this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, april 4th, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. another round of severe weather is rolling through the country's midsection this morning. damaging wind, thunderstorms, hail, as well as tornados are likely from southeast missouri to the ohio valley. up to 4 inches of rain is possible in some areas. early yesterday morning a tornado touched down in missouri just west of st. louis. at least 100 homes were damaged by winds of up to 110 miles an hour. there was heavy rain and flooding, but there was no reports of any injuries. in denton, texas, north of ft. worth, a storm produced a river of hail and water that flooded streets. the hail damaged car windows, but no injuries were reported. andrea lucia of our dallas station kttv has more from texas.

>> reporter: tornado sirens sounded and a funnel cloud formed on the horizon. >> i don't know what to do. i've never been in a storm like this. i'm not from here. >> reporter: people ran for cover, ducking inside this denton walmart. moments later the storm struck, littering the ground with hailstorms. >> it was a little terrifying. i'm not going to lie to anybody. >> reporter: he took shelter in an auto shop. >> the hail came in and it was circling in the building. i've never seen anything like it before. >> reporter: at the walmart, customers say they were ushered to the back of the store. >> the hail was this big around. >> reporter: the ice punched through skylights overhead. >> there was hail coming in through the top of the store. i mean it was falling everywhere. >> reporter: as the drivers moved east drivers pulled over and caught a menacing show. >> there looked to be a massive

cloud. it was getting bigger and bigger. >> did it catch you by surprise? >> yeah. >> reporter: haley was caught out in the open. >> by the time i looked back my whole back windshield was already out. >> reporter: her only consolation is her children weren't in the way. >> god blessed me. they weren't with me. they would have been sitting in the back where all the glass is. >> that was kttv andrea lewis ya reporting. folks attending a minor league baseball game north of dallas last night ended up staring down a massive twister. the tornado missed ballpark but ended up destroying at least two homes. the game was postponed. in the upper midwest, a spring snowstorm hit the minneapolis area. by nightfall the snow was heavy. more snow is expected today. when all is said and done, up to 10 inches is possible. that would break a record for the largest spring snowstorm there in more than 30 years. we're learning more about the soldier who opened fire at ft. hood, texas. ivan lopez was married and had a 2-year-old daughter.

investigators believe his unstable mental health and a possible argument may have played a role in the attack. lopez saw a psychiatrist last month but showed no signs of violence. omar villafranca is at ft. hood. good morning, omar. >> reporter: three people are in the hospital. we're learning it might have been a simple disagreement that might have set ivan lopez off on a deadly rampage. he served as a truck driver but did not see any combat. when he returned home he sought treatment for anxiety and depression but officials say it may have been an argument that set him off. the commander here at ft. hood said there could have possibly been an altercation beforehand that set him off that made him

. he shot in two buildings and from a vehicle. >> he purchased a handgun off the base. somebody along the way must have gotten a hint. >> investigators are investigating lopez's family including his wife and going through computer files looking for clues about a possible motive. at least three peer were killed in the shooting wednesday including army sergeant tim owens from illinois. >> it's really hard to take. i'm stun, i really am, that this could happen. >> reporter: owens' mother said he tried to calm him down before he was shot down. there was no indication that lopez was targeting specific people. we also learned that ivan lopez purchased a .45 caliber gun at a gun store in killeen, which is just off post from ft. hood. he passed all his background check. from what we understand it is also the same gun store where army psychiatrist na dalt hasan

purchased the gun in 2009 to use here at ft. hood. grief counselors will be at ft. hood to help families as well as soldiers. well, the landscape of late night television is shifting once again. one of its giants is leaving the stage. here's jeff glor on the surprise announcement. >> by the way -- >> reporter: the announcement came during the taping of letterman's show in part he said after a conversation with his 10-year-old son. i said, harry, what if i retire? why would you retire? i said, well, then i would be able to spend more time with the family. and harry looked at me and said which part of the family? with that vote of confidence, earlier today, the man who owns this network, leslie moonves, he and i have had a relationship for years and years and years and iphoned him just before the program and i said, leslie, it's been great, you've been great, the network has been great, but

here's another look at this morning's top stories. investigators are focused on the mental health of gunman ivan lopez. they say his unstable condition may be the reason the army specialist went on a rampage. he killed three fellow soldiers and wounded 16 others before turning the gun on himself wednesday. and david letterman says he's stepping down from the late show next year. he made an announcement last night on television. he'll be seen as the longest late night television show in history. at the vatican it was a meeting of the world's most well known figures, queen elizabeth and the pope.
