good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, this winter has a lot of folks crying enough already. and this morning, the northeast is getting hit with another storm. light to moderate snow and freezing rain will make for another rough morning commute. it is the latest in a series of storms that's moved in from the midwest. this afternoon, the severe weather will hit new england. in chicago this morning, the order of business will be digging out. up to 8 inches of snow fell there late in the day yesterday. temperatures are expected to climb today. and that could lead to a different kind of trouble. flooding. some residents in flood-prone areas have sandbags out already. an eight-mile stretch of interstate in southwest michigan was shut down following a weather-related pileup. at least 40 cars and 15 trucks were involved in the huge chain reaction crash. the result o whiteout conditions yesterday and icy

roads. six people suffered minor injuries. now, the severe weather has made flying difficult. at best and impossible in many cases over 500 flights in this country have been canceled today. yesterday, over 1300 never got off the ground. marlie hall is here in new york with more on the latest storm. marlie, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning to you. there is no question that this winter season has packed a powerful punch. and it also seems to know a thing or two about timing. commuters all over the northeast are facing yet another nasty morning commute. a winter storm that dumped as much as half a foot of snow in the midwest is now making its way into the northeast. winter can't end soon enough for these areas that have been pounded by storm after storm. >> i'm getting tired of the snow, aren't you? >> reporter: dangers rise as the snow falls. a shortage of street salt in several states led to icy roads and scenes like this in

st. louis. >> pretty much just sliding pretty much down the hill. other than that i had no control over it. >> reporter: and fire hydrants looked more like snowmen. >> fire happens, you can't find a fire hydrant. you don't want anyone's house burning up because you can't find a fire hydrant. >> reporter: last night, volunteers joined firefighters in a suburb to dig them out of the storm. the snowfall in new york isn't expected to be heavy, 1 to 3 inches. then comes the worst, most longing to hear a warmup is on the way. temperatures in the midwest and northeast will start to climb into the 40s and 50s this week. welcome news for most but a concern for some. >> i see it's warming up drastically, all the know's going to melt, going in the rivers is going to cause a big problem. >> reporter: some in elgin, illinois, already have sandbags ready to go when the meting begins. anne-marie, we will begin a week-long thaw once this storm passes here in new york city, temperatures will be in the 40s

beginning tomorrow. >> that sounds like quite a relief, marlie hall, thank you very much. well, insurance executives are meeting in london today to discuss the catastrophic flooding that has hit large parts of southern england. the high water has run over entire neighborhoods. for months, england has been hit by rainstorm after rainstorm. last month was the rainiest year on record. severe flood warnings remain in place for parts of southern england today. and here in new york, at laguardia airport, a fuel truck hit a police car last night. two people were taken to the hospital in stable condition. there were major delays in arrivals and departures and hundreds of passengers were trapped on the tarmac. one passenger said he waited two hours to get to the gate. a united airlines flight was forced to make a emergency landing after hitting severe turbulence.

on flight 1676 from denver to billings, montana. the turbulence hit as the 737 approached billings. the plane landed in billings without incident after the pilot declared a medical emergency. three flight attendants and two passengers were injured when they were tossed around the cabin. >> there was a guy in front of me, actually who lifted up and hit the ceiling of the plane. and came down on the other side. on the lady across the aisle. >> one passenger reportedly hit the ceiling so hard it cracked. a baby was thrown from its parent's arms. but was not hurt. one flight attendant remains hospitalized. and the ethiopian government says it will try to extradite the co-pilot who hijacked the airliner and landed in switzerland. he said he felt threatened at home and was seeking asylum. passengers said they were terrified for hours as the plane bounced around in the sky. jeff pegues has our report. >> reporter: the rope dangling from the cockpit was the hijacker's escape route but the

31-year-old was in custody by the time the passengers one by one were escorted off the ethiopian airline jet with their hands up. for them it was the end of the hour and a half ordeal. the plane had taken off from addis ababa when the pilot left the cockpit to use the bathroom. the ethiopian co-pilot locked him out and hijacked the plane. he hit a distress signal over the sedan and began circling as he demanded asylum. not all passengers knew what was happening, but they say the plane seemed to be falling from the sky and they were put to put on their oxygen masks. once the plane landed police ordered passengers to put their hands on their heads. by then, the hijacker had climbed down the rope into the hands of investigators. >> the police went there and he went to the police and said he

was the hijacker. >> the co-pilot is charged with hijacking more likely to get jail time rather than asylum. he faces 20 years in jail. no one was hurt. jeff pegues, cbs news, washington. ten people are dead in south korea after the roof of an auditorium collapsed. more than 500 people were inside the prefabricated building at the time. many were trapped under the debris for several hours. about 100 people were injured. officials blamed the heavy snow. the bad weather hampered rescue efforts as well. and a new study suggests there were more unprovoked shark attacks in florida than anywhere else in the world. the university of florida international shark attack file reports 23 incidents last year. the only fatal attack in the u.s. was in hawaii. the report says most of the attacks in florida were in waters populated by surfers. coming up on the "morning news" now, close call, a massive asteroid hurdles by

late-night institution for more than half a century. >> of course, i wouldn't be here tonight for the previous hosts. thank you to steve allen, jack parr, johnny carson, jay leno, conan o'brien and jay leno. >> the "tonight show" is originating in new york for the first time in more than 40 years. on the "cbs moneywatch" oil prices soar. and nike laces up some "back to the future" kicks. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with both stories and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. a positive day for asian markets japan's nikkei jumped 3%. on word the bank of japan said it would continue to support economic growth. hong kong's hang seng went up a fraction. another busy day here on wall street today. the markets were closed yesterday for the presidents' day holiday. this week, investors will keep a close eye on several blue chip earning reports. last week, the dow rose 126 points. the nasdaq composite jumped 116. well, the cold weather has pushed demand for heating fuel higher.

and that means higher oil prices. benchmark u.s. crude was up 35 cents for march delivery, topping $100 a barrel. now, once the cold weather moderates, analysts expect the oil prices will drop. websites for the los vegas-based casino sands are back online. sands corporate websites were hacked on february 12th. hackers posted images presenting comments that the company's ceo sheldon adelson made. about using nuclear weapons on iran. the hacking is onsites for corporate sites as well as sites for overseas casinos and vegas hotels. the co-founder of the outdoor gear and sporting goods company cabela's has died. richard cabela died yesterday in home in sydney, nebraska. he started cabela's after 1961, selling fishing flies through the mail. that turned into a firm that billed $3.6 billion in revenue last year. richard cabela was 77 years old. and, anne-marie, it's

some delays in some olympic events here. and it's quite a difference from the sunny warm temperatures we saw in the early days of these olympic games. i can also tell you at the bolshoy ice dome it has been time for an american pair to shine. meryl davis and charlie white were nearly flawless in the free skate. the 2010 silver medalists finally struck gold. davis and white have been skating together for 17 years. their gold is a first for the united states in ice dancing. the united states women's hockey team have gold on their minds. on monday, team usa skated past sweden 6-1. now they will face their toughest test. they will come to meet team canada in thursday's gold medal games. and lolo jones, well she will try to win her first olympic medal after falling short in two summer games. here in sochi, she's competing in the women's bobsled and that's an event that's new to

her. meanwhile, steven holcomb piloted the united states to a bronze medal in bobsled. he will try to repeat his gold medal performance four years ago in the four-man bobsled. so after monday's event, team usa and russia are tied at the top of the medal count with 19 medals each. the netherlands is alone and second with 17. norway and canada are tied with 15 each. and finally american snowboarder lindsey jacobellis is not going home with a medal, but she's going home with something a lot moore special. she is one of the athletes here who has adopted one of the many stray dogs we've seen on the streets here in sochi. you might remember before the games there was a huge effort to try to euthanize the street dogs but now this athlete and some others have decided to adopt the pets. there's a huge effort to try to rescues the street dogs. anne-marie. >> i love it. thank you. well, if you've had enough

ready for triplets, instead, she got four bundles of joy, a set of identical quadruplet girls. >> they had got the three out and they said more feet. >> more feet? >> that's all i heard. i said, no. >> reporter: then the 42-year-old mississippi mom had to break the news to her husband. >> i told him to count the bands on my arm, and that's how i told him there was four instead of three. >> reporter: baby kayleigh was apparently hiding behind her sisters kenleigh, kristen and kelsey during numerous ultrasounds. >> it was an instant shock, but i'm proud of her. >> reporter: the odds of giving birth to identical quadruplets is quite rare, especially since the parents did not undergo in vitro fertilization. dr. jeffrey yu is an obstetrician in new york. >> in this case, when it happens from an embryo, the odds of that have to be 1 in 300 million. >> reporter: kim who already has

before chuck hagel became secretary of defense or senator from nebraska he was in the army and fought in vietnam. and as david martin tells us, after years of searching, he finally found one of his long lost war buddies. >> reporter: it was 1968, the worst year of the vietnam war and sergeant chuck hagel didn't know from one day to the next whether he would live or die. >> we lost something like 16,000 dead americans in that year, 1968. >> reporter: his life was in the hands of lieutenant jerome johnson, his platoon commander. >> steady, careful. never excitable. and in combat, that's who you want leading. >> reporter: now secretary of defense, hagel keeps a photo of one of their battles together on his office wall. >> as we were going in and just

everything -- everything blew. >> reporter: while the vietcong was trying to kill them, racial tensions especially after the assassination of martin luther king in april, were threatening to tear the unit apart. >> it was a terribly difficult racial year in the army in vietnam. where african-americans and whites were not getting along. >> reporter: johnson now retired and living in chicago told his men it had to stop. >> our fight was not with each other. our whole purpose being there together was to protect each other so that we all come home safely. >> he personalized it a little by saying something to the effect this is not just an order from your commanding officer. this is from me, jerome johnson, you will deal with me personally, too, on this. >> reporter: johnson grew close to hagel and to his brother tom who served together and were wounded under his command.
