a pennsylvania high school is the scene of a terrifying attack but while more than 20 people were wounded by a knife-wielding student, some heroes jumped into action. i laid him down and said i need to get pressure on this wrist. >> i helown his wrists and arms and tried to keep the knife stationary. a young girl is kill and a dozen more hurt when a car smashes into a florida day care center. now the police are searching for the driver who triggered the crash. and the tradition continues. the tournament gets under way when the 78th edition of the masters tees off. this is the "cbs morning news" for thursday, april 10th, 2014.

captioning funded by cbs good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. police are trying to determine why a 16-year-old went on a stabbing spree at his high school in pennsylvania. the attack came as school started yesterday in murrysville about 30 miles east of pennsylvania. police say alex hribal used two large knives to slash and stab 21 classmates and a security guard. susan mcginnis has more from murrysville. susan, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. we are unfortunately all too familiar with mass shootings. what we really don't hear about are mass stabbings. that's exactly what happened here at franklin regional high school yesterday morning just as classes were set to begin when alex hribal pulled out two knives and starting slashing student after student. methodist church lit candles for victims of the latest incident

of the school violence. >> we carry the love for all the kids and their families and even the person who did this. >> reporter: alex hribal has been charged with multiple counts. police say the 16-year-old sophomore moved through the hallways of franklin regional seen yoor high school just before classes began yesterday. he allegedly used two knives with blades up to 10 inches long to slash and stab 21 students and a security guard. many here at franklin regional are being called heroes including an assistant principal and a student who helped tackle the suspect. mr. king immobilized him and i jumped on him as well. >> reporter: stacy evans tried to help a classmate from bleeding to death. >> i got a bunch of paper towels that a friend gave me and i kept pressure on it for about maybe 10 minutes. >> reporter: investigators are

analyzing hribal's computer for clues and are looking into reports of a threatened phone call between the suspect and another student before the rampage. all are expected to recover despite serious wounds, some describes as several inches deep. this rampage could have been far worse yesterday had it not been for very quick action by the staff, faculty, and students. >> all right. susan mcginnis in murrysville, pennsylvania. thank you so much, susan. police are looking now in florida for a driver of a deadly crash. one was killed when a car smashed into the kindercare learning center in orlando yesterday. at least 12 other children and at least one adult were injured when the car slammed through the wall of the building after it was hit from behind. some parents learned about the crash through media reports, and they were left worrying about their children sniet was -- it

was tough. there was a lot of not knowing and sadness, some of the kids not being able to communicate with the parents. i think it's tough all around. always tough when it's a child involved. >> police are looking for robert cortado, the man believed to be driving the suv that triggered the crash. records show he's been arrested eight times since 2000. and it's shaping up to be another grueling day of testimony for oscar pistorius. at his trial in south africa. the double amputee olympic athlete called blade runner is charged with killing his girlfriend reeva steenkamp in 2013. the prosecutor nicknamed bulldog started questioning him yesterday when he asked him to look at a photo of his girlfriend's shattered skull. >> take responsibility for what you've done. >> i'll take responsibility but i'm not look at a picture.

will happen. >> but an rov will not be sent down to the ocean bottom to retrieve the flight recorders until the search team has used those small unmanned submarines to map out their exact location, and that could still be weeks or months away or even longer. chip reid, cbs news, washington. president obama returned to ft. hood in texas for a memorial service for soldiers killed in a second mass shooting at that base. he also promised to do more for troops living with mental illness. anna werner has more on the somber remembrance. >> reporter: these are battlefield crosses, a front line tribute to soldiers lost in action. ft. hood commander lieutenant general mark millieualized his men. >> on april 2 nld he was tragically just months away from a well earned retirement. sergeant timothy owens, in 2005

he deployed for an entire year in support of operation iraqi freedom, and there he earned his combat action badge under fire and sergeant first class daniel ferguson, he was shot as he held a door closed to protect a room full of other soldiers. he put himself in the line of fire to save them. >> reporter: this was the second time president obama had to come to ft. hood after a mass shooting. the first was in 2009 following the attack that killed 13. >> like the 576 ft. hood soldiers who have given their lives in iraq and afghanistan, they were taken from us much too soon. like the 13 americans we lost five years ago. their passing shakes our soul. >> reporter: this tribute ended with the first sergeant calling the n of the dead soldiers. >> sergeant first class daniel

flipping over before colliding with the minivan in college station, texas, on tuesday. police say the truck ran a red light and then swerved to avoid traffic in the intersection. both drivers suffered minor injuries. the driver of the minivan installed the camera last year in case he was ever in a crash. and the family that was rescued in the pacific ocean after trying to sail around the world is back on land. a u.s. navy ship picked them up several hundred miles off mexico and brought them to california. their sailboat, the "rebel heart" was sunk by the navy. bigad shaban reports their rescue is creating controversy. >> reporter: the kaufman family walked off this u.s. navy war shap that came 1,000 miles off the mexican coast. the family was seen leaning the doctor's office where their sick 1-year-old daughter lyra was evaluated. >> we're on our way to a medical appointment. once we're done with those

things, we'll have more for you. >> reporter: eric kaufman, a coast guard licensed captain, put out a distress call thursday after lyra developed a massive rash and began vomiting. their sailboat seen here in family videos also started to take on water. the coast guard retreated into the ocean to retrieve the little girl. >> she was lethargic and out of it. she wasn't quite on death's door yet but in a couple of days she would have been. >> reporter: the navy dispatch add small boat to rescue the kaufmans. ian gable was behind it. >> what was their reaction when they saw you coming toward them? >> relief. relief. >> reporter: the family's rescue is causing a storm of controversy over risks the kaufmans took and the risk the coast guard took. the exact expense for this rescue is unknown, but taxpayers will be paying for it. while the kaufmans are being criticized on social media

for a hot sauce plant. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. wall street's stocks soared on news this the federal reserve will not be raising interest rates until sometime next year. the dow jones finished 181 points higher. the nasdaq was up 70 points. asia's markets were higher despite the imports were dropped. tokyo's nikkei was unchanged. hong kong's hang seng added 1.5%. president obama criticized the republicans for blocking a senate bill that would have required women to be paid the same as men for comparable work. the senate rejected the democratically sponsored bill on a 53-44 vote wednesday. republicans dismissed the measure as a political ploy by democrats to attract women voters in the november elections. bank of america will pay $772 million in fines and

refunds for overselling credit card extras. federal regulators said the bank misled customers about the cost and benefit of its credit card protection products. bank of america neither admitted nor denied the allegations. >> a new survey disputes the popular belief that filling out a federal tax return is hard to do. 58% of those surveyed in the "associated press" and gfk poll said completing a federal tax return is easy and just 7% said they were willing to pay more in federal taxes to make tax filing easier. and a popular spicy hot sauce is generating a lot of heat. last night the city of irwindale declared sriracha sauce plant a public nuisance. people who live near the plant complained that the smell of hot chile peppers being ground for the sauce made their eyes sting and gave them headaches and coughing fits. the city gave the company 90 days to correct the problem.

we celebrate the passage of the laws at this place because of president johnson's pivotal brilliant leadership and passing them. just as abraham lincoln city warded the 13th amendment through congress, johnson's leadership empowers the body of the presidency to redeem the powers of america. former president bill clinton paid tribute last night to president lyndon b. johnson. it was part of a three-day event. at the lbj library in austin, texas, to mark the 50th anniversary of the civil rights act. president obama speaks there

today. bill plante reports on how president johnson pushed through the landmark legislation. >> no memorial oration or eulogy could more eloquently honor president kennedy's memory. and the earliest possible passage of t pass rhts bill for which he fought so long. >> rep0 s or ther by battin the streets over racial equality, passing president kennedy's civil rights bill seemed out of the question for the new president. he brought up the civil rights bill and said pass this as a testament of john f. kennedy. >> one of the things about lbj, he was in the best sense of the world brilliantly opportunistic. >> reporter: joseph califano was part of johnson's domestic policy team. >> the assassination of kennedy, he used other things to get the civil rights act of 1964 passed.

>> reporter: getting civil rights bill through the congress controlled in part by southern segregationists took all of lyndon johnson's guile. here he is using his persuasive powers on congressman russell. >> i think may have been one of the moments when johnson in talking with russell who had been his mentor for years saying, dick, if you don't come with us on this, i'm going to have to run over you. >> i'm about to sign into law a civil rights act of 1964. >> reporter: and president johnson got what he wanted. >> america is different today because of the work of lyndon johnson. >> reporter: at the time congressman john lewis was a 24-year-old civil rights campaigner. >> the signs that we saw in 1963 and '64 that said white waiting, colored waiting, white men, colored men, white women, colored women, those signs are gone. our country is much better, and we are better people.
