questions about security at the new york city landmark. this is the "cbs morning news" new york city landmark. this is the "cbs morning news" for tuesday, march 25th, 2014. captioning funded by cbs good morning, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. >> well, this morning, officials in northern washington say the situation following a massive mudslide is grim, and they don't expect to find any more survivors. at least 14 people were killed when an entire rain-soaked hillside collapsed on to the small town of oso saturday morning. dozens are still missing, rescue crews face dangerous conditions and more rain is forecast for today. bigad shaban has our report. >> reporter: search teams in washington state are using canoes and hovercraft to look for signs of life in thick mud, 40 feet deep in some places. officials are trying to determine how many people are missing during a deadly mudslide.

they're working off a list of 176 people that could include duplicates. >> they're not individuals that are deceased. they're not individuals that are injured. they are not individuals that are missing. they are 176 reports. >> reporter: on monday, members of one crew on the western edge were forced to retreat fearing other mudslides. others are on standby to help find friends. >> parents, grandparents and the whole family. you do have a search amount of attachment. >> reporter: president obama has declared federal emergency in the state using federal aid for communities. authorities believe the heavy rainfall made it unstable. and causing in rural areas of seattle. hope for additional survivors appears to be fading. >> until that point that we feel we need to just stop, we're

going to keep going. >> reporter: for now, the search is still in the rescue phase, bigad shaban, cbs news, arlington. the search for the missing malaysian airline has been suspended today because of rough water. but searchers say it leaves little doubt that it crashed in the indian ocean. a british satellite company picked up pings from flight 370 after its transponder stopped transmitting. the pings helped establish the two possible routes north and south. engineers refined the data focusing on the southern corridor. the malaysian prime minister reported the findings yesterday. >> calling this new data flight 370 ended in the southern indian ocean. >> this morning, many angry family members demanding more information clashed with police outside the malaysian embassy in beijing. seth doane has more on the

distraught family members. >> reporter: relatives were overcome with emotion, hearing that no one on board had survived. beijing's lido hotel where family members have waited for 17 days, some were carried out on stretchers. this woman pleaded to the gods to watch over her son. up in this room, we met xu dengweng whose wife was a passenger on flight 370. i learned the news from television, i couldn't handle it, i fainted, he told us. how can you announce this news to the world without providing evidence. in sunday, here in kuala lumpur, we met jackie gonzalez, the wife of crew member patrick gomes.

even then, she kept sending text messages to him. do you let yourself think about what might have happened? >> i try not to. i try not to. i guess at some point in time, you know, we have to face reality, but not at this moment. >> reporter: her hope ended. we went back to gonzalez's home to try to talk to her. a family member met us at the gate. what's her reaction, emotional? >> crying. >> the whole family. >> reporter: the whole family is crying? from the street, we could hear sobbing inside, as 17 days of grief came pouring out. some relatives were told by telephone. others were informed by text message. several family members we've spoken with tell us they're planning to travel to australia even though no wreckage has been found. seth doane, cbs news, kuala lumpur, malaysia.

well, in this country, the supreme court will hear argued to a religious base challenge to president obama's health care law. a group of companies require to cover contraceptives. the largest company hobby lobby stores says it's against their religious beliefs to suffer such contraceptives. the white house will reportedly change major changes to the nsa's way of retrieving and storing america's phone data. susan mcginnis. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. this is a huge overhaul for the program but the program was first reported by "the new york times" and it's edward snowden who first disclosed the government's massive program. it could end with what the government currently does, sweeping up phone records of millions of americans and holding on to them for five years.

phone companies would still hold on to phone records but no longer than 18 months. the government could obtain specific records but it would need a court order. that would include any new calls made to and from a suspect's home. the fisa court, the foreign intelligence surveillance court, would have to approve each number as having suspected terrorist ties. it was last january that the president set a deadline for this coming friday to come up with a new program. the current program would be extended for 90 days. the president's plan still needs to be approved by congress. that could prove to be problematic. anne-marie. >> susan mcginnis in washington. this morning, russia said it was interested in continuing contact with the g-8 nations. that follows after the leaders of g-7 nations to punish russia for crimea. g-7 leaders will not hold a

a report and cameraman for cbs station kovr caught the crash on tape and then moments later, a pickup plows into the back of a car sending it skidding. it's not known how many were jurisdiction or the extent of injuries. an operator at the controls during a chicago train derailment might have dozed off. the commuter train did not stop is when it reached it monday. it jumped the tracks, skids across the platform and scaled an escalator. morning 30 people were hurt. a transit union official says the operator had worked a lot of overtime and was extremely tired. a texas water corridor vital to oil production remains closed this morning. the coast guard says it's working to reopen the houston ship channel following saturday's oil spill. crews are cleaning thousands of gallons of oil. more than 90 vessels are backed up. refiners have cut production because they can't get the oil out. and new study shows the connection between violent video games and aggressive behavior. researchers followed more than

on the "cbs moneywatch" madoff employees face justice and the makers of candy crush go public. jill wagner's at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the continued instability in ukraine sent stocks in asia lower. tokyo's nikkei quart 0.25%, hong kong's hang seng fell 0.5%. in this country a selloff in tech stocks dragged down the broader market. the dow fell 26 points the nasdaq lost 50. five former employees of imprisoned financier bernie madoff were convicted of helping madoff trick investors out of billions of dollars. one juror said the evidence against madoff was overwhelming. each was convicted of conspiracy to defraud clients, securities

fraud and falsifying records and face prison sentences up to 220 years. the ponzi keep planned madoff in prison for 150 years. disney is buying youtube operator maker studios for $500 billion. maker has subscribers and generates billions of views every month. one of the largest audiences on youtube. disney will also find talent for its tv shows and youtube. and the company that make the the popular app-based game candy crash saga makes its initial public officer -- offering tomorrow. candy crush was the most downloaded app on apple's app store. it produces three-quarters of the revenue for london-based king digital entertainment. something investors look closely at. anne-marie. >> i'm embarrassed to say, i waste a lot of time playing candy crush. i should invest to at least get the money back if i can't get

the time back. jill wagner, thanks a lot. washington redskins owner dan snyder is launching a new foundation aimed at helping american-indian tribes. snyder announced the initiative in a letter to redskins fans. and he writes, quote, our efforts will address the urgent challenges plaguing the indian country based on what tribal leaders tell us they need most." snyder said he and his staff visited 26 reservations to hear from tribal leaders about the problems in their communities. he has faced pressure to change the team's name which some say is is offensive to native-americans. the letter gave no indication that the team will change the name, though. and tiger woods is in danger of missing the masters for the first time in his career. in a news conference monday, woods said it's still too soon for him to say if he'll be able to play in next month's tournament. he's been troubled by a back injury for much of last month. woods has won at augusta four times. and when we return, a stunt caught on tape. new video of parachutists who

have been accused of burglary and other offenses for breaking into the new york city skyscraper and jumping. tracee carrasco reports. >> reporter: you're looking at video just released of a death-defying stunt, a jump in the middle of the night september 30th, off the top of the world trade center. watch as one of the jumpers plummets from 100 stories up with a camera mounted on his head. it took only one minute for the parachuting daredevils to land on the west side highway. andrew rossig and james bread seen here along with kyle hartwell and marco markovic surrendered to police on charges of burglary, reckless endangerment and jumping from a building. their lawyers say these two stunts exposed an even bigger issue, a lack of security. >> when these guys went into the world trade center site, they went through a hole in the fence and walked right up the

building. they encountered no resistance whatsoever from any personnel. >> reporter: just last week, a new jersey teenager crawled through a hole in the fence, climbed to the top and took photos for an hour. police commission are bill bratton is hardly thankful for revealing any holes in security. >> these individuals have compromised it. >> reporter: attorneys for the four men say no one was ever in any danger. but they were surprised how easy it was to gain access. >> that's one of the first things my client said to me was that how surprised he was at how there was no security whatsoever. how easy it was to just walk right up there and something that, you know, the mayor has just recently described as the number one terrorist target in the world so -- >> did they encounter any security whatsoever? >> none at all. >> that's tracee carrasco of our new york station wcbs reporting. now, the men are due back in

oh, a sticky mess stopped traffic in los angeles monday. a big rig overturned spilling 42,000 pounds of honey on the highway. hazardous material workers joined the cleanup which also involved diesel fuel. several lanes were closed during rush hour. and traffic backed up for miles. the nfl foundation announced it's giving a $45 million grant to support youth football. and the program is designed to protect kids from concussions. as jeff glor reports some unlikely players are getting in on the action. >> reporter: leina douka is a 34-year-old mother learning how to play football at a camp in georgia. she has no intention of ever entering a game. she's doing it for her children. >> honestly, i was one of those moms that thought it will never happen to my kids.

>> reporter: two years ago, douka's old evidence son suffered a concussion. he was carted off the field and later stopped playing entirely. the younger son did not. >> i'm never worried but now i'm worried. >> reporter: football accounts for 30% of concussions in boys between the ages of 15 and 19. far and away the leading source. that's why the nfl is running this camp. the thinking is if moms know what right, they can make sure their kids do, too. nfl commissioner roger goodell. >> when you look at some of these moms running these practice drills, with all due respect to moms everywhere -- >> you know what, they appreciate just being able to be on the field and to understand the drills and participate in it and understand it better. >> you've been to some of the camps, you see some of the questions you get from mothers saying should my kid play football? what do you say? >> well, that's a personal

decision, but we want them to have the right information when they make those decisions. when moms understand it better and say, yes, we want our kids to participate because we like what's happening. we like the fact that we're brought into the circle so we can understand better the game and understand what you're doing to make sure when i leave my kid with you as a coach, you're making sure that he's being taken care of. >> reporter: one major focus of the nfl's heads-up program teaching kids not to copy some professional players who have been fined for illegal helmet-to-helmet hits. >> this is a broader returning to fundamentals of football. we're getting back to that. the helmet is designed for protection. it's not a weapon. >> before, it's mom, you don't know, you don't know what you're talking about. now i feel like i can say, i went to a camp, i do know what i'm talking about. and that's what you should be doing. >> reporter: the nfl said the plan is to bring heads up to 10,000 youth leagues nationwide. jeff glor, cbs news, new york. >> moms looking pretty tough there.
