celebrating. seattle has become legendary very quickly for its noisy boisterous fans, and the 12th man came to jersey yesterday and gave them the home field advantage. >> waiting for the kick. off we go. >> reporter: some thought it could have been a coronation for peyton manning, but just 1 seconds into the game it was clear. seattle would reign supreme. >> it's snapped over the head of peyton manning. >> reporter: a bad snap resulted in a safety the fastest score in super bowl history. after the game, manning blamed the confusion on the crowd noise. >> we weren't sharp. offensively. from the very get-go not the way you want to start a game for whatever reason we couldn't get much going after that. >> reporter: it was all seattle on offense -- >> in for the touchdown. >> reporter: -- defense -- >> pass is too high. >> reporter: -- and special teams -- eventually mvp malcolm

win in franchise history. what are you going to tell him some day about this day? >> that daddy was the champion. and you were here. i have lots of pictures now. >> reporter: lots of pictures and a shiny new trophy to go along with them. >> i love you more than anything. >> reporter: it was billed as the first mass transit super bowl. most of the fans took buses or trains to the stadium. for some of the fans, it was a rocky road. many of them took more than an hour to go the six miles from manhattan to metlife staid up, and then a big message on the jumbotron asking fans to stay in the seat because there was so much congestion waiting to leave for more than an hour. many of the seahawks fans didn't mind that, and ultimately it was the denver broncos hit by the bus. charlie, norah? >> don, thanks. if you're traveling, be aware of problems from a new winter storm. 1,000 flights have been cancelled so far today as a new blast of snow hits large parts of the central and eastern u.s.

in chicago early morning temperatures were below zero. that city is expecting snow tomorrow. heavy, wet snow has been falling this morning in central new jersey. about 50 miles west of new york city. that area could see 8 inches of snow. meteorologist justin drawbic of kyw is out in the severe weather this morning. >> good morning, charlie and norah. if you have plans to fly east this week, you may run into problems at the storm pattern remains very active across the east coast. here in philadelphia coming off high temperatures on sunday in the 50s and this morning, we're dealing with a heavy, wet snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches here in center city. this is a large storm system. we have winter storm warnings in effect from the ohio valley up to new york city. and the highest snowfall amounts will be confined across central and eastern pennsylvania into northern new jersey, with the potential of over 6 inches of snow. and this is a heavy, sweat snow, so the potential for power outages exists. obviously, this will slow down

travel both on the roads and in the air. the weather pattern remains very active. another storm moves in for wednesday. this will bring snow ice and rain to the mid-atlantic and northeast, and then beyond that another storm possible for the upcoming weekend. so very active start to february. charlie, norah, back over to you. >> justin drawbrek in philadelphia. we turn to the death of philip seymour hoffman. this morning, fans friends and family are grieving the sudden loss. kevin spacey calls hoffman's death an unspeakable loss. officials say he died from an apparent drug overdose. kevin anchor is outside the apartment building this morning. >> reporter: good morning, charlie and norah, and our viewers in the west. philip seymour hoffman's body was removed last night from the building right behind me, as the investigation into his death continues. now, envelopes found in the apartment were believed to contain heroin a toxicology report is expected in the coming days.

meanwhile, the world mourns the loss of an acting legend. >> you have to stop this campaign against me. >> reporter: on the big screen and the broadway stage, philip seymour hoffman dazzled audiences for more than two decades. >> for 24 years, people have been trying to kill me! people know how. >> reporter: often turning smaller roles into memorable performances. >> i'm sorry. >> reporter: the famed actor was found dead on his bathroom floor with a syringe in his arm sunday morning at his new york city apartment. the cause of death has not been released, about you it is believed to be a heroin overdose. his body was seen being wheeled out by police last night. in a statement, hoffman's family said we are devastated by the loss of our beloved phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we've received from everyone adding we ask that you respect our previoussy sy privacy during this time of grieving. hoffman appeared in over 50 fill s and was nominated for

four academy awards. he won the oscar for best actor in 2006 for his portrayal of writer truman capote. >> i did everything i could. >> hello. >> hi, how are you? >> reporter: in an interview with "cbs news sunday morning, "hoffman reflected on his craft. >> the thing about acting whenever you think you're good at it something happens and you're, like oh, god, i was really bad. you know what i mean? acting is not something that you get good at and stay good at. acting is something you need to maintain. >> reporter: a couple weeks ago, he attended the sun bans film festival and was scheduled to install in another installment of "the hunger games." >> show them that she's one of us. let them rally behind that. >> reporter: for all of his success, hoffman openly struggled with substance abuse and spoke about his addictions with steve kroft of "60 minutes" in 2006. >> i got sober when i was 22 years old.

yeah. >> so this was drugs or alcohol or both? >> oh, yeah it was all -- it was all that stuff, yeah. anything i could get my hands on. yeah. yeah, i liked it all. yeah. >> and why did you decide to stop? >> you get panicked. you get panicked. it was -- i was 22 and i got panicked for my life. it really was. it was just that. >> reporter: last year hoffman completed a stint in rehab for heroin addiction. he is survived by his partner of 15 years and his three children. philip seymour hoffman dead at the age of 46. >> thanks kevin. and president obama deflected tough questions in a live interview ahead of the super bowl. bill plant looks at how the president defended some of the biggest controversies of his administration. he's at the white house. bill, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, and

good morning in the west. you know, the prediction sitting down before kickoff. this year, it was fox, and the interviewers was bill o'reilly. the 10-minute interview was combative and it highlighted the administration's difficult moments. his signature achievement, the new health care law, came under fire first. >> was it the biggest mistake of your presidency to tell the nation over and over if you like your insurance, you can keep your insurance? >> no bill you've got a long list of my mistakes -- >> no, really, for you, wasn't that the biggest -- >> this is one i regret and i've said i've regretted -- >> reporter: the president was pressed on his support for kathleen sebelius, and the person responsible for the botched rollout of the health care website. why didn't you fire sebelius the secretary in charge of this because she had to know after all those years and that money that it wasn't going to work? >> my main priority is making sure it delivers for the american people. and what we've ended up doing is we've got 3 million people

signed up so far. >> i'm sure that the intent is noble. but i'm a taxpayer. >> yeah. >> i'm paying kathleen sebelius' salary, and she screwed up. you're not holding her accountable. >> i promise you we hold everybody up and down the line accountable. >> reporter: he was asked about benghazi, libya, asking what then defense secretary leon panetta told him on that day. did he tell, secretary panetta, it was a terrorist attack? >> you know what he told me was there was an attack on our compound -- >> reporter: he didn't use the word terror? >> you know, in the heat of the moment, bill what folks are focused on is what's happening on the ground, do we have eyes on it how can we make sure our -- >> i want to get this on the record. did he tell you it was a terror -- >> and i'm answering your question. what he said to me was we've got an attack on our compound. >> no terror attack? >> we don't know yet who's doing it. understand by definition bill when somebody is attacking our compound -- >> yeah. -- that's an act of terror.

>> reporter: the president also denied there were any political motives behind the irs treatment of conservative groups. he told o'reilly these are all settled issues. he accused fox news of keeping them alive. but even so the president said with a big broad smile, he had enjoyed the exchange. charlie, norah? >> bill thank you. of course after that interview, the big game seattle's russell wilson threw two touchdown passes in the second half the young quarterback overcame many obstacles to become a super bowl champion. russell wilson, good morning, and congratulations. >> oh, charlie, hey, norah, this is russell wilson. good to hear from you guys. it's a pleasure man. it was unbelievable. >> and what surprised you most about that game? >> you know, just how great we played all across the board. you know our defense, our offense, special teams was great. and our fans were unbelievable in metlife stadium. >> it makes it easier for a

quarterback if you get an interception that goes for a touchdown, a kickoff return that goes for a touchdown, and a safety? >> yeah, all those things are good. and we've been doing that all year. we've been playing great football all year. you know, it's a team -- it's a team effort, and that's what we've been wanting to do especially the last game of the year. you want to play the best football at the end of the year and that's what we did. >> charlie, gayle, and i were all there. russell, congratulations. it was great to see the intensity with which the seahawks played with defense. how did you prepare? >> i think the same way we prepared all season. you know, after last season and everything, we lost the tough, tough game last season, in the playoffs to atlanta. and we kind of just said hey, you know, everything we do has to be championship calendar. and we have to have a championship offseason, have a 1-0 mindset, and just go after it every day. and that's what we did. and the preparation, we did everything we could. this week was our best week of practice all year.

>> you were a third round draft pick, i think 75th overall. people have said you're too short to be a quarterback, too young, because you're 25 years old. how have you dealt with adversity? what was some advice that your father has given you all along the way? >> first of all, my faith is so strong. god has given me so much talent. you know, i believe that god's given me the right arm, and for some reason, even though i'm 5'11", to make the throw and great decisions on the field, you know, i think to be a great quarterback, you need great leadership, great attention to detail and a relentless competitive nature and that's what i try to bring to the table. i have a long ways to go. i'm still learning and still on the constant quest for knowledge. >> they say it's the willingness to win that made the reason they wanted to go with you as their starting quarterback. let me talk about peyton manning. what do you think happened last night? have you had a chance to talk to him at all since the game was over? >> you know, i have so much

respect for peyton manning and all the things he's done. you know, i got to talk to him at the end of the game, before the game a little bit. >> what did you say after the game, russell? >> i just said thanks for playing against me man, it's an honor. it really is. he's one of the best quarterbacks, if not the best quarterback to play the game. you know, it's just truly an honor. and actually ironically i went to his football camp in 10th grade, and he was my coach. so to be -- to be around him, you know, and to watch his legacy and all the things he done, it's a tremendous honor. >> what did pete carroll say at halftime? >> we had a great halftime routine, just getting ready. he just said to us guys let's bring it. let's have an unbelievable second half. sure enough we came out strong. first the kickoff return. he was electric. and we even played better in the second half. we just -- we just kept playing better and better and better as the game went on. >> congratulations, russell.

"usa today" says a new report shows the abortion rate dropping to the lowest level since 1973 when the procedure became legal. in 2011 the rates fell to an average of 16.9 abortions. ukraine's president returned to work this morning. he had been on sick leave for four days. protesters are demanding his resignation. the "washington post" says china may have taken its biggest step yet to fight air pollution. beijing agreed to disclose detailed information after requests by environmental groups. now 15,000 factories must publicly report air and water

commercials. actors like audi hyundai, and heinz paid 4$40 million for 30 seconds of air time. good morning. >> good morning. >> your team watched 90 ads. they used those dials to figure out which they liked. which one was the best? >> you're right. it was a kinder gentler advertising effort and for some reason ads that have animals have always done well in a super bowl and anheuser-busch has got the gain on ads but this time the ad of the puppy and the horse just so overdid everything else. we had women in the group crying. i want to acknowledge we even had one man in the group who was emotional about it. and that's because it tells a heart-warming story that extends over time. one of the keys in the super bowl, it's not what you do in the first five seconds that matters. it's what you do over the length of the 30 or in this case a

charlie, gayle and norah. a christie appointee who had overseen the lane closure. wildstein resign friday the port authority, the agency in charge of the bridge. facing the threat of prosecution, he is now turning on his former ally suggesting that the governor wasn't forthcoming about his role in the bridge scandal. one day after david wildstein made his allegations, governor chris christie launched a counter attack. his office circulated an e-mail asailing the credibility of his former classmate. among other things, the e-mail said wildstein was publicly accused by his high school social studies teacher of deceptive behavior and david wildstein will do and say anything to save david wildstein. still, the possibility that the governor may have known about the lane closures was enough to subdue even one of his staunchest defender rudy giuliani. >> i think the governor knows the consequences. if he's lying, it's a really bad situation. if he's not lying, then something very unfair is being

this is a kpix 5 morning update. good morning everyone. 8:55 on your monday. time for news headlines. i'm frank mallicoat. police are looking for a stabbing suspect in downtown san francisco. two people stabbed early this morning between piers number five and seven. one person in stable condition. the other suffered life threatening injuries. and also happening today, google is trying something new to provide transportation to its workers who live outside the silicon valley. the internet giant is doing a trial run now on ferry service between alameda and the port of redwood city. google has been running ferry service from san francisco. and today, opponents to building a san francisco water front arena for the warriors are expected to turn in more than 15,000 signatures for a measure that would require the warriors and any other developer to win voter approval
