this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, january 20th, 2014. good morning. good to be with you on this martin luther king jr. day. i'm anne-marie green. this morning folks in tupper midwest are waking up to another round of arctic-like cold following a brief warmup. the subzero temperatures are moving down from canada and headed south and east. the effects are already being felt. lauren casey of our minneapolis station wcco has more on our frigid weather. >> reporter: here in minneapolis, the highs were 30, high by our standards. temperatures will plummet into the single digits here by lunchtime today, windchills to 40 and possibly 50 below by tonight. tomorrow night lows will be in the single digits in places like new york and philadelphia, highs on wednesday across the

northeast will be in the evens and 20s, and only in the 30s as far south as atlanta. is this the return of the polar vortex? well, kind of. the polar vortex is an area of low pressure in the upper atmosphere. it typically hangs out in the arctic regions but not too uncommonly in the wintertime it will dive down into the u.s. dragging frigid air along with it as we experienced earlier this month. in the case this week the polar vortex will send out little pieces of energy and have us bundling up. an earthquake struck in new zealand this morning but so far there are no major reports of damage. the quake was centered about 70 miles northeast of the capital wellinton. it was strong enough to trigger rock slides, close roads, and cause some damage. a two-on the eagle sculpture from the hobbit movie at the wellington airport crashed to floor bus no one was hurt.

than in other games in the recent past. anne-marie? >> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. state tv says iran has begun uranium enrichment this morning. it's part of a landmark six-month deal brokered in november. in exchange the u.s. and other world powers will ease sanctions. talks will continue in hopes of reaching a permanent deal. and peace talking in syria are in jeopardy this morning. the main opposition says it won't attend because iran was invite. tehran is a top ally of president bashar al assad and the u.s. has alsz objected saying iran has not agreed to the preconditions. they call for a created traditional body to govern syria. on friday a suicide bomber and two gun men laid siege on a kabul restaurant popular with westerners, kill 2g 1 people. the taliban claimed

responsibility. it was the deadliest attack on foreign civilians since the afghan war started 13 years ago. as charlie d'agata reports, three americans were among the victims. >> reporter: friends and family of lexy camerman have described the 27-year-old chicago native as smart, strong, stubborn, and fearless. she took the job at the american university of afghanistan less than a year ago, her family said in a statement, to help the young women of afghanistan get an education and take their rightful place as leaders in afghan society. her american colleague alex an dross peterson only recently joined the university as a professor. university president michael smith spoke of their courage and sacrifice. >> we have a saying here in afghanistan that -- among internationals, that if you're here, you're here by choice, and that's especially true for these two people. they wanted to be here in

afghanistan, not somewhere else, and they wanted to make a difference in young people's lives. >> reporter: american basra hasan was also trying to make a difference in her work for unicef. afgh afghans held a rally. they laid flowers outside a restaurant where the bombing and shooting rampage kill 2d 1 people. the taliban said the attack was in revenge for an air strike. these are military handout pictures of the operation in question. the military's launched an investigation regretting that several civilians had been accidentally killed in app air strike that afghan and u.s. forces came under heavy gunfire from taliban, firefighters firing on the compound. the attack at the restaurant came two days later. whether they were able to coordinate that quickly or just used the air strike as an excuse

the country's president froze ties with the european union and turned toward russia. this morning the office of governor chris christie is denying another round of bully politics. the mayor of hoboken dawn zimmer says the christie administration tied superstorm sandy relief aid to her support for the support of a real estate project. marlie hall is here in new york with details. marlie, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. zimmer says this ultimatum from the christie administration was delivered in may of last year, seven months after her city was devastated by the monster storm. the message says zimmer was delivered by new jersey's lieutenant governor. >> the lieutenant governor pull med aside and said essentially you've got to move forward with the rockefeller project, this project is really important to the governor. and she said that she had been with him on friday night and that this was a direct message from the governor.

forecast in some cities around the country. new york, partly sunny, 44 degrees the high. miami will be sunny but snow showers in chicago. dallas can except sunshine, and los angeles as well. in sports the matchup for super bowl xlviii is set. the nfc championship game, the seattle seahawks hosting the san francisco 49ers, seattle trailing 17-16 in the fourth quarter when they take a big risk. on fourth and seven, russell wilson hits jermaine kearse for a 35-yard touchdown. san francisco tries to take the lead in the final minute of play, but seattle's richard sherman deflected the pass away from michael crabtree in the end zone. it's intercepted. stealing a 23-17 win for the seahawks. after the game sherman had harsh words for his opponent. >> i'm the best one in the game. when you try me like crabtree,

that's the result you're going to get. don't you ever talk about me. >> and in a postgame interview seemingly calmer, sherman was asked what he meant by the outburst and he didn't back down. >> i was making sure that everybody knew that crabtree was a mediocre receiver, mediocre, and when you try the best quarter in the game with mediocre receiver, that's what happens. game. >> seattle heads to the super bowl for just the second time in the team's 38-year history. in the afc championship game the denver broncos take care of new england. peyton manning takes care of them with 400 yards and two touchdowns. denver wins, 26-16. manning returns to the super bowl for the third time in his career but the first time since undergoing a career-ending neck surgery. >> we've definitely come a long way in two years bouncing back

they were driven there by fishermen during a controversial annual hunt. as terrell brown reports it's drawing condemnation from activists and concerns from the u.s. ambassador. >> reporter: this video reportedly captures the events in the cove at japan. fishermen have rounded up a group of 250 bottle-nosed dolphins. paul watson of the controversial "sea sha ""sea shepherd"" believes many of these dolphins will eventually be slaughtered. >> why is this happening? >> the only reason it's happening is because of demand from marine aquariums around the world. it's really dolphin enslavement just for the amusement of people. >> reporter: they say aquariums will pay about $150,000. only a dozen will be used. the rest will be killed and the meat sold. the most valuable in the

a group of whales beached in new zealand are back in the water this morning. more than a hundred volunteers helped the stuck pilot whales swim again. on the shore they hydrated the whales and dug drains in the sand so they could breathe. of the 70 stranded, 46 are back in the ocean. and here's another look at this morning's top stories. more arctic-like weather is spreading across the midwest this morning, heading south and east. single-digit readings will engulf the area tonight with dangerous windchills. and the mayor of hoboken says the government of chris christie threatened to with hold funds from superstorm sandy. residents in west virginia haven't given the all clear to drink the water after a chemical spill earlier this month, but not everyone's rushing to the

faucet. jeff pegues reports. >> reporter: when matilda murray turns on the water in her home, this is how it looks. she lives here with her husband and five children. everyone from the water company to state health officials are telling her and hundreds of thousands of others here that the water is safe. >> looks pretty nasty. i won't let my kids drink it. >> reporter: in the charleston area the water supply was contaminated on january 9th. since then water company tests have determined that there are acceptable levels of the chemical mchm in the water. but no one really knows yet how harmful the substance used to clean coal is to humans, and that has raised questions about how the state of west virginia regulated heavy industry. senator joe manchin is co-sponsoring legislation to help strengthen oversight. >> are industries needs addressed more in west virginia
