this morning atlanta is bracing for a potentially devastating winter storm, a brutal combination of heavy snow and dangerous crippling freezing rain and ice that could produce widespread power outages. the severe weather is part of a storm system that stretches from texas all the way to new england. states of emergency have been declareded in atlanta, alabama, north carolina, mississippi, and virginia. the roads in north carolina are already covered with snow. this car right here with five people on board slid down an embankment. so far nationwide more than 2,500 flights have been canceled today. the big concern today in atlanta is ice. up to an inch and a half could coat the city and that could knock out power to hundreds of thousands. omar villafranca is in atlanta. >> reporter: rain is falling in atlanta, but it will soon start freezing over. before it's all done the

national weather service says the storm could be of significant proportions with crippling ice conditions. >> it could keep you inside for several days. >> reporter: that kind of warning from local forecasters has prompted a run for local supplies. generators, winter supplies, and ice melt are selling out. a winter storm two weeks ago paralyzed atlanta and forced thousands of people to abandon their cars on the interstate. officials say this time they'll be prepared. >> we're running those trucks, 12-hour shifts 24 hours a day. >> reporter: in atlantic city there are two dozen cherry picker trucks like this with chains on their tires. as the ice knocks down trees and power lines, they're ready. >> we have a heck of a lot of trees in georgia. when they fall, they brick down the power lines. >> reporter: this is the second round of winter weather to hit the south this week.

yesterday snow and ice fell from texas to north carolina. many of these places will see more bad weather today. omar villafranca, cbs news, atlanta. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz is following the severe weather. >> well, this is major winter storm that's under way. even at this early hour looking at the ice moving in, we already had wintry weather during the day on tuesday. now, this is all on top of what we've already had to deal with. heading through the day, a huge area of freezing rain here. this will be coming down at very quick rates, adding up, creating downed limbs and lines. this will continue through the afternoon, through the evening. some snow will come in on top of it. the snow is creeping up toward washington, d.c., as we head toward this evening where there, too, it could be quite significant. in terms of ice, this could be catastrophic. we're talking the potential for hundreds of thousands to lose power, put a lot of information out on this. the worst, south of atlanta near i-20 to augusta, over to

columbia as well as charlotte. this could be a very destructive storm. power outages that could last for days. then on the northeast side of this a powerful nor'easter gets going. it's from new york down through d.c. over half a foot is looking quite likely. strong winds at the coast and certainly a foot or more for many inland areas. an impactful storm for places like boston, new york, philadelphia, d.c., atlanta, charlotte impacted with lots of cancelled flights already. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. a trial is expected to close today in a charge of a florida money charged with killing a student over music. the defendant michael dunn took the stand tuesday and said he was acting in self-defense, but his fiancee contradicted part of his testimony. >> reporter: he said he feared for his life when he shot and killed davis at this convenience

store in 2012. the confrontation began when dunne asked his teen and friends to turn down their radio. my rear view mirror was shaking and my eardrums were vibrating. and this was ridiculously loud music. >> reporter: he said davis cursed at him and reached for something. >> i look. i'm looking at barrel. he's showing me a gun and he's threatening me. >> reporter: a security camera captured the sound of dunne firing ten shots from a handgun he had in his car. >> oh, my gosh. somebody's shooting. >> reporter: davis was hit three times. >> i'm not going to give my life to anybody. >> reporter: police never found a weapon in the suv. trevor thompson was in the vehicle. >> did you ever see jordan davis threaten the defendant in any way? >> no, sir. >> did you ever see jordan davis threaten the defendant in any

way? >> no, sir. >> reporter: the fiancee testified. >> did the defendant ever tell you he had a weapon in that suv? >> no. >> reporter: dunne and rower drove to their nearby hotel and ordered a pizza. he did not call police. >> you talk about me? >> reporter: and turned himself in only after he learned investigators were looking for him. the jury could start deliberating wednesday afternoon, and if convicted, dunne faces life in prison. manuel bojorquez, cbs news, jacksonville, florida. on the "cbs moneywatch" now, wall street soars on remarks by the new fed chair and barbie poses for the "sports illustrated" swimsuit issue. jill morgan is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. in her first comment janet yellen said the fed will continue to pare down the stimulus economic program. yellen said the economy

continues to improve, but labor market recovery remains far from complete. the dow jones gained 193 points. the nasdaq gained nearly 43. asian markets finished on strong chinese figures. tokyo's nikkei added half a percent. hong kong's hang seng gained pinvestors were also encouraged after the republican controlled house passed a debt ceiling increase. the vote came after speaker john boehner said republicans wouldn't seek any concessions from the white house. the bill would allow the government to borrow normally for another 13 months. that's well past the november elections. the senate could vote on the measure as early as today. graco is at odds with the federal government over a car seat recall. they claim buckles could get stuck with food or drunk.

models 2009 through 2013 could be recalled. another 1.8 million rear-facing infant seats with that same buckle also need to be recalled. graco is refusing because it says infants don't get food or drink on their seats. toyota is recalling nearly 2 million of its prius hybrid cars because of a software glitch that could cause the cars to stall. the recalled vehicles were manufactured between march of 2009 and february of this year. >> and barbie is posing for "sports illustrated." it's a collaboration that's sure to ignite complaint and debate. she'll strike a pose in "sports illustrated" annual swimsuit issue. it includes a four-page advertising feature. the theme of this campaign "unapologetic." anne-marie, i think we'll be talking about this one for a while. >> i think so. unapologetic. maybe that's a message to ken.

the halfpipe, and that's because two-time gold medalist shaun white was denied a three-peat in the snowboard halfpipe. he would have been the first american to ever win gold in three straight olympics, but white crashed and never recovered. he finished fourth and will leave sochi without a medal. it wasn't all bad news for team usa. erin hamlin made history for the women. she won bronze in the luge. it's the first time any american has won a medal in any single luge event in the olympics. and the vermont native overcame a knee injury in 2012 to make it to sochi. here's your medal count. norway leads with 11 medals, followed by canada and the netherlands. united states is tied with russia with seven apiece. today the women's ice hockey will take on canada. the men's hockey tournament is also under way.

forecast in some cities around the country. it will be sunny in both new york and miami, but 27 degrees in new york today. chicago will be cloudy, 25 the high. dallas will be sunny, and sunny in los angeles. french president francois hollande heads to san francisco today to meet with executives from facebook, twitter, and google. last night president obama threw him a lavish state dinner at the white house. it was a star-studded affair with mary j. blige performing. ♪ ain't nobody make me, make me feel this way ♪ >> before the dinner, the two presidents toasted the strong relationship between france and the u.s. in a sting operation nabbed two dozen mobsters on tuesday. seven were arrested in new york. 17 in italy. officials say the suspects had come up with some very clever ways to smuggle drugs. allen pizzey was there for the raid in italy.

>> reporter: fast-moving convoys of police cars swept through the night in a coordinated series of raids. >> follow the cars, follow the cars. >> reporter: fbi agents joined italian police in an operation that was two years in the making. it foiled a plan to smug le drugs and weapons into the port of gioia tauro. the operation is being conducted in the dead of night under strict rules of secrecy because this entire area is infested with the local version of the mafia, which means they literally have eyes and ears everywhere. the raids went off without a hitch or violence. at this modest house, only a couple of guns were drawn as a precautionary measure. the suspect, whose face is blurred on italian police orders, wasn't even handcuffed when he was taken away as his wife watched him passively from the front porch. the fbi agent who could not be identified for security reasons said he was not surprised.

>> it's a cost of doing business and they understand it's generally easier to just get along without creating a problem. >> so creating a problem is bad for business. >> it is. >> reporter: the fbi and italian police teamed up because gioia tauro is a new drug route that runs from south america and back to the u.s. the raid prevented the delivery of cocaine that was hidden in pineapples and shipments of frozen fish. law enforcement officials say the arrested men will face charges in their own countries and the possibility of extradition, and there will be more knocks on the door in the middle of the night. allen pizzey, cbs news, reggio qala bra. in health history, researchers in canada found that the death rates of women who were screened and those who were not were the same. it also says one in five cancers found and treated after a mammogram were not a threat to the woman's health.
