player is responding to his critics. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning this is the "cbs morning news" for this thursday, january 23rd, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the aftermath of that massive winter storm that stretched from kentucky to new england. in its wake the storm leaves a bitterly cold layer of weather that stretches from north to south. this morning there are freeze and winter weather warnings from texas to florida. now, during the height of the storm, the wind-driven snow blew into and through this amtrak train in baltimore. it looked like a blizzard inside the passenger cars. besides massive travel delays, the storm and bitter cold is driving up the price of natural gas and propane. and at the sight of the super bowl, metlife stadium in new jersey, a dress rehearsal of sorts. some 1,300 workers cleared the snow. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says the

brutally cold weather is not going away anytime soon. >> a storm has come to a close with impressive totals especially in the megalopolis. around boston, up to a foot and a half of snow came down with this one. 11 inches in new york city. that was a daily snowfall record. in philadelphia, over a foot of snow, but it's the third time they've seen over a foot before february 1st. it's never happened in philadelphia before. 4 inches in d.c. it was the biggest in years. now it's about the cold. many, many states with two dozen windchills and advisories as far as arkansas, tennessee, and north carolina, and freeze warnings in effect all the way to the everglades. as we kick off the morning, subzero in boston, near zero in new york, and 30 and 40 below across the upper midwest, chicago, and minneapolis. into atlanta. now, here's app upside-down kind of forecast for you. in juneau, alaska, temperatures in the 40s for the next few days.

big ridge of warmth on the west coast. but colder weather in atlanta, georgia. things looking a bit wild on the weather map. this pattern is going to continue as we look ahead. more outbreaks of cold. another big one arrives as we head into next week. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. meanwhile california is suffering with what may be its worst drought in history. the water shortage is affecting tinder-dry brush is fueling wildfires. a statewide state of emergency has been declared and governor jerry brown has asked everyone to reduce their water consumption by 20%. israel says it's broken up and al qaeda plot to attack the u.s. embassy in tel a viv. this appears that al qaeda leaders were directly involved in plotting an attack inside israel. besides the embassy in tel aviv,

al qaeda planned to attack a jerusalem conference center with guns and kill rescue workers with a truck bomb. secret service said the plan was in the advanced stage. three palestinians who planned allegedly planned the attack have been arrested. former nsa contractor edward snowden is answering questions online today. he remains in russia where he was granted asylum but snowden denies he was working for the russians when he released those classified documents dealing with u.s. surveillance records. a just released cbs news poll finds 58% disapprove of the government collecting phone data. meanwhile 47% believe it's necessary in order to stop terror attacks. marlie hall is here in new york. good morning, marlie. >> good morning, anne-marie. snowden will almost certainly address questions about the top secret information he's revealed so far. edward snowden will answer questions from the public online

today about his role in exposing secret u.s. surveillance programs. one question u.s. officials want to know is how much help did he receive from foreign intelligence sources. >> my questions about his work with chinese and russian intelligence begin once he arrives in hong kong and then when he moved on to moscow. >> wednesday snowden denied he had any help telling the "new yorker" magazine the claims are absurd. a new cbs news survey showed 61% of those polled believe snowden should stand trial for espionage. 23% think he should be granted amnesty, but as the white house reiterated yesterday, that's not likely to happen. >> it is our firm position he ought to return to the united states and face the charges against him. >> but the snowden leaks have forced changes to the way the nsa operates. last week president obama announced the nsa will still collect americans' phone data in the fight against terror, but

the president says agents will now need a judge's approval access it and he no longer wants the agency to store the information. the president says he's trying to balance the need for intelligence while still upholding american civil liberties. snowden is expected to answer questions during a live chat this afternoon on a website free snowden. you can submit questions via twitter using #asksnowden. >> marlie hall in new york. thanks a lot, marlie. well, opposition leaders in ukraine issued an ultimatum. they want the president to call early elections within 24 hours or face more protests. the demand comes amid escalating violence in the capital. at least two protesters have died since the demonstrations began in november. that's when ukraine's president sided with russia and rejected an economic deal with the european union. at the syrian peace talks in

switzerland, the two warring factions are scheduled to meet separately with the u.n. negotiator. it's still unclear if the two sides are willing to meet tomorrow when serious negotiations are to begin. at the opening session yesterday they called on president assad to step down. the president said that's not happening. president obama has created a task force to respond to sexual assault on american college campuses. the white house released a report yesterday that found one out of five female students is assaulted, but just one in eight victims reports it. president obama said sexual assault is an affront to basic humanity. >> sexual violence is more than just a crime against individuals. it threatens our families, it threatens our communities. ultimately it threatens the entire country. >> the report says sexual

assaults are triggered by drinking and drug use often at parties. he was shot dead for texting in a movie theater. now we're hearing from the man's widow for the first time about the day that tore her family apart. ko im reports. >> reporter: nicole oulson sobbed during her news conference wednesday. the young mother was sitting next to her husband chad last week when another moviegoer, a retired police captain, started arguing with chad because he was texting during previews. >> just to think that in the blink of an eye my whole world just got shattered into a million pieces and now i'm left trying to pick them up and put them all back together. >> reporter: witnesses said the gaumt between chad and the suspect curtis reeves began after someone threw popcorn. nicole said it is just unimaginable that her date turned so tragic. >> i was so excited to spending the day with the love of my life at a place of entertainment, you know, family entertainment. >> reporter: according to

an eruption trigger large lava bubbles causing them to burst at the surface. nearly a dozen strong earthquakes have been below kilauea in the last 24 hours. on the "cbs moneywatch" now, job cuts at target, and a raiders cheerleader cries unfair play. wendy gillette is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, wendy. >> good morning, anne-marie. target is laying off 475 workers an leashing another 700 positions unfilled. the retailer says the cuts are not connected to the data breach affecting up to 110 million customers. also on wednesday target said it will stop offering health insurance to part-time employees on april 1st. asian stocks were mostly lower on fears of a manufacturing slowdown in china. tokyo's nikkei lost nearly 1%. hong kong's hang seng fell 1.5%. stocks ended mixed on wall street with earnings reports from some tech giants' disappointing investors. the dow tumbled 41 points while the nasdaq gained 17. netflix waited until after the markets closed to release

its earnings. report that beat analysts' expectations. the video service added 2.3 million u.s. subscribers and earned $48 million in the last quarter. that's up from just 8 million during the same period in 2012. revenue surged 24% from 2012 to almost $1.2 billion. activist apple investor carl icahn tweet thad he scooped up $500 million worth of stock. icahn boosted his holdings to more than $3 billion. icahn also blasted apple's board saying the company's doing its shareholders a disservice by not significantly increasing its stock buyback. bernie madoff, the man who orchestrated a a multi-million-dollar ponzi scheme, reportedly suffered a heart attack in prison. he e-mailed the network to say he was hospitalized land month but he's back serving his

showers today, but sunny in both atlanta and st. louis. morning snow in denver and morning fog in seattle. two sisters have a second shot at life thanks to a rare transpla transplant. they both now share lungs from the same donor. omar villafranca reports. >> reporter: they're sisters but have two different personalities. >> i think i'm more mellow. >> reporter: in the last two years both sisters started to develop breathing problems. >> i started to cough every time i talked, every time i laughed. >> reporter: doctors told them they needed lung transplants, so the sisters moved from santa barbara, california, to houston, texas, and waited for donors. >> chances are they both wouldn't have made it the next 60 or 90 days. >> reporter: that bad? >> oh, yeah. >> reporter: like all siblings,

they argued who should get the lungs first. >> it was painful to watch her cough. i could live with the coughing but she couldn't live without the oxygen. >> reporter: but earlier this month came a match for both anna and erma. each sister would get one lung from the same donor. it was the first time houston methodist hospital performed such a surgery. before the surgery anna was always coughing, and erma couldn't make it from the bed to the bathroom without losing her breath. now both sisters are able to do something they both love. [ singing ] >> reporter: the surgery was a success. >> we became triple times closer. we're sisters, we're jehovah witnesses, and we have one lung. >> reporter: in the few months anna and erma plan to go back home and serenade their families for years to come. omar villafranca, cbs news,

here's ather here's another look at this morning's top stories. former nsa contractor edward snowden denies he was working for russia when he released thousands of classified documents about u.s. surveillance efforts. today snowden answers questions online from russia. and recovery efforts continue from that massive snowstorm that snarled an area from kentucky to new england, but the bitterly cold dangerous air that came with the storm could last for days. on the west coast, there's a warming trend. in the coming days, temperatures are expected to reach 80 degrees in los angeles, and that is bad news for the nhl's first regular season outdoor hockey game in a warm weather city. carter evans reports. >> reporter: no one is feeling the heat in los angeles as much as dan craig.

when the nhl planned this, what were you expecting weather-wise? >> we were expecting -- the weather trend is usually 62 to 68. >> reporter: if you'd known it was going to be this hot, would you be here? >> no, we wouldn't have said 80 degrees. >> reporter: craig is the national hockey league's ice guru. the canadian is in charge of the 60,000-square-foot ice rink built on dodger's stadium. this video shows two weeks of construction. >> this engineering feat of this is second to none. >> reporter: thin layers of watter are frozen over aluminum panels and slowly built up to regulation ice. it's kept as cold as possible to 22 degrees by a massive refrigeration truck but the only thing between the ice and the sun is a reflective blanket, what temperatures can it handle? >> the truck was designed to handle 75 degrees. >> reporter: 75 degrees hotter.
