captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, march 17th, 2014. good morning. thanks for joining us this st. patrick's day. i'm marlie hall in for anne-marie green. we begin with the riddle of malaysia airline flight 370. now more than a week after the boeing 777 and the 239 people onboard vanished without a trace, there is growing evidence the jet was deliberately diverted. investigators say one of the plane's signaling systems was shut down before the last contact. the final communication from the crew, "all right, good night," did not mention any trouble, and it's unclear who was speaking. the focus of the investigation has shifted to the pilot and first officer. seth doane reports from kuala lumpur. >> reporter: when police searched captain zaharie shah's

home, they found a flight simulator. the 53-year-old pilot was seen sitting in front of a simulate never a video he posted online. authorities said the simulator was confiscated and rebuilt at the police station. >> officers from the royal military police visited the home of the pilot. they spoke to family members of the pilot and expressed examining the pilot's flight simulator. >> reporter: zaharie who had been flying with malaysia airlines since 1981 was an aviation enthusiast. we tried to enter a gated community where the captain lived but found beefed up security. police also searched the co-pilot's house saturday. this is the co-pilot fariq hamid's house. he lived here with his family. we rang the doorbell but no one answered. neighbors tell us that they have seen police cars and motorcycles here. they also tell us this was a relatively quiet family that

kept to themselves. his next-door neighbor would not give her name said she'd only exchanged quick hellos with the 27 years old. >> i know he's a pilot and i know he's related to the new, but when i saw cameras in front of this house, then i saw his phase, yeah, i know this guy. >> reporter: the focus on these pilots have sharpened followed by timelines laid out by authorities at press briefings. officials say flight 370's communication systems were partially disabled before the final words heard from the cockpit, which did not signal any trouble to air traffic controllers. growing frustration was clear on tl sunday talk shows. >> the pilot and co-pilot should have been the focus from the start. that would have been ordinary law enforcement and investigate torrey procedures. the fb i could have been called in to help that, interpol

intelligence agentsagencies. my understanding is malaysia was reluctant to cooperate. >> reporter: one other major development over the weekend. we now know the plane sent its last signal to a satellite 7 1/2 hours after it took off, a search that once included 14 countries now will include 25. seth doane, cbs news, kuala lumpur. in this country another winter storm to report. spring officially starts thursday, but this morning more snow and ice is falling on the mid-atlantic states. by this afternoon, heavy snow is expected from the central appalachians to the jersey shore. it's already snowing in virginia where some areas could see up to 10 inches. meteorologist chelsea ingram of our baltimore station wjz is following the storm.

>> we're seeing another round of winter for places like the mid-atlantic where winter just won't quit. snowfall plus mixed precipitation. we've also got a severe side to this storm system, and that includes places like florida that could see severe thunderstorms as we head into your monday afternoon and evening. but back to the winter side for the mid-atlantic. d.c. and baltimore, you guys even into the morning commute are going to be dealing with moderate to heavy snowfall. it's not until about the lunchtime hour where things begin to taper off quite a bit. we'll be tapering off from the northwest to southeast as we head into monday afternoon. by the evening time, things are really going to start to dry out, but not without leaving behind quite a bit of snowfall accumulation. check this out. through monday afternoon and evening, we're looking at about 3 to 6 inches for the areas in white. yes, that does include the d.c. metro as well as the baltimore metro. 6 to 12 for areas in the blue. outside of that we're looking at 1 to 3 inches. i'm meteorologist chelsea ingram for cbs news. >> the citizens of crimea have

overwhelmingly voted to rejoin russia. the west is pushing back against yesterday's vote. today the crimean parliament is expected to formally ask moscow to be annexed. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> marlie, good morning. the final tally came in at 97% of crimeans voting in fash of joining russia. washington's position is that this vote took place under duress from russia's military. president obama told president putin if moscow tries to annex crimea, there will be sanctions, but the focus really seems to have shifted now to keeping moscow from moving further into ukraine. pro-russian crimeans rallied in lennon square and simferopol in landside victory to reunite with moscow. this resident says i think a great future is ahead with russia. another said it's a time of joy.

we are coming home. more than 80% of crimeans turns out to show their support. in a telephone conversation with russian president vladimir putin, president obama said the u.s. will never recognize the vote and urged him to help resolve the crisis in crimea diplomatically. u.s. and european leaders now plan to move forward quickly to pressure moscow. that could inviewed travel bans and economic sanctions. >> i believe everybody will suffer if we've got to do sanctions, but the only ones that can prevent this are the russians. >> reporter: and the vote is already having a ripple effect. people of the city of donetsk stormed them to join russia as well. many residents of crimea who did

[ male announcer ] toyota. let's go places. a sheriff's deputy was lowered 100 feet from a helicopter line to rescue a stranded dog. it happened on saturday 70 miles north of san francisco. the labrador named oreo somehow made its way halfway down a 90-foot cliff and couldn't get back up. the deputy fitted a rope around the dog. the helicopter then lifted oreo

to the top of the cliff where it was reunited with its owner. standoff between chicago police and a murder suspect ended after almost nine hours. as dana kozlov of our chicago station wbbm reports it began with a car chase on sunday that forced one of the city's most heavily traveled roads to be shut down. >> northbound, we have an officer down there, officer down. has been shot. proceed with caution. >> reporter: sunday afternoon chaos on the police scanner minutes after the car police were chasing crashed just off lakeshore drive. >> the guy is heavily armed, heavily armed. proceed can with caution. >> reporter: inside the car joseph andrew felton jr. wanted for allegedly killing his wife in georgia. bless there say they knew he was driving a car with illinois plates. around noon here in the suburbs, the police apparently tried to arrest him.

he sped off and the chase began. one of his four sisters arrived on the scene and tried talking with him. >> he's not making sense. he can't talk in complete sentences. he's just yelling and screaming. >> reporter: officers also had a tough time talking with him. at one point you could hear officers on a loud speaker telling felton to pick up a phone they'd toss to him. >> they're trying to wait him out so he'll be tired and can get in the right frame of mind to surrender. if that doesn't work, another option is to put him in touch with another sister of mine who can talk to him. >> reporter: he and his wife moved from georgia park seven months ago. this, they say, it's a total shock. >> considering what's happened, i don't know his frame of mind. i'm sure if he saw us, he would come out safely. >> that was wbbm's dana kozlov reporting. three people were injured during the chase, including a police officer, none seriously.

on the "cbs moneywatch," honda announces a major recall, and the top dog at the box office. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> morning, marlie. overnight the asian markets were cautious ahead of the western response to the vote in crimea. tokyo's nikkei lost a quarter percent. hong kong's hang seng' dropped more than a quarter percent. on wall street traders are expected to continue to be on edge this morning. the dow is down 387 points last week or almost 2.5%. the nasdaq lost 90 points or about 1%. alibaba, the chinese-based internet giant, plans go public on a u.s. stock exchange. the e-commerce company could raise up to $15 billion making it the biggest initial public offering since facebook. alibaba wants to being a more global company. the company didn't say when its ipo would be offered. honda is recalling almost 900,000 odyssey minivans because of a problem that could lead to a fire.

the recall is for model years 2005 through 2010. honda says the fuel pump cover could crack, causing a fuel leak and possibly a fire. no fires or injuries have been reported. >> and "mr. peabody & sherman" was number one at the weekend box office. the animated movie about a genius dog and his adopted human son earned more than $21 million in ticket sales. it's based on a popular cartoon from the 1950s and '60s. general jeffrey sinclair is believed to be the highest ranking u.s. military officer ever to face court-martial on sexual assault charges, but on sunday the army did an about-face, and today sinclair is expected to plead guilty to lesser charges. don dahler reports. >> reporter: as deputy commander of the 82nd airborne, general jeffrey sinclair was one of the army's rising stars, but after pleading guilty to numerous incidences of conduct unbecoming an officer, his future is not nearly as bright. sinclair was accused of forcing his mistress to perform oral sex, threatening to kill her family, and performing sex acts with her in public areas. sources tell cbs news in return for dropping those charges the general will plead guilty to lesser charges of maltreatment

still searching for the plane, and although the pilots have not been charged with a crime, they are being closery scrutinized. both are among thousands of pilots across the globe passengers rely on. to get the job airline pilots here in the u.s. face a rigorous screening process. mark rosenker is the former chairman of the national transportation safety board. >> first they have to be credentialed. you have to have the appropriate amount of certifications, and that's checked by the company with the faa. >> reporter: pilots are also subject to a battery of medical and psychological tests and criminal background tests, but the screening tests vary widely country to country. how do you reassure passengers that, you know, these people who are flying these planes are trustworthy? >> we can look for people that, in fact, appear to be as normal as we like to believe you and i are, however, circumstances change in their life. pressures come about because we're dealing with human behavior. >> reporter: a month ago an

ethiopian airlines co-pilot hijacked a plane in a bid for seeking ylum in switzerland. years ago a plane crashed into the atlantic ocean killing all 217 people on board. the ntsb stopped short of calling it a suicide but concluded the pilots caused the crash. the airlines disappearance is still a mystery. still air travel remains the safest mode of transportation. jeff pegues, cbs news, washington. comedian david brener died here in new york over the weekend. >> jay walker, we know you're in there. throw out your shoes and come out with your feet up. >> reporter: brenner was a frequent guest on "the tonight show" with johnny carson. he also filled in for carson as host. brenner said he was ready to quit comedy until he landed his first appearance on "the tonight show" in 1971. david brenner was 78 years old.
