millions of americans in the grips of a deep freeze, plunging temperatures, howling winds and snow adding up to what forecasters are calling a dangerous cold. smoke and flames up in the air. a fire on the 0th floor of a new york city high-rise turns deadly as hundreds of firefighters work to battle the flame. and stroke of luck. a missing man is located by his family after they see a picture of him taken hundreds of miles from home. captioning funded by cbs this is t this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, january 6th, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, this morning a massive and potentially life-threatening cold system is gripping much of the country. dangerously cold temperatures,

snow, and ice have prompted windchill warnings from montana all the way to alabama. an emergency order has been issued for indianapolis making it illegal to drive except for emergencies 678. the temperature there today could reach 39 below zero. more than 1,000 flights were canceled in the midwest yesterday. today more than 2,000 flights have been canceled nationwide. on sunday a plane that landed at new york's kennedy airport slid into snow as it was taxiing. no one was injured but the airport was temporarily closed because of icy runways. and last night the temperature in minot, north dakota, was minus 20 degrees. this morning it's expected to be even colder with the windchill reaching minus 60. jamie yucc aas of our minneapol

station wcco has more. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. the temperature is cold out here. it's 23 below zero. the windchill is 43 below zero. it could get worse before it gets better. as a matter of fact, there are dangerous temperatures as you've been talking about across the country where frostbite can set in in less than five minutes. in chicago, officials warn residents to prepare for heavy snow and brutal temperatures that are expected to last through tuesday. this doctor is chicago's department of public health. >> the cold temperatures this coming week are more than an in convenience. they're serious, they're dangerous, and they can pose a serious health risk. >> reporter: by midday, city residents had closed out nearby grocery stores. >> we did double than expected. it was kind of unexpected. we hung in there. we had all hands on deck and everyone worked hard. >> reporter: hazardous conditions caused a heavy crash

involved seven tractor trailers. trucks traveling through 10 inches of snow jackknifed on indiana highways. the cause for the cold air, the polar vortex, counter clock-wise dense arctic air that has piled up in the north pole. it's pushed south traveling as far as the gulf coast. so far the winter storm has been blamed firefighter 16 deaths and it's so cold in north dakota, frigid temperatures and high winds have become life threatening for anyone who walks out the door. they're pleading residents to remain indoors. >> if you can hold off getting groceries or if you can hold off without the necessities, don't go on the road because there's no need to leave the house if you're -- you know, if it doesn't warrant an emergency. >> reporter: that really is the warning here today. stay inside. if youabsolutely must go outside, you're asked to bundle up even more so than what i'm doing right now.

georgia. you can see the advisories making it all the way to the golf. anyone at disney world tomorrow morning, it will feel like 20 to start. again, this will last a few days before the cold air shifts off to the east. in minneapolis, i'm chris schaefer for cbs news. jahi mcmath, the 13-year-old california girl declared brain dead after tonsillectomy, was moved from the hospital. she was moved last night with a ventilator but not a feeding tube. mcmath was released to door never who then released her to her family. they obtained a court order preventing the hospital from removing her from the vent late cher is keeping her heart pumping. >> this family knows that the likelihood of a recovery short of almost a miracle or just the spirit of this family in this girl is improbable. but what this family wanted was a chance. >> the family did not say where

she was taken. and in washington, congress returns to work today. election-year politics will undoubtedly shape legislation as lawmakers tackle a number of contentious issues. president obama returned to washington from his hawaiian vacation yesterday. during his weekly radio address, he urged lawmakers to reinstate jobless benefits. susan mcginnis has more. good morning, susan. >> good morning, anne-marie. the first session of the 113th congress was one of the most unproductive in american history. there's a spending bill in raising the nation's borrowing limit, but in the short term democratic leaders are pushing for an extension of jobless benefits. >> it's the right thing to do. we have long-term unemployment and that's why the american people support this. democrats, independents, and republicans. >> senate majority leader harry

reid has a vote planned for tonight to extend jobless benefits for nearly three months. nearly 1.5 million americans saw their payments end on december 28th. republicans want the cost of extending the benefits offset with spending cuts elsewhere. >> if the senator comes up with any kind of a reasonable idea to offset the $26 billion, i think he might find some people that are willing to talk to him. >> congress must also agree to a short term spending bill to keep the government running. the current bill ends january 15th. and raising the nation's borrowing limit must be resolvedly late february, early march according to the treasury department. today the senate is scheduled to vote on janet yellen's nomination to be head of the federal reserve. there is also the five-year $500 billion farm bill and the dispute over cutting the $80 billion a year food stamp program. and there's more on congress's agenda including sanctions against iran and immigration reform.

the mountain town of aspen. karen morfitt of our denver station kcnc reports. >> reporter: this is all that remains of the charred plane wreckage. >> it hit the runway, bust into flames and skidded a certain business. >> reporter: the twin engine business jet was on its way from aspen to tucson, arizona, when something went terribly wrong and crashed onto the runway. >> the plane had caught fire and flipped over on its top. >> reporter: a flight tracker shows the pilot may have made a few passes around the airport before trying to land. the national transportation safety board is investigating the accident, but reports are that the wind may have played a factor. >> well, it was cold and breezy today, but we can't speculate as to whether or not that had anything to do with the cause. it was a very breezy cold kind of a powder day. snowing off and on. >> reporter: all three on board the plane were pilots. the one who died was from mexico.

until the wreckage is cleared, the airport will remain closed. for cbs news, karen morfitt in aspen. in new york city an emergency landing is being called a miracle. the small plane with three aboard experienced engine trouble on the way back to connecticut after touring the statue of liberty on saturday, so the pilot put the plane down on a busy bronx interstate. there were no serious injuries. >> on the "cbs moneywatch" yahoo! is targets in a software attack and the hot tech toys you'll be wanting this year. wendy gillette is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, wendy. >> good morning, anne-marie. tokyo's nikkei lost more than 2%. hong kong's hang seng dropped half a percent. here on wall street investors will be focused on the december unemployment report due out at the end of the week.

temperatures and both home teams were left out in the cold. it was 5 degrees in green bay when the packers and 49ers kicked off. vernon davis catches a 28-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to give the niners a three-point lead. green bay would tie the game up, but san francisco sets themselves up for a last-minute field goal by phil dawson. the 49ers overcome the packers and the elements to win, 23-20. dawson said it was so cold it felt like he was kicking a brick. >> leather gets hard in cold weather, but that's just the challenge that was there for us today, and you have to approach it a little bit differently, but at the end of the day, you either make the kick or you don't. >> and just take a look at how close dawson's kick comes to being blocked. it almost got into the arms of green bay's house. and the weather conditions were warmer but much wetter in cincinnati. the bengals hosting the chargers.

cincinnati has not won a playoff game since 1990. so here is how the playoff matchup shapes up for next week. >> the nfc seattle hosts new orleans on saturday while san francisco travels east to take on carolina sunday. in the afc, indianapolis goes to new england on saturday, and on sunday peyton manning and the denver broncos host san diego. those games can be seen right here on cbs. and today marks the 20th anniversary of the start of one of the biggest scandals in sports history. >> why? >> you remember that. on january 6th in 1994, olympic figure skater nancy kerrigan was clubbed on the leg following a warmup for the u.s. championships. now, the attack happened just weeks before the winter olympics in little hammer, norway. four men including the ex-husband of kerrigan's rival tonya harding went to prison for
