in antarctica says the weather is better and they expect to leave tomorrow. the passengers and crew stomped on ice making a flat landing surface for a rescue helicopter. the ship has been stuck since

u 2 front man bono is a global citizen concerned. he talked in may about how the problem of poverty can be beaten. >> why poverty. you could have chosen this disease or that did. you said that's the ultimate evil here. >> i have been working for

nelson mandela since i was about 18 years old. mandela says poverty is not a natural condition. it is man made. this is your chance to eradicate it. not pushing charity at all but actually injustice. i've always been on the justice tip rather than the charity one. >> what's the model to attack poverty and disease especially in africa? >> maybe not stressing the worthiness. maybe that will help. for example, the united states has a heroic story. you are way out in front in the fight against aids. 8 million people on antiviral drugs, most are a live because of americans.

do people know they're part of this incredible story? this is as heroic as your intervention in the second world war. no lives down just lives saved. >> you have to have a complex to do what you want to do. you've got to believe in yourself. you've got to believe it's possible. >> first of all, any one who finds their way to the front of a rock band standing in the spotlight on the center of stage definitely. the shy ones the, how did this happen to me ones. they're the very worst. i am a salesman. i come from a long line of traveling salespeople on my mother's side. i'm a group salesman of ideas. songs, melodies.

if i believe in them people get out on the streets, getting organized and fighting to eliminate extreme poverty is working. that's the mention because i believe if people understand it and see the successes of it then there will be more of us. i arrived as an activist you know social justice was part of u 2's agenda. >> u 2, how come it stayed on so long? what's the commitment that keeps it the way it is? the chemistry of a rock-n-roll band. >> you know you're as good as the arguments you get. i've got three of the greatest argument as on planet earth in this band.

they are people of great integrity. >> back in dublin, what makes a song writer? >> a song writer you know -- that is you know my drug of choice. >> that's the drug. >> that's the thing for me. i cannot believe you hear this melody line in your head and sort of take it down and find words for it and then arrangement for it. next thing you know you can be in a car in tokyo and it's on the radio. songs are everything to us in the band. people say your songs are like your children. no they're like your parents. really. they tell you what to do how to behave, how to misbehave, how to dress. everything you do is directed by the song. >> where are you in this new album?

there's a title that ten reasons to do something you threw out there that is not the title. >> somebody asked me what are you looking for? i said ten reasons to exist. i meant ten reasons to leave home and write good songs. does the world need another u 2 album, i'm not sure. there's so many out there. for sure they don't need hit unless it's great. >> do both these things commitment and making a better world, do they feed each other? >> there's also poetry. does that influence what you hope to do? >> it must. if music played a role to me it's kids listening to music. have been bob dylan, bob marley whispering words of descent and

encouragement in my ear. what i got from their music was a simple idea that the world outside the window was not fixed and it was more malable than everyone else is telling you. we're telling you that the world can be changed. and that you must change too. >> sometimes people say oh you know, they play imagine. that's the only song i don't like. they say what do you mean it's a hymn to universalism. >> i just don't like -- i love the band. he wrote the blueprint. but imagine wasn't one of them. i'm more of a actions, doing, building following my nose following curiosity to understand people and understand the world better and myself better.

happy new year and welcome back to "cbs this morning." coming up in this half hour a michigan couple turns the page on hard times. how 50"fifty shades of grey" helped them save their home. robert kennedy, one of them was our own, michelle miller. she joins us just ahead. cbs announcer jim nantz is one of the most familiar faces in sports. he's hosted everything from the super bowl to the masters but there's a siem of jim most fans don't know about. jeff glor is with us. good morning. >> norah, happy new year. it's not what you might guess.

i went up to my room and decided to write a story but one i could identify it with. >> she called "big girls do it better." her subject? >> her everyday story. we hit the publish button and sold 500 copies in 25 hours. we started writing like mad and i think in what like six months we put out 20 titles. >> reporter: 20 titles? >> yeah. i think we soured three times. >> reporter: they quickly earned them to meet their $1,200 monthly mortgage pages as their self-published romance ebooks went public. >> reporter: some of your books are steamy. >> they are. >> reporter: and you met in a

bible study group. >> they with. >> reporter: and were you concerned what they would -- >> they were. >> real life is messy. real life doesn't happen in biblical sense you know. people meet they swear, they make love they get angry at each other. >> right. we write that. >> reporter: with each book their sales have climbed higher. then this spring a romance called "falling into you," about a girl's first love who dies suddenly shot onto the "new york times" bestseller's live. she was out driving with her kids the day it hit number one on amazon. >> i was crying like hysterically. >> she called me crying uncontrollably. i told her to slow down. >> look at amazon. >> they have asked to use their pen names because they've been overwhelmed by success.

they've sold over a million ebooks. you did this by word of mouth. >> almost totally by word of mouth. >> they live in detroit. they did buy a new playset for their kids. >> that is one of the big things we splurged on. >> how often do you think of the moment you almost lost your house? >> a lot. i think every name when we go to bed and we're saying our prayers, that comes in our mind. we're very grateful and humble and know what a miracle this is. >> reporter: where do you go from this? >> that's a good question. >> write more books. >> that's a good statement. write more books. we're back in the basement. >> reporter: one of their books ended up on the top selling list. >> what happened after that. >> they got so much attention they figured they had to move.

birth control coverage. >> reporter: supreme court justice sonia sotomayor had a busy new year's eve. she dropped the same crystal ball in times square to welcome in 2014. >> three, two -- >> justice sotomayor delayed the requirement that religious organizations offer birth control ast as part oh their health insurance plans or face penalties. the request for the stay came from the little sisters of the poor home for the aged in denver which says it goes against their catholic beliefs. religious groups fought against offering contraceptive since it was first proposed as part of the affordable care act. the white house eventually offered a compromise which keeps the organizations from paying for the coverage. >> the insurance company, not the hospital not the charity, will be required to reach out and offer the woman contraceptive care free of charge. >> but lawyers for the little

sisters argue the change still requires the nuns to find an insurer who will provide contraceptive coverage, which they are opposed to. the obama administration has until 10:00 a.m. friday morning to respond to soettomayorsotomayor's order. more than 2 million americans will gain health n this morning when the affordable care act kicks in. that's how many people have enrolled in private health care plans under obama care. the white house has hoped for 3.3 million enrollees by this time. utah is asking the supreme court to block same-sex marriages in that state. more than 900 couples have married since december 20th when a judge struck down a ban filed by voters. one appeals court already has refused the state's request. wall street is resting this morning after an historic year. the dow jones industrial gained 72 points yesterday closing at 16576. that is another all-time high.

the blue chip index was up more than 26% in 2013. that's its biggest one-year gain since the mid-'90s. pthe nasdaq did better gaining 23%. and many analysts predict the market rally will continue in the new year. a huge fire is burning in minneapolis. temperatures there are below zero. fire crews crush ss rushed to the scene two hours ago. an eyewitness tells our minneapolis station that people inside were jumping out of windows to escape the flames. officials are reporting multiple injuries. president obama is celebrating the new year in hawaii where he's on vacation. yesterday he treated family and friends to a traditional hawaiian treat, sha

he had just gained victory in the democratic primary for president. the doctor in the role to try to save kennedy had been lost in history but not to his family. his daughter is here she's our michelle miller. >> this is a very personal story, part of my own family lore. growing up my father used to talk about how he rushed to senator kennedy's side. but not until my own son dared me to prove it did i look for the evidence to back up what my dad had told me. with calm precision dr. ross miller described to cbs news correspondent terry drinkwater the tragedy that had unfolded backstage hours earlier. >> can you describe the senator's wounds? >> well they were massive blood and head injuries. the extent of them could not be ascertained immediately. >> i never knew this interview existed. few did. it was buried deep within the cbs news archives.

>> how did mrs. kennedy appear to take this? >> well obviously, she was terribly upset. i thought she handled herself excellently. she was not in a state of panic. she was deeply concerned about her husband. >> my father campaigned for kennedy and became his delegate. a compton city councilman, he believed the senator was the best hope for bridging the nation's economic and racial divide. he and hundreds of supporters were celebrating kennedy's victory in the california primary. >> it's on to chicago, and let's >> and panic rippled over the ballroom. >> is there a doctor in the house, please? >> five rushed backstage to help, including my father a trauma surgeon. kennedy's friend paul schrade, a union official who shared the stage with him minutes earlier, was first person who went down. he took a bullet to the head while standing next to the senator. >> there's still a dent there. the bullet went into the first

layer of skull and out. >> you're lucky. >> very lucky. if i'd been an inch taller it really would have got me. >> dr. marvin irsher saw schrade bleeding on the floor. who was that doctor do you know? >> i don't know. >> it was that chaotic. >> i was concentrating on the task at hand. >> schrade was drifting and in out of consciousness. he has virtually no memory of that night. this is what we found in the cbs news archives. >> how many others were hit, doctor. >> i know of two others. i also took care of paul schrade who had a deep laceration of the forehead. although he had a great deal of blood loss apparently his injuries are not critical. >> to see this and to see how he knew your name. >> yeah. this is a real surprise for me. because you know i didn't see

him for one thing. but now i know that he was there and helping, how can i express my gratitude for that except to say to you that huh a great father. >> in all there were six shooting victims including journalist ira goldstein and william wisele. democratic party activist elizabeth evans and kennedy campaign volunteer irwin stroll. everyone except kennedy survived. my father died in 1996 without ever again seeing the people he had helped. two publications cited his service. a cover story in "jet" magazine and a photo caption in "life." but i couldn't find him in the picture. so we tracked down the man who took it bill etheridge. who is identified as dr. ross miller in that picture? >> i don't know. >> etheridge was responsible for many of the iconic images that night. >> i backed into the crowd. i'm holding the crowd back,

camera's around my neck. and every once in a while, i would reach down and go like that. that's how this picture was made. >> but of all the pictures he took, it seemed none captured my father tending the injured. for decades, etheridge said he couldn't talk about that night with anyone who was there with him. >> i find it quite difficult because we all know what would have happened. >> what would have happened? >> the country would be in a far better place i believe, had he become president. >> the loss of kennedy so traumatized etheridge, he fled to the mountains of mont. paul schrade sought solace in the desert. eventually both found their sense of purpose. schrade helping to build the robert f. kennedy school on the site of the former ambassador

hotel. the ballroom where kennedy gave his final speech is now the library that bears schrade's name. etheridge went on to publish two books on bobby kennedy. he allowed us to go through some of his unpublished photos. that's when something jumped out at me. bill, i think we may have found him. >> where? >> i think we may have found him. >> let me see. >> it's a picture inside the good samaritan hospital. there in the corner standing just outside of kennedy's room the good dr. miller. >> yes, it's him. >> that's him. >> that's him. >> finally, the photographic proof that my dad actually did what he said. my family history forever intertwined with the night that may have changed the course of american history. thank you. >> all right. all right. >> and that's where we first aired this report i was contacted by dozens of people who said they knew my father and

welcome back to "cbs this morning" and happy new year. in less than three weeks, president obama begin his sixth year in office. last year was full of challenges setbacks and a few small victories nchl 2014 the white house will take on many of the same issues including obama care, nsa surveillance and iran's nuclear program. >> with us this morning our chief white house correspondent major garrett, dee dee. >> major garrett, you're there every day, hould would you rate

this past year? >> it did not work out well. if you looked he was in the middle 50s. he's now in the mid to low 40s for all of those. so all of those things have lost 10 to 12 to 15 pointss depending ontown poll. not only has his approval suffered, but all of the fundamentals that a president relies upon in his second term to maintain his relevance and to project authority are weaker than they were a year ago. >> you know dee dee it looks like there was a misstep that the republicans made with the shutdown and the rollout of the obama careweb site which was so devastating to the president's credibility and his poll numbers. >> it's still hard to understand how that happened why they didn't see such a huge problem coming down the tracks for them. they made a lot of progress fixing the website. the front end is working much

better. it's incumbent on them. it will be gauged by how successful the program is, whether it provides coverage for people who don't currently have it. but the president needs to make a pivot. he needs to figure out how to get some things down that answer the question dho you care about the middle class. that's been the strength of his presidency. he needs to figure out how he can make progress without necessarily going through congress on things that people actually care about and will feel in their lives. >> do you think they'd be having the problems they're having if obama care had. had such a debacle? >> i think it was a tough year but there's no question it got quantitatively -- >> we know the parties that control the white house tend to suffer when the approval rating is below 50%. if he wants to recover here what has he got? six months?

>> reality is what matters. they say we have a communications problem. we're going to turn it around. we're shuffling it up a little bit. look, if you turn the actual conduct of the war in iraq around, unless you recover from the harriet miers debacle and two others things it's not going to turn around and it's the same here. if obama care turns around but i'm doubtful it will. if the actual premiums and coverage -- if people like it and iran stops nuclear weapons i think president obama will say a year from now i went through a lot of tough stuff, but look at the fundamental issues. i'm going beto be vindicated. >> one ghoul year for the republican party either bill. >> number there have been some rough patches. honestly if you look at where they were a year ago, after

romney had lost i think they had given in intelligently on the tax hikes for the welly there was huge internal fighting. they've connell out of it actually better than i would have expected. and, again at the end of the day it's about the party in the white house. republicans are look pretty optimistically now after 2014 and maybe taking back the senate. then they need to really think about 2016 and have a positive conservative or former agenda. not just capitalize. >> you see the economy picking up theme. >> people are feeling better about their own personal financial situation. they don't credit very much. you asked about time. a key marker will be a state of the union address. he's going to have to have credibility. the obama carrolle crystalized it.

it was a huge issue not just for that but what you're doing on behalf of security and how you're balancing privacy rights. the president's lost tremendous amount of support from young vouters because they didn't anticipate he would be like george bush and possibly more so. if the president doesn't take that head on at the state of the union -- i predict he will -- he's going to have a problem. >> i was going to say, what are you hearing, anthony, about the state of the union, their feeling about what they're doing? >> you have to apologize for obama care and set that debate. >> has. that been done? >> by the 20th of january the preident will have a couple of things that is not currently noble, which is how many people signed up, how many people were successfully covered, and how is moving twarpd the march 31st end of enrollment time. there will be time to access all

of those things and anecdotes and all of those things. deal with nsa, talk about iran and make one last push where the republicans and the president might find common ground deviation. >> to the point that dee dee made, the middle class is still an issue. they're in even worse trouble now. you talk about obama's numbers falling. they've fallen precipitously. and the election ultimately will be the election about the economy, again, i suspect, because that's what people really care about. how does he shift that debate? >> i think one of the things he'll do in the state of the union to address that is talk about things he can do without going to congress. there are certain things you have to get done. immigration reform orks farm bill, only things that can be accomplished legislate actively. this is a strength of the new one, john podesta, what can he do to move things forward that

don't involve congress and without the different agencies and departments of the government. i think you'll hear the president talk about here's what we're going do while we try to get past the bipartisanship. >> they really need to do more with the budget deal investigation been cut in november. i think paul ryan is in january going to announce a pretty big republican set of forms that will replace obama care so they can deal with the challenge which you don't have anything to propose in obama care's place and then i think the growth agenda is the challenge for both parties. the republicans have been too obsessed. we kept the spending level for two years buchl that doesn't tell people how -- you know that doesn't improve opportunity and social ability in america. the obama administration has been worried so they've actually lost the focus on that. if you think what's the republican's agenda to help main

street middle class, i would suspect most would have trouble on either side. >> and the republican party is also suffering an identity crisis where you see more and more speaker of the house willing to take on conservative groups who criticize the ryan budget deal where you see more and more what you would consider establishment conservative republicans like is senator john cornyn being challenged by republican tea partiers. how big is this war and who wins its? >> it's a struggle at the time. there hasn't been this since 1997 and 1978. what came out of that? some healthy debates for the party. i think most of what we're now seeing, though, is sort of the residue of the fights of 2013. e'd be pretty surprised if they don't get pretty united. >> who will run them in 2016 will be play of this if it's chris christie versus ted cruz

versus marko rubio. >> you can have pretty big primary contests and come out strong irif debates are kept under control and fundamentals are agreed upon. >> there's going to be -- it depends on who wins the primaries, whether it's the establishment win. >> you said here on the first day 2014. we've got little ways to go. >> you have the last word. >> the president's authority and clouds wayne clouds wane as it naturally does, he also has to understand and try to direct the post-obama cam pavement that's not really easy. you have joe biden looking at it. hellory clinton and he has to influence what is the party going to be. is it going to be a third term

or something else and i'm not sure if they'll figure it out. there are those pushing much harder. the president's not all together comfortable with that. will that be the legacy he leaves more san than he ran on? that's going to be an

headlines... a woman is dead after her car flipped on an on- ramp to westbound i-580 in oakland... police reckless driver ea good morning. 855. i'm michelle griego. a woman is dead after her car flipped into an on-ramp to westbound 580 in oakland. police got a report of a reckless driver early this morning. officers found a car upside- down with a driver trapped inside. >> jahi mcmath's family continues their effort to move the girl from children's oakland. the family wants an outside doctor to insert a feeding tube so they can remove her but the hospital says the girl is dead and won't allow the procedure. a host of new laws went into effect in california today including 11 new gun control restrictions. owners will now have to register long guns with the state and another law creates tougher penalties for parents

who don't properly store their firearms. here's lawrence. >> a lot of sunshine coming our way if you are getting up and out the door we have mostly clear skies and looks like a beautiful beginning to 2014. can't get the rain in here so let's enjoy sunshine under high pressure. temperatures running well above the average. you see a few storm systems off the coastline but just not going to get here so we are left high and dry. temperature of 65 in san jose, 65 in concord, one of the warmer spots into livermore valley at 67 degrees, 62 in san francisco. along the coastline temperatures generally in the low 60s. i think tomorrow will warm the numbers up a little more getting near 70 degrees in some of the warmest spots inland. a few clouds begin to come our way toward friday. and the temperatures cool off a few degrees. offshore winds kick in over the weekend with plenty of sunshine and then there's a slight chance of showers just a slight chance as we head in toward next tuesday. we are going to check your "kcbs traffic" coming up next.
