will hammer the west to new england. it should not affect this sunday's super bowl. in iowa a semi ended up dangling over a bridge. # it spilled a truckload of tangerines. police say the icy roads caused the driver to lose control. in the south things are slowly returning to normal after that paralyzing storm. last night georgia's governor extended the state of emergency through sunday. mark strassmann has more now from atlanta. >> reporter: some of the 2,000 drivers who abandoned their cars during atlanta's storm reclaimed them thursday. other georgians went looking for answers. >> who is really to blame is the question. >> reporter: callers on atlanta talk radio faulted city and state leaders for not being prepared. >> i believe that the governor is responsible. >> the buck stops with me. i accept the responsibility for it. >> reporter: georgia governor nathan deal had defended the city's response for two days, but he defended thursday that he

had not followed closely the changing forecast. # >> i did not know it had been upgraded and that a more serious warning had been issuing. >> at 3:20 monday afternoon the national weather service put out a winter storm warning, 1 to 2 inches in northern central georgia but overnight into tuesday morning it included all of metro atlanta and its 5 million residents. # kasim tweeted, atlanta, we are ready for the snow. it began to fall around 11:00 a.m. soon after the governor tweeted this photo of him presenting mayor with a portrait as mayor of the year. # the gridlock and accidents made it impossible to treat the roads with salt. children spent the night in schools. stranded commuters in store aisles and their cars. >> yes, we did not have adequate preparation to encounter the storm as it came in the time frame in which it came.

ye, i accept responsibility for that. >> reporter: bogan mitchell had to abandon his car and walk home on the ice. # you don't think they took attention? >> i don't think they took it seriously. >> reporter: the head of the management called the lack of planning for the storm a terrible mistake. he and his boss, the governor, both promised that next time would be different. mark strassmann, cbs news, atlanta. well, this morning the centers for disease control is investigating another outbreak of illness on board a u.-based cruise ship. susan mcginnis is in washington with the details. susan, here we go again? pgood morning.e-marie. according to the cdc, this is the third such outbreak on a u.s.-based cruise ship this year. this time it's the "caribbean princess" operated by the princess cruises that returned to port early. they got sick and cdc inspectors are set to board the ship this

morning. # the "caribbean princess" docked last night more than a day earlier than scheduled. the ship hat left the port of houston on january 25th with more than 2,000 people onboard bound for the western caribbean. by yesterday afternoon an outbreak of highly contagious norovirus had struck and the ship returned to port. two weeks ago kimberly cannon was on the same ship and caught the same virus. >> the nausea to the bathroom to the throwing up. >> reporter: earlier this week it was royal caribbean's "explorer of the sea" that was forced to cut short its cruise. # nearly 700 people got sick with the norovirus. >> there are millions of people around the world who get the flu and sick every day and noro just happens to be one of those highly contagious things that

has the likelihood to spread faster on a ship. >> reporter: "explorer of the seas" is expected to start out today. after being sanitized. now the cdc is going to oversee the sanitation of the ship before it sets sail tomorrow. the cruise line is blamed for fog for the reason it left early. it's offering passengers a 20% credit toward another cruise. anne-marie? >> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. amanda knox has been found guilty again. yesterday an italian appeals court reinstated her murder conviction for killing her roommate in 2007. they also tacked on two and a half years to her 26-year sentence. knox was not in court when the verdi verdict was read. she's been in seattle ever since her first conviction was overturned. knox issue add statement saying

she was frightened and saddened by the verdict and calls it unjust, but her legal battle is far from over. >> it still has to go in front of italy's high court for a final world which could come sometime in the summer or early next year. >> if knox's conviction is upheld it would be the state department's decision to turn her over to the italian authorities. prosecutors say zdzhokhar tsarna tsarnaev, they will seek the death penalty. it allows him to seek a plea deal for a life sentence. adriana diaz has more. >> reporter: attorney general eric holder says tsarnaev should pay for the bombings. tsarnaev and his brother tamerlan were seen on surveillance before the blasts. they were carried pressure cooker bombs. in court documents prosecutors ces

cesar scesasay say tsarnaev acted in a cruel manner. tamerlan tsarnaev was killed along with an m.i.t. officer. he surrendered later. joe hart was seriously wounded and surrendered hours later hiding in a suburb in a boat. inside the boat police found an alleged confession n which he said the attacks were in response to u.s. military action in muslim countries. boston's mayor supports to decision and honors the victims of the attack. >> today my thoughts are with the families of richard, lindsey lu, krystle campbell, shaun collier, and the brave survivors whose lives have been forever changed by the events of april 15th, 2013. >> reporter: tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty. # no trial date has been set. adriana diaz, cbs news. well, new evidence suggests the u.s. economy continues to improve. # it grew 3.2% from october to

december of last year. anthony mason takes a look at the numbers. >> the u.s. economy may finally be gaining momentum. the growth rate in the second half of last year, 3.7%, was the strongest in a decade. is this economic growth sustainable? >> it looks sustainable to me. >> carl rig a donna is an economist for deutsche bank securities. >> it looks like the private sector is finally getting some legs. businesses are coming back. they're comfortable in investing in equipment and adding workers more aggressively. >> shoppers led the way. # consumer spending was more than expected, up 3% in the fourth quarter. the economy's greatest headwinds came from washington. government expenditures plunged 1 12.6% because of the government shutdown and cutbacks by congress. it would be larger. >> definitely. >> the shutdown and spending

cuts knocked a full point off of growth. gdp would have been 4.2% instead of 3.2%. anthony mason, cbs news, new york. well, on the "cbs moneywatch" now, yahoo! accounts are targeted by a cyber attack and a stroller recall. # joya dass has that and more. good morning. >> good morning, everyone. asian stocks dipped on a rising yen and tokyo's nikkei lost a half a percent following a two-month low. # hong kong's hang seng index is closed for a holiday. a fourth quarter earnings reported higher. the dow was up 109 points on thursday. the nasdaq gained 1 point. add yahoo! to companies who have been hacked. the e-mails of customers have been stolen. it has. said how many have been affected. it's the second largest service in the world. they say it highlights the

importance of changing passwords regularly. >> it may soon cost more to use amazon. the world's largest online retailer is considering a $20 to $40 increase in its prime service. it offers free two-day shipping on most items. amazon says it has not raised the price of prime in nine years. toyota is suspending sales of six of its most popular models heated seats due to the risk of fire. they include certain camry, avalon, sienna, and tacoma models. from the years 2013 to 2014 as well as the 2014 corollas and tundra. toyota says the fabric on the seats does not meet safety standards. no word on how long it will take.

at the gop's retreat in maryland on thursday, house speaker john boehner said his proposals include a path to legal status for 11 million people who enter the u.s. illegally, but he also said a key issue must be addressed. >> we can't begin the process of immigration reform without securing our borders and the ability to enforce our laws. everyone in our conference understands that's the first step in terms of meaningful reform of this problem. >> conservative republicans who dominate the house are rejecting the proposals. they are opposed to giving legal status to illegal immigrants. and congressman henry waxman of california is retiring at the end of the year after four decades in the house. waxman established himself as a leading liberal in congress. he was a champion of environmental causes, challenged the smoking industry, and helped craft president obama's health care overhaul.

thunderstorms. chicago, cloudy and partly sunny in dallas. mostly cloudy in l.a. today. time now for a check of the national forecast. heavy snow will fall across the rockies. 1 to 2 feet is possible for higher elevations. about 8 inches for lower elevations. the southwest will be windy with blowing dust. a band of snow is expected from nebraska to ohio. scattered showers will fall from arkansas to western sections of kentucky and tennessee and the northeast will be mainly dry. in sports now, the golden state warriors put an end to the los angeles clippers' four-game winning streak. david lee had 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the warriors dominated the clippers. stefphen curry also scored 22 points and handed out seven assists as golden state beat the clippers, 111-92. in indianapolis, they handed the pacers their second home loss of the season.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. washington, partly sunny today and also partly sunny in atlanta. in st. louis, a mix of snow and rain. denver, occasional snow and showers in seattle. here's another look at this morning's top stories. the south is recovering from that crippling storm. in atlanta drivers are finally retrieving their abandoned cars. georgia's governor nathan deal accepts responsibility for the slow response. and a nasty outbreak on another cruise ship. a virus sickened more than 160 passengers on the "caribbean princess." the ship cut its cruise short and returned to houston. former first lady laura bush says the time may be right for a major change in the role of a first lady, perhaps that of a working wife. the wife of the president may

have an established career and should be able to keep it. >> the interesting question really is not should they receive the salary but should they be able to work for a salary at their job that they might have already had, and i think that's what we'll have to come to terms with. >> she says if there were a male presidential spouse, she could imagine him continuing his career as well. and a polar bear cub at the toronto zoo is seeing snow for the first time. new pictures show the 12-week-old playing with the snow. she had been raised indoors since she was born and she's the only surviving cub of three born in november and perhaps the only one enjoying the weather. and a fat cat in arizona is a fat cat. this is meatball. he weighs in at 36 pounds. now, workers at the arizona animal shelter where he lives say they'll have to get that weight down before making him available for adoption. he's still cute, i think.

amid a worsening drought in california, governor jerry brown is urging people to take short showers and turn off the water while they're brushing their teeth. the lack of rain is putting a strain on reservoirs that serve the state. ben tracy shows us around lake mead in nevada. >> reporter: when you head out in nevada on lake mead, the first thing you notice is this white line. that's where the water used to be. what did this look like a decade ago? >> this was all under water. boats were everywhere. there was a whole marina here. she said the drought began 14 years ago. satellite photos show the colorado river which feeds lake mead is drying up, so the lake is rapidly sinking.

islands are growing and boats are floating far from where they once were. how critical a point are we at? >> it's a pretty critical point. theweight at which our weather patterns are changing is so dramatic that our ability to adapt to it is really crippled. >> reporter: lake mead was created by the hover dam in 1935. it provides water for 20 million people in southern nevada, southern california, and arizona. since 2000, the lake has lost 4 trillion gallons of water. this bathtub ring is going to get bigger. lake mead is expected to drop at least another 20 feet this year. if it does, that could trigger automatic cuts to the water supply for nevada and arizona. that would hit las vegas hard. 90% of the area's water comes from the lake. at least one of the city's two intake pipes could soon be above water. so to save the water supply, nevada is rushing to build a

third intake even deeper. these concrete slabs are being lowered 650 feet underground where a massive drill is creating a three-mile-long tunnel, 1 inch per minute. the project should be finished next year and cost $817 million. j.c. davis is the project's spokesperson. >> we're really scrambling to make sure this intake is done in time before we lose our first intake. without lake mead, there would be no las vegas. >> reporter: despite its wasteful reputation, las vegas actually reuses 93% of its water. it's paid homeowners $200 million to rip up their thirsty lawn. the city added 400,000 people last decade but cut its water use by 33%. >> all of us are in it together and all of us are either going to survive this or all of us are going to feel the consequences. >> reporter: the consequences of a western resource in retreat. ben tracy, cbs news, lake mead.

it's nearly 4:30. and we're going to begin with breaking news. flames shot out of a home overnight in santa clara on the north side on avenita de lago east of the 49ers new football stadium. four people were inside at the time the one person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the fire gutted the home and charred the car in fact driveway. it took 40 minutes to put the fire out. we have traffic and weather. the rain s gone. >> tapering off now. still a couple of leftover showers sliding eastward. you can see the rain making its way up to the sierra nevada. lots of snow into the high country. we might have more showers this weekend. we'll talk about that coming up. >> it's "friday light" for all bay area roadways wide open at the bay bridge toll plaza but we are just getting word of an accident in pleasant hill area off highway 24. i'll have details of "kcbs traffic." thank you very much, liza. now more than ever we need to save every drop of wat
