5:00 am
. hello, this is "mosaic," i am tom burke. >> lent is a very important time in the christian world and specifically the catholic world. it is 40 days when we think of something we can do to bring us closer to our faith and to the lord -- and to the lord. >> and many people have come together to demonstrate for life. and it is called 40 days for life. we are very happy today to have with us. kathleen gillis and ron patagonski. and they know a whole lot about it. >> i want to let you know that wall street is at a stand still
5:01 am
right now. >> kathleen helping us and ron, you are on retirement. >> kathleen, where do we begin to tell a story like this. >> five or six years ago, ron and i started, we met one random day after our morning mass and ron said did you hear about the 40 days for life campaign that is coming outs and both of us had not heard and we were active in the walk for life campaign. or the walk for life we were doing here and we thought this would be a good opportunity to investigate. does it really save lives and change hearts to open for the possibility that this baby within a mother's woman could have a -- mother's womof the b, if we prayed for for them. >> mother's womb, and cities
5:02 am
around the world are ending abortion through prayers. we did it electronically and ron said. next lent, 2009. i am doing the 40 days. are you in or out. >> of course, we know the answer. >> why does it mean so much to you. >> it struck me, it was the perfect way to do lent and it is prayer and fasting. and jesus told us that some demons can't be driven out by prayer alone and requires fasting alone. >> this is a great opportunity for lent and that's how i got hooked into it and it is also, that the, they were showing a lot of the results of this, where there were hundreds of babies that were saved from abortion and that really caught my attention. >> it is prayerful and peaceful event. >> you have locations where you are. and in san mateo.
5:03 am
and it is not antagonistic. you tell us, kathleen. >> let's start here. >> correct. >> here is a place we can begin. >> it is sacrificing your time and the hard's part is with waking up and i am going to go somewhere where i am uncomfortable and try to make myself comfortable. it is walking which faith and good place is the first time i went. and there is another one named hunt hanover and i think we met ron. and he said he would have two people at the site at all times and i came upon the site. and there was ron. and hunt, two gregarious guys just smiling. going, hey, we made it. and we made the hardest part and that is getting together to pray. and what we saw and experienced, my first half hour. that i was going to go for a half hour. probably turned into two or three hours. >> the friends we made out of this. my husband and i hope to go to
5:04 am
a wedding in bali of a gal i met in the 2009 in the first prayer group. so, there are so many fruits. what is that word, you say ron, the graces. >> and there are many graces. and i think that, well, the one thing i get sad about is that i would like to have so many more people come just to be. to participate in this. and it is such, it is filled with graces of all kind. and the people that you run into there. and it is just, it is great. >> i want to let people know there is a website at www 40 days for life.com. and we will ask you. we have to take a break in a moment. but you have gotten so organized. how was it in the beginning. was it scraps of papers and phone calls and now it is t-shirts. >> correct. we are not using the cellphone as much and most of the people
5:05 am
that came out with us in the beginning were retired. we had to work around just suing the internet. and it is great to send out e-mails and if they are not using their e-mail it didn't work. we are more organized. we are # 75 people that are receiving the daily e-mail and it is day 15. we have had 50 people come out and pray with us. >> many of them have come multiple times. some people come at a certain time every day. >> people have gone and buying groceries and with their supplement ales right there. >> couple of people saying, i am going to the doctor's office and i will be back and pray with you. >> we will ask that question when we come back on "mosaic," stay with us.
5:06 am
5:07 am
. can you say that on television. we are back on "mosaic" and we are happy today to be talking about 40 days for life with kathleen gillis and ron. >> you say it is 40 days. and you are pro-life. one in san francisco and one in san mateo and you are out every day it is eight to eight down in the peninsula. >> and you are eight also. >> yes. >> we are talking about this. and this is not a pulpit and it can be a pros tellizing time and we can have people rethink abortion. but you, kathleen come from a different perspective. >> university of tennessee, i clearly remember george bush
5:08 am
senior coming and giving a speech. it was a debate. >> pro-life and pro-choice. this is in the 90s and i was on the side of the pro-choicers and get your rose sear off my ovaries. >> so you just don't know how convincing or in changing a person's heart. >> that is one of the best or easiest selling points. >> there is so many of us. that, you know, have had a change of heart or maybe change of the heart to investigate further. >> what is going on. when we hear 55 million babies have died since rowe versus wade. they say am i part of this. and complacency and not hearing the words. mortal sip and it has put people a few years ago.
5:09 am
would say. my daughter is having a baby. >> figure out how it works and it is different now and when a grandmother to be who thinks she is too young hears that her daughter is having a baby. >> she sees. there are people standing in the wingsides. pregnancy centers. adoption agencies and foster care. >> a lot of good people and that's who we hope to be representing as we stand on the sidewalk of these abortuaries, there are other ways and information. >> i just thought of it. >> we found out one of the centers is charging 35 the. and most of the people in the neighborhood. >> it is a lower income area and they are struggling to make the rent payment. so. >> when they heard it was $35.
5:10 am
two counselors repush punished our pox. to give out free pregnancy tests. >> we feel, we hear there is a need. yesterday we had over 10 packs come and not ready to pray there yet. but want to participate. >> ron, i mean, the whole story is really the real story. >> not just the one note that some people like to put you in sometimes. >> no, it is definitely. >> actually. we have so many experiences. it is hard to figure out which one i should tell you about. >> just last night. we had a young lady come who prayed with us. over on 80 street. and she had a brand new baby with her. >> it was marvelous and quite little thing. >> latino lady. and she, she showed me and had
5:11 am
on her cellphone. all the pictures of her baby on ultrasound. and it was gorgeous. >> i can't get over it. and you would see her baby at five weeks. and 10 weeks. and and it was really something else. >> i was hoping we could have that show there all the time. >> i want to ask you, too. >> how does a message like this. >> pro-life message ring through the world. >> you have a big job. >> you talk with people. ron, you are a retired dentist. >> certainly. >> so, what is. and how does the message ring. >> do you have all kind of people from levels of education who stay away from it. >> it is a great question. and the people who get most angry are the ones that come out and join us.
5:12 am
especially the women and what i am founding out in the court world. so many put off having children. they thought they could control when the blessing is going to thank you. >> it as interesting dichotomy of people that show up and lots of people in their 40s the didn't have children and so focused on making an income. or running the corporate, and breaking the grass ceiling. didn't trust enough in the possibility of hey, you know, pregnancy is possibly something to budget in. you made me think of other things that are pro found. people are most scared and coming out and praying with us. have fascinating stories, it is really a time of healing and that is pretty pro found and during the day of the prayer warriors. >> it is the baby boomers. retired people. >> slow down now. >> i am getting there. >> but, it is. >> so, it is profound.
5:13 am
afwork, the people you will see after 5:00. and little bit cautious or i will get an e-mail in the morning. i didn't sign up yet and i are drove by. and i prayed a little prayer for your cause. >> it is not our cause. >> it is for the children. >> that is a budget deal. we will talk about it. we will sneak away ron. >> you know, us guys. >> we are coming back on "mosaic," 40 days for life.
5:14 am
5:15 am
5:16 am
. welcome back to "mosaic." this is the 40 days before easter and especially large in the christian world and very large in the catholic world. >> kathleen and ron, we are looking at help save lives. it is a sheet that promotes 40 days for life. how did you come up with that? and what does it say? >> thankfully, the national campaign, the 40 days for life out of texas and now virginia. they have pooled all money together and we have some continuity to the program and they can divide it up to the different cities. we have san mateo and san francisco and then they had oakland and marin county. and we are seeing it spread. one of the things you mentioned before, is how are we seeing this been bigger and it has improved and we have had more people on the sidewalk. >> good statistic i heard is that we had buses for the 12 walk for life and this year.
5:17 am
there was 200 for the 2,000 walk for life. >> there was a five to 15,000 people increase. we are, joyfully, we are receiving those people. we have a young african-american woman, who said she was fed up. she is not a religious person. >> i am just fed up with all the planned parenthood signs. they are going against my people and you hear more about this and what is the other word, planned pregnancy than welcoming your child into the world. so, she had heard and saw that they were specifically targeting the walk for life and she came out and nearly fell over when we were at our 40 days booth. > en i said i live in san francisco. and ron said so did i. >> she was guying in the propaganda they were all shipped in. she is now out there with us praying. and she is not a religious
5:18 am
person. she said i am a scientific person. i know what is in my belly is a baby. if i am having sex. >> let's continue there and tell some of those stories, who are these people, ron. >> the other thing i want to add is that you know, in our culture today, it seems like when a woman gets pregnant, there a sense that it is a curse instead of a blessing. and our witness there is party of our purpose is to educate people and understand that this truly is a gift from god and we should respect that. and have these babies come into our society. and not kill them. >> when you bring that up, i am thinking, you and some people who go by and made the approach hand feel differently. might come looking for a fight. >> you are not looking for a fight. >> we get a lot of challenges for sure.
5:19 am
>> but my response. pt i try to listen. and say, thank you. >> and god bless you. and just ignore the negative part of it. and we are not there to be in an argument or debate or anything like that. and there to spread the good news. and life is something to be cherished. and not to be. killed. >> we are talking about 40 days for life. it is www. 40 days for life. and find out where the locations are and sign up and learn more. maybe just want to talk or e-mail you or even ask you questions that might not, that might be from a different perspective. they can do that. >> we will find out more about the people. you mentioned a couple of stories, you wanted to tell. >> we tried to use these inspect proportion to this. and it works a lot and often, you know, praying anything our father to help change account heart of the person hop might be just walking by and having a

negative attitude and your smile. it is like the best way. and best formula. which remind me. a colleague of mine. i asked for help with the lovely help save lives and if he could put it on a color copy for me and he did. he left one on the copy machine and was confronted. why are you getting involved in something so political. his response was i am adopted. >> he came out to our kickoff event and his testimony left the 50 of us that were there just mesmerized, he was an air guitarist and a man with a freight disposition. people want to tell their stories and that is really a very cool part of the people hop were adopted. >> 30 seconds, go. >> last year, we had one of the policemen that came by and he shared with us, he was adopted and very supportive of what we are doing this.
5:21 am
and very heartwarming to hear that. >> we will take a break. we are coming back with kathleen gillis and ron. and ho days for life. >> -- 40 days for life.

. today we are here with kathleen gillis and ron konopaski. this is 40 days for life. and i will let kathleen go. >> we want to challenge the moms and dads to come out with the teenagers. >> it is when you have a mother whose daughter is at one of the school insist the neighborhood, coming over and saying, hey, instead of going to get the starbucks, we will swing by and pray at the site.
5:24 am
if we could get more to do thatful a follow up with an e-mail and we want to sign up for the individual calendar. we have the teens and young men requesting. >> mom, you want to go back there. it is the need. we know all people and it is one to get through your anxiety and get on board. we have a lot. >> i want to say. to add to that. invite the parents with young children also. we have one young parent to come and pray with us at the site here and she came. >> the first day she came with her four children. >> like stepped up all the way and it was beautiful to see that. and it is very powerful there on the sidewalk and to see the young children there as well. >> i would like to invite the people to come with their children. >> contact lean, how is your family adapting to all of this. >> as long as they don't let it control my life. >> a happy wife is a happy

had seven people deep which is just such a great testimony and you did see mothers. putting -- pushing their strollers and giving us the number's up. we know it is hard. and it is also, we know the gift and it has been a fun believe it or not. in a controversial city. >> there is so many good people here and i would have to say most about that. >> how will you wear it. >> making trades on the iphone. >> i have an excellent assistant. >> there is a reason. >> ron, you are retired. >> fortunately. i am able to do this. >> i have a tooth i want you to look at. but we want you to do this. give you enough and we have a little bit of time left. kathleen. you want to do this. >> make a moment this lent, come on out. 1550 value lens see ya street between army and mission. it can change the heart of
