usual place. >> how did he get in there? captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for wednesday, april 16th, to 14. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. a day of remembrance in boston on the one-year anniversary of the marathon bombing and a disturbing reminder of the deadly attack. police took man into custody who was behaving suspiciously. he was walking barefoot and draped in a black veil walking near the finish line and he had a pressure cooker with confetti in backpack. they detonated the backpack. last year's attack was carried out with explosives packed in

pressure cookers. >> our officers have been trained for looking for any kind of suspicious activity and when it is brought to their attention or if it is notice as in this case, they act upon it. >> they say the man is faced with charges of disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace. family friends and classmates in the boston neighborhood of dorchester held a vigil for martin richard. they pledged never to forget the 8-year-old and boston honored the three people who died near the finish line as well as the m.i.t. officer killed several confirmed dead.

about 100s we rescued. a u.s. navy ship is headed for the rescue. for a second day in a row technical difficulties forced them to cut short the trip. the bluefin-21 was on the floor. it was scanning the bed for any trace of the boeing 777. nothing was found on this trip or the first one. meanwhile the air and sea search for floating debris is expected to end soon. and delta air lines dealing with two onboard emergencies on tuesday. a delta jet was safely evacuated at atlanta's international airport after a report of smoke in the cabin and a separate

flight to atlanta landed in raleigh, north carolina, because of a mechanical problem of a landing gear door. all 149 passengers on board were safe and the jet was back in the air within an hour. the crisis in ukraine appears to be moving into a new phase. ukrainian government launched an offensive against the eastern part of the country. tara mergener is in washington with the latest. tara. >> good morning, anne-marie. a special anti-terrorist operation is under way this morning in east ukraine where troops are setting up positions to take on pro russian rebels. in turn the russian president has a warning. russian president vladimir putin told its counter part ukraine is on the verge of civil war. the comments came during a phone conversation on tuesday. on the same dame ukraine's acting launched a military operation targeting militants in the eastern part of the country.

they retook an airport in one of more than a dozen locations that rebels have seized in more than a week. >> and these provocations in eastern ukraine is creating a situation in which the government has to respond. the best way to de-escalate this situation is for the armed military to leave the buildings they seized. >> many say they organized it. >> they have ties to the government, ties to the events happening in ukraine that we are looking at and we're certainly prepared to sanction. if escalate continues -- >> in their phone conversation, the german chancellor and putin expressed hope that thursday's talks between the eu, u.s., russia, and ukraine will help restore peace. and the white house describes the ukrainian military operation as a measured response to a lawless insurgency. anne-marie. >> tara mergener in washington,

thank you, tara. a suspect is under arrest for the apparently unprovoked stabbing defendants of five people at a party in calgary, canada. police describe tuesday's attacks as the worst in the city. the victims' ages range from 22 to 57. attorney general eric holder is expected to attend a service for the three people shot dead at two jewish community sites. all of the victims were christian. on tuesday the white supremacist charged in the shooting made his first court appearance. dean reynolds reports. >> reporter: the disheveled suspect rose from the wheelchair and walked the last few feet to the court. he mumbled a few briefances to circuit court judge dan bokan. >> do you have an attorney or

are you quests a court-apainted attorney. >> reporter: it was a brief hearing but the defendant frazier glenn miller also known as cross is a long one. >> this morning we filed two charnls related to this case. one count of capital murder for the deaths of william corporan and reat underwood and one count of first degree premeditated murder in the death of teresa lamanno. >> william corporan and reat underwood were the first to die, lamanno, the third. they say these actions at two jewish community facilities were intentional and premeditated. if convicted he would either spend the rest of his life in prison or be executed. howe says he hasn't made a decision whether to seek life or death for what he called terrible crimes. federal charges have yet to be file but the u.s. attorney is

unseasonably cool temperatures. freeze and frost warnings are in effect this morning from eastern oklahoma to new york. the spring storm broke snow records in michigan. yesterday detroit received 3.1 inches of snow, breaking a record that's more than 130 years old. the city got more than 93.5 inches of snow this season. flint also broke a snow record, going back to 1974. the storm triggered flooding in vermont. rivers are near or above flood stage with water from heavy rains and melting snow and ice. flood warnings have been issued for most of the counties in the state. a number of state and local roads are already closed due to flooding. >> on the "cbs moneywatch" now, soda sales dip, and the smartphone kill switch gets the green light. jill wagner at the new york stod stock exchange with that and

more. good morn, jill zbhood morning, anne-marie. tokyo's nikkei gained 3%. hong kong's hang seng added a fraction. investors will be paying attention today to intel shares. after the closing bell, the company beat analysts' expectations despite lower earnings. the dow gained 89 points on tuesday. the nasdaq added 11. soda sales were flat for coca-cola in the first quarter. the world's biggest bev ralk maker reported that the soda sold globally fell for the first time in 15 years, but it was offset by strong sales of noncarbonated drinks including minute maid, power aid, and pa zani water. and kill switches will be coming to smartphones next year. they say the nation's biggest smartphone makers and carriers will install tools on device is. they will allow the phone to disable the device remotely if it gets stolen. smartphone providers agree to install the free tool on smartphones sold in the u.s. after july 2015.

in sports bad weather forcing four major league baseball games to be postponed. in cincinnati, the reds and the pirates playing the remainder of monday's rain delayed game. pittsburgh's russell martin breaks a 7-7 tie with an rbi single. the pirates win, 8-7. and the teams changed uniforms for the game scheduled for tuesday night. every player across baseball wearing the number 42 to mark the 67th anniversary of jackie robinson breaking the color barrier. the reds get some payback in the nightcap there. cincinnati pitcher mike leake helps himself out with a home run in the sixth inning and the reds win, 7-5. and the miami marlins' biggest name helped them out of a funk. giancarlo stanton crushes a 450-foot home run to center field. he finishes the game with five rbis, and the marlins beat the nationals, 11-2 to snap an

this morning after he somehow got inside an arcade machine at a lincoln, nebraska, bowling alley. customers spotted the boy playing with the stuffed animals inside the bear claw machine. his mother had reported him missing from their apartment nearby a short timer ler. >> they were wondering how did he get in there. that's pretty much what everyone was saying. the only thing i can think of is he crawled up where the prizes come out but it seems impossible. >> the vendor was called up and he was let out. i'm not sure if he got a prize, but i'm sure he got something from his mother when he got home. the museum now has the remains of a tyrannosaurus skeleton. as craig boswell reports, it is one of the most intact t-rexs ever discovered.

>> reporter: about 66 million years after roaming the earth, this tyrannosaurus rex is still getting around. he was shipped from montana where ranchers kathy and tom discovered it. >> we've got a big baby, and we think he's pretty or she's pretty. with don't even know if it's a he or she. >> reporter: they found it on federal land in 1988 and they jokingly recall having to keep the discovery under their hat . >> and tom said, i think i'm going to need a bigger hat. >> reporter: it's going become a part of the smithsonian. >> this is a big deal. the smithsonian institution has not had a t-rex and now it's got a t-rex. >> reporter: a museum hall will be gutted to make room. for now visitors can watch scientists scan the bones as part of the research of the prehistoric predator. >> little kids are like, oh, there are monsters under my bed. but if you really think about it, there really were monsters a long, long time ago like this

a year after the boston marathon bombing, a photographer from "the boston globe"s a year after the boston marathon bombing, a photographer from "the boston globe" is sharing his recollections of that day. as elaine quijano reports, he stayed in contact with some of the victims of the attack. >> reporter: the day the bombs went off at the boston marathon, veteran boston globe photographer john tlumacki took more than 200 photos. >> i have trouble going back to the finish line of the marathon because i can visualize where everybody was when i photographed them. >> reporter: he was especially haunted by the images he took of 17-year-old sidney corcoran and her 48 mother celeste.

shrapnel shattered sidney's arteries. >> by photographing them, i felt like i took advantage of them even though i was doing my job, that i was guilty of maybe depriving them of their dignity. >> reporter: tlumacki felt compelled to meet them. two weeks later when he finally did, he apologized. >> i didn't want to have that image in my head of them lying on the ground. i needed a new picture of them, and i asked them if i could take a picture of them, and they just kind of looked at each other and smiled. >> they grew closer as he documented their recovery. >> what are some of the moments that stood out to you? >> one of first times celeste stood up without holding onto anything. that was day one of celeste being energized, being courageous, being boston strong.

>> he witnessed the milestone the day sidney left the hospital. >> to just be in my brother's car and to be out of the hospital and know i was going home and i was just so ecstatic like i through my arms up like, all right, take me home. >> five days later celeste came home. >> they wheeled me in and i threw my arms up in the air like she did and said, yes, i'm home. >> reporter: another favorite was the night of sidney's senior prom. >> there were times we didn't think we'd ever be that happy again or even just be here physically. to be able to look back and see that, there's a certain triumph in it because you feel like you've overcome this greatest obstac obstacle. >> do you feel absolved of your guilt now? >> i do. celeste said, john, i don't want you to ever, ever, feel that guilt again. people would have never realized tl horror we went through, what terrorism does, and you captured that for the world to see.
