are caught on camera as they destroy dozens of cars. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, march 14th, 2014. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm marlie hall in for anne-marie green. there is a growing sense this morning that whatever happened to the missing malaysia airlines jet it was a deliberating at. nearly a week into the search, there's still no sign of the plane, but u.s. officials say they don't believe flight 370 crashed immediately after it disappeared from radar last saturday. there are strong indications it flew for hours. so the search area is officials are declining

to say. right now they're declining to give the path that they show. a florida-bound flight turned terrifying thursday when the pilot aborted the takeoff. the jet was about to lift off when the tire blew and the nose gear collapsed. there were no injuries though two passengers requested medical

attention as todd quinones reports -- >> reporter: video captured the chaotic moments as passengers used the inflatable chutes to get off the flight. the 41 passengers and flight on board were bound for ft. lauderdale, florida, when the tire of the front landing blew and the pilots aboarding the takeoff. tonight we talked to several a personals who were on board the plane. >> the second we went up it came crashing down and everyone started screaming. >> bumping and we noticed we were going back down and then stopped and, you know, smelled the smoke and then they said evacuate the plane and everyone started panicking. >> we were taxiing and the guy said to me i can see a plane crashing. of course, you think the guy's making it up and you look out the window and see sparks and

flames. not flames. let's correct that. sparks and a thick cloud of dust. >> emergency personnel were alerted something went wrong. >> something's going on at the runway here. >> ressa silverman's 23-year-old daughter rachel was also on board. she came to the airport after her daughter called her and frantically told her mom what happened. >> she said she smelled a lot of gas and she was very nervous and she was afraid that the plane was going to explode and they said finally, you can evacuate and she said she went down the chute and ran. >> that was kyw's todd kquinone reporting. at least five people are still missing in harlem following wednesday's explosion and double building collapse. crews continued to search the rubble for more victims this

people on the crowded street, killing two and injuring 23 others. three people are in critical condition. secretary of state john kerry is warning russia it will face very serious sanctions if it annexes part of ukraine. kerry meets with russia's foreign minister today in london in a bid to defuse the crimea crisis. the u.s. says that vote violates ukraine's constitution. russia moved thousands of troops to an area near the ukraine boarder. they're taking part in military exercises, testing artillery and russian launchers. newly released video show as what viktor yanukovych took when he fled ukraine in february. security cameras at his la vision mansion appear to show yanukovych himself moving items over three days and he has lots

now. he's running into heavy traffic here. >> the driver of a pickup truck led police on a chase up to 120 miles an hour in oklahoma city thursday. he at one point the police tried but failed to bump the truck to a stop. the chase came to a dramatic end several minutes later. >> oh, oh, oh. oh, we just had a horrible accident here. >> at least three people were injured in the crash. reports gm knew

about the defect back as far as 2001 but continued to build the vehicles anyway. >> let me start by asking you about the gm recall. >> reporter: on capitol hill thursday the recall was the first order of business in the senate. secretary of transportation anthony fox was asked why the national highway traffic safety administration or nhtsa investigated problems with some of the gm cars in question three times but never demanded a fix. >> in this case, the three crash investigations that were done were inconclusive. now, as we learn more information, we may learn that our process for reviewing

situations such as this need to be improved. >> reporter: in an updated letter filed with regulators, gm now says they knew about an issue with ignition switches in 2001 in saturn ion, yet a comparable ignition was put on cobalts starting in 2004. a service bulletin was issued to dealers in 2005 saying a heavy key ring or jarring can turn the engine off which disables the airbags. nhtsa had access to that but no recalls were ordered. clarence ditlow. >> there's been a recall. absolutely have to fix that. >> reporter: the center for auto safety sent a letter to nhtsa and enclosed this chart. it shows the number of deaths when airbags did not deploy in chevy ions and cobalts.

as many as 27 in 2010. ditlow says based on this chart, the only way nhtsa would not have seen this trend is if it closed its eyes. >> reporter: gm is linked to 12 fatalities. this chevy cobalt killed a 17-year-old girl and her grandmother. a 1-year-old boy was paralyzed from the waist down. we did get a response from nhtsa about that letter. quote, the data available to nhtsa at that time did not contain sufficient evidence of a possible safety defect trend, they said. new information provided by gm has promised nhtsa to launch a progressive investigation. jeff glor, cbs news, new york. straight ahead on "moneywatch," a price is coming ♪ [ female announcer ] now your best accessory can be your smile.

in november 2012 bp pled guilty to charges surrounding the deadly oil spill. part of the deal calls for an independent monitor to monitor bp for the next five years. amazon is raising the price of prime. starting next month, the free shipping and video streaming service will jump 20 bucks to $99 a year. it's the first price increase since amazon rolled out the service nine years ago. and spending on pets is at an all-time high. an industry trade group estimates americans will spend about $59 billion this kwayear their pets. that includes $20 billion on food and an estimated $650 million on pet insurance. other expenses are for groomers, training, boarding, and pet sitters. in hope

a us airways crew is being hailed for its response to an emergency. a blown tire forced the pilot to abort a takeoff in philadelphia thursday. passengers evacuated the triple jet on emergency slides. there were no serious injuries. and officials say the missing malaysia airlines plane continued to ping satellites for hours after it disappeared from radar. sources say two systems used to track the aircraft shut down sequentially, raising the prospect of a malicious act. millions of people are searching for malaysia flight 370, many from the comfort of their own home or office.

carter evans explains how the hunt for the missing passenger jet has gone viral. >> basically we're looking for anything that stands out. >> reporter: l.a. filmmaker craig santee has spend 12 hours scanning satellite images on the website. in your search so far what have you found? >> so far i've found 12 fishing vessels, and i've found about 11 things that i cannot explain what they are, but they don't look natural. >> reporter: the images come from five satellites owned by colorado-based digital globe. they're covering the same areas being searching by boats and plays. shay harnoy is the contributor. >> we have people from all time zones, all languages all trying to solve this mystery. >> reporter: so far they've searched 1.2 millions of images. >> we're putting them together using our statistical algorithm. it's a computer program that's able to identify who's reliable, who's not relyleable and what's

really going on with the image. >> reporter: last year the website was used after the typhoon in haiyan in the philippines. it helped direct relief teams. the hunt for malaysia air 307 has gained recognition on facebook and twitter. >> i haven't seen a friend post selfies. they're posting on this. >> reporter: that interest has gotten many to try to help. >> reporter: do you feel like you're making a difference in your search effort? >> i do. not only because of me but everyone exponentially working together. >> so many people are launching on the website has crashed many times, and those volunteers will soon have a new set of data to analyze. digital globe tells us it has redirected its satellite to get a better view of the indian ocean. carter evans, cbs news, los angeles. coming up after your local news on "cbs this morning." the latest developments on the mysterious disappearance of malaysia airlines flight 370.
