stephen colbert to replace david letterman on the "late show." >> i tell you, i do not envy whoever they try to put in that chair. good morning, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with a fiery interstate crash with a bus full of students that left at least nine dead. it happened near orland near sacramento and san francisco. a truck crossed the median and slammed into a bus carrying high school students on a college visit. andrea has more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, that bus was filled with high school seniors. they were headed to a spring preview day in arkanscalifornia the crash happened.

signals from the black box recorders. they are optimistic the pings are from the missing plane. wendy jillette is here this morning. >> reporter: we have learned this morning that the latest signal is not related to the missing plane, but there's word from australia's prime minister that four other signals picked up are definitely believed to be connecting to the plane's black boxes. australia's prime minister offered assurances today that search teams may be close to finding the missing malaysia airlines jet. a u.s. navy black box detecter aboard the australian ship ocean shield picked up four signals in the southern indian ocean, consistent with those emitted by the plane's black boxes. >> we have very much narrowed down the search area and we are very confident that the signals that we are detecting are from the black box on mh-370. >> reporter: prime minister tony

abbott spoke to reporters in shanghai, china. he brought up the sobering reminder that time is running out. the batteries that emit the signals only last about 30 days and the plane disappeared more than a month ago. >> we are hoping to get as much information as we can before the signal finally expires. >> reporter: investigators announce that the first signal detected by an aircraft is not related to the missing flight. abbott stressed that even if teams are able to find the cockpit voice and data recorders, the recovery effort would be a lengthy process. the area where search teams are focusing is about 15,000 feet deep. and crews are hunting for signals today. they're canvassing a massive area about the size of los angeles. an immense job. >> wendy here in new york. thank you. well, president obama is expected to announce a top-level

resignation from his administration this morning. health and human services secretary kathleen sibelius is departing after the botched rollout of obamacare. she's stepping down after the white house celebrated the enrollment of 7 million americans in private exchanges. he's expected to nominate sylvia matthews burwell as her replacement. is man is in custody and facing charges. he slammed into a day care center killing a girl. we have more. >> reporter: people came to the day care center to leave stuffed animals for the children injured here. police say robert curchado was at the wheel of the suv that ran into the building. he has a long criminal record, including fleeing the scene of another crash in december. >> i have no idea how we are

going to wake in the morning and continue on with our lives. >> reporter: nicole is the mother of the girl who died. 4-year-oldly lilly was waiting for an afternoon snack when the car hit. >> i have no idea how someone loses a child and tries to have a life of normally. he did not just hurt my family, he destroyed my family. but all the children in that school whether injured or not, they watched other kids being run down and they're going to be scarred for life and he needs to answer for that. >> reporter: lilly's mother posted this video of her daughter online. >> she was 4 years old and she had a life ahead of her. and he took that away from her. and she deserves so much more. and she'll never have it. >> reporter: a charity website has been set up to help raise money for lilly's funeral.

the suspect has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident. the attorney for the 16-year-old accused in the pennsylvania knife attack wants a psychiatric evaluation of the teen. alex hribal is being held without bail accused of stabbing 21 students and a security guard. he was like a deer in headlights hours after the attack and the motive is a mystery. and overseas markets react to wall street's selloff and the recall of gm cars. we have more. >> reporter: here on wall street stocks were hammered by a huge tech selloff. the dow plunged 266 points, the third-biggest drop this year. and the nasdaq had the worst day since november, 2011, sliding nearly 111 points. asia markets tumbled too.

the nikkei fell 2%, and hong kong half a percent. and two are in trouble for the mishandling of the defect. in addition to the ignition switch, the recalled cars have another problem. drivers can remove the keys while the engine is still running. so dealers will place the ignition lock cylinders. walmart plans to make organic more affordable. the world's largest retailer will offer a new in house line of organic food that's 25% less ucks

will take over "late show" next year. ben tracy looks at the new generation of talk shows. >> you are doing such an incredible job. >> thank you, buddy. >> reporter: just last month, stephen colbert was complimenting jimmy fallon's "tonight show." now he's the competition. he will leave his cable show behind and take over david letterman's chair. one of the most coveted in late night. in a statement, colbert said simply being a guest on david letterman's show has been a highlight in my career. now if you'll excuse me, i have to go grind a gap in my front teeth. that's a reference to letterman's iconic grin. >> when you have that man of that stature, it's difficult. >> the ceo of cbs. why stephen colbert? >> every name in town came up, calls from managers, but the one

here's another look at this morning's top stories. a truck slams into a charter bus carrying high school students on a college visit in northern california. at least nine people were killed in the fiery collision. sfwlfrmgts and. and health and human services secretary kathleen sibelius is resigning. she was in charge of the rocky rollout of the obamacare website last fall. she steps down after five years on the job. suspects in a bizarre kidnapping case are due back in court in atlanta next week. they are accused of abducting a north carolina man in an act of revenge on behalf of a fellow gang member. bob orr has the details. >> reporter: it started saturday

morning when frank jansen answered a knock at his door. he was zapped with a taser and kidnapped and stuffed into a car and drove to atlanta where he was held captive by people with the violent blood street gang. on monday his wife began receiving threatening messages and a picture of his tied up in a chair. we will send him back in six boxes, one text read. and every chance we get, we will take someone in your family to italy and torture them and kill them. sources say the kidnappers were making demands on behalf of kelvin melton, a gang leader serving a life sentence in prison. he was prosecuted by the victim's daughter, an assistant district attorney. court records show the fbi traced the message to phones linked to his crew and to a cell phone melton was using inside the prison. at 8:00 p.m. friday night, a man
