>> it's a story about how george clooney would rather float away in space and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, january 13th, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. today alex rodriguez plans to file suit to overturn to ruling that bans the new york yankee from baseball for the entire 2014 season. on saturday they changed his suspension from 211 games to 102 games plus the playoffs. rodriguez denies the doping allegations. last night a key witness in the case told his story to "60 minutes." marlie hall has more on that. good morning, marlie. >> anne-marie, the two top leaders of major league baseball also appeared on "60 minutes"

and that outraged rodriguez's lawyer. it was anthony bosch who talked about what he said were the details of what he says were extensive and prolonged use of banned substances. >> testosterone and growth factor 1, human growth hormone, and some different forms of peptides. >> bosch is major league baseball's prime eyewitness against rodriguez. he owned the clinic at the center of the major league doping scandal. bosch says he was paid $12,000 a month and that rodriguez took the drugs right before a game. >> all of a sudden his levels of testosterone are higher, it gives him a little bit more -- gives him more energy, it gives him more strength, more focus. >> rodriguez admitted to using the drugs from 2001 to 2003 but denies the bosch allegations.

>> the notion that bosch is now coming on the television without an examination or under oath is laughable. >> reporter: bosch also claims rodriguez and his people tried to bribe him and threaten him. bosch denied giving anyone any performance-enhancing drugs but changed his story after cutting a deal with major league baseball. baseball's chief operating baseball's rob manfred says he feared for his life. >> haven't you given him every incentive to tell you what you want to hear? >> we had all sorts of evidence that supported everything that he said. >> reporter: "60 minutes" obtained more than 500 text messages between him and bosch. bud selig didn't testify at the arbitration hearing but said the penalty fit the judgment. >> in my judgment his actions were beyond comprehension, and i'm somebody who's now been in the game over 50 years.

>> in a statement following last night's broadcast rodriguez's lawyer said selig's and manfred's appearance on "60 minutes" put forth hubrisness and vindictiveness. >> marlie hall in new york. thank you very much. you can see all of it online at cbsnews.com. minor damage is reported in puerto rico this morning following a powerful offshore earthquake. the quake measured 6.4 and struck just after midnight about 35 miles from the coast. buildings swayed in the capital of san juan some 60 miles from the epicenter. no injuries have been reported though. and this morning it's still unclear when the residents of nine west virginia counties will be able to use their tap water. the water supply in the counties around charleston was tainted by a chemical spill thursday. officials say tests near the state's largest water plant are encouraging. some 300,000 residents are affected.

iran has agreed to start freezing its nuclear program on january 20th. in exchange iran will get relief from economic sanctions. it's part of an interim deal that will last for six months while a final nuclear agreement is negotiated. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. president obama says he has no illusions about how hard it's going to be to achieve the objectives of this deal but he says for the sake of national security, now is the time to give diplomacy a chance. still many in congress are not fully on board. iran's foreign minister appeared announce a six-month deal to limit its nuclear program. he says beginning next week iran will limit enrichment of uranium to 5%, a level used for power producti production. iran also agrees to dilute its stockpile of 20% enriched

uranium, which is just below weapons grade. in exchange the u.s. and five other powers will reduce sanctions and will have access to nuclear sites to make sure iran is complying with the agreement. secretary of state john kerry sounded cautiously optimistic a long-term solution could be reached. >> the negotiations will be very difficult, but they are the best chance that we have to be able to resolve this critical national security issue peacefully and durably. >> senator mark kirk, the republican co-sponsor of a bill to impose more sanctions on iran says the administration will give them billions of dollars while allowing them to keep their illicit infrastructure in place, but president obama insists this deal is the best way to ensure iran never develops a nuclear weapon. and the president is promising to veto that senate bill if it passes. anne-marie?

>> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. funeral services are being held today for former israel's leader ariel sharon. vice president joe biden is leading the delegation. sharon died saturday. he suffered a strike eight years ago and has been in a coma since. he served as prime minister and defense minister and was one of israel's most famous and controversial generals. ariel sharon was 85 years old. a new jersey lawmaker investigating the george washington bridge traffic jam scandal says a crime was committed. democrat john wisniewski shows e-mail exchanges close to the governor used public resources for political retribution. >> i don't think it's possible for all of those people to be involved and know and for the governor to absolutely have no communication. remember, this was in the midst

stolen cards were used for unought rised charges. stocks in asia were up. hong kong's hang sang gained a quarter percent. the shanghai lost a percent. here on wall street investors will be focused on earnings reporting coming out this week. intel, ge, and several big banks are due to report. the dow jones industrial average lost 32 last week, the nasdaq gained 42. tyson foods is recalling nearly 34,000 pounds of a chicken product that may contain salmonella. the chicken product, a paste-like substance was not sold in stores. it was sold the institutions. it's been linked to illness in a tennessee prison where 17 people became ill. the spotlight wasn't on the cars. at the north american auto show. gm's mary barra, the first woman tapped to lead the awe toe maker stole the show. she said she hopes to pursue young people go after science careers.

there will be strong winds and mountain snow across the rockies and the plains. some snow is possible from the dakotas to michigan today. rain moves into the tennessee valley and southern appalachians, and temperatures will be up to 15 degrees above average in much of the northeast. in sports now, the nfl is down to its final four teams. a weekend full of football wrapping up last night. peyton manning throws two touchdowns and gets them out to a lead. it comes up short. denver wins, 24-17. it's manning's first postseason victory since undergoing neck surgery and missing an entire year but he says he wasn't even thinking about that. >> i really was not. you know, what's weighing on my mind is how soon i can get a bud light in my mouth. that really is priority number one. it was an intense game and up and down and a lot of emotions.

>> this will be manning's fifth trip to the afc championship game, but his first as a denver bronco. and the san francisco 49ers are headed to their third straight nfc title game. quarterback colin kaepernick throws a first half touchdown pass and then runs for another score in the second half as the niners top the panthers in carolina, 23-10. so here are the final matchups with a trip to super bowl xlviii on the line. in the nfc san francisco travels to seattle to face the seahawks. seattle won both prior meetings of these teams this season. and the afc championship game pits tom brady and the patriots against peyton manning and the broncos. that game can be seen right here on cbs on sunday at 3:00 p.m. eastern. one of the williams sisters is already out of the australian open. 33-year-old venus fell to ekaterina makarova in three sets.

of course, these awards aren't just about the silver screen. it was a big night for television too. "breaking bad" star bryan cranston won best actor and the show won best drama series. adam samberg won best comedy series "brooklyn nine nine." which also won best comedy. this morning the faas this morning the faa is investigating why a southwest airlines flight landed at the wrong airport in missouri last night. it was supposed to land at branson airport but instead went to a much smaller airport seven miles north of there. the flight from chicago was carrying 129 people. the plane landed without incident. and at least one person is dead and four others are missing in an australian wildfire. the fire has destroyed 46 homes outside perth. strong winds whipped the flames more than 60 feet high. hundreds of firefighters are battling the blaze in the rugged hills. several were treated for heat exhaustion. over the weekend an anonymous bidder won the opportunity to hunt an endangering species, the african black rhino. it sold for a record sum of $350,000.

as don dahler reports, the organizers of the controversial auction say the money will go to save the species. >> reporter: there are fewer than 5,000 of black rhinos in the world. the african nation of anybody ya is home to almost 2,000 of them, which is why it's hard to believe that killing any rhinos is a good thing. to raise money for its anti-poaching and conservation program they permit hunting. this year one auction was handled under tight security by the safari club. >> 100% of the proceeds from the sale will go directly to the anybody ya wildlife trust, which is their trust fund for concentration. 100% will be earmarked just for black rhino conservation. >> reporter: the unnamed winner

paid $350,000 which beat the old report of $233,000. culling herds of older animals is common. carter says the mature rhino has been killing other rhinos. >> wildlife does not take care of itself. it costs money to take care of wildlife. >> reporter: but jeffrey flocken of the international fund for animal welfare says this does more harm than good. >> it well may be one of those older animals that's no longer breeding, but it's not about the individual. it's about the message we're sending in the world that these rare animals are worth more money dead than alive. >> reporter: although they've been permitting this for years, protesters were airing their anger. >> i'm outraged as a senior citizen that they're going to kill the old bull. what is his right? it's not a sport unless the bull receives the first crack at it. >> reporter: the club says they've received numerous death threats and have turned them over to the fbi. don dahler, cbs news, new york. coming up on the "cbs this
