this is the "cbs evening news." >> glor: good evening, everyone, i am jeff glor with the western edition of the broadcast, and even if you didn't know the name you recognize the face, and work. philip seymour hoffman was one of the most accomplished actors of his generation and today we learned his life came to a sudden end at the age of only 46, hoffman was found dead inside his new york city apartment this morning. we begin with -- in manhattan's west village. >> reporter: more than 100 people gathered outside to celebrate at the actor's apartment this afternoon. cbs confirmed he was found unresponsive on the floor of his bathroom at 11:30 this morning. there was a syringe still in his arm and glass seen envelopes in the room which are now being tested for heroin. police sources say someone who knew hoffman called 911 from the apartment after the actor didn't show up where he was supposed to be this morning. as soon as the news broke, there was an outpouring of grief from colleagues and fans across the country.

in a statement his family said, we are devastated by the loss of our beloved phil, and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone. this is a tragic and sudden loss. >> scotty, i want to kiss you on the mouth. >> no! >> philip seymour hoffman made more than 50 films and had remarkable depth and skill as an actor. known more for his rumpled side character than being a leading man, he often stole a movie as he kid in the 2,000 film, "almost famous." >> we are uncool. for women will always be a problem for guys mike he was. >> he was nominated for best actor three times, most recently for his standout role in 2012 film, "the master." >> i am a writer, a doctor, a newer physicist, a philosopher, but above all i am a man. >> and one of the best actor won the prize for his portrayal of truman capote in the film

"capote," but throughout his career hoffman was tortured by his struggles with drug addiction and talked about it openly to steve kroft on 60 minutes in 2006. >> so this was drugs or alcohol or both? >> ah, yes, all of that stuff. yeah. i couldn't keep my hand off of it, yeah, yeah. i liked it all. yeah. >> and why did you decide to stop? >> you get panicked. you get panicked. it was-- i was 22 and i got pan milked for my life. >> reporter: hoffman had reportedly checked him, himself into rehab this past month after being sober for 23 years he shared three children with is parnter mimi donald, as for he shared three children with his partner, mimi o'donnell, who is a costume designer.

as for his work, he almost finished shooting mocking jay the final installment of "the hunger games" trilogy yesterday the studios says they will finish the film. >> anita thank you very much. we will move now to america's biggest sporting event of the year in what may be the most hyped super bowl ever. it is the first one in a cold weather climate, fans have come to new jersey and new york from across the country and so has an extraordinary security operation. >> reporter: for one day only, east rutherford new jersey has become the sixth largest municipality in the state. 80,000 super bowl fans plus thousands more security officers and support staff now pack the stadium built here. stadium built here. many roads lead to metlife stadium but fun fans will be on them. only 12,000 people have parking passes. >> the rest are a being made to use mass trance sits. the special nfl bus is taking people from midtown manhattan are sold out. the six-mile trip costs, costs $51, the same as bus fare from new york to washington, dc. >> you know, i don't have to drive and wa worcester i are abt how we are getting and getting

>> glor: don dahler, thank you very much. there is word tonight that a new jersey governor's chris christie's staff who was under subpoena in the bridge controversy resigned on friday, the news capped another day of debate over governor christie and now, and those now infamous lane closures, here is terrell brown. >> it was supposed to be the new jersey governor's big moment at the big game. >> but today chris christie and his allies are pushing back hard against allegations he lied to his constituents. former new york mayor rudy giuliani defended christie on face the nation. >> of course if the governor didn't tell the truth he is in serious trouble we all know that but shouldn't jump to that

conclusion until there is evidence to suggest that. >> the firestorm started friday when a lawyer for david wildstein a former port authority official at the center of the controversy claimed evidence existed that the governor knew more about the lane closures on the george washington bridge than he publicly has acknowledged and in a scath scathing page and a half memo they took aim at wildstein's credibility noting that at the 16-year-old did he sued over a local school board election and he was publicly accused by his high school social studies teacher of deceptive behavior. wildstein could not be reached for comment today but he is yet to reveal the evidence his attorney claims to have. and christie has repeatedly denied he knew anything about the closures until after they happened. >> i knew nothing about this. and until it started to be reported in papers about the closures but even then i was told this was a traffic study. >> terrell brown, cbs news, new york. >> glor: ecuador's tungurahua,
