it's cold. >> indoors this morning. >> whether are is the top story. as you wake up in the west, the northeast is grappling with dangerous weather from the first major winter storm of 2014. this nor'easter that started in the midwest is affecting 100 million americans. it is blamed for nine deaths nationwide. the heaviest snow is falling in eastern massachusetts. >> this is how it looks in boston right now. temperatures are falling along with the snow. most of the northeast will be in the single digits tonight or below jr. colder than it has been in several years. snow is from ten inches to two feet near boston. along the coast in maine, massachusetts and new york. in port jefferson, new york. >> good morning to you. this is the kind of snow that fell here all night long. not so much that heavy wet snow, but very light, fluffy snow that would blow around in the wind.

it shows you how told the temperatures are. it is not over yet. much more of this snow to come. maybe ten inches to a foot when it's all said and done. heavy snow stretching from new york to new england. >> it is crazy. they said we would get 8 to 12 and we have over a foot. >> more than a foot of snow had fallen in upstate new york and nearly two feet blanketed parts of massachusetts. with the threat of more snow, plows and salt spreaders will be moving in. >> we will be up all night. >> on the roadways, icy and slick conditions let to spinouts. >> the car is slipping and sliding. i tried to stop the car before i ran into the gate. >> they closed three major highwaysas a precaution. >> take frequent breaks. >> bill deblasio took ocffice

days ago and pleaded with residents to stay off the streets. >> stay indoors the mac mum time possible. stay out of your cars. >> it wasn't just the roads. these pictures captured snow piling up in a subway stop. with the storm showing no sign of letting up. >> when it stops, it will be about the wind and these bitter cold temperatures. i can barely look into the camera and talk. 40 to 45 mile an hour wind gusts and numbers down near zero. 10 degrees out here right now and with that wind chill it feels like 10 to 15 below zero. >> on new york's long island. thank you. 400 national guard troops are out trying to help local residents. people still face a threat of flooding there. from the boston station, wbz in massachusetts southeast of boston.

sarah, good morning. >> it is a wild night along the coast in massachusetts. the winds are so intense. an estimated 40 miles per hour and i'm cleaning against this deck here. just to brace myself so i don't lose footing. the real concern here is coastal flooding. take a look at video from around midnight overnight. the ocean was so powerful. crashing against the sea wall. this is a scene along the coastline. the good news though, no reports of any major flooding. some were flooded out and no rescues were necessary. no state assistance was called in. all reports so far so good. however folk who is live in the low-lying areas were asked to evacuate. evacuations have been set up.

here as well as neighboring communities. at midnight, the seas are so high and so strong. this morning we have snow and we have this wind and the ocean spray with the snow like ice pellets coming at you. i will wrap it up here in massachusetts. anthony and nor a i think i will go to my happy place. >> i think we all should go there. >> causing travel chaos across the country. trains and highways are also running slightly. that follows widespread delays yesterday. michelle miller is in new york at la guardia airport. >> good morning. even airports in the west are feeling the ripple effect of these weather delays. there have been 75 flight

cancellations at lax alone. here the line is around the corner as passengers hope that they will catch two dozen on time flights that the boards say are still on time. that as jfk was shut down for more than two hours. airlines canceled more than 800 flights in new york city alone. >> by thursday night, more than 1,000 flights were either canceled or delayed out of new york's three airports. that was nothing compare with boston's logan airport. terminals were empty and it is expected flights will not resume until friday afternoon. across the country, more than 2,000 flights were canceled and leaving many travelers stuck or forced to find an altimate route home. amtrak lines were limited in service and roadways across the

country proved treacherous. cars swerved off the highways and got stuck in tightly packed snow. three major highways were closed last night as a precaution. with improving weather conditions, things appear to be back on track. the airlines are reporting only nine flight delays for tomorrow nationwide. anthony and nora, things look good, but the day is young. >> it is indeed. this storm hit more than a dozen states. parts of the area around chicago got more than a foot of snow. from our chicago station wbbm looks at what is next. >> anthony and nora, dangerous winter weather conditions continue for the northeast. the storm system will pull away quickly through the day, but then the problem will be blowing and drifting snow.

digging out from all the accumulation we expect to see. there winter storm warnings in the pink and much of the northeast. the red from the cape up to the coastline of massachusetts and down into long island. blizzard warnings there. low visibility and high winds creating white out conditions through the afternoon in those areas. accumulations will be high in the eastern half of massachusetts. could be as much as a foot to two feet of snow there. it looks like much of the northeast will have more than a foot of snow. probably anywhere from five to eight inches total accumulation and tonight it deals can the lows and the coldest yet is the midwest. we can hit the record low high for chicago for all time. nora and anthony? >> that's a rough week. thanks, megan. we turn to news overseas. the u.s. embassy is evacuating

additional staff. the embassy said the security situation is deteriorating beginning saturday. they will no longer provide basic services. hundreds of americans left after fighting broke out last month. at least 1,000 people are now dead. >> this morning two americans are being held in custody by libyan security officials. they're being detained in benghazi. a libyan official said the americans are college basketball players from the benghazi university team. they are not being named and it's not yet clear why they are in custody. >> iraqi security forces are fighting this morning to win back control of two key cities. al qaeda militants seized parts after overwhelming police. troops fought their bloodiest battles in the sounding area. elizabeth calmer is in london.

>> good morning. that area has been unstable for months, but there was a surge this week so dramatic that the military actually launched air strikes against insurgent fighters. >> where so many soldiers lot of their lives, it's in turmoil again. security forces attacked islamist fighters with weapons after they launched an offensive this week overrunning mosque, jails and police stations. it was this region west of baghdad that u.s. forces struggled to stabilize until 2009. once they pulled out, fighters, some with links to al qaeda started to reorganize helped by the savage conflict next door in syria's civil war. paul is the former presidential envoy to iraq. >> the collapse of the syrian government's control over its

territory means al qaeda has a new area of organization. isis that is operating in anvar province. >> this is no longer the organization once run by osama bin laden that brought down the twin towers. it's now a loose affiliation operating on both sides of this long border made up of radical sunni fighters, war lords and thugs who want to rule the area and impose hard line law. the main enemy is no longer america. it's now the millions of shia muslims who live here too. while the iraqi army is doing its best to restore stability, the fight is a deadly one. so in the country that the u.s. hoped to put on the path to stable democracy not so long ago, almost 8,000 civilians died in 2013.

anthony? >> thank you. and the trip home for 52 scientists and tourists plucked from an ice bound ship in antarctica is on hold. the ice breaker carrying them is being told not to leave the area. a chinese ship that helped is fighting to free itself from the ice. that crew worries they could also get stuck. >> federal officials say a fire set at the chinese consulate in san francisco appears to be an act of arson, not terrorism. the workers say video from wednesday night shows someone pouring gasoline on the building and setting it on fire. no one was hurt. the chinese want better security. no word on a possible motive or possible suspects. >> the nsa is trying to develop a surety kpucomputer that could crack every kind of encryption. the post said the computer could break codes used to protect

banking, medical, business and government records around the world. the nsa is not commenting. the new york times is under fire after urging clemency for snowden. jan crawford is in washington. >> good morning. the papers are issuing this supporting snowden for months. this is the first time they called for leniency. they said they did enormous damage to national security. the "new york times" said edward snowden did an important public service by exposing a surveillance apparatus they said was out of control and illegal. critics took aim at the paper and a frequent target of conservatives and complained of a liberal slant. >> he's a traitor and the new york times is an accomplice. over the last several years, they made themselves a blame america rag. >> describing snowden as the whistle blower, they wrote

considering the enormous value of the information he revealed and the abuses he exposed, mr. snowden deserves better a of exile, fear, and flight. they stopped short of calling for a full pardon. the british newspaper that published many of snowden's leaks that ran an editorial wednesday. the head of the nsa task force investigating the leaks told 60 minutes he was open to a reduced punishment saying it's worth having a conversation about. i would need assurances that the remainder of the data could be secure. that is not widely shared. >> she would never consider it. >> there is a difference between him saying something and the president of the united states saying something. >> in june, they charged him with theft and espionage. they carry a penalty of up to 30 years in prison. snowden remains in hiding in russia. over christmas, he appeared on

british television and defended his actions. >> together we can find a better balance and mass surveillance and remind the government if they want to know how we feel, asking is always cheaper than spying. >> federal courts have been split on whether the government secret surveillance is legal. earlier this month, the district here in washington ruled the nsa violated rights by collecting that vast amount of phone records. another judge in new york said that program was constitutional and an important tool in the fight against terrorism. anthony and nora? >> thank you. >> the mayor of north america's fourth largest city is promising more years. that's what toronto mayor ford said after filing the papers thursday. he is the first candidate to jump into the race. he stripped most of husband power after admittingking

good morning. a fatal crash and traffic alert with major delays in both directions of 280 in daly city. the fatal crash was southbound by john daly. the right lane has reopened at the scene to let some of those trapped cars get through. the accident was initially reported around 5:30 this morning. it happened on the northbound side of the freeway. one person went over the center median got into the southbound lanes and was hit and killed by another vehicle. so southbound for a while since 5:30 all lanes had been shut down at the scene. you can see that they are letting some cars through. northbound two lanes are still blocked. so obviously use alternates, avoid 280 in the meantime.

here. we have seen almost 15 inches of snow and 2 degrees. one of the reasons it looks desserted is all the state offices and schools are closed. all state employees have to stay home and even urged private businesses. if you can keep your employees home, please do. we have seen very little foot traffic of pedestrians. some of the people are going to area reports to work and that type of thing. the employees. we talked to the governor and one thing he is worried about is high tide at noon. my colleague has been reporting for you down in the south shore of boston worried about high tide at noon. potential flooding and he is sending extra personnel to the coast to deal with that. that's the latest live in boston. back to you anthony and red sox fan, nora. >> dave, thanks so much. >> millions of americans are

getting a new safety warning. the government said a form of crude oil shipped by train may be more hazardous. in washington with that. good morning. >> good morning anthony and nora. the department of transportation is responding to the derailment on monday, but this is an issue across north america. this is the government response to it. it has been a wake up call to the industry. the smoke and 234r5i78s shook north dakota. a train carrying oil was involved in a derailment. no one was injured and the investigation into what happened continues. the department of transor the portation issued an alert warping the industry to properly test, characterize and classify hazardous materials. it promised unannounced inspections of rail cars. the oil burning in the latest came from the bakken shale with the most active oil fields in the country. the type of oil being produced there may be more flammable than

traditional air, raising concerns about how it is transport and if it is properly identified. the derailment was the fourth major next 2013 involving a freight train transporting crude oil. the incident that moved the industry to action apd happeneda small town in quebec after the train left the tracks and exploded. with 800,000 barrels of oil a daya the nation's rail ways, there few safe options. >> the real option is whether we will provide a new safer tank car for the existing rail tank cars and will we reroute the most dangerous trains around major cities. >> the fraid industry, the owners of the rail say that most deliveries are made without any issue. they mostly support what the government is trying to do here. they say that there issues they want to know exactly what is

being transported so that local authorities can respond properly. >> jeff, thank you. president obama doesn't get a lot of time off, but when he does, there is a chance he goes golfing. the president has played 159 rounds since he took office including 27 games in his home state of hawaii. that's according to a count and the president is in hawaii this morning continuing his vacation with the first family. chip reid is in honolulu. he played a lot of golf. >> more than ever. >> early in his first term, the president told cbs news he was not good at golf and didn't play the game because he loved it, but it was the only way to get out of what he colled the container or the presidential bubble. during his years in office, he has been increasingly passionate about the game of golf. the president teed off thursday at a u.s. marine base in hawaii

this fatal traffic accident in daly city is still our major traffic hotspot this morning. let's go out to chopper 5 and we can show you the latest from the scene. we got an update from chp. southbound 280 approaching john daly city they are letting some cars through the accident scene. it's the far right lane that's reopened, the slow lane. but the left lanes are closed. they have completely cleared the northbound side of the freeway. they have freed up the two northbound lanes that had been block. but it's really southbound that's seeing the biggest impact right now so consider using 101 as your alternate. they say some lanes are going to be blocked until at least 11 a.m. a quick check of a map, the bay bridge, things look good now coming into san francisco from the east bay, metering lights off. that's traffic. check of your forecast after this break.

good morning. headed outside today, a little chilly early on in some of the valleys but we have a lot of sunshine all day long and these temperatures well above average this afternoon. looks like over the financial district in san francisco, a few clouds passing on through. that helps keep the temperatures up a little bit overnight. toward the coastline, ocean beach some clouds. no rain in sight until next week. that's some good news if you want to enjoy the weekend. today, a lot of sunshine coming our way. some very mild temperatures, in fact i think by the afternoon, some of these numbers may get near record levels, about 67 in redwood city. 66 in san jose. 64 in san francisco. and 67 degrees in the napa valley. i think in the weekend, less cloud cover, more sunshine on the way. and in fact as we get in toward the latter part of the weekend some beautiful weather continuing but then things change next week. slight chance of showers on tuesday. i think a better chance of more clouds and much cooler weather and a chance of more rain come thursday. ,,,,,,,,

approaches early this afternoon. meteorologist megan glaros of wbbm is tracking its progress. good morning. >> good morning, anthony, norah, gayle, we are concerned about moderate to even potential major coastal flooding along the coastline of massachusetts, as the winds continue to stay up. we could see damage to shore roads and structures. the system moves pretty quickly on off to the north and east eventually allowing folks to start to dig out from all the very, very heavy snows, but blizzard warnings will remain in effect for the red shaded areas, that's long island, along the coastline in massachusetts. pink color shows winter storm warnings, but we're more concerned about the blizzard areas. low visibility, high winds creating possible whiteout conditions there. and total? so far we've picked up 15 inches in boston itself but 18 to 24 inches before all is said and done and as much as ten inches

jake's dad brian lines up the ball and lines up the distance and jake does the rest. >> reporter: in lesson, your dad put the ball down there. i wouldn't think you had any visual impairment. >> there were times my dad lined me up and i struck the ball. then they were like, oh, i wish i could be lined up and i'm like, i'm blind. he was 10 yemonths old when he became blind in the left eye due to cancer. the cancer returned eight times. when jam was 12 he learned h would lose his right eye and go blind. his mom cindy recalls the surgery. >> i went into his room to wake him up and i couldn't even wake him up without crying. he was -- you know, he started crying. i just laid in bed with him and cried, you know.

>> reporter: knowing he was facing a lifetime of darkness jake spent his last month of sight making memories, even on his car ride to the hospital. >> he was looking at the sunrise. look it. there's that. all the landmarks, all of it -- it was just breaking my heart. it was just awful. >> reporter: what is the last thing you remember seeing? >> i remember taking last looks aet my parents and just kind of, you know, looking at the white cre ceiling of the hospital thinks this is the last thing i'll see. >> reporter: but when jake woke up he started focusing on what he could do. he kre lently shot 578 on 18 holes and hopes to be the first blind golf attorney pga tour. he also plays football. jake is the long snapper on his high school team. a few claps and a tap on his leg and he knows when to hike the ball. he savors every win.

she had questions about her brother's death and about pastor schirmer. >> i did feel very strongly that there was something wrong with him and that he was not to be trusted. so i knew that something was not right. >> rose soon learned that pastor schirmer was no stranger to tragedy.buried two wives. >> his first wife fell down the stairs and died and the second died from being in a car accident. that's strange. the hair on the back of my neck actually stood up. >> rose could not let that strange feeling go. and so she called police. >> she alerts us to the fact that the reverend has lost now two wives. >> jim wagner is a detective with the pocono township police department. he found out that pastor schirmer first wife jewel died in 1999. >> no one really knew exactly what happened.

good morning. while the volume of traffic overall around the bay area is very down, san francisco cannot catch a break. we have seen a number of different accidents there. northbound 101 approaching alemany is the newest one. the lane is blocked there and traffic was still trying to recover after an earlier crash in the connector ramp from northbound 101 to the central freeway. also, the investigation continues into the fatal pedestrian accident. it has been there since 5:30 a.m. several lanes the left lanes are blocked. southbound 280 approaching john daly boulevard slow-and-go traffic for at least a mile. bay bridge metering lights are off.
