preparing for winter's worst. the northeast gets ready for the first winter storm of 2014 while the midwest digs out from a shroud of snow. frozen rescue. the operation is under way to save more than 50 people on board a ship stranded in the antarctic. and controversy at the rose parade. police arrest more than a dozen protesters opposed to a float, while a same-sex couple marries as part of the festivities. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for thursday, january 2nd, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, this morning a significant winter weather system is bearing down on the northeast. it threatens an area from philadelphia to new england with heavy snow, strong winds, and

dangerously cold temperatures. some areas will se blizzard conditions. plans are already being made to close major highways, and drivers are being advised to stay home. marlie hall is in new york with more. marlie, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, the first winter storm of the new year threatens to usher in 2014 with frigid temperatures, lots of snow, and some messy conditions. the snowplows are on standby as the northeast braces for a major winter storm. >> i have a 9 horsepower snow blower, i have three new bags of rock salt, i have two shovels, and two sons. >> reporter: the heaviest snow is expected to fall tonight into tomorrow. many schools in and around boston will be closed for the next two days. >> sounds like it's going to be a very -- it's going to be a hard snowstorm and the transportation is going to be difficult. >> reporter: the storm has already caused major problems across the midwest. >> i'm over it. i'm trying to get home.

i was getting ready to go to my grandma's house, but i think i'm just going to go home now. >> reporter: as much as a foot of snow fell in some parts of chicago, prompting hundreds of flight cancellations, and in indiana one person died and 15 were taken to the hospital when a pickup truck slammed into a bus. >> the pickup lost control due to the inclement weather and went into oncoming traffic of the bus. >> reporter: blowing in with the snow is bitter cold arctic air. across much of the country temperatures are expected to be zero and below. here in new york city, some light snow has begun to fall. there's a snow alert here in effect as well. when it's all said and done, we're expecting up to 7 inches of snow. anne-marie? >> marlie hall in new york. thank you, marlie. eric fisher of our affiliate wbz is tracking the weather system. >> it didn't take long to get our first winter storm of 2014

under way. a winter advisory from missouri to pennsylvania and blizzard warnings in effect for parts of long island. we'll watch this congeal into a larger storm as we head into the evening hours. by 8:00 p.m., a shield of snow from boston back up to d.c. it will wrap up thursday night into friday morning. the worst of the conditions from boston down to new york and perhaps down toward the jersey shore as well. by the time we head to friday morning it starts to wrap up and by friday afternoon/evening the snow works its way off to the coast. snow totals by the time we get to the late thursday hours, 3 to 6 inches in parts of central ohio. 6 to 12 inches in new york state. as it wraps up we could see a foot or so more in boston, half a foot in new york. near blizzard conditions possible near the coast, boston, cape code, and down toward new york and long island and subzero windchills. the cold a big part of this. when we wake up saturday morning, look at some of the temperatures.

almost all of the northeast goes below zero. i'm meteorologist eric fisher of cbs news. minneapolis officials say they don't know what started an apartment fire and killed 14 people. the fire started yesterday morning and quickly burned through the three-story building. fire crews dealt with subzero temperatures fighting the blaze. witnesses say they saw people jumping from windows. the roof partially collapsed and six of the injured people are in critical condition. and the passengers on that russian research vessel trapped by ice in antarctica are being rescued this morning. a helicopter from a chinese ice breaker landed alongside the russian ship to fly them to a nearby vessel. the russian ship has been trapped since christmas eve, but passengers were never in danger. federal officials investigating that oil train derailment in north dakota say they uncovered a broken train axle. it's not clear if the broken axle caused the crash. investigators say the oil train

collided with an already derailed grain train. 18 cars of the oil train jumped the track. several exploded and burned. no one was injured. the track is expected to reopen today. and the parents of claire davis say they forgive the gunman who shot and killed their daughter last month at a denver area high school. a memorial service was held for davis yesterday. the 17-year-old was shot by a fellow student who stormed the school trying to kill a teacher. >> the fact is that karl was so blinded by his emotions that he didn't know what he was doing. my wife and i forgive karl pierson for what he did because he didn't know what he was doing. we would ask all of you here and all of you watching to search your hearts and also forgive karl pierson. >> karl pierson killed himself after shooting davis as law enforcement officers closed in. relatives of a california girl declared brain dead by her doctors are getting help this morning.

a foundation started by terri sh schiavo's family is helping. as john blackstone reports, the mcmath case is raising the same complicated and emotional question about when life ends. >> reporter: jahi mcmath's family is searching for a facility to take their daughter who is brain dead after surgery for a ton sill lengthmy. her family is fighting for her to have a tracheotomy to insert a breathing tube so she can be moved. >> i feel like i'm dying because i want her to see 2014. >> reporter: in a letter the hospital wrote performing medical procedures on the body of a deceased human being is simply not something children's hospital can do. the family's attorney christopher dolan says they're looking for a doctor to perform the surgery.

>> we just ask that you would have the compassion and good medical ethics to abide by this mother's wish and reach out to us. e-mail me. >> reporter: hospital spokesman sam singer. >> there's a very difficult catch-22 that the mcmath family attorney has created, which is that he keeps wanting people to believe this young woman is alive. she's not. >> reporter: the mcmath family says a facility called new beginnings in new york is willing to carry for her, but its location was closed today. john blackstone, cbs news, san francisco. president obama and michelle obama are sending get well wishes to barbara bush. the 88-year-old former first lady is being treated for pneumonia at a houston hospital. a spokesman said she is responding well to treatment. well, coming up on the "morning news," snapchat security failed. the popular photo messaging app is hit by hackers, and the

>> i couldn't be happier. it's a huge stepping stone for other states as well. >> reporter: shaun had to spend $375 to buy chock marijuana truffles and an eighth of an ounce called bubba kush. how long is that eighth going last you? >> we'll see. it might go in a frame on the wall somewhere. >> reporter: this denver resident said he looked forward to buying and enjoying marijuana without fear of being placed under arrest. >> i've been in trouble before because marijuana was illegal, so it's kind of a big deal for me. >> reporter: there are limits on the sale of marijuana. buyers must be 21 or older. it can't be smoked in public places. colorado residents can purchase up to an ounce. nonresidents are limited to a quarter ounce and can't take it out of state. organizers of colorado's campaign to legalize marijuana expect almost $400 million in sales this year and say it will create jobs, tax revenue, and reduce crime. brian vicente is an advocate.

the italian automaker fiat is taking full control of the u.s. automaker chrysler. it's offering to buy the remaining shares of chrysler that it doesn't already own from the united auto eunen. fiat will pay $3.65 billion to the union which pays health care bills for the retires. the company already owns 58.5% of it. a security breach at snapchat. as many as 4.6 million snapchat may be at risk. their phone numbers and usernames may be leaked online. snapchat said it was no big deal and it had taken appropriate action. apparently the safeguards were not enough. a georgia banker accused of embezzling millions is in custody. aubrey lee price was arrested tuesday in south jachlt he had been on the run for 18 months and was pulled over for a traffic violation. price disappeared in 2012 after telling family members he was going to kill himself.

they run for three touchdowns and central florida wins its first bcs game, 52-42. stanford and michigan state. the spartans take their first lead of the game in the fourth quarter on a touchdown catch by tony lippett. in less than two minutes to place, stanford gets stuck and seals the first rose bowl victory for michigan state in 26 years, 24-20. >> pretty incredible. pretty incredible. i think they're happy. >> is this reality as good as the dream? >> i'm still dreaming. i don't know. >> the spartans' biggest miscue, they tried dousing coach mark dantonio with gatorade. they totally missed there. a record-setting play. a pass from his own end zone. quincy comes down with the ball nearly 60 yards down field and he does the rest. the 99-yard touchdown is the longest play in nebraska history and it helps the cornhuskers to a 24-19 win over georgia.

jushl floral floats, marching bands, and majestic horses, but as reported, hot button issues threatened the show. >> reporter: it was a sight never seen before in the rose parade's 125-year history. the couple said "i do" on top of a wedding cake-shaped float as viewers witnessed the same-sex marriage. >> we're honoring the efforts of, you know, thousands of men and women who fought long and hard for this. >> reporter: the aids health care float celebrates gay rights victories including supreme court ruling that opened the door to same-sex marriage in california. the boycott the 2014 rose parade facebook page had more than 8,000 likes. some paradegoers thought it was over the top. >> i have no problem getting married, you know, but why make a show out of it. >> reporter: the city of pasadena stepped up security in the wake of the boston marathon bombings.

and as criticism intensified over the same-sex ceremony. more than 1,100 officers and bomb sniffing dogs patrolled the 5.5-mile parade route. police arrested 19 peta protesters for blocking the seaworld float. peta says seaworld is using the parade to repair its image which was affected by the black fish. >> it's a sham. at seaworld, they're confined to tanks. >> many spectators are just happy to begin 2014 with this new year's tradition. teresa garcia, cbs news, pasadena. fans of the '90s sitcom "fresh prince of bel-air" are remembering james avery. the loveable family pate tree yark died tuesday. his character phillip banks was a wealthy lawyer and judge who became a father figure to his sister's teenage son played by young will smith.

a social worker's job description usually includes making calls and house visits but one social worker in minneapolis is getting under the hood. as manuel bojorquez reports she's helping people get back behind the wheel so they can carry on with their lives. >> reporter: kathy is working hard to fix a problem. during her 16 years as a social worker she discovered car trouble could make people homeless. >> it doesn't have to be a major repair for it to be $500 or $600 and when you're just surviving, that can break your entire budget. >> reporter: she decided the best way to address the problem was to fix it herself. she became a mechanic. >> one of my first days in mechanic school, the instructor said, okay, i want everybody to turn and face the wall where the

crank shafts are. i don't know where those are. i waited and watched for everybody else to turn. >> reporter: she completed a two-year training program and founded the garage last april. she charges t$15 an hour for labor. the going rate is be $100 and she has no markup on parts. judy has been unable to work for five years because of a neck injury sustained in a car accident. her car's engine needed about $400 worth of repairs on this visit. >> $64 for all that? >> yep. >> she paid only $54. >> thank you. >> what i'm experiencing here for me is a miracle. >> there you go. >> i have been healed and now it's my car's turn. >> there have been nights you've had to sleep in your truck. >> right, yeah. >> reporter: linda, who asked we not use her last name, has had

[ laughter ] we have some developing news at this hour. fire at the chinese consulate building here in san francisco appears to be arson. that's according to the consulate's spokesman. surveillance video shows a person pouring two buckets of gasoline on the front doorsteps there before setting it ablaze. the fire began about 9:30 last night. crews managed to control it within minutes. nobody was injured. 52 scientists and tourists are now safe
