more winter weather is on the way for millions of americans. the second storm system this week starts its trek across the country. more controversy surrounded chris christie's administration. an aide fired in the george washington bridge scandal refuses to cooperate with an investigation while the new jersey governor continues to say he had nothing to do with lane closures on the bridge. >> did i authorize it? did i know about it? did i approve it? did i have any knowledge of it beforehand? and the answer is still the same it's unequivocally no. a former educator is accused of sexual assault after one of her alleged victims posts their confrontation on youtube. >> you should be so ashamed and so disgusted with yourself. >> i am.

i am. and anti-crash cars. new technology allowing cars to communicate with one another that could reduce deadly communicate with one another that could reduce deadly collisions. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for tuesday, february 4th, 2014. good morning, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning, the second major winter storm of the week is bearing down on the midwest. and headed to the northeast. and if that's not enough, a third, even more severe system is lining up to strike the atlantic seaboard this weekend. today's storm will bring a combination of snow and freezing rain to an area stretching from nebraska to new england. this seemingly never-ending series of storms is affecting business and travel. yesterday's storm made travel difficult at best. in pennsylvania, trucks and cars slipped off roadways in the deep, wet snow.

and many areas in the northeast got 8 inches or more. a state of emergency was declared in new jersey. already today, more than 500 flights have been canceled nationwide. and more than 1300 are delayed. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz has more on this latest weather system. >> that one storm has wrapped up, another one getting started. this is going to drop a lot of snow for a lost of folks over the next couple of days. getting started, it will be moving across the plains and work its way into the midwest and eventually into the northeast. so a lot of states with winter storm advisories and watches, covering every two dozen states, as a matter of fact, everyone dealing with this particular system. timing it out, we start with a storm system in the plains, heavy rainfall moving down from the tennessee valley as we head to the afternoon and evening. snow expanding from cincinnati, to chicago, westward to omaha as we head towards tuesday evening.

and as we head to wednesday, this snow heads to the northeast. new york, much of an icy mix. new york, boston, mainly a snowy event. over towards detroit, there will be snow coming down of course a trickle-down travel effect at the airports. this wraps up wednesday evening. in terms of total snow, 6 to 12, a wide swath, stretching from the northeast back towards the southern great lakes and into the plains. 3 to 6 on either side of that. a couple spots along the way may just get over a foot, another significant winter storm. i'm meteorologist eric fisher. for cbs news. new jersey governor chris christie says his office has been subpoenaed by federal prosecutors in the bridge scandal that's rocked his administration. christie answered questions about the scandal on a radio call-in show, ko im is here with more on that. good morning, ko. >> good morning, anne-marie. christie said he may have heard about the issues, but an aide who allegedly orchestrated the

traffic tieup as political payback isn't talking. the woman at the center of the bridge traffic scandal is keeping her mouth shut. a lawyer for bridget anne kelly says a lawyer for christie's former chief of staff is invoking her fifth amendment rights. kelly will not cooperate with a subpoena from a state legislative committee. >> i know everything i needed to know from a point of employment for bridget kelly when she didn't tell me the truth, and i fired her. >> reporter: an e-mail from kelly last summer cost her her job after ft. lee's mayor refused to endorse christie's erection bid. kelly e-mailed saying "time for traffic problems in ft. lee." a month later, several toll lanes lead to get george washington bridge were closed, creating days of traffic jam. during his monthly radio show on monday, the governor repeated statements he made at a news conversation last month. >> before these lanes were closed, i knew nothing about it. i didn't plan it.

i didn't authorize it, i didn't approve it. i knew nothing about it. >> reporter: christie's office is complying with subpoenas but another former aide linked to the scandal is not. christie says he understands & why. >> people have rights and they're going to exercise those rights as they see fit or a lawyer has advised them to do so. >> reporter: the u.s. attorney's office is also investigating. this was the first time christie took questions since another former aide claims christie knew about the lane closures as they happened. christie said the matter of what he knew when is a game of gotcha. anne-marie. >> ko im in new york, thank you, ko. autopsy results are expected today on actor philip seymour hoffman. hoffman's body was found in his new york city apartment sunday, along with at least four dozen small plastic packet. there was a syringe in his arm. sources confirm some of the packets tested positive for heroin. they were labeled "ace of spades," or "ace of hearts."

further tests will be conducted to determine if the heroin contained additives. syringes and five prescription medications as brook silva braga report, more than 100 people a day die in this country of a drug overdose. >> reporter: the faces of the heroin epidemic include jordan medoff 24-year-old that loved playing the guitar and hitting the gym. >> when i tell people that his addiction started ten years ago, they kind of look at me with shock because he was 14 ten years ago. >> reporter: medoff died of a heroin overdose in september. >> the way this starts is with prescription pills that come out of mom and dad's medicine cabinet so it quickly becomes a $200 a day habit. then someone taps you on the shoulder and says, hey, look, heroin is the same drug, it's only $10. >> reporter: drug experts say the heir win epidemic is getting significantly worse in the suburbs.

here in new york's long island, the death toll is the highest it's ever been. 120 deaths last year. 121 the year before. one reason for the surge in overdoses a deadly mixture of heroin and the prescription drug fentanyl, a powerful painkiller up to 100 times stronger than morphine. in western pennsylvania alone, the heroin/fentanyl mix claimed 25 lives in two weeks. >> i've never seen it this bad. >> reporter: dr. reynolds says lowering the death toll will take better treatment for addicts and less stigma for addiction. and families liked medoffs are pushing even in their loss. brook silva braga. for cbs news, breakneck, new york. on the "cbs moneywatch," the dow cinches deeper and the super bowl attracts a record audience. marlie hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. >> reporter: good morning to you, anne-marie. the new york stock exchange opens in the wake of big losses following a weaker than expected manufacturing report. the dow suffered a triple-digit logs for the seventh time this year.

the dow jones industrials fell 326 points, its worst day in seven months. the nasdaq composite lost nearly 107 points. investors moved into safer assets such as u.s. treasuries. the string of winter storms and unusually cold weather hurt car sales last month. overall, u.s. auto sales slipped 3% in january to just over 1 million. it was the first year-over-year drop since august 2010 but analysts say january was an anomaly. and u.s. sales are on track to rise to more than 16 million this year. asian markets plunged on news of weak manufacturing in china. tokyo's nikkei plummeted more than 4%. hong kong's hang seng dropped nearly 3%. janet yellen was sworn in as the new chairman of the federal reserve. yellen is the first women to lead the fed. she replaces ben bernanke. yellen takes over as the fed begins to scale back its

bonds-buying program. on capitol hill this week, there is a series of hearings concerning the data breach of target and other retailers. today, senior target officials are scheduled to testify at a senate judiciary committee hearing. in a massive theft over the holidays, information was stolen from over 100 million target customers. and, anne-marie, even though it was a blowout, the super bowl set a record for the most watched tv event in u.s. history. it's the fourth time in five years that the super bowl set the record this year, 111.5 million tuned in to see it. anne-marie. >> i'm sure that makes all the advertisers happy who paid several million for 30 seconds of air time there. marlie hall of the new york stock exchange, thanks a lot, marlie. coming up on the "morning news," abuse allegations, a young woman's youtube video accusing a teacher of sexual abuse results in arrest.

well, it certainly looks like fun. watching the rough surf come in off the coast of northern spain, only the people weren't expecting a giant wave to slam into the sea wall. amateur video shows them screaming and running away, but not before getting soaked. waves in some areas were as high as 24 feet. and a car chase in indiana ended with an escaped prisoner being caught. michael david elliot had been on the run since sunday. he broke out of a michigan jail, abducted a woman and stole her car but she got free when they stopped for gas in indiana. he sped off and stole another car. that's when a sheriff spotted it and caught him and the woman was not hurt. a youtube video has led to an arrest.

a former vice principal in california has been charged with sexually abuse two students. a video by the alleged victim accuses her of the crime. it was posted in january and been seen nearly 1 million times the alleged victim claims she was abused from 1997 and 2001, beginning when she was only 12 years old. andrea fuji of kcbs. >> reporter: this is andrea cardosa's booking photo just released after she was arrested and charged with 16 felony contact with two underage girls while a teacher and coach at chemawa middle school and tomas rivera middle school. >> she's going to face it. >> reporter: attorney david ring represents one of the accusers, jamie, who brought the allegation to life through the youtube video. >> you ruined my life, you ruin might childhood, do you realize

bowl champions for the first time in team history. fans gathered outside the team's practice facility to celebrate. the seahawks defeated the denver broncos 43-8 on super bowl sunday. the team's arrival was delayed, though. their plane made an unscheduled stop in minneapolis to deice. seattle quarterback russell wilson stayed behind here in new york. he was a guest of david letterman on monday's edition of "the late show." dave had a question about the seahawks head coach pete carroll. >> coach carroll, does he know what he's doing? >> it's definitely coach carroll. [ laughter ] it's definitely. first of all, he looks like he's 25 out there. he's having so much fin, chewing his gum, running up and down the field all crazy. but, you know, he brings so much to us. is that that funny? >> yeah, it is. >> after the interview, wilson completed one last pass this season to david, of course.

and earlier on monday, super bowl mvp malcolm smith paraded through the main street of walt disney world. smith will see a much bigger crowd tomorrow. that's when the seahawks will have their super bowl parade through downtown seattle. this is the city's first time to celebrate a major pro sports championship since 1979. in the nba now, it looked like the los angeles clippers were about to escape from denver with a two-point win. the clippers leading the nuggets by two points in the final seconds but denver's randy foye gets open at the top of the key and nails a buzzer-beating three-pointer. nuggets win 116-115. the new number one team in college basketball stays unbeaten. trevor cooney tied the school's record with nine three-pointers. he finishes with 33 points. and the orange beat notre dame 61-55. when we return, car communication. we will show you how cars will soon be talking to each other to

a furniture store owner in texas lost a bundle on the super bowl. jim mcingvale bet against the seahawks. he said if they won, he'd give a complete refund to any customer who bought $6,000 worth of merchandise in the two weeks leading up to the game. seattle ended under stuffing denver. mcingvale estimates he will shell out $7 million to cover his bets but he said it was worth it. a new book "just jake" goes on sale aimed at teenage readers. jim axelrod sat down with the young author. >> reporter: jake marcionette is like any basketball-loving

teenager in ponta vedra, california, taking his big shot. except his isn't on the court, it's on the shelves. >> i love writing. >> reporter: "just jake" say humorous take on middle school life as the new kid in town trying not to be bullied. >> i only had one semi friend. his name was nick. and he occasionally sat with me at lunch. >> reporter: he's not the first author this young to publish, although he may be the first to do it this way. >> just typed in how do you get a book published? >> sure. >> and he said, first, you should get a literary agent. >> reporter: 12 years old at the time, he started cold calling her. >> i called her up and she just went on a rant in a way how she's been getting calls, that this isn't the way to do it. >> reporter: like a lot of kids, jake didn't listen so well to the rules. the next call was to dan laza who works for one of the top literary agency, in the world. >> my assistant walked and said there's a kid on a phone.

i said tell me to e-mail me. >> reporter: ten minutes later, a sample was sitting in lazar's inbox. >> i said can i give you a call? he wrote back, sure, call me after lacrosse. >> reporter: which led to a conversation that night most kids don't have with their moms. >> i shouted out, hey, mom, can you come here, i have a contract to look at. >> i said what do you mean there's a contract? he goes, yeah, somebody's interested in the book. we were just freaking out. >> reporter: a month later, jake had a book deal. his agent won't say for how much, only that it's thousands of times more than his allowance. >> this is where i learned to write. >> reporter: jake developed his idea during summer vacations when his mother deborah requires an hour and a half of writing each day. >> were you writing more for you or writing more for the kids your age who might read it? >> i was probably writing more for the kids my age who might read it, just to have them know that they're not the only ones going through it.

traffic and weather. it was kind of cold this morning. >> chilly around the bay area. temperatures down in the 30s and 40s and some clouds though coming our way and you see just off the coastline they got a little storm out there. when do we expect that? that coming up. the overnight roadwork once again at least for another half hour. westbound on the bray bridge. also tell you about the issues heading to the antioch bridge this morning. thank you. and we got the traffic talked about out of the gate here. 4:30. intertate # 0 open again this morning, solano county after the officer-involved shooting. happened just before 8:00 last night near the pend rick road interchange east of dickson. the chp says officers shot is wounded and suspected car thief there after he charged at them. causing a big traffic jam. most lanes reopened by 10:00 p.m. but a couple of eastbound lanes were closed until just a couple of hours ago. it sounds like a movie plot but the fbi says the elaborate
