♪ down every road there's always one more city ♪ captioning funded by cbs captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, april 7th, 2014. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm marlie hall in for anne-marie green. first, fresh hope in the search for malaysia flight 370. an australian official said this morning sounds picked up in the southern indian ocean may be the first step in the search for a jet that's been missing for nearly a month. the search continues today in three separate areas hundreds of miles off australia's west coast. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> marlie, good morning. what's called the most promising lead in this month-long search, sounds picked up by u.s. high-tech listening equipment in

the south indian ocean that are consistent with those of a flight data recorder and a cockpit voice recorder. australian officials say u.s. navy equipment attached to an australian ship in the indian ocean has picked up two separate underwater signals consistent with black box pings. >> this would be consistent with transmissions from both the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder. >> reporter: australia's "ocean shield" carrying sophisticated listening technology listened to one transmission for about 2 1/2 hours and another on its return trip to the same area for about 13 minutes. >> probably in the search so far, it's probably the best information we've had. >> but officials say it could take days to determine if the signals are actually from flight 370. >> in very deep oceanic water, nothing happens fast. >> hundreds of miles away a british navy ship, request "hms

echo" searched where a cry sneeze crew heard signals friday and saturday. the new clues come amid analysis of the flight's path. officials say they determined that flight 370 flew around the indonesian airspace on its way to the ocean which may have been a deliberate effort to avoid radar detection. the leads say once the ping is found they send them in to try to find the wreckage. now some experts say the batteries on the two pingers could last longer than 30 days if they were at full strength, but, again, marlie, they're in a race against time, that these pingers may be dying out if they haven't already. >> susan mcginnis in washington. susan, thank you. hollywood is mourning a show business legend. actor mickey rooney is dead at age 93. he spent more than 80 years as a performer, was nominated for four oscars, and led a life off the screen that was at times

tumultuo tumultuous. bill whitaker reports. >> reporter: when it came down to it, mickey rooney knew how to fix anything. >> i giemg write a show for us. >> we could put on a show. >> reporter: rooney put on a show for nearly nine decades as an entertainer, sometimes as a ham, sometimes as a 5'3"-inch smart aleck. but there was no one bigger at the box office in the late 1930s. he was so popular that rooney himself declared that walt disney named a certain cartoon mouse after him. just as famous as his films were his marriages, eight of them, including sex siren ava gardner. >> i've been married so many times i'm the only guy you know who has a card made out to "to whom it may concern." >> reporter: mickey rooney was born as joe. talkies followed.

he had a 20-year run playing an all-american boy playing andy hardy. his all-american obsession was a all-american girl next door, judy garland. they went on to star in other musicals as well. call it chemistry, call it music magic. together they were unstoppable. ♪ we danced the whole night through good morning, good morning, good morning to you ♪ ♪ one, two, three, four one, two, three, four ♪ >> reporter: rooney did drama too. his first role was as a troubled youngster to priest spencer tracey in "boys town." he also played opposite elizabeth taylor in "national vette velvet" and with anthony quinn. and in "breakfast at tiffany's" he played a japanese man, politically incorrect by today's standard. he turned down the role of the politically incorrect archie bunk never the tv show "all in the family."

when others were ready to write him off, he teamed with dancer ann miller in "sugar baby." >> what are you doing? >> i'm supposed to look at the case. >> reporter: an old-fashioned burlesque review that ran for years on broadway and on tour. at the same time, he earned an emmy for his role as the mentally challenged man in the 1981 film "bill." younger audiences know him from "a night at the museum." >> he looks like a weirdee. >> there's no work to this. this is all fun. this is where i come alive. it's entirely fun, exhilarating. gives you energy and enthusiasm. >> reporter: but his life was a roller coaster. rooney owed millions to the irs, came back, battled the bottle, and found religion. in 2011 he went before a congressional committee investigating elder abuse and claimed he was being taken advantage of by his stepson. his stepson denied the accusation but rooney had star

power to his advantage and took the national stage one last time. >> you're the best. >> thank you. god bless you all, and god bless our country. >> reporter: from his childhood applause meant approval, and mickey rooney worked for it until the very end. >> dearly beloved, we are gathered together -- i should know this by heart. >> reporter: 5'3" inches of star power. bill whitaker, cbs news, hollywood. severe thunderstorms are threatening a large section of the southeast this morning. tornado watches and warnings are in effect across portions of louisiana, mississippi, and blaechl. severe thunderstorms are likely from the carolinas to florida. and rain will stretch from the mid-atlantic to the northeast this afternoon. starting today general motors is expected to begin making repairs on those faulty ignition switches at the center of a massive recall. the recall covers 2.6 million

cars. the repairs are expected to take months to complete. the defective switches could cut the power steering, air bags, and anti-lock brakes. 13 deaths are linked to the switches. >> this morning a u.s. navy ship is on its way to san diego with a sick baby girl on board. the navy plucked the 1-year-old and her family to safety when their sailboat was disabled nearly a thousand miles off mexico's west coast. today the baby girl is said to be improving. craig boswell has the story. >> reporter: 1-year-old lyra kaufman is getting medical treatment on board the "uss vandegrift" after becoming seriously ill while sailing around the world with her family. >> right now i can say she's stable. we've been quite pleased with her status. the family is exhausted as one can imagine, but they're out of any eminent danger or hafrm. >> reporter: eric and charlotte

kaufman were sailing with their darts when their youngest daughter developed a fever and a rash over most of her body. the situation turned into an emergency when their 36-foot sailboat lost steering and communication. the california international guard came to the rescue parachuting in four medics on thursday who treated young lyra on the disabled boat until the u.s. navy arrived sunday morning. >> it's a nearly successful mission. they're still under way. for us we need to get her to the highest medical care. >> reporter: the navy ship is expected to reach san diego on wednesday or thursday. craig boswell, cbs news. president obama and the first lady will attend wednesday's memorial service for the victims of last week's shooting rampage at ft. hood, texas. yesterday four candles were lit to remember the three people who were shot and killed and the gunman who took his own life.

balcony collapse, several people were injured, and this year we had this happen. >> police blame part of the trouble on outsiders. more than 150 were arrested. more than 40 others were injured. the murder trial of olympic athlete oscar pistorius resumed this morning in south africa. the double amputee who gamed world fame as a sprinter is expected to be called to the witness stand. pistorius is accused of killing his girlfriend. debora patta has a preview of what could be a dramatic turn in a trial being watched around the globe. >> reporter: pistorius has spent the last week of a court recess mentally preparing himself to take the stand. it's expected a pathologist will be the first witness for the defense followed by pistorius who faces several days of grueling cross-examination. he will square off against state prosecutor hairy harry knell who was nicknamed

the bulldog in south africa because of his relentless style of interrogation. prosecution sources say the gloves are off this week and there will be no special treatment for pistorius. possibly the greatest irony for a man who fought so hard to be regarded as equal. the south african defense attorney says he expects knell to be merciless. >> mel knows a conviction in this matter depends by and large on his ability to break down pistorius as a witness, to affect his credibility, and he will undoubtedly go for the jugular as far as that is concerned. >> reporter: not only will pistorius have to withstand knell's ruthless cross-examination this week, but he'll have to hold his emotions in check, a hard task given that he's broken down several times, sobbing and wrenching in the prosecutor's case. there are key questions he'll

have to answer in court. why didn't he know his she was not lying in the bed next to him before shooting. why didn't he shout out a warning before firing four shots through a locked bathroom door and who did the neighbors hear screaming in the early morning. pistorius's answers could determine whether or not the judge believes his version of the events. britain's prince william along with his white kate and son are in new zealand this morning. the royal couple arrived in wellington, the capital. well-wishers braved windy, rainy weather to greet them. it's the royal couple's first trip abroad with their infant son prince george. the royal family will also visit australia. still to come, a big apple beatdown. see what happens when the nypd takes on the new york city fire department in a hockey game played for charity. e played for charity.

aaron harrison. it's uconn versus kentucky. we'll see who comes out on top tonight. coverage of the men's basketball finaling starts tonight at 9:00 eastern right here on cbs. uconn could sweep the men's and women's tournament titles. the unbeaten huskies defeated stanford in the women's semifinals last night, but they will face their toughest task yet in the finals. uconn takes on the undefeated notre dame team that beat maryland in the finals. the women's finals are tomorrow night. finally in a matchup against new york's finest against new york's bravest neither side comes out looking good. a brawl erupts during a charity hockey game between new york city police officers and firefighters. the benches cleared during the second period, and it seems the only two players who didn't throw punches were the teams' goaltenders. when we return, it's time to kick up your cowboy boots.

this weekend's presidential election in afghanistan is being held for its high turnout. meanwhile a young afghan girl is returning home after receiving life-saving treatment here in the united states. as teri okita reports she's also got a new outlook on life. >> reporter: this 7-year-old came to the u.s., the result of violence in afghanistan, lugs an arm and eye to a grenade. >> when i first saw her, she was famished, almost lifeless. she wouldn't look at me in the eyes. she didn't smile. >> reporter: in three months doctors from shriners hospital have fit her with a prosthetic arm, pulled shrapnel from her wounds, and performed dental surgery. >> she wanted more than anything

in the world to look normal. >> what kind of difference do you see now? >> she's transformed into a completely different person. she smiles, she sings, she dances. >> reporter: and she has learned to paint along with reading and writing, all forbidden by the taliban, which now controls her family's individual. on tuesday she'll return to afghanistan and to an uncertain future. >> she's been exposed to american culture. could that ultimately put her in danger? >> you know, that's in the back of my mind every day. we know she's going into the middle of a war zone right now especially with the elections, the suicide bombers, and everything that's happened the past few days. >> reporter: but for now all the what-ifs are less important than what she has become. this summer she'll return for even more extensive surgery. >> the more she begins to look
