posted from north carolina to the canadian border. at least 21 deaths are blamed on the dangerous weather, including a pregnant woman. she was hit by a snowplow in a parking lot. doctors delivered her baby, who's in critical condition. as of last night over 500,000 homes and businesses remain without power. travel remains treacherous and thousands of flights have been canceled. marlie hall is here in new york. marlie, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. it's been more than 24 hours since this latest winter storm began, and as you can see by the falling snow, it is still here, causing widespread disruptions along the east coast. from baltimore to the big apple, more overnight snow is creating another messy morning. ryan stopped for gas after spending hours on the road. >> i've seen lots of near misses, quickly going from clear roads to ice and snow. >> reporter: this second wave comes on the heels of the foot of snow that piled up in many

areas along the east coast thursday. more than a million homes and businesses lost power during the storm. more than a half million are still in the dark. many schools are still closed but not new york city. mayor bill de blasio defended the decision in the face of complaints from parents and teachers. >> so many families have to go to work. so many members of the family have to go to work, they do not have a choice, and they need a safe option for their kids. >> reporter: the chancellor announced a short while ago that public schools here in the city will be open again, today, and anne-marie, that will likely cause another round of debate and criticism. >> i think so. marlie hall here in new york. thank you, marlie. government offices in the nation's capitol will open today but two hours later than usual. the federal government was shut down yesterday when washington was hit with 9 inches of snow. susan mcginnis is in washington with a look at the economic impact of the storm. susan, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. this weather is dramatically

impacting business and travel already today. about a thousand flights have been canceled. looking at wednesday and thursday combined, 10,000 flights were canceled. this means since the storm began, more than 600,000 passengers have seen their flights canceled. the weather is also adding to a shortage of propane. 5.5 million homes rely on propane for heat. stockpiles have been low, although we do know that prices have started to drop. and this storm could not have come at a worst time for the nation's florists. the delivery trucks are having a hard time getting to florists around the country and this bad weather could also threaten to interrupt some deliveries today of flowers to people's homes. valentine's day, of course, one of the busiest days for the flower industry. also eight division i men's basketball gams were canceled and last night the duke/north

carolina gain was put on hold. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says the storm is headed new york and another weather system is on its heels. >> here we are, val entie's day. maybe you got your sweetheart a shovel or snow blower. i hope so because they'd be putting it to good use. we're putting them to good use this morning and again in the northeast. now, in the early morning hours the snow is winding down here in new york, but we've had overnight snow and thundersnow in many areas and thundersleet extending into new jersey and the philadelphia area. most of the snow heading through the morning hours and into the afternoon heads to the ski areas p maybe the only folks on the map very happy to see this storm. there's another one on the heels of this as we head into safrmtd this will dive down east. we're still in recovery mode. it will bring more snow and cold

to georgia, carolinas and virginia. this will deepen very rapidly as we head into saturday night and this could wrap around some significant snow. highest at risk would be southeastern new england but also snow back into new york, back into philadelphia, and back into d.c. and we'll update this as we get more information today. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. supporters for a ban on same-sex marriage are outraged. a federal judge ruled last night that the voter approved state ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional but u.s. district court judge arenda wright allen issued a stay of her order while it's appealed and that means same-sex couples in virginia cannot get married until the case is resolved likely in the supreme court. now on the "cbs moneywatch," a new option on facebook and a huge gm recall. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with those stories and more. jill, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. consumer advocates are blasting comcast's plans to buy time

warner cable. if regulators approve the $45 bl purchase, they would serve 32 million tv and internet customers. . comcast promises more reliable services and cheaper prices but some critics disagree. >> comcast is a content product. it owns nbcuniversal. so it owns cnbc, msnbc, a lot of stations. and if you give a company that owns a third of the cable market the power to jack up content prices to other cable providers, it becomes a real problem. >> the agreement calls for comcast to pay about $159 per share of time warner cable. that's about a 17% premium over its closing price on wednesday. the deal is expected to close later this year pending regulatory approval. asian markets were mixed on word china's inflation held steady last month. japan's nikkei dropped more than

1% while hong kong's hang seng went up a fraction. here on wall street stocks rose on the heels of some strong earnings reports, and despite weak news on retail sales and unemployment. the dow gained 63 points. the nasdaq finished 39 points higher. general motors is recalling nearly 800,000 compact cars because of a faulty ignition switch. the recall affects chevy owe battle, model years 2005 through 2007 and pontiac g5s from 2007. the faulty switch can shut off engines without warning. if that happens the front air bags may not work in a crash. gm says six people have been killed in a crash related to the problem. facebook users have dozens of options for creating gender profiles. facebook says they've been working with gay, bisexual, and transgender groups.

soared to the top of the standings in the short program. he became the first skater to break the 100-point mark. tonight the 19-year-old will try to win gold in the free state. three members of team usa made history. josh christensen took gold and he was joined on the podium by americans gus kenworthy. and nick goepper. it's the first time the americans have swept the games and the first since 2002. the men's u.s. hockey team got off to a scorching start. paul stastny scored twice in the six-goal onslaught in the game against slovakia. they win the first game, 7-1, but expect things to get harder tomorrow. they'll face russia in what is sure to be a hot ticket. here's your look at the medal tally after thursday's event. norway still leads with 13 medals. the united states and the netherlands are behind with 12

new ones popped up. eric committed to a bigger commitment with francesca at the bridge. >> he just asked me to marry him. >> reporter: the couple's now saving for their wedding, and until then, the lock on the bridge will symbolize their bond. lucy mcdonald, cbs news, paris. well, there is being camera-shy and there's this guy. a diver was taking pictures of a rare giant pacific octopus off the pacific coast of california. the eight-armed creature apparently was not in the mood for the paparazzi, lunged for the camera. the diver's buddy started snapping photos, which seemed to scare off the octopus, and that's a good thing. two daredevils scaled what's going to be the second tall est building in the world and they secretly posted it on youtube.

this valentine's day millions of americans hope to find romance through chocolate and flowers, but one man found his love one frame at a time over his lifetime. dean reynolds shares their remarkable love story. >> this is the rare picture of me meeting hemingway. >> reporter: 91-year-old art shea has been telling stories with his camera for 60 years, working mostly for "life" magazine he captured an amazing roster of subjects from kennedy to ali, from eleanor roosevelt to elizabeth taylor, but page through thousands of stills, and one story stands out. >> this is the first photograph? >> yeah. we were both 20 and it was up in the catskills.

art's focus was often squarely on florence, his wife. capturing her in private moments or public events. his camera would often find her. >> would she say, put that camera away for god's sake. >> yes. she always did it. you know the litany of all true photographers is just one more. >> sure. >> a photograph is a buy greg of a moment. >> they struck a lifetime. >> she's 29. >> she looks about 19. >> that's my favorite picture of her. the photos of their love story are now on display at columbia college in chicago. >> yeah. that was in the '60s. >> the exhibit is called "my florence," a tribute to their 67 years of marriage. >> does it make you feel closer to florence? >> yes, very much so. >> what is the last picture you took of her that is in the show?

>> the picture of her four weeks before she died. >> florence would have been 92 on valentine's day. >> this is the only picture of her really in pain. >> when she got sick, did you two discuss that you were going to continue to photograph her? >> i assigned myself to do her life as i remembered it with the joy, the happiness, and only a touch, a touch of her sickness. >> florence passed away from cancer in august 2012. art says gathering the photos for the show has helped him heal, though not entirely. >> it's very hard to do. she did like this picture quite a bit. florence did say don't cry for me when the time comes because i had a wonderful life, and she did and we did.
