this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, april 4th, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. another round of severe weather is rolling through the country's midsection this morning. damaging wind, thunderstorms, hail, as well as tornados are likely from southeast missouri to the ohio valley. up to 4 inches of rain is possible in some areas. early yesterday morning a tornado touched down in missouri just west of st. louis. at least 100 homes were damaged by winds of up to 110 miles an hour. there was heavy rain and flooding, but there was no reports of any injuries. in denton, texas, north of ft. worth, a storm produced a river of hail and water that flooded streets. the hail damaged car windows, but no injuries were reported. andrea lucia of our dallas station kttv has more from texas.

>> reporter: tornado sirens sounded and a funnel cloud formed on the horizon. >> i don't know what to do. i've never been in a storm like this. i'm not from here. >> reporter: people ran for cover, ducking inside this denton walmart. moments later the storm struck, littering the ground with hailstorms. >> it was a little terrifying. i'm not going to lie to anybody. >> reporter: he took shelter in an auto shop. >> the hail came in and it was circling in the building. i've never seen anything like it before. >> reporter: at the walmart, customers say they were ushered to the back of the store. >> the hail was this big around. >> reporter: the ice punched through skylights overhead. >> there was hail coming in through the top of the store. i mean it was falling everywhere. >> reporter: as the drivers moved east drivers pulled over and caught a menacing show. >> there looked to be a massive

cloud. it was getting bigger and bigger. >> did it catch you by surprise? >> yeah. >> reporter: haley was caught out in the open. >> by the time i looked back my whole back windshield was already out. >> reporter: her only consolation is her children weren't in the way. >> god blessed me. they weren't with me. they would have been sitting in the back where all the glass is. >> that was kttv andrea lewis ya reporting. folks attending a minor league baseball game north of dallas last night ended up staring down a massive twister. the tornado missed ballpark but ended up destroying at least two homes. the game was postponed. in the upper midwest, a spring snowstorm hit the minneapolis area. by nightfall the snow was heavy. more snow is expected today. when all is said and done, up to 10 inches is possible. that would break a record for the largest spring snowstorm there in more than 30 years. we're learning more about the soldier who opened fire at ft. hood, texas. ivan lopez was married and had a 2-year-old daughter.

investigators believe his unstable mental health and a possible argument may have played a role in the attack. lopez saw a psychiatrist last month but showed no signs of violence. omar villafranca is at ft. hood. good morning, omar. >> reporter: three people are in the hospital. we're learning it might have been a simple disagreement that might have set ivan lopez off on a deadly rampage. he served as a truck driver but did not see any combat. when he returned home he sought treatment for anxiety and depression but officials say it may have been an argument that set him off. the commander here at ft. hood said there could have possibly been an altercation beforehand that set him off that made him

. he shot in two buildings and from a vehicle. >> he purchased a handgun off the base. somebody along the way must have gotten a hint. >> investigators are investigating lopez's family including his wife and going through computer files looking for clues about a possible motive. at least three peer were killed in the shooting wednesday including army sergeant tim owens from illinois. >> it's really hard to take. i'm stun, i really am, that this could happen. >> reporter: owens' mother said he tried to calm him down before he was shot down. there was no indication that lopez was targeting specific people. we also learned that ivan lopez purchased a .45 caliber gun at a gun store in killeen, which is just off post from ft. hood. he passed all his background check. from what we understand it is also the same gun store where army psychiatrist na dalt hasan

purchased the gun in 2009 to use here at ft. hood. grief counselors will be at ft. hood to help families as well as soldiers. well, the landscape of late night television is shifting once again. one of its giants is leaving the stage. here's jeff glor on the surprise announcement. >> by the way -- >> reporter: the announcement came during the taping of letterman's show in part he said after a conversation with his 10-year-old son. i said, harry, what if i retire? why would you retire? i said, well, then i would be able to spend more time with the family. and harry looked at me and said which part of the family? with that vote of confidence, earlier today, the man who owns this network, leslie moonves, he and i have had a relationship for years and years and years and iphoned him just before the program and i said, leslie, it's been great, you've been great, the network has been great, but

i'm retiring. >> reporter: letterman began his long career as a weather man in indianapolis before moving to los angeles in 1985. he became the late night with david letterman on nbc. in 1982 after nbc joined jay leno. david jumped to cbs bringing his hall mark top ten list with him. >> we don't have the timing down. probably in a year or so. sometime in the not too distant future. in 2015, for the love of god, paul and i will be wrapping things up and taking a hike. >> reporter: after nearly 6,000 shows on two different networks, when he steps away, david letterman will end the longest late night hosting run in television history. >> i just want to reiterate my thanks for the support from the network, all of the people who have worked here, all the people in the that it eric all the people on the staff, everybody at home, thank you very much. what this means now is that paul and i can be married. >> reporter: cbs has not indicated who letterman's replacement will be.

jeff glor, cbs news, new york. well, the president and ceo of cbs, leslie moonves issued a statement on letterman's decision. he said, quote, for 21 years david letterman has graced our network's air in late night with wit, gravitas, and brilliance, unique in the history of our medium. it's going to be tough to say good-bye. the search for flight 370 has a new deep sea focus this morning. the australian ship fitted with a u.s. navy black box locater is arriving in the area. it's on a path to converge with the british ship that has underwater search gear.

clearer skin is possible. a chicago man who jumped in front of a subway train to save someone says he had faith the conductor would see him. eddie leapt onto the tracks wednesday after a woman fell down. an onlooker recorded the scene as the train was bearing down on them. >> the young lady fell and as soon as she fell, we were trying to stop by jumping on top of the train, just to make sure he saw me because i had on an orange shirt. >> he was on his way to o'hare airport where he works for the tsa.

he says he's embarrassed by all the attention. on the "cbs moneywatch" now, the ceo of mozilla is out and renters face a markup. jill wagner's at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. the government releases its monthly jobs report today. it's expected the economy added 200,000 jobs last month. if so, that would be the biggest hiring game since november. on wall street, stocks finished lower for the first time in five days. the dow lost nearly half a point. the nasdaq lost 39 points. asian stocks slipped ahead of that u.s. jobs report. tokyo's nikkei lost a fraction. hong kong's hang seng fell a quarter percent. brendan eich, the co-founder of mozilla is leaving the company. eich had just been promoted to ceo but the move brought protests over his opposition to same-sex marriage. mozilla says eich is stepping down for the sake of the company.

the anadarko petroleum corporation reached a settlement with the federal government. it covers the cleanup of thousands of contamination sites around the country including radioactive waste piles in the navaho nation. it is the largest settlement ever for environmental contamination. and bad news if you rent your home. rents are projected to rise for a fifth straight year. demands for rental housing has grown since the economy has gotten stronger and supply hasn't kept pace. job growth has made it possible for more people to rent an apartment, but rising home prices prevent them from buying. nationwide rent rose 3.2% last year. anne-marie? >> all right. jill wagner at the new york stock exchange. thanks a lot, jill. straight ahead in sports the san antonio spurs put their 19-game winning streak on the line. and an unpleasant encounter between a major league baseball player and a fan. >> announcer: this portion of "cbs morning news" sponsored by

spurs and oklahoma city thunder appear to be on a collision course for the nba's western conference final. the spurs putting their 19-game winning streak on the line in okc last night and the thunder stars put an end to it. kevin durant scores 28 points and russell westbrook finishes with 27. oklahoma city sweeps the season series with san antonio with a 106-94 victory. and the final four teams remaining in the ncaa tournament are all in dallas ahead of this weekend's national semifinal games. one of those games is a rematch. back on december 2nd, connecticut beat florida, 65-64. that was the last time the top ranked gators lost a game. uconn coach kevin ollie says as far as he's concerned, that's ancient history. >> for us now it hasn't did anything, you know. you know, coming out with a victory, that's four months ago. they're a different team. we're a different team. they have some players that was hurt at the time.

at the south pole of the moon. researchers think it's as big as lake superior, and they say it's possible the ocean could harbor life. it was found using the nasa spacecraft cassini. for two decades a south carolina teacher has been inspiring students in the classroom. well, now she's setting an example for them outside of school. kristen hampton of our charlotte, north carolina, affiliate wbtv reports. >> reporter: sherry whitesides is a fourth grade teacher at cotton belt scool in new york. even though she might deserve it, her paychecks don't come with six figures so you can consider what happened on sunday on the side of the road a dream come true. >> i didn't know at the time it was money. i just saw something falling and so my son and i pulled over and we got out and when i looked down, i thought, wow. >> reporter: one after another they picked up 114 100 dollar bills, just over $11,000.

here's another look at this morning's top stories. investigators are focused on the mental health of gunman ivan lopez. they say his unstable condition may be the reason the army specialist went on a rampage. he killed three fellow soldiers and wounded 16 others before turning the gun on himself wednesday. and david letterman says he's stepping down from the late show next year. he made an announcement last night on television. he'll be seen as the longest late night television show in history. at the vatican it was a meeting of the world's most well known figures, queen elizabeth and the pope.
